[REVIEW] Howord Forums - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Howard Forums review

God I haven't been there in years! Great Review btw.
Super Glad the screen displays normal whites compared to the junk Samsung has been putting out lately. Just look at the difference between the SGSII and the Galaxy Nexus. I couldn't deal with that nasty hue all day every day. This is what turned me off from the Nexus S.

"The only USB modes in ICS are MTP and PTP modes. There is no mass storage mode. MTP lets you both read and copy files. MTP’s advantage over mass storage mode is that a) you no longer have to pull the notification area down and select mass storage mode and b) you can still view the contents of the card on the device while it is still connected to your computer. The disadvantage is that mass storage allows you to copy and read multiple files simultaneously."
mmm... :/

Screen close-up definitely shows it's sharper than GS2 and no sign of pixels.
So much for the "oh it's pentile" argument.

Agreed. I was expecting it to not be noticable but nice to have proof to back that up now.
I still find it kind of funny that many reviewers have no idea about some major Android features. In this case it was when he mentioned in the video about there not being any Facebook or Twitter options available in the Accounts settings. Have people really no idea that it's something developers of the apps add via an API? The fact that neither the Twitter or the Facebook app was included should've been a good enough clue. Well, nobody is perfect.

That, or "What’s different now is that you can also add folders. I guess it’s only fair: Apple stole the Android notification area so Google stole the folders."
Android has had folders for ages now... they just revamped how you create them. Yes it's like iOS now, but that's good. Easier is better.

did he say 8MP camera?

yes he did. seems like this review isn't really a good review...

Pictures speak louder then words. Most important thing I got from the review is the +1 on the screen and -1 on the lack of Facebook integration... which sucks. I like being able to snap a shot and post it to facebook. Sure Google+ kinda competes with Facebook but just make Google+ a default, not remove Facebook completely.
I guess this also removes Facebook contacts from the phone (which I think they did that on previous builds). I figured it would only be a matter of time. Even more reason for CM9.

Surely this will come simply by installing the facebook app?

Anyone else notice he said the battery life sucked?

i also noticed he kinda didn't know what he was talking about

Hah, well that's what you get for a review from a group that isn't hardcore Android focused.
I think maybe the only important takeaway that I got from that review was the close-up screen comparison with the Galaxy S2. Rather allays my concerns over Pentile-Gate 2011.
Oh, and also confirmation of pentaband support for both AWS and standard frequencies.

He also said he had the Phone just for a few hours and the Battery usage showed 63% Display usage. Guess this is just the "it's new" effect where people play around with it for hours - then every phones battery will go down pretty quick. Some other Review reported a good battery life and the processor in the Galaxy Nexus usually known for a good power management.

Yup it's added by the app through an api(both the account in settings and the option to share), indeed this guy isn't too educated on this specific part of android But a good review in my opinion.

or since the guy doesn't seem to have a clue, it could very well be down to him not charging the phone fully, and just whacking in the battery and turning it on as soon as he opened the box.

That's what I'm pretty sure he did. Especially looking at the battery usage graph, which I attached here.
If you start at ~70%, probably not gonna get stellar life.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Review & SGS 2 Comparison

Hey guys, so I did a review for the Galaxy Nexus, you can find it here, and a small comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S2, you can watch the video here.
You can ask me questions and I'll try and reply as well as I can.
Also, check another review made by a colleague of mine, see his thread here.
Cheers,
Alex.
How did u get one already lol

Hmmm. Decent review. But I'm still waiting for a review for the final software and hardware. And you missed on a lot of things too.
Could you possibly make a short video demonstrating the notification light of the Nexus? Here are some things that you could include in it:
-Breathing rate
-Colours available
-Colours used for different applications (mail, messaging etc)
-Whether the notification light resumes after waking the phone up and not looking at the new notification?
Thanks.
tks for your review
is it the 2nd mic for noise cancelling in the top of the back?
How strong is Wifi signal compared to SGS2?

BIG QUESTION! Please answer this ...
Also which screen is better? does the plus make a difference?
Very nice review. Thanks for posting.
You said you were disappointed by the battery life, but earlier in the review you said it could last a day with intense use. Sounds pretty average to above average to me for todays android phone. What specifically disappointed you?

Colors available - so far I've noticed only white (for standard notifications - missed call, new message, new e-mail) and green (for certain apps - for instance, a new message on Facebook messenger will make it flash green) being used.
If you wake the phone up and then lock it again, no, the light won't flash anymore.
@peacekeeper05 - Thanks for the appreciation! If you have any suggestions, feel free to share It's my first review, so I'm kinda... experimenting. Suggesting new things that I might use in the next reviews will only help me
@veper & jameslfc - I'll get back to you on this tomorrow, I don't have my SGS 2 with me today, so I can't compare. Will try this tomorrow.
@rlsroufe - yes, the battery will stay up to one day of using . Given the fact that the display is bigger then the one on the S2, but the battery is also a bit bigger, I thought it will even and it will last at least the same as the S2... but the ICS drains it pretty fast. Hope that will be solved with an official update or with some custom kernels.
@royalsuen - I noticed that small "hole" at the top of the cover, but I'm not entirely sure what it is.
@jameslfc - check my colleague's review, he did a pretty good comparison for the displays. From my point of view, this one is better, even though it's not plus.
Could you please do comparison shots with the cameras? Same scene, same lighting, without playing around with the settings. I want to know which one does better out of the pocket. Plus, could you do the same with HD video capturing?
@qwer Yup, I'll do that tomorrow as well, hope I won't forget the S2 this time

Thanks mate, really appreciate this thread
Can't decide whether to upgrade :/ what is the maximum you would pay to "upgrade" from the sgs2 to the galaxy nexus, £50? £100?
I am asking this because I could sell my S2 and buy a nexus simfree
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Also would you mind photographing the contents of the nexus box, I see you mentioned the headphones but haven't shown them so this would be interesting
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yup, that's pretty much what I'd pay. Wouldn't pay a huge amount of money, because the differences aren't worth that much... however, you could consider that the Nexus will bring a new display standard, resolution speaking, so... might not be bad to have that. And the fact that it's the first with ICS means that it'll be the first to receive any updates.
Regarding the box contents, sorry, can't help you there. I got mine in a nice, white box, not the retail package, along with a microusb cable, the socket adapter and the headphones. The headphones seem just like the ones on the S2, but I didn't try them, to be honest.
Would you like to sell it?

Massive drawbacks with this phone

Ghost volume button issue on most devices
No micro sd card support
Confusing user interface
No Facebook contacts sync
No native social network widget
Can't add more home screens
Fuzzy speaker
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off
No digital clock only analog widget
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera
NO SWYPE
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE,
Then don't buy it. Or if you have it, return it. Or ship it to me, I'll take it.

There's nothing wrong with expecting things to work. The problem is that most of the things you are expecting are things that you should have known about or things that never existed or were expected to be implemented.
Seems like OP is one of those average Android users who have not seen what stock Android is.
That's the problem with Manufacturer skins and casual users, take away Touch Wiz or HTC Sense and they're confused as hell.

You sound like a facebook addicted teenager. You realized that you bought a device that will set the standard for FUTURE software development right? If you want to be at the forefront of android OS, you have to let app developers to catch up. What, do you think facebook knows what will happen with ICS? If you can't live without those apps, go back to a gingerbread device, there are many choices!
I find it funny that you listed low quadrant score as an issue. You should really research about a phone before you buy it, this will inform you about the hardware limitations such as no sd card support or 5 mp camera before you take the plunge of purchasing the device.

No micro sd card support - this will always be an issue. The first 2 didn't have it, why would you think the 3rd one will. Galaxy Nexus has always been a developer phone so its treated differently.
Confusing user interface - From what everyone is saying, they are loving the new interface. It's refreshing and when you get used to it, its hard for people to go back
No Facebook contacts sync
Nexus S 4G had this issue. This isn't a issue with facebook not following a certain protocol that Google requested. and they took it off the Nexus phones. Or they just don't like them because they have their version of a social network
No native social network widget
They do its called google plus. Everything isn't native but 3rd party sources
Can't add more home screens
As much as I have to kinda agree with you in this because its nice to have 7 or more screens, its a dev phone so you knew this was happening long before ICS was announced
Fuzzy speaker
that sucks, but from reviewers they say its quieter but clear
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off
No digital clock only analog widget
Just get another widget that looks better anyways. They never truly had a digital clock worth adding on your home page anyways.
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
There have been cases that proven that the GN has scored better on web tests and other tests. Quadrant can be faulty. You are using a gingerbread program on a completely different OS. A bigger jump than eclair to gingerbread. I would compare the Razr scores as the initial breakdown (OMAP4430 vs OMAP4460 in the GN) and use that as your base comparing since Razr runs on Gingerbread
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera Megapixels shouldn't matter. and Someone has done a camera comparison. The GN is not far off and infact has better low light capabilities than the S2. Once again this is a the same story over again, you knew this going from Nexus S that the camera won't be the best class, the same holds true here.
NO SWYPE - Swype will eventually be available through apk once it is compatible. Google isn't going to put swype on their phones. It's a 3rd party software and its up to other manufacturers to decide if they want it on their android device
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE, I feel ya about the volume bug. But thats what it is a bug. This is common for alot of new products, just like never buying the first year of a new model car. But alot of reviewers from publication have not seen this volume bug so it could be something else entirely and should be fixed soon.

I put my thoughts above.
The volume bug is the only one that is severe. I don't mean to be rude, but the rest is just plain ... ignorant.
Quadrant is an accurate benchmark? It is appalling unreliable.
Megapixels is a measure of camera quality?
I'd return in your position.

I guess an iPhone user making the switch would also complain about losing "apple services".
But here's a thing - if you're going with a new phone, why not try new services? Let's face it, Androids have been horribly #smokedbywindowsphone in the real-world tests of simple things like finding a restaurant, posting to twitter and facebook, uploading a pic to facebook...the tight integration of the people hub and the extended features of Bing (visual/music/local scout) might just be better
Tell us what services you are using, and we'll point you in the right direction for the WP alternative.
For starters, instead of Pandora, try TuneIn Radio.
can u post some pics taken with the camera?? that would be pretty awesome of you...
as far as google services, try out some new stuff...windows market is growing every day. I think I would be a little lost too, although I do love the interface of wp7
Yes, please post camera samples, i'm specifically interested in indoors pictures, low light without flash too. Please..
I also have the Lumia 900. After being excited about this phones camera...i can tell you that I am severely disappointed. I've been using the Samsung Note and the pictures aren't even close. Almost seems like there is a camera problem that needs to be fixed.
Very grainy and out of focus. Poor colors and detail...and shots im low light are terrible. Worst phone camera I have used in a long time. I tried to attach an image but I can't on Windows phone 7. I'll put on on later.
That being said...the front camera is the best I've used by far.

They do look rather good. That low light pic with phone is very sharp and almost no noise. Still, it's only macro. Also, for some reason there is no exif data, did he process them?
The camera leaves a lot to be desired...but the phone in general performs well. I have a love hate relationship with windows phone...but if it's your thing you just can't beat the build quality of this device. It looks and feels expensive. Call quality is great and the speakers sound excellent too.

I like WPFandora
So far, I'm very disappointed in the Lumia 900, and WP7 as a whole.
Mango is definitely an improvement over 7.0, but it still doesn't hold a candle to Android for customization and development. I would take it over iPhone, just because it does offer quite a few improvements in user interface, and useability, IMHO.
I am going to continue working to learn the WP7, and figure out what benefits it actually has over Android.
Also, don't believe the hyp on the Smoked by Windows Phone. It's all a matter of how you have the phone set up. If you have the particular app on your Homescreen, then yes, it's faster than an Android that doesn't have it. However, as has already been proven in the incident in Santa Clara, CA. If you have your Android setup with Homescreen Widgets to do these tasks, then it can be just as fast, if not faster, than WP7. So, basically, the whole Smoked by Windows Phone, is nothing but a gimmick, that is set up to "game" the competition. The true test, would be a comparison of doing things with the phones straight out of the box, rather than having them already preset, and pretending like you can't do that with an Android.

You need to go away and research both WP and the Smoked campaign. If you really want the challenge out of the box, Android is gonna get SMOKED.
You draw attention to one of the challenges, in which both parties had made mods to the homescreen.
But lets take an Android and WP, straight out of the box and ask them to post to Facebook and Twitter simultaneously...I promise you, WP is gonna smoke the Android phone because that functionality is part of the core OS on a WP.
Or howabout, straight out of the box, we post a photo to facebook? AH yes, Android is going to get smoked there too, because that too is part of the core functionality. You see, with WP, there is no need to even download a facebook or twitter app to achieve either of these tasks. You'd still be searching Google Play for the app when the WP phone has already finished.
Same with the Bing search...there are no widgets or apps involved...you can just do it, straight out of the box.
Makes me wish that MS didn't use the Weather Live Tiles (although Live Tiles are native, not a downloaded widget).
But the guy still had to disable his lock screen (not exactly "out of the box" eh?) to win the competition

I thought that was a mistake by the salesperson. The weather task is good when competing with the iphone, which still has a static icon. I remember when I switched from an iphone to android it was one of the major differences.
posting a status to twitter is the same. posting a picture to facebook gives windows phone a big advantage on ios/android.
you can't compare out of the box performance on these tasks, my phone will only be in that state for a short time, if I do something all the time, I will optimize my phone for that.
So yes, windows phone makes some of the tasks in that challenge a lot easier but that's not what I show people who want to see my windows phone.
I usually show them the people hub and group tiles and how I can see all the facebook and twitter updates right there without opening different apps.
It seems that many people wanted to lose so they can get a new windows phone, and combined with this incident, it led to MS scrapping the in store challenges in favor of a recycle offer for old phones
btw, Android's widgets are very similar to the live tiles, but my Android's battery would die if I had too many 'live' widgets (that get data from the network) and the phone would slow down after a few hours. I had to reboot the phone almost every day. My Lumia 800 rarely gets restarted

one plus removing colour filter with update

XDA and other reporting one plus will disable the colour filter mode via a update .
I did this video over a week ago before it was widely reported ,since then just about every tech site picked up on this feature with lots of videos showing it .
XDA saying the will have to disable one of the cameras to remove it fully .
If this is correct then surely we have been sold a phone under false pretences
https://www.xda-developers.com/onep...gh-camera-temporarily-disabled-future-update/
"We do appreciate the company addressing these concerns. But, in the same conversation, this also entirely disables the functionality of the color filter camera, which is a hardware component that users are paying for, downgrading the OnePlus 8 Pro from a “quad-camera phone” to a “triple-camera phone” while still burdening it with dead weight in terms of component and cost. OnePlus should have been careful with the features it chooses to integrate into its phones, especially if it requires additional specialized hardware."

I think people are going over the top a bit, the camera does not take x-ray pics, and perverts will not be able to use it for that intention.
I highly doubt that OnePlus will remove the use of the camera because of the ability to see through specific types of plastic, the supposed see through clothes is more bullsh** , only very sheer and thin fabrics can be seen through and it has to be tight for you to even see anything.
But worst case scenario and OP do remove the use of the camera then they will either have a lawsuit against them or someone will open the use of the camera again with root.
omg seriously...
ITS NOT A DAMN X RAY!
You cannot see people naked by using the filter camera.
People need to grow up
the op 8 pro color filter will be disabled in a future update because social media hyped it up like it was a true x-ray magic camera when this is completely wrong.
I want to know what the official stand of OnePlus is on this matter because if that fourth camera sensor gets completely disabled we are losing actual hardware functionally that we paid for, it's like disabling half of the ram and storage space after you sell the phone, yes I know it's not an important feature for most people, but still it's part of the hardware of the phone and part of the price.....
What is next , disabling the zoom of the s20 ultra because you can spy on people from far away? You understand that this is completely ridiculous.

This seems kinda official. Im not sure if this will be for the Asian markets only, but I don't think so.
In any case, this is ridiculous. This is not the Sony camera from the late 1990s.
Yep, that's really ridiculous and hard to understand that OP is really disabling this....
Also I'm not sure what this time limited disabling should do, either I have that camera or not...
BTW infrared photography is a well known subject in photo enthusiast communities and without any slippery context whatsoever - so why the fuss at all?! ....
In the end this is sad news for me, I actually liked the infrared look in photos and the fact that my OP8P could do it....

yeah exactly ,and if oneplus do this then everyone has a reason and right to ask for a refund !
Oneplus reacted with a statement, seems as if the camera is going to stay on OOS at least....

It still worries me with the "limiting functionality" bit.
They're only doing this in China from what I have heard. Maybe the chinese government would've stepped in (wouldn't be a surprise at least)

Hey OP, I saw your video on XDA and then I tweeted about it...which led to it circulating heavily among blogs/YouTubers. That's probably where all the views came from, lol. Never expected this issue to blow up like it did!
Is possible to downgrade to have the feature back if I buy a phone with Photochrom feature already disabled?
This is only happening on HydrogenOS (OnePlus phones in China), and they do plan to bring it back as soon as they can figure out how to deal with the issues. So its only temporary.
It should also be known that by disabling this, if you are using HydrogenOS, this will only disable the Photochrom filter since its the only filter that uses that camera.

You can still do lots of videos about it. How to preserve Oxygen OS version, how to downgrade, how to enable back after update...
Well .. I for one am not taking that kind of update if it does come to Oxygen...
Or we will all get a real photochrome camera and start posting pics of us all looking through "BLACK PLASTIC"

I guess it will depend if the update is just the camera.apk or the entire system.
I'm from China and i got a close communication with some of the developers in oneplus. It's really ridiculous that some of the people via media spread the news that the color filter works like an X-ray. Also a lot of female got afraid of it in weibo which I consider nonsense. Most of the oneplus users in China also got shocked and a bit annoyed. However, the filter would not be removed in oxygen OS according to some news. And in Chinese forum, one of the administer says the filter will be reproduced and likely to come back in June.

Question P6 pro photos and videos

The photos looks great once I take them, but once I upload them to Facebook or whatever the res seems to be shocking, even on WhatsApp I upload them as Full Res and still they look awful, is this what photos would actually look like from this phone without Google's magic touches? I see other uploads from different people using iPhones and they look quite good

Funny you mentioned it. I have the same issues, I mainly daily my Sony Xperia 1 III and they images and videos look mediocre. I have Google 1 service so I upload full quality and still they look mediocre.
Any app that bypasses Googles computational photography is going to produce some pretty (by comparison) dire results. All phones process the photos though, it is just if they process it for a given app as well.

I have read your post wrong, i am very sorry, i read it that you were taking photos using WhatsApp. Once the photos have been taken using the Google camera and saved they should look great where ever you look at them.
Take a look at peoples shots here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/pixel-6-pro-photo-showcase.4354503/
I haven't noticed any issues with my photos uploaded to various sites - they all look just as good as they do on my phone.
They probably reprocess the image to make it lower resolution and look bad.
