[Q] MKV Container support - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Can some one give their phone a run through with some MKVs downloaded. I want to see if there is native support for the MKV Container with some common codec for internet downloaded files (Particulary interested in anime's)

.mkv isn't a codec, it's a container.

Im pretty sure it wouldnt come with native mkv support. I dont know off hand any handsets that do. I cant find out until I get my handset hopefully tomorrow but if it doesnt then its easy enough to get round it.

Yeah I was lazy edited

You can get MKV compatible players from the market anyway so it's not really an issue.

Those phones support playback of some .mkv files because the respective manufacturers have included support via their modifications to Android. The Galaxy Nexus is a stock Android device, and as such, will likely only have limited support for video and music files. If anyone wants additional functionality that stock Android doesn't offer, that is what apps on the market / ROMs are for

Just posted that on another board:
mkv container: yes, as long as you use the google acquired vp8 codec. So thats most likely a "no" for downloaded mkvs since most of them will be h.264.

so a simple remux to ts (a few seconds to do) would be OK but most would need audio transcoding too (creating sync issues)
can anyone recommend a decent, unrestricted, free video player for mkv with h.264 and will do aac, mp3 and ac3 audio?

Strange that they would limit container support based on the contents of the container. Makes no sense to me. We'll have to see I guess.

I know on my incredible (old I know) it cant do anything over 720p in software decode mode and that is pushing it.
I dont know if the dual cores can do better. It would be good to know that its no longer an issue.

Well at least it has more support than the iDevices

The IVA 3 multimedia accelerator integrated into the OMAP 4460 is capable of decoding 1080p30 video, providing an application is available to take advantage of this you should be able to play most HD content.

Coreplayer 1.1 works fine!

Hi, just installed the new Coreplayer 1.1 on the new Sleuth ROM.
I did no adjustments in settings whatsoever (default ATImageON).
Played an avi video in portrait and landscape, skipped back and forward.
Works perfect!
Concur. Coreplayer 1.1 is a HUGE improvement. Finally worth the $20 I paid for it back in Oct. AVRCP works now as well. ImageON acceleration is just short of phenomenal. I worked with the Core folks a bit and told them about the hardware table file. Quite frankly, I argued against them modding it b/c that would put them into device specific mode. They found a way to do it, however and I'm glad they did!
edit: I'll look at their modified table when I get a chance and mod my patch accordingly if its different.
You're right, IT WORKS!!!! Finally!!!

As it now works with acceleration there is a huge speed improvement!
Does it play *.flv files?

Is there a trial version of Coreplayer? Not TCPMP, an actual trial version of the actual Coreplayer. I've tried TCPMP and it didn't work with the buttons on the Moto HT820 so I'm wondering if that is fixed in Coreplayer.
coreplayer 1.1 supports the wmp plugin approach for avrcp support so your ht820 should work with it.
I've been using TCPMP and it seems to work fine as well.
My biggest gripe with the Coreplayer was that it refuses to stream music over my wifi network at home.

So Coreplayer is an exact copy of TCPMP. The only difference is a skinned interface. I paid 20$ for NOTHING.
Actually, the ATI ImageON is finally supported and AVRCP now works. Neither of these features were in TCPMP. Also, the CoreTech media library is lightyears ahead of TCPMP's rudimentary playlists...
Does core player with the OEM rom on a 8525 work when paused with no modifications? Or does it only work with the modified rom with drivers?

belina what the hell do you expect?? When you go into a developers forum and start bad mouthing the software......you will notice that WM6 uses WMV9 which is a different codec alltogether....wmvs from an earlier codec work fine as i am testing right now....as for MJPEG this may be an issue but not one that hasnt been commented on in many forums.
I suggest you read up before you begin spitting your dummy out about a piece of 'in development' software!!!!

This is a bug. It appears that you can stream directly if you know the location but if you use internet explorer and launch Coreplayer through a file association then it will simply play the last selection you had going. There's a thread on this over at corecodec.com. Hopefully, they'll have a fix for this one soon...
I also had problems with WM9 so I did a bit of investigation work.
Core player has been advertised to run WMV9, see for yourself here.
You can see corecodecs official suppliers page, which has now been back edited to remove all mention of wmv9.. also all posts, friendly ones too have been deleted by the forum admin regarding anything that is not pat on the back for the team, including how to enable wmv9 etc..
So I spoke to betaboy (one of the dev's) and his collegues.. they confirmed NO wmv9 support.. NO WMV support. NO plugins. When I showed them it was advertised to include this wmv9 codec, they explained it was because it maybe can in the future just not now.
Well, so setting aside the dubios business model. I searched xda devs and found a post relating to wmv9.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298126&highlight=wmv9+video
Some people are having issues getting WMV9 in TCPMP working with WM6, particularly those of us who are trying to use TCPMP with Orb and are getting a nasty WMV9/WMA9 not supported error. This is because WM6 includes newer versions of the WMV and WMA codecs, which are named differently than WM5's codecs. Orb does work with WMP Mobile 10 and Conduits Pocket Player, but the video is incredibly jerky for some reason
Click to collapse
So I tried this method and yes it's a dirty fix.. video is jerky. allthough slightly less jerky than playing wmv9's in the microsoft mediaplayer.
I then pursued the matter further and some kind people from xda devs had this solution, by copying these files into your tcpmp/coreplayer folder.
http://rapidshare.com/files/39953628/wmvplugins.zip.html
Performance is better, however videos are still pretty much unwatchable at 300kbps video due to massive frame rate drops etc..
I am wondering why wmv9 is cuasing us such a problem.. I have found it to be the most common wmv format used. I wonder if anyone knows if the decoder from wm6 is buggy or can be extracted/modified/renamed in some way to enable us better performance. Or if newer Rom releases have a newer updated versions included? I see wmv9decoder.dll in the windows folder but cannot copy it or anything.. maybe this isnt the file we need to look at, but it maybe..
To conclude the Core team have produced a great peice of software, there bussiness practices are pretty dodgey. There is no need for it, as they have a good product..
Thank you Ribdool
for your investigations on this issue - this is what I call good work.
I orderd it online and read their announcements carefully before and than
had the same problem and felt pretty tricked as the player did not support WMV.
Hopefully they find a solution soon.

[Q] h264/mkv limitations?

Hi guys,
I'm suffering trying to get some videos to play on my epic. They are MKV: h264 (848x480) and ogg. At first I thought the phone saying it wouldn't support the video was the audio codec, which I tried remuxed as mp3 and wav, neither helped. At this point I am wondering it the h264 resolution isn't supported?
However, another weird issue is my epic also won't play some videos I already reformatted for my ipad. These are MP4: h264 768x576 and AAC. I can't imagine the epic being more limited than the crippled ipad...
Am I missing something here? Everywhere I look, all of these formats are supposed to be supported (well, maybe not ogg). Also, every once in awhile one of these combinations will play, but with missing audio, no subs, can't seek, freezing video, etc. Always some error, and usually just outright says the system doesn't support the format.
Thanks for the help guys, this is stressing me out lol, so sick of trying conversions.
What software are you using? Handbrake with Normal profile works just fine on the Epic (but High Profile does not work).
Last time I tried to find a decent video transcoder for Windows it was a nightmare, maybe this will help you (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_video_conversion_software).
If that doesn't workout you could try this: Find a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu, burn it to cd, when its loaded click "Try Ubuntu", and once connected to the internet press Alt+F2 and copy in "(sudo apt-get install arista); arista-gtk". I tried another program called Transmaggedon, but although it gave more control over transcoding, it didn't appear to work.
Ya handbreak did work. Unfortunately I still have to demux both the original and post-hb file to transfer the subs over as handbreak isn't doing it.
Thx for the help. I would still like to know the resolution limitation tho so if anyone knows...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So I have been fooling around with it some more and found that when I recode using handbreak I don't need to change the vid resolution, just have to force it to 24fps and everything, vid/audio/subs, sync fine (source is 30fps).
I don't think the epic supports ogg/vorbis audio, which explains why the source material didn't work, but then after remuxing with compatible audio why wouldn't it work? All I can think of is handbreak is compressing the bitrate even though I'm not changing any settings there...
I'll update with any new findings.
I took another look around and it looks like SUPER would work quite well. It can use FFmpeg which has support for pretty much every known format and gives you a lot of control over the output. I really didn't expect to find anything this good on Windows, but FFmpeg was originally used under GNU/Linux, so it isn't as surprising.

Strange, I run mkv with no problem at all. I use Double Twist as my player. Not sure whether this has built in codecs for mkv. I never checked because I can play everything on my phone. Except damn Netflix of course.
Thx for the recommendation chinoto.
The mkv capablity should be built into the phone independent of the software playing it (at least that's my understanding). All of my reencoded mkv's are working fine which I'm attrbuting to the lower bit rate.
The original bitrate was 1,534Kbps (video), handbreak compresses it to 681Kbps at the same resolution (24fps from 30fps original for sync though).
What's the highest bitrate you guys have had work correctly (no syncing issues even after seeking)?

Would be nice if the phone supported more than one display via special MHL cable, 2-4 displays, like desktop cards. Games would have to be updated to support that as well... play movie on one display for someone to watch it while you use the phone to do some work (for example PC remote desktop on another display) or play at the same time.

Xperia ion H.264 support

So I have been considering the Ion as an upgrade from my ATRIX 4g but I have one criteria than the next phone I get cannot fail, or else there is no point in upgrading my phone because overall, I am happy with my current phone. I was wondering if the ion has the ability to natively decode hi-profile H.264 encoded video in an .mkv file. I have literally thousands of files on my PC and I don't want to re-encode them, especially because most of them have subtitles and that makes them extra hard to re-encode.
So if someone could find and test out some h.264 hi-profile encoded mkv video in 720p or 1080p, and report back the results of how it played, I would be super grateful! (Just FYI most .mkv files are h264 and most videos encoded in h.264 are encoded in hi-profile, so the files aren't that rare in case it seemed daunting to find a file like that) Thanks so much!

Google it.. with the help of tubemate you can download videos from youtube.
Boomed From My Boombastic !!HTC ONE!!
Tubemate is better at playing videos than Youtube and the only reason I don't use it is because of the gross UI. I support this

There is no download YET. There will be probably SOON, if creator of tubemates will give me an answer. (I've already sent him messages on facebook, mail, google+ but no answer yet)
Wasnt aware the Api was sorted now. There wer major issues recently, Youtube not giving all access and all that.
Good to see it up and running again. :good:
Looks good. Will give it a try when you get the green light for a release.
Broken images unfortunately :/
But I'm sure it's good. Almost anything is better imo
I'll keep an eye on this thread

yeah I'm curious about this too
From what I understood: he refers to the user interface of the app which is NOT optimizied for 1080p screes
Have you guys looked into this modified version of YouTube that also allows you to download videos in all qualities?

I own an unlocked HTC One like I assume the author does too. I think that the problem he is trying to solve is, that Tubemate doesn't support 1080p playing/streaming on the HTC One. Downloading works, even though Tubemate has to convert the Video after it is downloaded, for some reason, and it only works with the Armv7 Codec and you have to tick a box in the settings to enable HD download. For this tubemate then uses the free app "Mp3 Video downloader", which is clearly also used to now actually convert Videos into MP3 instead of just renaming the download MP4 video file into a Mp3 file, like it was done in previous versions. This is not a problem of the player used (android player or tubemate player) but more a problem of the app itself not recognizing that the HTC One has a 1080p display. See, if you select "1080x1820 high end devices only" it gives the message "Not Supported". This makes sense, since on this page: http://slideme.org/application/tubemate-2 there is a list of resolutions available and there it says
"
[Available resolutions]
1920x1080(Full-HD): GalaxyTab, Galaxy S2, PC
1280x720(HD): high-end devices
"
So clearly the tubemate developers enabled 1080p playback on Galaxy Tab and the Galaxy S2, but not for the HTC One. Weirdly on my previous phone, a HTC One S, I could always select 1080p playing and it would always work, even though the HTC One S has only a 720p display, so that's kinda strange..
Also, I don't really think that a redesign is necessary, i am kinda happy with the current design.
Also, the app the guy right before me linked also only supports 1080p download but not playing so it offers the same as Tubemate.
And there is also another Youtbe HD playback app but that doesn't get updated anymore, so It actually works with an old and less functional version of the android YouTube player than the current one link is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715.
I am really interested in this idea of adding this feature, and possibly add even more devices with 1080p screens, since there are way more auch devices available and I am assuming most of them can't play 1080p videos, since the native YouTube player (at least in my HTC One) only supports resolutions up to 720p and I would really like the developers of Tubemate to find this and work on this issue.
Btw, I don't know if it matters but my devices (HTC One and HTC One S) were both rooted and on the newest available stock Rom which is on my HTC One S currently android 4.3.
