what's the deal with Google/Samsung? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

[NOTE] this is in regards to the US release
now that the other 2 "competitors" are out on shelves(RAZR & Rezound), Google/Samsung have no reason to continue to keep us in the dark about the actual release date. sure, we've heard about stores getting accessories now & verizon employees undergoing training on the phone.. but still.. what the heck. obviously they know the phone's going to sell well, so....
p.s. the whole possibility of it coming out on 'Black Friday' wouldn't look good for them considering it's THE day of deals so we'd expect it to be like 1/2 off that day or something.
thoughts?

i demand things now like a spoiled child! </sarcasm>

maybe they have problems with the delivery of the components and dont know if they can afford to bring it out globally on one exact date or something. and they surely dont want to delay a release-date.

appears they can't/won't commit to one either.

When you put together moneyhats(verizon) plus first generation hardware (LTE) and something so volatile (android) you get a huge mess.

Every day I dont hear anything about this phone it makes me want it less and less since there are other phones right now that are on gingerbread that will most likely get the upgrade to ICS in the future.

They'll release it when its ready. You think they would prefer releasing it before its ready then get 1000's of complaints from people that things are broken?

Actually, they do. They can wait and tell us whenever they choose. We're not entitled to receive any info from them prior to release.
Chill out. You'll get the phone soon enough. Geez.

They already have a release date for UK and Canada, plus a few other places, so it's READY! It's not so much that we want it today (that would be nice). We just want a freaking DATE! And I don't care about the VZW LTE model, make them wait if it's not ready. HSPA+ is ready to go!

Well its pretty clear that the release of the HSPA+ version to the US has something to do with the VZW model, whether it's Verizon having an exclusivity, or Google not wanting to release until Verizon has released as part of a contractual obligation, or something to that effect.
Its not wild to assume the VZW model is slightly behind in development from the HSPA+ version.
Look, I don't think its right either, and its clear that they could physically be able to launch the HSPA+ version in the US on Thursday morning, but something else may be holding it up.

The ATT version was rumored to have launched a couple of weeks ago (as per the ancient-looking leaked ATT docs)
Hopefully they'll all be out soon.
I don't understand why the companies can't tell us what phones and when they are going to come out.
I actually need this device for my work. I know I could get a touch 1, but with the 2 "rumored" to be out really soon, I figure I should wait. I don't have a problem waiting, but I would like some hard dates from these companies so I can actually plan and know.
Funny thing is, I'm with Tmobile right now, but their 3G is way too limited where I live now. Sprint, Verizon, and ATT are much better with their advertised 3G in my area. I have no probs switching, but who is gonna get it?
If this was just waiting for a toy, I could care less. But it will make my work at least 10 times more efficient with the use of all the features of this device.
Does anyone know a way to get a rock solid answer from these companies?

They get around to it when they get around to it, but there is an actual reason why it seems to take so long.
Although people like us knew about the Touch Pro2 and its design and specs very early on, and even though some Europeans are already using it, the truth is it still flies under the radar for the average consumer. The carriers and manufacturers like this, because they still have stock of the original Touch Pro, and if everyone knew the Touch Pro2's release was imminent, no one would finish buying up the Touch Pro 1s (IMO, there's still a segment that would want the TP1 over the TP2, but I think most carriers disagree with me and that's what really matters on a decision to announce and give solid dates) because they, like you, would wait for the TP2.
This isn't idle speculation on my part, the impulse to conceal the next model is a well-established business practice based on knowledge of the Osborne effect (although the origins may be semi-mythical, the effect does happen under the right circumstances).
Besides this, launching a device successfully is complicated. Announce a date and then have to delay it, then everyone gets pissed and the device/carrier gets a worse rep than if they don't announce but still end up with the same launch date. There's really very little upside to getting precise information out there as early as possible.

Its true that these service providers hide the arrival details of new models. But the fact that frustrates me more is these buggers change names of models - like Rhodium is called by at least 4 other names including Rhodium, MDA Vario V etc. Is it must to create confusion among consumers?
Why can't there be a single name for a product (or 2 names at the most - one Project name - like Rhodium and other Trade Name - like Touch Pro 2)??

AT&T to launch the Tilit 2 on October 6!!!!!

Finally the waiting is over

now the ATT bashing should calm down...when this release with 6.5 out of the box and only gsm with 3.5 jack then we gonna be see some envy look from tmobile and international versioin...worth the wait
It has not been confirmed whether the AT&T version has a 3.5mm jack or not. I can't believe that whoever took that spy picture didn't think of taking a picture of the bottom! This could have been cleared up a month ago!
The waiting won't be over until that device is in my grubby mitts With so many rumored dates already floating around its hard to get excited about this, even if it was posted on BGR.
Edit: Wait, the 18th? Is Sunday a typical day for device releases?

My question is whether the 2-year-contract price will be closer to Verizon ($200) or TMobile ($349)...
My question is, how soon til the HTC Leo will be offered by AT&T? I've been free of my contract since this past June and have been waiting for the Tilt 2, but after seeing the HTC Leo, I wish I could get a possible release date for that to see if it would be worth the wait. Well, judging by the TP2 (announced in Feb. 09' to launch on AT&T Oct. 09') I would say about 8-9 months after it is announced at the earliest. And that's if AT&T decides to subsidize it. Personally, I'm sticking with TP2 since I have already been waiting 8 months for it to come to AT&T.

I agree with AT&T's lack of effort to push anything that doesn't begin with the letter I and end with phone. However, the HTC Leo is further along, than the Touch Pro 2 is, when we first heard about it. There's already video of the phone being shown with WM 6.5, a gallery of pics, and detailed specs with a much better snapdragon processor. I've got to believe this phone could be available before Christmas, if not somewhere in Q1 2010. I just want to guard against purchasing the Tilt 2, which I've been waiting for the past 6 months, and all of a sudden 2 months later, this phone comes out- which clearly has much better specs all the way around.

Seeing as the HTC Leo hasn't hit the FCC yet (that we know of), it has next to 0% chance of being released this year in the US. At earliest I would guess early Spring 2010.
Who knows if AT&T will even release the Leo. Did you see how insanely fast that was? Almost nothing took longer than 1 second to open! Nearly everything was instant! After 3 years of the MSM7200, we can FINALLY have a decent processor. Windows Mobile will stop getting a bad rep due to the MSM7200 garbage 90% of the WinMo phones have been using.
I just talked to a few rep's in the Portland OR area and they are also saying mid October as a release for the "Tilt 2".
Release date same for entire US?
When ATT releases their phones, is the release date the same for the enitre US? The reason being is that I live in Hawaii and I don't know if that will affect the actual release date. I'd really like to know because when that day comes I'm going to be there first thing and I don't want to receive any blank stares.

Your best bet is to call your store once the date is official and find out what they say. My guess would be its nationwide.

Nodo - due out today or not?

Plenty of people had been postulating that Nodo would be released today, but I do vaguely recall seeing an article on Monday saying it would be out "next week".
Anyone got any ideas?
I'm still waiting/looking for my first update. I guess I don't need it if the new one comes out considering all previous patches are supposed to be rolled into it.
The rumors have all been for today, with the exception of one that said yesterday was the day. The only official word from MS has been "first two weeks of March," which means we still have 6 more days to wait until they end up being made into liars.
No specific date set yet officially. My advice is don't get excited until Microsoft officially announces it or people start getting it. Whichever comes first. I just can't see it coming out without an officially announcement first.
Let us hope for the sanity of some that it comes out today. What ever happened to patience is a virtue?
The official word was "early March" so it could be anytime between today and next week. No one really knows, the March 8th date was a rumour.
Given that device-specific 7389 ROMs have started to appear (HTC Mozart and Trophy at least) I get the feeling that something is imminent. Just how imminent is, of course, another matter....
I got the update thing today, dunno if it pre NoDo or NoDo, don't have any data cables at school :/

Still nothing here with Focus on At&t as of 10:17am EST
Using the HTC Euro update in the dev forum, gold card installed to O2 HD7 in UK, and first impressions are there are slight improvements overall, few extra animations and email flagging (unless i messed that before), copy & paste works well, haven't noticed that apps load any quicker.
More an overall polish than anything revolutionary - that'll come october!
Microsoft, if they're smart, should be aware of the March 8 rumour, and should publicly address it. "not true", "sort of true", "we're not sure". Even a "we're not sure when" would satisfy people, like myself. It at least would show they've got their finger on the pulse and have half a clue of what's going on.
And just like above, I want it for performance upgrades, I couldn't care less about copy/paste.

Okay now tell me if this is a lie:
"I will be home by 5." You leave work at the same time you normally do but there is an accident on your regular route. You get home at 5:27. Do you consider yourself a liar? Probably not.
Let us not get on Holy. A big problem I have with humanity on the net is we are all overly critical towards others because we are just a screen name.
Apple claimed there was no Death Grip and in order to throw smoke and mirrors at the loyal customers they announced at the beginning of July 2010 that they would be shipping white iPhone 4s at the end of July. Now that is a bold-faced lie. And even bolder since it happened during a damage-control P.R. spectacle.
So they said they would have an update in February and it is March. Your phone is not unuseable no matter what picture you try to paint. We sometimes get places late. We sometimes finish our work late.

Wishing Google and Verizon were a bit more communicative about updates

I like Android more than iphone but at least with iPhone you usually know some of the fixes that are in the works.
I don't know if a radio fix is coming with the next OTA update
I don't knonw when (if) I'll see an update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus - I'm pretty sure I will but who is to say 100% other than Verizon or Android - tons of rumors like the 4.04 update and the 4.05 update etc but nothing concrete.
I suppose I'm kind of *****in but I'm also pretty sure they could make ALL of their clients happier if they released SOME info. E.g. a radio fix is in the works... or we'll have 4.04 for Verizon customers within 2 months - anything is better than nothing even if they don't' go into tremendous specfics.
Just my opinion of course.

That would be fantastic. Even if it said this month - update coming in June - that would be better than me hoping I might find a rumor that might seem credible. Then I'd know where to get genuine news relating to my device on MY carrier.
I am a looong time nexus user and I dont wish this anymore because I know it wont happend. Google works this way.
The only more or less "sure" thing is that when they say that it will be released in a couple of week is because it is already deployed in most employees devices for a long test and it will in fact be released in 2-3 weeks.
Google works this way because they don't have a ETA for when things are complete.
That's like saying telling CyanogenMod that you want more communication between them and the users so that they can post a timeline on when RC1/RC2 will be complete etc.
Things are just done when they're done.

Because...when something goes wrong, and they do not make their timeline, people would throw a fit, even more than they do now.
As others have mentioned, expecting any sort of ETA is completely unreasonable.
But honestly, this whole upgrade experience has been pretty underwhelming for two reasons: lack of communication and very slow speed. The volume bug -- a completely show-stopping bug -- took two weeks for a fix. I highly doubt it would take Apple that long to issue a software fix for such a serious bug. Sorry to bring Apple into the discussion, but it's true.
Not to mention that it's taken Google FIVE months to get NFC to be fully functional...
At the end of the day, having relatively quick updates of stock Android will probably keep me with Nexus devices, but an advertised and guaranteed monthly status update? That would be a killer USP. The silence between 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 was absolutely terrible.

Yes it sounds great, but it would just make things worse.
People would be exponentially more angry if they gave progress reports and they didn't go where people wanted. They'd complain even more because they'd know it wasn't fixing the way they wanted it to be fixed. And as soon as they promise a timetable and are unable to deliver, all hell would break loose. Either that, or they give a timetable too far in the future to keep from hurting themselves, and people complain the timetable is too far out.
Google and Verizon aren't just sitting on their asses doing nothing. They're working. Its downright insulting saying that Google isn't working hard on these updates. Just be patient ffs.

Agreed. Also with Google (or the manufacturer doing updates) it has to be approved by the carrier UNLESS you're using the GSM model of Galaxy Nexus which is independent of any carrier.
This is from a news article I read yesterday,
“HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.
The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.
You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what’s going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn’t to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don’t have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile’s and HTC’s name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations.”

tl;dr it says that, the ROM that HTC made didn't meet T-Mobile's expectations and has to be fixed by HTC... then sent to T-Mobile to test the ROM equalizing MORE delay
I know OP has Verizon, but that's kind of your fault for using Verizon. We all know how it is when it comes to Verizon and keeping a tight control over their phones. I personally don't consider Galaxy Nexus (LTE) to be a "Nexus" device. It comes bloated with VZW apps, Verizon has to approve the update by Google, Factory images are no longer uploaded, etc.
Kind of off-topic but I'd love to see the idea of Google buying T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom (owners of T-Mobile USA) then we would never have to worry about carriers trying to keep a tight grip on their phones. Not to mention then tight integration between Google services such as Google Voice would be tightly integrated between the carrier and Google services. Just a dream of mines.
Oh lord. Not another 'The Verizon Nexus is not a Nexus device' comment.

But I'm not asking for an eta or timeline. Just something like "here's what we're doing this month, or even this quarter."

Yea, everyone knows true Nexus devices only come with half the storage space and only on less desirable carriers.

Ah, my bad
I'm gonna guess the OTA will come with the white 16 gig version on April 5th, and that the white Gnexs will come with 4.0.5 loaded. Just a hunch. The rumors have been early April, so on Thursday or that weekend is my guess.
Well, I don't know about everyone else, but my "fake" Nexus has had 4.0.4 for a long time now. I've seen 2 updates since I bought my Nexus (fairly early after release). Not EVERY update comes via OTA. The Nexus line has ALWAYS been like this. At any rate, my 3 month old "fake and unsupported" Nexus has already seen more updates than my Vibrant ever did.
As far as GSM users complaining over updates, shut up. Your phones didn't need the updates that Google implemented for the CDMA version. I don't want fixes for a phone that isn't mine. I don't want Google releasing something that isn't ready. Radio issues are up to Samsung and the carrier, not Google. Stop whining about Google. Stop thinking Google is the hold up. Google isn't the hold up. Samsung is the hold up. If you have a CDMA version, blame Samsung and Verizon. If you're GSM, place the blame where it largely belongs, on Samsung.
For some reason 80% of people on this forum seem to think that Nexus means that you get an update every month or something like that. Like we should be on 4.1.7 by now or something like that. It's the most insanely retarded community I think I've ever seen in my life.
As a member of the choir and a Verizon customer for12 years

and since when do you know about iphone updates before release? Apple is the most secretive tech company ever. They only comment on issues when they get really out of hand and media goes all over it (like the recent address book privacy issues or the better known antennagate).
iOS does have private betas though, which is kinda the equivalent of aosp for android in terms of release schedules. aosp 4.0.4 >>> 8 months >>> oem 4.0.4 updates

ICS update up in the air now?

Droid-Life just posted some new dates for the expected Ice Cream Sandwich update. Apparently HTC is now listing the DINC2 as being "To be determined (by the end of August). This doesn't sound very promising to me anymore. Not sure what may have changed but obviously something has.

Hopefully, the devs can figure out things even if this does not drop for us.
thats troubling...but given that it was previously promised and that all the sister/cousin phones (including the tbolt which was released earlier) are getting it, id say its still coming
(why even update the rhyme? no one got it, and the women that did dont care about gb/ics/whatever)
lame
although another take could be, its getting the update...but time frame is "tbd" but will be by the end of august regardless

One can hope that is for sure. However, with Verizon nothing surprises me as they like to cancel things at the last moment up to and including whole phones.
Yeah, the Thunderbolt and the Evo Design 4G both have our exact same chipset, so I don't see why it wouldn't be around June or so (once again, barring VZW's inane approval process).
EDIT: I think this is causing an unnecessary freakout. It's the Schedule that is TBD, not the update itself.
The majority of devices will receive upgrades in June and July 2012 and we expect to finish upgrades in August 2012 for all announced devices.
Our device has been announced by HTC and VZW as getting the upgrade. I'm willing to bet it's >90% done already by HTC, it's just a matter of when at this point.
/thread
Eh... not too worried. We will get it when we get it.
For the benefit of those in here, I am quoting my post from the OpenSense ROM thread:
nitsuj17 said:

my best guess is that "tbd" refers to when they actually will release, but "by the end of august" is the latest they will release it
wouldnt make sense to not release an update for a semi popular phone (or at least 10x popular as the rhyme) that is running the same chipset as so many of the other phones on that list

PLUS, and a huge plus, they said they will update it. I believe they should and would realize what a faux pas it will be if they now come out and say, you know what "We ain't gonna release it".
Plus, after scrutinizing the language used in the following sentences:
When will my device get the Android 4.0 upgrade?
The target timeline for announced devices is below. Because of partner and network testing, and approval processes for device updates, it can take up to 45 days for all carriers and countries to get the update after a rollout has begun.

It sounds to me that they are going to release ICS for the Dinc2. It is on the list of devices with a schedule of release dates... PLUS, a FAQ below says this:
What devices will not get Android 4.0?
We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0. These devices include the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and others.

Now, tell me how can you even think that the Dinc2 is not getting ICS when, (a) it is in the list of devices scheduled to get ICS some time back, (b) it is in the table of devices getting ICS and the corresponding timelines and (c) it is NOT in the list of devices specifically mentioned as not getting ICS?
So, verdict: Chill out man! Our phone is gonna get some ICS love!
Captain Obvious, over and out.

Not double posting. Just letting people get the relevant info as they probably wouldn't have expected the info to be in that other thread. Lemme know if I did something wrong! (hope not)
Verizon has a way of disappointing customers with last second decisions. I have been a customer of Verizon for over a decade so I have an idea of what I am talking about.
Of course, I hope for the best but they have a distinct way of stating things so that it can be left open for doubt. As the date for the release indicates. All other devices got a, very rare, 2 month expected date. Ours didn't. Which could easily lead to a "we are sorry but we have determined it would not be in our best interests to upgrade this device".

LOL! I wonder if they say "in our best interest"... That sounds like they are admitting that doing so will effect their profit margins
EDIT: Why would updating Rhyme make more sense than Dinc2. And why is it of higher priority than Dinc2 that it gets a more solid time frame???
EDIT 2: There is no way in hell they can pull off or even ATTEMPT to suggest that "sorry, we plan not to update the Dinc2. It is not capable of running ICS". Why? The Droid Incredible S is getting it in June/July!!! It is the same phone! With same processor, RAM, ROM etc. Probably a different radio (GSM versus CDMA).. So, I feel we better calm down and wait to see if HTC releases an official statement to clarify the ruckus...

You obviously don't understand Verizon. Please notice I did not say HTC. HTC is not the deciding factor here, Verizon is.

Well, that much is true, since I have been on Verizon for less than a year. Anyway, I am no dev, but it stands to reason that Kernels written for the IncS will (at least partly) work for Inc2. Excepting code meant for Radio etc., the rest of it should work for Inc2 as they are basically having the same hardware, right??
If so, and if Verizon screws me over (again, first DX2 and now this) then experienced devs may be able to pull code necessary for Camera from the Inc S's kernel and incorporate it into ours. Problem solved.

Perhaps, but take the time to read the threads and you will notice that all devs say they need source code to do it right. Notice they have not said the source code for the IncS.
Anyways, I'm not going to debate it with you anymore. Only time will tell if we get an actual ICS release or not.

That has never been in question as that is usually the only way some devices get updates. However, a released stock ROM will always help make things batter.
I have been with Verizon for 10 years about now. I always loved the service but over the last 2 years they are pissing me off. First they screwed over the droidx2. Then the unlimited data is going away and now the Dinc2 might not get what was told we would get. If verizon screws us again I am leaving to another carrier no matter what. I hate verizon at this point.
Definitely getting the feeling of the Eris all over again.

I honestly don't even see the point of updating this phone in august.....
I'm definitely jumping to Galaxy S III, never liked sense and probably never will, but that's my 2 cents.

Its always good to see updates for older phones....especially since going forward those of us with unlimited data (and want to keep it) can't use upgraded to get cheap phones
Sgs3 will probably fall after the cutoff, and unless I really save up won't get it....the vzw variant will most likely not be as popular as it would have been
