How to go back to stock? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yes I have seen guides but none that applied to me. I used the method drockstar posted using ginger break and his clean kernal and I didn't need a pc to root. I have to turn my phone back Into my company for some software updates so need to go back to stock. I can't not loose som of our software that's currently on here. I do not have access to a pc either so I need to do it all on my phone. Any one have a link to how to do this? Thanks

If you are on a Gingerbread leak and also changed your modem, you will have to Odin in the EC05 modem, flash ReRFS ROM and flash stock recovery. You are always taking a risk of losing all your data this way. If it is a company phone you shouldn't root it. Go into Development and search for ReRFS ROM.

I am not currently on a GB leak
I am on
Firmware 2.2.1
basband d700.0.5s.EC05
Kernel 2.6.32.9build number DRockstar EC05 v1.02
I just used the Gingerbreak to root and then added he DRockstar kernel
Thanks

is it possible just to flash a stock kernel and then do the ota update and then turn my phone into them for their updates?

even better I will have access to a PC tonight and I have a cord so I could use odin etc.. what will I be able to do and not loose info on phone. thanks guys. I been reading post after post. how do you guys sort though all this info and make any sense of it.lol

Sorry to say it but if you use odin I really don't know if there is any way to save the data. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. I know how you feel as I to had to turn my phone in and lost everything including company software (didn't get into any trouble since the boss had me root his phone and he also lost all the data lol). Hope somebody can help you out more.

Updateing used epic

Searched and searched. Bought a used in great shape epic for my son for christmas and I wanted to set it up on cleanGB like I have mine and the wifes set up (very stable an fast). I odined it back to stocj ec05 and when it prompted to update it failed. So I tried the update.zip for ei22 thru recovery and it also failed. I've seen a thread here for the same problem but I couldn't find the thread. If some one could point me in the rite direction to get it to ei22 I would greatly appreciate it.
I have everything saved on my pc to root and apply all the fixes (gps, keyboard) and to root I just need to get the phone to that point first.
Thanks

You could odin in the recovery (ACS or CWM) while on EC05, then flash the EC05 to EI22 Modem zip file (somewhere in thee dev forum), then flash CleanGB.
Edit: I am pretty sure that the only reason you want the OTA update is to get the EI22 modem.

Mine won't update from EC05 either. I have to go back to DG27 which I got from the wiki thread.

did it update rite to EI22 that why or did it go thru the other updates first?
Forgive me for this question but why would you even want to wait on the OTA update if you are just going to flash an EI22 ROM over it? With EC05 (and backwards) you could even do the 1-click root method and not even mess with Odin.
Am I missing something with the OTA update? Is there concern with the EC05toEI22.zip? I used it to get to the EI22 modem and it was quick and painless.

i think this is the route im gonna take is do the one click root then flash everything i want on the phone
Don't forget to also apply the cwm 5 zip. You can do this after flashing cleangb if u want, but you will need to do the 3 finger method.

So you were able to get to EC05? If so, flash CWM recovery from Odin and try the 3 finger boot. Or actually, it doesnt matter if you got EC05 loaded or not, just Odin CWM and boot into recovery and flash CleanGB from there.

Nope. One clicks don't work on 2.3.5. You need to use Odin to install CWM 5.027, then pull the battery before it boots, power up into CWM first then flash a custom GB ROM.

Why not just have him install the gb3.tar kernel instead of "pull the battery before it boots" much easy and less fearfull.

Does that have clockwork in it too? Usually I say uncheck reboot in Odin but then you still gotta pull the battery and pop it back in then boot to CWM. Didn't mean to be scary..lol!

No but it qbkings tutorial he says to flash the kernel first.... then flash Cwm just saying it would be less chance of error. Something in the stock kernel has a script that searches for cwm and causes it to delet after the first boot anyways.....

Exactly! And no worries about it overwriting recovery as long as you flash a custom gb rom (there is a mostly stock one if trying to stay stock) as the kernel will be included with the rom... don't let biggorn scare you... its not scary to pull the battery after odin ;-)

Flashing a custom rom.... and a custom kernel.
Suggestions: legendary 2.2 and the samurai or shadow kernel
MarcusantRom revival v2..... just go through the android development forums to see which rom you'd like to use. Just be careful what your trying to download thought. If your Rom is BML or MTD then you have to download that type of kernel.

U don't even have to pull out the battery is instantly boots up into cwm that's what happened to me when I got my replacement that was already on ei22 I just connected to odin and flashed the latest cwm and had a rom already on my sd card so I just flashed the rom when it opened cwm for me
Its very easy and no worries and if it doesn't open cwm its not like your phone will brick or anything u just need to try again. To flash a kernel would be easy too

edit.
haha forgot there was a second page..... use remember you can go from bml to bml, or bml to mtd, mtd to mtd type roms. YOU CAN NOT JUST FLASH FROM MTD TO BML!!! you must odin back to ec05 and make sure repartition is checked and use the victory pit. happy playing
just remember though... after reading the information on these forums, and you are still unsure or whatever... ask questions, ask questions , ask questions...

Just got mine too. This is exactly what I had to do. I had a little trouble getting it to recognize my phone. If you have Win7 64 bit, make sure you install the drivers in the Program Files (x86) directory. Also, I had to run the included version of ODIN before connecting the phone, and also had to put the phone in DL mode before I connected it.

[Q] Unroot without Odin - USB Device not recognized

I'm having an issue with my t989 that has persisted since I stopped using Kang's ROMs and the Bullet Kernel.
After going from the Juggernaut ROM to Darkside's ICS when it came out, my phone started to not be recognized by any computer, be it OSX or Windows. I've tried everything on the PC software side, from clearing Kies and the Samsung Drivers, as well as clearing registry information and re-installing both separately, and this has not helped at all. The windows error is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I don't use antivirus, and I don't use a firewall, suffice to say I'm a programmer and have plenty of experience in doodling with phones, and I'm stumped. I've come to the conclusion that the Bullet Kernel installed from my Juggernaut days is the cause of the issue, as I repeated the process on a friend's device and he has the exact same symptoms.
With this situation, I'm not able to access ODIN to return to complete stock, so I can't flash over the Bullet Kernel. Alongside the USB device not recognized problem, I also was not able to get into ODIN / download mode until I made my own USB Jig to get around it.
Is there any way to get back to the stock kernel without ODIN? Would Mobile Odin Pro work if Chainfire added support for our device? It's really pissing me off as I'm a software developer and can't use my own device to build to.
EDIT: As a note, when moving from Juggernaut / Bullet to Darkside, I flashed the appropriate ICS radio and kernel, but when returning to 2.3.5 stock from Samsung, somehow the Bullet kernel managed to persist.
edit: nvm you answered my question.
Im not aware of a way to unroot without Odin Can you get into recovery?

There is still a way to get back to the Stock ROM ( 2.3.5 ) and Recovery, but the kernel flash was not included with the package:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
This is apparently the "Zedomax" unroot that does not need the ability to hook up to Odin, so needless to say, it's not unrooting that I need, it's getting back to the stock kernel that is the problem.
Obviously now that I'm unrooted, there really isn't a way for me to install Mobile Odin Pro even if I had it. I've been looking how to contact him to request it, because I don't want to be rude and PM him the request when I'm sure that's not the way that respected XDA members would want.
Can I ask why you think the kernel alone isn't being overwritten? That seems odd to me, since every ROM packs its own kernel, and flashing a kernel specifically only replaces the kernel. So if you flash an ICS ROM you're getting an ICS kernel, GB you get a GB kernel, etc. It wouldn't work otherwise. If you haven't done it already, you might want to try Darkside super and cache wipes.

Well, for one, I get a Bullet loading screen... Apparently reading through other threads, it's a known issue that Zedomax's Stock ROM method doesn't include the kernel, which basically means I may have f'ed myself permanently seeing as how I can't get ODIN access. Unfortunately, galaxys2root.com didn't tell people on their site that it didn't include the kernel, so needless to say, I'm never going to that site again and I would advise people not to follow any of their stuff either.
Although it's a small omission, their lack of providing information has just caused me to possibly lose a moddable phone.
EDIT: the threads that I've been reading through are the ones you supplied, RTFOP
So can you not get into download mode or get your computer to recognize your phone in recovery? If you're willing to tinker some you can back track and root and reinstall and overwrite that kernel and then circle back.

Well, to re-hash over what I've said already for clarification's sake:
1. I can get into download / ODIN mode
2. I still CANNOT get my phone to recognize in recovery. I know it's not my PCs, it's the phone, and I suspect the Bullet Kernel as it was not reverted back to the stock kernel when I flash Zedomax.
With that said, I don't see how it's possible for me to root and get CWM seeing as how I'm on stock Recovery (3e), and I can't ODIN. Unless there is a untethered way to root the t989, I think i'm up ****'s creek.
At what point did you lose root access though?

The whole point of flashing Zedomax's .zip is to unroot and go back to stock Samsung 2.3.5.
Just to verify, I downloaded root checker and it states I do not have root access.
So if you can get into Odin with your jig workaround, why can't you load a custom recovery and super user and then run Darkside wipes and install whatever ROM you want?

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding between you and I. When I say I can get into download / Odin MODE, that means I can force the phone itself into ODIN Mode, but since my computer does not recognize my t989, the ODIN application on my windows box does not recognize the phone, and the ID box does not 'turn yellow' as it should if my phone were recognized by my PC.
So even though my phone is waiting for the ODIN application on my windows to send it commands, I can't send it commands because the application won't recognize the phone.
Thus is my quandary.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't get that. Have you tried plugging it in without the sd card in? It's kind of a long shot, but errors on there might be keeping your computer from communicating with the device, since it seems to be working otherwise. Maybe the jtag repair service through mobile tech videos?

As you suggested, I tried taking out the SD card and that didn't help.
I'm trying to do as much as possible before I try and repair it. I may consider trying for a warranty replacement and take the risk, but I'd like to try everything I can before I take that step, I don't like not being able to fix something =p.

Need some help guys!?

My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

Sprints update system sucks......As for odin, you select the file you want to flash and click start......pretty stupid proof if you ask me. There is a .tar for the most recent update and the jellybean leak available in the development section.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. But anyways thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try and get this done tonight. Even though we both going for the note 2 in just a matter of days
