To GB or not GB, that is the question. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the official GB is out but is it worth it?
I've been running Frozen with Genocide for about 6 months - really happy with it.
Fast, smooth, good battery life (rarely will I have to plug it in during the day).
I know some good GB based ROMs will be coming soon from the awesome devs.
But are there any compelling reasons to update to stock GB other than the novelty?

I to had this same dilema. I was running sfr rom which was incredibly fast and stable but it still wasn't everything I wanted so I took the plunge to EI22 and I have to say I am very happy with my decision! I am rerooted and running the era legendary rom and it is everything that sfr was and more. Amazingly fast and so far super stable. No random reboots and quick connecting gps. Very worth upgrading to gingerbread as these excellent roms that have already surfaced are only going to get better!

I'm running EI22 stock deodexed with Nubernal and poit's battery mod until the custom roms become more complete. Tested almost all of them and they're great, I'm just OCD about details and 4g working consistently. I was steadfast on SFR and Twilight and I'm plenty satisfied.

What he said - my experience has been the same. GB > Froyo stability wise, and everything that I had with Froyo (Wireless Hotspot, no CIQ, WiMax) now works with GB and works better.

Went back to EC05
The second I found out about the OTA push to EI22, I flashed back to stock immediately, downloaded the OTA, tried it out. Then I flashed a pre-rooted EI22 and loaded RandomROM EI22 ThunderHawk. Excellent ROM, but I experienced a random 3G radio reboot and got paranoid, so for now, I'm back on EC05 with RandomROM Phoenix & Genocide. I can wait a little bit for some of the minor bugs to get worked out, but I know good things lie ahead for current and future GB ROMS. Pretty stoked about it!

You should try out era legendary 4.0.1! It is amazing! No kind of problems on my end as of yet and I've been running it like crazy the last 3 days... no reboots of any kind and no ramdom fc's from anything... everything works and works well so far

What is the preffered rom for Epic?
viperrom seems to be good and bonsai4all too. I'm saying this based on the replies those threads got
i just asked this question on the development and got a new ahole torn, so I'm bringing my question here
thanks
I'm looking for a rom that is stable, fast and has a good gps fix
ease of install would be nice too that viperrom looks scary to install. why the hell do I need SDK? why no just basic update.zip to install the damn rom?
hi again, in my opinion they are both good, and so are the other 2.2 roms. im using bonsai for now, and im happy. hope this helps
I have tried several and my son is currently running Viper. All are fine, but I am currently running Nebula and find it is the smoothest and quickest on my phone. GPS seems to vary by phone. I recommend you dive in and keep flashing until you find one you like as it seems a ROM that runs flawless on one Epic, may not be so great on another.

I 2nd this. Viper is too much of a dark theme for my taste. I like Mammons Bonsai alot. I would go Novas rom as my second pick.
I wish rom manager was supported well on this phone. I miss that on the droid. it was so easy to switch around roms. I could just download it straight to the phone and jump around roms.
I just installed bonsai4all, we'll see how well it works for now. it's on 1st boot, so just waiting for it to fire up, then I'm gonna play around with it.
that viperrom looks very confusing to install!
ahhh!!!!! I don't have a radio connection. was I supposed to install some new radio related items!?
Bounced between most of 'em once 2.2 hit and were all good. Cycled through and thoroughly enjoyed several versions of Quantum Rom, but have setteled on Nebula Rom.... which is uber and the way to go imo.

Follow my guide for odining froyo. When you flash roms you need the dk28 modem wich you get if you odin froyo.

Yeah I did Odin and got iT working til I messed something up and now I'm stuck at the samsung window.
I'm gonna try nebula... My phone and bonsai didn't get along
I recommend bonsai4all with ext4 and no journaling. I generally pull ny phone off the charger at 7am and use it moderately and when I go to bed at 11 I'm rarely below 40%. Also in terms of performance my quadrant score is in my sig and its in the midrange of the spectrum for people running my setup.

[Q] I just down(or up lol)graded to EC05

Rooted and what not. Looking to flash a rom and what not. If anyone remembers my 16gb sd card not working a few months ago it's magically working now, go figure. I think it's allergic to gingerbread. So yeah the question is which ROM and mods etc for EC05 are the best for speed and reliability? Going to wait for a few opinions before flashing. Thanks in advance
I used to use midNIGHT when i was on EC05 when it was first dropped on us but I don't know how updated the others are.. Please leave links if you're gonna help!

I just went back to midNight when I was done playing with the GB leaks; still runs great. Every so often SU wants to update. I don't futz with it. With GB source nearly here (and the new dump now here) they'll be new GB ROMs soon and they'll have whatever the new SU wants.
I dropped froyo the second we got a custom gb source kernel. Never looked back

[Q] best rom

I have been using Bonsai 4.0 for a long time. I would like to get a gingerbread ROM.
Which one would be the best?
I need good battery life.
I need good GPS.
I need no crashes.
Thanks everyone!

Really your results may vary from others expierence so with that taken into account try Legendary 2.2. I used that for a while and was able to squeeze out around 18+ hours in low signal areas. I don't know if the gps is alright but there is a fix and its not a flashable it has to do with permissions. Also you can add the newest samurai kernel with that. Since your on an old rom I'm sure you have no clue about the mtd and bml partitions available so be cautions on what you download and flash. If your on bml make sure the kernel is as well.
Another suggestion is try cm7 with the samurai kernel. If 4g isn't a deal breaker.

I personally reccommend Clean GB MTD. Its super stable for me and doesn't inlcude to much extra stuff that pulls from you battery. I like something simple and functional so this was my pick. Also if you decide to use it make sure to read about MTD first in android development because it functions quite differently.

I changed from Bonsia to CleanGB MTD over a week ago & REALLY like this new rom.
Much faster & smoother. My vote is for CleanGB MTD......
Do a little reading first though.....
Ok, like the OP, I have been running Bonsai 4.0 from day 1. (I guess it works so well, we never look for upgrade? or maybe the 4.1 brick fiasco scared us off, lol)
Epic 4g flashed to cricket, rooted, CWM 3.0, ext4, goLauncher. fairly happy, but could use some more speed and battery, plus new toys are FUN. So....
Let's have it out. Here's what my research has turned up:
Bonsai 4.1.3 (stable, but froyo based)
vs
Sprint's new OTA GB update (don't really wanna unroot unless there's something amazing about this, plus as a cricket customer, can I even get this update?)
vs
Legendary
vs
CleanGB
vs
SleeperROM
I've heard a bit in this thread about SleeperVSCleanGB, but I'd like more comparisons, and to hear about any other candidates/factors we should be considering (Xtreme? will I lose ext4 by switching to MTD? should I care?)
thx a bunch for your time!
Yes you will lose ext4 by switching to mtd... but you gain yaffs2 which is much more stable than ext4... so no worries there... and I have tried every ei22 rom out and the best bml imo is legendary and the best mtd is viper rom or cleangb mtd.... being a cricket user you probably won't get the ota because sprint is who pushes it out... also if your using bonsais recovery you will need to flash cwm 5.0.2.7 (officially supported for our phones) before trying to upgrade to a custom ei22 rom... you won't lose root by going to any of the custom roms cuz root is already in the roms as you probably know... and imo ei22 is way better than froyo... only problem with ei22 was the gps (I never had any problems but most did) but all of the custom ei22 roms have the gps fix built in... happy flashing!

Personally my favorites are cm7 and miui.us, though I haven't tried any ei22 based roms.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Im on MIUI at the moment, but I've tried quite a few. You can read as many posts about how a certain ROM works. But, you won't really know what suits you and your phone until you try them out!
BTW- I Like MIUI a lot, except for how fast my batteries die(i carry a backup).
I go through both in LESS than 12 hours, easy! Then again, the problem may be with my phone or the charger i'm using, so don't let me discourage you.
I suggest CM7 but I'm bias as I assist with the development.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427645
Really the best thing to do is try all of them and see what you like best each phone reacts differently with different ROM. Many people report CM7 being the best battery wise but others have terrible results.
GPS wise most roms share the same GPS fixes so you shouldn't notice a difference between individual roms.
Cool, thx for the feedback. I will check out Viper, MIUI, and CM7 (been eyeing cyanogenmod for a while, but I thought they hadn't ported for Epic 4G yet?)
Also glad my fear of leaving ext4 is gone....by bye BML, hello MTD!
Now, if we can just get that ICS ported.....

Also seems like I should try the BML roms 1st, since if I want to switch back from a MTD rom, I have to Odin it, yes? (Seems the layers of complexity/risk go apps/themes/launchers/titanium backups/CWM restores/ODIN.... I feel like I want to avoid ODIN except in emergencies, lol)

Odin really isn't that bad as long as you don't use the stock cable and get a good one... a follow all directions to the T! And yes to go back from mtd you do have to odin... but like I said not that bad... I do it at least once a week...

For me, IMHO, it is a toss up between Clean GB and Starsky ROM (both MTD versions).

Just purchased E4GT

Like the title said, I finally jumped on board. I got the Evo at launch, and used it until October. I saw the Epic when it came out, but I thought it was too big, so I decided to wait for the iPhone. Well, long story short, it was a mistake lol. Small screen, locked-down software, etc etc. Well now that bad boy's gonna be up on craigslist and I'm back in the world of Android.
So far, I'm very pleased.
Any rom recommendations? I use to run Calkulin's Evo rom for a while, and I see that he has an Epic rom, so I guess I'll give that a spin first
Just try out his rooted fb17 build with the fb15 modem I've been using it as my daily since it was dropped.
Ics is super awesome on this phone just for the love of god DO NOT USE CWM TOUCH RECOVERY. i don't wanna see another i bricked my phone thread lol.

I would advise against using any of the ICS roms as they are not daily driver status yet (I'm running an fb21 setup so I know).
Go with Blazer 4.0, until more work is done on the ICS ones, this will be your best bet for battery life, stability, and smoothness. I ran Calkulin's for a long time and his rom is good but Blazer definitely gets better battery life.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Try them all but some good advice is until you get comfy with flashing and the little changes from the OG Evo to the Epic, I would just flash stock custom roms and leave those ICS roms alone like the poster above me just said. No need to bork your new phone so fast incase you do something wrong. Also stay away from the Touch recovery until they do some more testing on it... Just my opinion
I'd recommend both Calkulin's ROM, and Blazer ROM at the current time (And they're both excellent developers, so i'd think their future releases will be good also)... not to say the other ROM's available aren't good, I just personally haven't used them so I can not speak on something I haven't experienced. I expect a lot of ROM's to be released soon based on ICS, so the ROM recommendation might change soon.
Welcome, enjoy your new phone
Thanks for all the recommendations. Honestly, I haven't had much of a reason to root the device. The main reason I rooted the Evo was to get rid of Sense, and increase battery life.... needless to say I have neither of those problems on the E4GT.
I'll probably just root but stick with the current ROM I'm running so that I don't have to start from scratch. Once the ICS roms become more stable, I'll look into those.

Honestly, that's what I am doing. I have a stock ROM with root and CWM... and I'm observing the ICS progress and waiting for a decent, stable ROM/Kernel/Recovery then I'll make a change. My phone is important to me, so I observe to watch the testing and such before diving in.
I kept it stock myself and its been very well.... Bought my et4g about a week ago also for 200 bones... Frekaing steal basically
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
There are several Alpha/Beta ICS roms out right now but I would strongly suggest using the older ones for now. Too many people are bricking their phones trying to run ICS. If you must do ICS I would suggest completely restoring your phone back to 100% stock and then installing ICS to a stock/unrooted rom.
I personally am using Calkulin's EL29 (v.2.8.1) rom with the EL29 Kernel and EL29 baseband. It is Gingerbread 2.3.6 but it is insanely stable, extremely responsive; especially if you don't use the TouchWiz but instead use GoLauncher.
I rooted mine so i could delete twiz and all the bloat, then i found team nocturnals dark ics blend rom and flashed it and the fb21 modem and life is good, got rid of all the ugly colors and twiz and fb21 modem increased my 3g data from 100kbps to 1mbps now when i use my og evo it looks dirty from the lower screen quality and its sooooo laggy compared to thia beast
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Cm9 ftw! It's a few more steps at the moment to flash and get some fixes for gps and ext sd to work, but it's so beautiful on this phone. I can't stand tw and all the bloat.

[Q] The most stable/bug free rom that can rival Blazer 4.0?

I haven't flashed in months and never tried flashing any ICS roms yet because from what i read so far that ICS is nowhere near as smooth as Gingerbread roms. Of course it been about about 4 months sense my last flash.
Can ya bring me up to speed on these new roms,is ICS as smooth and bug free as Blazer 4.0 GB,what doesn't work in MIUI and CM9,or should i just reflash Blazer 4.0 for smooth/bug free rom?
I need to reflash because my son dipped my phone in toilet today and power button doesn't work except to turn on the phone,so im starting to think that its software related, hopefully flash will fix it.
Oh,i used that app that tells me if my Epic is in ICS Brick danger, the app says it is,are the chances great for it to get bricked with ICS rom if i flash it right?
Thanks in advance.

I can give you my opinion- I ran blazer 4.0 and 4.1- flawless roms- besides smooth, fast and efficient. I tried the Blue Kuban- had no mms, no internet and force closes. So in my opinion- still in beta mode- not yet polished. I tried blazer ics- no problems- except had no boot to recovery- and no theming yet- so- I would say- blazer ics is more stable than blue k. but
not as intricate- bricking will come only if you dont follow flashing directions- c a r e f u l l y. read- read- and read again-
watch video ( thnx to qb king 77 ) and in no way do I mean to offend any developer whatsoever- I have much respect for the tough and creative jobs they do ! But I went back to 4.1 blazer- for now...

Surprised nobody has mentioned Super Galaxy rom yet. It's very stable and has great features.
Also, running any aokp/aosp roms will have small glitches and qwerks to them. As long as you can deal with the small things, aokp/aosp can be the best rom. My suggestion is to run something else until Samsung releases source to build aokp...

I've been running Blu Kuban since it dropped and I've had nothing but smooth sailing. It's an amazing ROM with incredible development support. You can keep it as simple as you like or customize it to your taste.
All ICS ROMs are basically beta because we don't have source, yet. But there are more than a few fantastic ICS ROMs out there that are very suitable for use as a daily.
Just read through the Development section and try out a few, that's the best way to know what works best for you.
Tnz Blend rom has probably the best battery life. But in terms of smoothness, nothing can top blazer. IMO

We had this debate before on here,as far as i remember the verdict was that Blazer is more cleaner with fewer mods making it more stable, while Calcun's has more mods.
I went with blazer because i like my roms light weight, with not to many added scripts and bug free.I been running it for about 4 months and Blazer had me forget about flashing intill stable ICS is released.

I think HTC and OG Epic roms are more how should i say it-internally modded/coded.
Blazer and other roms are better than stock because devs have removed Carrier IQ spyware and alot of other junk and made a few mods to them,so they are definetly better and have better battery life.
cm9
Just trying out blue kuban after being on cm9...loved cm9 but battery was terrible due to the kernel...lets see what blu kuban can do....so far, very fast, lots of options and very blue. Great ROM.

Parnoid Android 1.5 gets my vote. Tablet mode is really sweet. I flashed it a couple weeks ago and haven't noticed any bugs at all.
Ok,i think ICS is stable enough now to try.
Would it be safe to say that Phantom Blazer is one of the best and most stable ICS roms?
Gotta give dazednconfused's wicked sensations a try! Super fast, buttery smooth, and good battery to boot! Plus really nice theming.

Your experience will be what matters. My preference has been Agat's slightly themed/modified ROM and Blazer (going back to the best GB ROM ever - in my opinion). BluKuban has great support and loads of 'pickable' features. AOKP and CM9 are super customizable - by you I mean, you'll have to figure out how you want it.
If you take the time and read through the stickies AND followup posts you should be good to go.
Flash a few. Try a new one every other day or so; I did. I'm a stickler for the basics working first (making calls, email, sms, mms, GPS and calendars) then adding the bells whistles and tweaks as a secondary but nice thing.
Blu Kuban is definitely the top dawg at the moment, although the new ICS Blazer probably comes pretty close.
