[REVIEW] Black D3O Flex case vs Generic Clear S TPU case - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

The D3O cases as many are already familiar with here, are a perfect fit, however the buttons are waaaay too hard to press (not recommended if you flash your phone a lot)
The Flex Protect version of the case, is at least easier to put on and take off than the dual tone Dual Impact version.
The D3O Dual Impact cases feels like a solid plank of wood, is not heavy, but it's absolutely not flexible enough for you to easily put the phone in, or take it out.
(Dual Impact photos coming later)
You almost have to break the case in two to get the phone out of a Dual Impact case.
In the other hand of the spectrum we have the cheapo generic Clear S TPU case with the dual tone S shape which is not a perfect fit (as you can see from the pictures), but the case does a way better job and it really highlights features of SGS2 really well
The grip is amazing with the Clear S TPU case, no more slipping off the hands, like it was in when using the D3O case, the matte like finish is nice, but it becomes slippery in a dry hand.
The difference between the 2 cases are night and day, D3O is perfectly tailored for the T989, however it's not user friendly, while the cheap Clear S TPU is not a perfect fit, it does everything better than the D3O
I got the Black D3O Flex Protect case from Tmo online store https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/AddOn...415d-b2d0-0254711cf682&inCart=True&catCode=21
and the Clear S TPU from DX http://www.dealextreme.com/p/protective-tpu-back-case-for-samsung-sgh-t989-translucent-white-93678
DX = DealExtreme

I had these links in my post about SGSII cases and really like the look of the TPU S case.

I have the D3O Case really good case perfect fit for the Samsung G2 T989 Very Nice case

I have the d30, I just hate how hard it is to use the power button..

I read somewhere else to cut a small piece of paper and fold it and put it where the power button is. It works great makes the power button. Super easy to use. I did it for both the power button and volume rocker

I do know about all the work around to make the D3O cases buttons easier to press
but there's no fixing the texture of the case itself to make it less slippery

Never mind - my bad.....

The Diztronic Matte Back Black Flexible *Revision 2* listed for sale on Amazon gets really good reviews. I've been looking at a case since I got my phone a few weeks ago, but keep vacillating on whether to get one or not......anyway, this one gets stellar reviews (48 so far) with 4.5 out of 5.
Here's the link (I'm in no way affiliated with the retailer or mfg'r) http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Flexible-Revision-TPU-Cases-Packaging/dp/B005YEFM8M

What I don't like about the paper mod is that if you drop the phone you are more likely to damage the buttons with the extra pressure the paper creates.
A simpler mod is to just take a razor blade and cut slits in the rubber. This allows the rubber buttons to flex in the middle and reach the phone buttons easily. There are no gaps and the cuts are invisible even when pressed. I did it to my case and the buttons work GREAT now. This absolutely fixes the problem. The manufacturer should do this themselves. It makes an already great case nearly perfect.
The yellow marks are where I put the cuts. I used my pocket knife. A razor would do a cleaner job but the cuts are self healing since no material is removed. I left the center piece uncut between the volume buttons and the ends of each button for longevity. The cuts are only where the yellow marks are at in the pictures. I recommend starting from the middle and working your way to the outside when cutting the slits for the volume buttons to prevent accidentally cutting through the center section.
Dirt and debris still can't get in since there really isn't a gap created.
Best wishes to all my S II modding brethren.

Will have to try this little trick out. I have the gray on black D30 case and the buttons are a P.I.T.A to press. I have had my phone for about a month and a half so I'm kinda used to it by now but it's still annoying. For this reason I make sure any ROM I flash includes the Advanced Power Menu for easy access to recovery mode. I am not looking forward to the day when I may have to manually enter recovery mode .
As an aside, if anyone can point me to a nice case with a good kickstand it would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, there are people in the other D30 cases thread saying that their cases have cracked. Anyone here have this happen to them yet?

......................

looks good

I looked at this case also but choose the d30...however the caller on the line hears and echo of themselves when speaking....pretty annoying southern and me because i end up taking the case off. That's with the d30. Happen to anyone else?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

Can I just bring back my D30 to T-mobile store and ask for replacement if it develops crack like someone mentioned? I bought it from the store and have receipt and everything.

I just bought the D3O flex protect case. The power button is a bit tougher than having no case, but its not unbearable. I actually think that I wont hit the power button by accident any more now.
Case seems ok. It doesnt add much thickness or look to the phone, and I actually think it feels more secure in my hand than not having a case (stock sides feel slippery).
As for cracking.. I dont see how the flex protect case will crack because its flexible.

Yes none of my flex cases have cracked ( I dont see how they would either ) , but the duel impact hard shells have all cracked.

Was just thinking about something, the power button is actually pretty well protected in the D3O case ... lol dropping it on the power button pry wont even turn it on.

Vibrant TPU Case question

After reading a few threads here about the best case, I decided that I will purchase a TPU case (clear smoke argyle). I was looking at ebay and see the same item/design by these 2 sellers. One is $3.87 other is $7.49. Anyone know what the difference between these 2 is?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370473226743 - $3.87
http://cgi.ebay.com/Argyle-Smoke-Flexi-Skin-Cover-Samsung-Vibrant-T959-/310291583683 - $7.49
There is another for $6.95 it says that it comes in a retail package, where as the first one it says it's "generic." Looks the same to me in the pictures.
http://cgi.ebay.com/SMOKE-Argyle-So...617919?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item255d54a37f
Any help? Oh, and I looked around a lot, but wasn't able to find one without the argyle pattern that is also clear smoke. (didn't like the hybrid one too much). Anyone away of any such case?
Thanks!
I bought a smoke case from accstation and it seems to fit well, but the case is so rigid that the case over the power and volume keys make it very hard to press the keys. After some careful stretching they seem to work well enough, at the aesthetic expense of those small areas of the case. I also bought a similar Purple TPU case from post3rs on Ebay. It seemed to have the same issue over the power and volume buttons. I've dropped the vibrant on concrete from 4 feet 3 times with that case and so far it's saved me, and i'm considering cutting out the power + volume with a razor knife.......... Not sure how some of the more pricey cases compare in this arena but it's worth mentioning my experience.
i think they are all the same cases, but rustychiles is right, its extraordinarily rigid making the buttons hard to press, i would recommend that "best case" over the argyle one since its far easier to press the buttons, on the other hand, it is a nice looking case
also, to rustychiles, don't cut out the buttons, they will become recessed and much harder to press, i tried that with a cheap silicone case cause i didnt like it and i was curious too, it doesnt work
Thanks for the reply guys.

Got it, thanks. I ended up going with the TPU argyle case. Not a big fan of the pattern, but I like the feel of TPU more than the hard plastic in the hybrid version.
be sure to give us your review on it when you get it!
btw, is it a hard cover or soft cover?
Ok, will do. It's a TPU case, so I think the feel of it will lie somewhere between soft silicone and hard plastic. Just the way I like it -semi soft or semi hard, depends on how you look at it.

Get the cheapest one you can get because you are going to have to cut out the buttons anyway. I have 2 of the TPUs and they are the best cases out there. Both of the TPUs were the same materials and the buttons are so hard to press you have to cut them out, which I did. I highly recommend TPUs.
I have 5 other types of cases (non-TPU) like Gel, etc and I can say that TPU offers the best combination of protection and feel. It doesnt catch lint in your pockets like other types do. I dropped it many times and no scratches whatsoever.

Update: Instead of cutting out the case over the power and volume buttons I heated up a flat head screwdriver with a flame and gently thinned out the TPU case over the power and volume buttons by gently melting and stretching the case and couldn't be happier with the results. The cases don't melt the way you want them to, and aesthetically I could probably do better next time by using a hot surface the same size as the area I am stretching but it doesn't look that bad and it's as functional as I'd like it to be now.
Don't cut the case! As someone else said, it makes the buttons recessed and hard to press. Take a small piece of tape and place it on the insides of the case, under the power and volume buttons. Works a lot better.

i agree, TPU is one of the best cases. i first got a TPU case for my iphone 3g and i loved it so much that when i bought my vibrant i got the exact same case for it
after the first day, i also learned that the buttons couldn't be pressed so i had to take an x acto knife to cut the holes out. now its not so bad
LOL @ cutting / blowtorching the cases... i used the tape method.

I'm glad I clicked on this post before posting my own...
I needed a temporary case while I wait for OtterBox to get off their duffs! The Note by itself is pretty thin and slippery for my hands and the back cover was already started to scuff up.
I checked Amazon.com, since I get free shipping through them, and saw the BoxWave DuoSuit case for the Note (which looks exactly like the one posted here, but in black).
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H13M2K/
It's a pretty nice case for the money, fit is nice and tight and it definitely makes it more grippy with a little knurled texture on the sides. Definitely not too bulky, I actually prefer it to the naked Note feel. Cut outs are ample so it protects without getting in the way of everything. The power and volume buttons are covered with wide rubber bumpers which is perfect for me because the buttons were too easy to press before. Now it only responds to intentional presses.
Obviously, this won't fit in the dock so it will come off when I put it in my dock at night, but that just gives me a chance to clean the inside of the case and keep it from collecting fluff.
I also dropped the phone just a couple minutes putting on the case and it made a dull padded thud, which I prefer to the clackle of unprotected phone hitting the floor. No notable damage.
I'm pretty happy for a $10 case. It's even almost kind of nice looking (I'm extremely picky).
I have this in black color
I have this case in black and white, and although a very nice case overall, I'm hating it due to it being a lint magnet, the whole screen after a day in my pocket is just covered in felt and dust, especially around the edges of the screen.
I've now ordered a hard plastic case..so disappointed

Trident Aegis Case - Pics and Brief Comments

Received my Trident Aegis case today. Went with the bright green (which I so far prefer to the darker green which they previously used, I had a Cyclops case in this color on my HTC Glacier.)
One gripe is, so far, the open space surrounding the camera on the back of the case. This is an odd decision. Not a big deal to me, though; but still worth mentioning.
The biggest gripe, though, is that the phone is not at all easy to actually get into the case. I'm not saying that it doesn't fit. The problem is that you first place the phone into the colored, gel surrounding piece. You then have to fit these piece (and its protruding buttons) into the very hard and rigid black/grey plastic piece. It's kind of hard to do this since the gel-covered buttons have to fit into the holes on the device, and I ended up hitting the power button over and over again, and botting into recovery because one of the volume rockers was held down.
My Cyclops case, for the Glacier, was designed in the opposite way. The phone first fit into two hard pieces (a front and back piece, basically), and then a black rubber surrounding piece went around the plastic itself. This was really easy to take the phone out of and place it back within.
I know people will ask...I'd say the phone doesn't add too much in the way of size to the already very large S-II, but the only comparison I have is the D30. I do not have the Incipio or Seideio cases to compare.
My aegis case for my vibrant was the same. Its how they all are in terms of getting it on. Waiting for mine to get for the sgs2

my main concern is how well it protects but a close second on how hard it is to get out of the pocket. if im going to spend to cash to get something that would work well i want it to be what i want. any opinions?
So overall how do you feel about the case?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I'd say pocket fitment is mostly contingent upon the pocket. I have been putting the SII + Trident case in the front pocket of shirts and it only sticks out a small bit. It fits in my jeans pockets, but I wear my jeans a bit baggy. It won't fit in the pockets of my dressier slacks. So, I find it easy to get out of most pockets. My Glacier + Trident was actually probably a bit more difficult due to the ribbed silicone surround. The case for the S II doesn't have much to snag on. Keep in mind though, that the Glacier + Case was a lot thicker, front screen to back battery cover, than the S II is. This definitely had something to do with it as well.
Overall I am pleased with the case. I like the color options, shape, and structural design of the case. While I did find the previous "Cyclops" style case that I had for my Glacier to be easier to take off and on, this new case seems, at least at first glance, to provide equal or better protection while also being easier to fit in pockets.
One footnote: I'm using this case along with a Zagg wet application invisible shield and I'm not having any issues with the corners peeling.
What did you pay? Looks sick.

Same question I had, it says on product page that it includes a "Re-Applicable Screen Protector".
BTW, coupon code "holiday2011" gives you a nice $7 off!
does the screen protector look to be of good quality?
I also noticed that the plastic doesn't hold/secure the rubber on the bottom of the phone, is it easy for the bottom corners to come off say when you're putting it in or pulling it out of your pockets?
Thanks!

The screen protector does look cheap. I'm not using it so I didn't really pay much attention to it. The hard case does not wrap around the bottom, so it is just the gel casing. But I haven't had any issues with the case coming off when putting the phone in my pocket

And yes, I got it from the tridenteer site.
i just ordered one... ill compare and take pictures comparing it to my incipio silicrylic case when i get the trident
I put the screen protector on. Used a wet install. Looks great so far. Smooth feel and very clear. It is dark outside right now, so I will report back tomorrow during the day. Looks really good in the house. Just a few air bubbles settling. I can tell they will go away though.
Screen protector is great. Really clear in light and dark. I'm sure there's better quality out there but for free its great. Also I have the green case. Get compliments like crazy about this case. Very high quality and looks pretty sick. Great protection. Great looks. Great case.
FYI the Incipio case has the slight gap around the camera as well.
The only issue I have seen, been using the case about a week, is the flap that covers the charging port doesn't want to stay closed. It doesn't hang down enough to cause problems really but isn't a tight fit and would def let dust in. Other than this small issue the case works great.

So after about a week of having the case on the phone, I have to say its a great case.
When I initially got it, it was TOO tight. So tight, that it would basically make my phone keep rebooting (pressing against the power button). I had planned on cutting out the section where the power button is altogether, but in the end i created too small slits on each side of the button indention. Once I did that, the case was good to go. It's a solid case. The grips on the side make it much easier to hold the phone. My biggest liking of this case is the hard plastic backing. I'm not a fan of complete rubber cases or complete plastic cases, both tend to have faults some how. But this case is the best of both worlds. The plastic and rubber sections are both in areas where its most beneficial. The case didn't make the phone too bulky either, thankfully. I think this case is only available in 2 colors, Grey & White and White & Grey (the color i have). If you're looking for a solid case that doesn't create too much bulk, then get this one. :good:

I'd like to know how that stylus pen works out for you. I'd be interesting in getting one.
^^I can't comment on this specific one, but in general these kind of stylus (with soft rubber tip) are pretty bad; I've tried a bunch, ranging from $1 to $30. They are all not very responsive (have to press hard on the screen to register sometimes) and you can feel the drag when swiping across the screen.

Boxwave leather wallet style case

Box wave recently posted this case on their site http://www.boxwave.com/google-nexus...ssic-book-google-nexus-5-case/bwpdd/mmp-zcmf/
I have the nexus 4 version of this case and the quality and durability is excellent. It really looks like an old bible or other classy looking book. This makes it the extreme opposite of a slick minimal case, but hey, that's not what you want anyway
There are a few things to be aware of though.
1) you can't adjust the volume while its in your pocket. The volume buttons are not accessible while the case is closed, so the phone has to be taken out of your pocket, flap opened, then volume adjust.
2) holding the phone/case in one hand feels really bulky since the flap is folded back on itself. The case is an inch thick, so holding that in hand is kinda ick, unless you really like a big beefy grip on your phone.
3) doesn't have auto sleep/wake.
These are my experiences with the n4 version. Despite the shortcomings, I still recommend this case if you want a wallet case with no magnetic flap to get in the way and don't mind that its very large and bulky.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Some other details to note:
Drop protection is high. It absorbs high impact extremely well since it's basically a glove made of cardboard and leather.
The cards fit just fine in the case, however they do directly contact the screen. I don't think plastic cards can damage the screen but I use a screen protector anyway.

Hi, I'm thinking of getting this case. I've never owned a wallet-style case, and I've got a couple of questions for you:
1) How well does it fit in a front jeans pocket? Is it a pain to get out on short notice?
2) I imagine it being sort of tricky to actually hold your phone up to your ear in this case. Is that the case?
Thanks in advance!
1) depends on how tight your jeans are the case I have is about an inch or two thick... I guess try putting 2 fingers side by side in your pocket (sideways duh). That's About the thickness.
2) its not hard to hold at all... Maybe even easier since it now basically has a giant handle. It is large in the hand though... Not thin and sexy.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the info! I'm used to carrying my phone full-time in my front pocket, but this may not work for me. OTOH, it's so cool-looking I may just have to find another way to carry it around.
What do the other cases use to wake the device when opened? Is it just a magnet to enable the sleep/wake feature?
I had the rearth wallet case for my N4 and looking to get this one for my N5 because it's one of the only one that doesn't have a clasp and looks like it's built well.
Only thing is it's out of stock until the 20th.
This is basically exactly what I was looking for! I have a similar case for my HTC One by Zenus (this one), but their case for the N5 is missing the area where you can put your bills in. This book case you mention does have this unless I am mistaken?
Another question: how hard is it to take the phone out of the case? I would like to only use the case when I'm on the road, so when I'm at work or at home I will regularly take the phone out of the case, so this should be a painless process.
Yeah it has a place for bills.

I got mine the other day but I didn't like the part the phone fits into. While it's nice the opening area for the power button also includes access to the Sim tray, I didn't like how the "lip" part was too close to the power button. Also the lip part would peel off my anker tempered glass screen protector whenever I squeezed the sides. So I replaced it with a poetic case I had.
I used a utility knife to cut it off and this Glue Dots adhesive I found at home depot.
