HTC Desire's 3G signal is much weaker than 2G.
I am at home, HTC Desire only has 1 to 2 levels of 3G signal, but full signal when turn to 2G. I use same SIM card on my Samsung i8000, 4-5 levels (5 is full) when in 3G.
How to fix the 3G weak signal of HTC Desire?

Are you rooted? If so, try flashing a different radio version as this can improve 3G speed and signal strength as well as Wi-Fi performance, and battery life.

have tried different versions of radio, no luck. which version of Radio is the best ?
2G has a greater range than 3g, I think.
When I'm in the middle of nowhere I always get a 2G signal even if I know there is a 3g tower closer than the 2G one I'm connected to.
I generally get better signal with 2G most of the time.

Hey guy,
You didn't read my first post carefully.

sorry,
phones perform differently, also some phones give you a misleading scale on the signal level, there is no industry standard as to what signal level 4 bars is afaik. manufacturers have been known to fudge scales of all sorts on their devices to make it appear better than a rival product.
try to get both phones to report signal level in dBm to compare accurately.
I also get relatively poor 3g signal with my desire compared to some other phones i have had...looking at bars, have never compare dBm.

Bars are no way to tell how strong the signal really is, since i flashed the latest radio i have a decent 3g connection without any bars.
If you already tried different radios there is no way to fix it, different devices will preform differently under the same conditions, nothing to do about that.

which radio you use regarded as decent?
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, but please understand that that will mean nothing for your situation.

this is what I am using. no good.
By the way, to all.
What I mean 3G signal is for voice. the reception is poor for phone call in 3G, it sucks when doing phone calls, but no problem in 2G. I place my SIM card into Samsung i8000, reception is strong and phone call has no suck at all.
Just asking because i remember getting more "bars" with Z and EVO roms back in the pre 2.3 days and that was before i knew i could physically go to about phone and see the actual strength of the signal i was getting. because im ussually 2 or 1 bars on cm7 and on Z and Evo it would be like 3 or 2 never one.
The radio does, I don't believe either of those effect the signal strength. I could be wrong though.

Yea i know radios do, im currently on the evo one. but I was just seeing if anyone else seemed to have better signal on different roms or kernels
Negative. Although using signal bars as a measure of signal strength can be misleading, because some indicators use different methods of displaying the strength. To know your true signal strength to go Settings and About Phone and poke around until you find it. It should be in -x dBm, and the lower 'x' is, the better your signal is.
How do I check my radios that are installed? Is there any goto for which radio should b used in which area? Which rom is generally producing the best signal strength? Or is the kernel that gives the signal strength? I'm on aokp and franko and I'm getting slow speeds at work when I would get decent speeds on paradigm and the included kernel.
Hi Guys,
I recently upgraded myself from Wildfire to Galaxy Nexus...
But the signal strength i got in my Galaxy Nexus is weaker than Wildfire..
This i am not sayin only by looking at the Signal Bars,,but also while talking in calls, i can realize that.
Is there any mods or any workarounds for this..
Cheers!!!!!!!
You can try flashing a different radio and see if it helps. Theres no perfect radio so its kinda trial and error, but some people are able to find a "best" one for them.
Aside from that, the GNex isn't known for having the best radio hardware ever, although I've never personally had issues.

I can see only one radio.. Can you suggest me some radios.. Thanks!!!!
Don't just compare the signal bars, they two phones have different ranges. You have to compare dBm between the 2 phones to know. My nexus shows no signal where my other phones show bars, yet both phones have same signal.
Is there an app to check the dBm i am having?

agree with this. bars show no useful information, it was put there for 'average folk' to have something to know if they can make a call or not, it is not a way to gauge from one phone to the next as they use different measurement methods. Not to mention each phone places it's antenna in a different location so you also should not be holding the phone when collecting signal data for comparison.
I personally have used an iphone 3 and htc inspire 4g and my gnex lets me get text messages and also maintain phone calls in areas of my apartment that the other two phones could not so I am quite happy. I didn't do dbm measurements on the iphone but on the inspire on average i would get 2-4dbm better signal strength on my gnex in areas i spend most of my time (bed, computer, work).

should work for measuring if you dont run cm10 or akop and can change the meter in the status bar
I've noticed lately my Zenfone appears to prefer a stronger 2g signal over a weaker 4g signal, and it's quite frustrating when I know the 4g is available and adequate even though it is weaker. Is there any way to tweak how the radio chooses which signal to use, and make it prefer a faster signal type (ie 4g, 2 bars) over a stronger one (ie 2g, 4 bars)?
I could very well be completely mistaken about how this works... Please don't hesitate to let me know if I'm just being an idiot about the whole thing, haha.
