Change voice in a Google Maps Navigation - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

this may already be known to some, but I found it by wanting to change the voice and messing with settings.
Go to voice input menu.
Click on text to speech.
Click on default engine.
Change from pico to Samsung
check off box always use my settings.
Now try navigating.
This beautiful voice is 100 more times enjoyable and comforting than the alien robot voice I've heard since Android existed.

Only problem with the Samsung TTS, when I use it for Nav at least, is that it doesn't say street names, just tells you where to turn. Pico actually says the name of the street.

I had the same problem. I like hearing the name so I don't have to look down to see what it is. Same for exits...just says to exit nothing else.

Oh dang that sucks then.. I will look for proper tts modules

On the Hero it was as simple as renaming the language file on your SD card. Say you liked the British voice better, simply rename the Brit one to the US file name. There were a few words / phrases it didn't have and switched voices for briefly, but for the most part it worked just fine.

I'm using svox. Each language has several voice options and im pretty sure it says street names.

I also use svox and yes it does say street names.

I'd rather just hear a tone or beep when a turn is approaching.

[APP] Keyboard S

I've been using this app called Keypad S for a few days as one of my lockscreen shortcuts (and nova launcher gesture targets).
I think the idea is genius and the implementation is very clean and fast. It works extremely well as an app launcher (google search is awful at that) and a T9 dialer.
Keypad S is a super dialer for Android phones. You could use it to search for apps, bookmarks, contact names, email addresses, phone numbers. All in one place.
How to use?
1. Type in the query using the number keys with corresponding letters: e.g. 36245 for "email" app
2. The search results will instantly appear on top as you type
3. Click the icon in search results to open it, or click the phone key to dial the number

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a good implementation of search. But I'm pretty sure the Google search app is good enough for this.

Main reason I went looking for an alternative was that google search fails to find my apps half the time (or it takes ~5 seconds). I've done EVERYTHING to find the issue and I came up empty handed.

Shapewriter for Galaxy S3

I recently upgraded to the Galaxy S3. I loaded on my favorite keyboard, Shapewriter, and was disappointed to see that it didn't fill the screen like it did on my other phones. Is there anyway to make it take up the whole bottom of the screen like all the other keyboards? Thanks for any help.

send a note to the developer... they might not be aware and just need to edit it for the larger screen...

It's no longer supported. I have a backup of the APK that I use to install it with. It's not even on the Play anymore as far as I know.

That's clearly not supported on 720p screen, never heard of the keyboard but if you find people that likes it a developer might be able to help

If I recall, Shapewriter was bought by Nuance and incorporated into the FlexT9 keyboard and now those features are incorporated into the latest Swype beta...
So maybe try that?
You can always lower your dpi

I downloaded the Swype Beta. It's going to take some getting used to, but overall I think it's better than the default Samsung keyboard.
I prefer shape writer over all the rest I've tested. The automatic addition of a space after a period (.),saves hitting the space bar more often than deleting the space. The ability to retroactively capitalizewith one key does not require retype. The selection of typed words with one touch, allows the original selection list to be recalled.
I can't believe they did this all two years ago. Nuance now owns shapewriter.

Google now doesnt call local businesses

since the update to jellybean i have not been able to call local places by saying ie call gamestop and it calls the closest gamestop to me. it either pulls up random contacts or says no contact found and leaves a search bar for videos about the said business. anyone else with this prob? or a fix?
i have the same issue.. my guess is we have to wait for google.
If I say call game stop or any business it trays to call a contact in my phone that sounds nothing gets like what I say lol
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Same problem here. The old google search was great for calling local businesses. Has Google addressed this issue?
Thank Apple and their idiotic patents for that. Google had to strip a few features to try and stop a sales ban from happening in the future.
Don't worry if Google comes out on top in the end it may be added back.

I do not believe this is why it doesn't work. If I clear the data on Google search (or reinstall the app) the voice search will work just like before. I say call "business" and it finds the nearest and dials it. After a few hours it will stop working and only pull up my contacts. If it was a feature removed then it wouldn't work at all. It definitely appears to be a bug. Very frustrating bug.
Instead of saying call "business".. say "business" phone number and it pulls up the closest numbers In Your area..
I use this to call dominos about 2 to 3 times a week.. lol
I say "dominoes phone number" and it pulls up the 3 closest to me..
Hope this helps..

Google Now not working right. Anyone else seen this???

So if I use Google Now (NOT SVoice) to call someone here is an example of what I see a lot:
ME - CALL JOHN SMITH HOME
Google Now - completely recognizes "Call John Smith Home" (since that is exactly what it transcribed in the search bar).
Google Now - shows a card for Davy Jones Mobile (as an example).
For some reason the card it picks is COMPLETELY different from what was transcribed up top.
Anyone else seeing this?
Works fine for me...what rom are you running? What mods? These are things you a should include along with your question.

Sorry I am 100% stock
Here is an example. You can tell by the names that neither of them are standard names, but Google Now PERFECTLY recognized what I was trying to say, and wanted to call COMPLETELY the wrong person:

Have you tried to delete cache & data of Google Voice/Search? You could always delete it & re-install to see if it helps or not.
Happens to me as well. I am stock on att.
I have read somewhere that you need to have the contacts synced to Google. Are yours phone or Google contacts? I use only phone contacts.
had google now have issues 2 days in a row on my GN2 and N7. So it seems to be a issue throughout there whole system. Didnt seem like to big of a issue, just had to reconnect it.
Edit*
Nevermind. Don't wanna be mean.

Not sure what you said, but would love to hear what you had to say nicely.
To the others, my contacts are and have always been sync'd to Google. I will try the reinstall, and clearing cache, etc.

[App Proposal] What do you think? -On the Edge of the World-

So, hello everyone it's been a while.
For those who wonder what the heck is this guy,
I made this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/themes-apps/edge-navigation-bar-button-t2950486
Anyhow, let's get to the point.
I've been around making this app... called 'On the Edge of the World', or 'the Edge of the World', or 'World Edge' to shorten a lot.
For now, it's quite simple. It basically works in three steps.
1.When loaded,(that is user swipes edge panels and World Edge shows up), it checks gps location.
2.Then it retrieves google maps image from online and shows the image on the edge panel
3.Also, it writes down the address of current location.
I have fooled my phone so that it thinks that I am at the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island.
See the image below of the prototype I have worked on.

}
GPS locations are not re-called automatically after once it's loaded due to battery issue.
You can refresh your GPS location manually by clicking that Compass icon below, though.
(Yes, it's the icon from Safari. Sorry Jobs, I have always been shameless about stealing great icons.)
So that's basically it, at least for now.
What do you think? Too gimmicky?
What kind of functionality does this app need to become a killer-app?
Let me know.
Reserved just in case
Good work again. And what about battery use?
Possibly a GPS navigation system using just the edge with voice prompts. It can display an arrow when you need to turn(flashing arrow for a hundred meters or so) and have the voice telling you where to go. Make sure it has downloadable maps so it doesn't cost using wireless internet.
Good enough idea for you?

Similarly to the Google Maps micro on Wear? I could get down with that!
Love the idea, can't wait to see it in action!
