Backup assistant should be safe to remove, as well as the clock widget.
Pretty much any app that isn't the phone or contacts apk should be safe, too, I think.
(actual apps. Don't delete stuff like CertInstaller.apk or whatever. But if it shows up in your app drawer, it's generally okay to get rid of.)
The only thing I'm not sure about is the visual voicemail. It may act funny with the messages app, since there's a slider for it.
Cdrom.iso really shouldnt be removed. It can cause issues with adb and mounting usb storage. You can dissable the annoying vzw installer by dialing ##program# and hitting call. Enter six zeros for the password. Then go to feature settings and tap on cd rom and dissable it. Hit the menu button and select comit changes. Your phone will reboot and the vzw installer nag wont be there the next time you connect to your pc.

Delete from system/app with root explorer or uninstall/freeze with titanium backup.

Does it matter if I delete them vs. move the APKs to another location? Would I ever need them again for anything?
Well they'll still be taking up space if you move them to another location on the phone, but they wont run or be in your app drawer. If you want to have them just in case, you could always move them to the SD card, then your computer? I can't think of any reason that you'd need them though, even if you wanted them at a later time, you could find them on the market or with a quick googling.
I just back them up and then uninstall them.
I've added Apps (VCast.apk) to the list.

You might want to add HtcLoggers.apk to the list, in light of the recently discovered security hole.
DInc with CyanogenMod 6.1 & Invisiblek #28 kernel.
Hi,
I'm trying to lock Contacts and Phone app to memory.
So they will start faster. I don't want to wait for them to open. ( Sometimes it tooks a long time )
If is there anyother way to do it but locking it ( like keeping it alive, running in backgorund or something ) i can try.
This is really important for me. I need to make calls fast.
Thank you so much for reading.
Best Regards.

I did it using SuperCharger Update 9 RC 6.9 ( Option 17 in Driver's Console )
I bulletproofed Phone,Contacts and Messaging apks ( Sony's Original ones ) with this script.
Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021
Its BETA release probably.
Thank you for reading.
I researched some more and found this,
adb pull /init.rc
replace "setprop ro.HOME_APP_MEM ..." with:
setprop ro.HOME_APP_MEM 1536
adb push init.rc /sdcard/init.rc
adb shell
# mount -o remount,ro rootfs /
# cat /sdcard/init.rc | tee /init.rc
# mount -o remount,rw rootfs /
# rm /sdcard/init.rc
This code can lock Sense home to memory. Maybe someone with skill can change it for Contacts.apk ?
Use exDialer. It can be locked to memory, has smart search and looks like MIUI dialer.
It's a good solution.
But before i try those third-party contacts/phone apps i want to lock Sony's Original app to memory.
And i don't want to lock it with another app. I want to make lowmemorykiller see contacts app like system app and never touch it.
So, probably i need to use script or something. But it also should be permanent change, at least i don't want to do it after every reboot.
Thank you so much for answering

Exdialer will still SEMC phone to make calls. It's just an interface in between.
So locking THAT in memory won't help. Locking SEMCPhone is what you want for faster launches of the phone app.
The default dialer generally takes much time to start up. So suggested a 3rd party app for faster number dialing!
Sent from my LT15i using XDA
Exactly,
Exdialer is Contacts-like app. I need both of Contacts and SEMCPhone in memory.
If i won't find anything probably i will use ExDialer for Contacts app at least it will quicker to find Contacts.
But i also really need to lock SEMCPhone app to memory. That's the most important part. Because i can't use any third party app for this function. It have to be Sony's original ( im not sure btw )

3 - Run the script as root (DONT SELECT TO RUN ON STARTUP)
4 - bulletproof an app or something like this (option 17 in my version)

The logs show that the script is run on restart, but it says
com.sonyericsson.android.socialphonebook
com.sonyericsson.infiniteview
com.android.phone
isn't running, can't bulletproof.
It looks like its run a bit too early?
I tried running it with the widget, it found phone and socialphonebook running, but never infiniteview.
Even on exiting a contacts details by pressing home and starting the script immideatly, it always said infiniteview isn't running, it seems to instantly close itself.
After it told be it bulletproofed phone and socialphonebook, I went to start a few apps/games, closed them again and tried starting contacts and open a contacts details:
contacts opening time varied between 3 and 12 seconds
contact info opening time varied between 2 and 8 seconds
I am certainly not getting the effect I hoped bulletproofing would give me, I hoped the startup times would be like you just closed contacts and reopened them:
contacts opening time varied between 1 and 1.5 seconds
contact info opening time varied between 1 and 1.5 seconds
Don't expect your phone to keep Phone and contacts in memory when trying to play games. Our phones do not have enough RAM to keep all of these loaded in there at once. Android has to close something in order to free up RAM and run the current app/game.

A bit of advice for people who are having this problem - I've "been there, cut that", and have to say that the whole "bulletproof" script nonsense is nothing more than a waste of time; it just doesn't work. I've tried every "ram manager" out there, and the only thing that has got me the result is the "Xposed Framework trick" (ICS/Jellybean only unfortunately).

Thanks for the input, but I actually finally got a working solution (as I told the member above) and that is the Xposed Framework App Settings method. I've tried probably half a dozen applications over the course of the years of my ownership of this device, and so far, Xposed App Settings has been the only thing that has had any effect. The only negative is that it does require ICS or Jellybean to install.
Spread the word, and good luck to everyone experiencing this issue.

Thank you so much for this hint, finally something that works :cyclops:
I changed
Contacts (com.sonyericsson.android.socialphonebook)
Infiniteview (com.sonyericsson.infiniteview)
Keypad (com.android.phone)
to resident and they actually stay in memory, even after starting games (not sure if keypad is needed, it isn't listed under running apps).
Infiniteview startup went from 3-7seconds to 0.5-1.5
Contacts behave strange:
If I exit contacts by pressing home key, they start in under 1 second (Android Core Apps are listed under its subprocesses)
if I exit contacts by back key, they need 3 seconds to start (just SmartSearchCachingService and Contacts itself under processes)
I seem to not be able to lock down android.process.acore with the xposed framework

Perhaps you should activate them yourself, on your fb groups you should visit the group and turn on notifications to get them, for IM you game messenger perhaps (no problem there I think?)
You can also check the refresh interval @settings on your Facebook app if it is high then you won't get notifications so often.

where to check - within the app or within FB itself?
This is an Android issue....the only way I solved it myself was get access to a blackberry (yeah I know) or the virtual Blackberry software for windows.
Once logged in to Facebook log straight back out, you only need it for a minute, then go to Facebook on a PC, account settings and then apps I believe, in there somewhere will be Facebook for Blackberry, allow this access and that's it!
Its a bit fiddly but it solved it for me!
If you Google the right thing you will find a step by step guide, sorry I did this a year ago, so its all from memory :-\

I can confirm this. When I was still using my Galaxy S2 and lacked notifications for Facebook, I used the virtual blackberry software for windows from the RIM site, and logged in on facebook with that to fix the problem. It's been mentioned a few times before.
this is an well-known issue and affecting majority of Android devices, there are two workarounds

2. try the Blackberry FB tricks here:

I really rely on Facebook contacts sync as it has pretty much all the numbers i need. I know there are apps like Friendcaster and Haxsync but those do not sync the numbers with the profiles. My GNex is running stock 4.1 right now and it is rooted I believe, since i rooted it myself last night (i think i did it right). Is there something that will allow me to Facebook Sync my contacts and still keep the standard OS without noticing anything changed. Or i guess in other words, how can i quickly enable it so that it can sync and then delete whatever i put to enable it to do that so that I am back at square one just this time with all my contacts I would backup and put on my computer. Using a standard GSM Gnex on the latest Jellybean update, I hope I was descriptive as possible. Also I am a noob so please don't go too crazy on me, I've never actually done any of this stuff but i just want my contacts so i can use the stock until im comfortable doing more of this

I don't think you guys are understanding what I am saying lol, I understand these apps give you the contacts. This is what I want yes, but what they lack is adding the contacts WITH the phone NUMBERS. I want the the phone numbers. Exactly. I want numbers too. I have like 5 people synced to my Google account. The rest are on Facebook. Friend caster only syncs them to my "people" app. If I go to the phone app the numbers aren't there. When I open the menu and select "choose contacts to display" I select friend caster and it says 0 contacts. Looking for contacts phone numbers not just names and HD photos...

Custom ROMs usually have Facebook sync working fine, you could also search how to modify a stock google image to allow facebook sync, if I'm not mistaken you'll need root and busybox, you will need to edit a text file and run a script that will update a database in your phone... Unfortunately I don't have this information handy, so, you'll need to search for it if you want to modify stock rom (remember, you need root), or, you can always use custom roms that do not have this limitation.

You tried to export them? There must be a way once you do get the contacts synced to save them into the phone and not just under the synced profile that way you can export them. I tried to export them off my other phone running gingerbread and put them onto my Gnex but it was a no-go the file i extracted had 0 bytes for some reason it just didn't want to export the contacts at all.. Was hoping it was still possible but I suppose its not

Hey guys, haven't found a thread about this yet (sorry if there is one!)
Really not a noob, but...
Really mega noob question here regarding notifications for the HOX and android in general?
I've noticed if I end the task in task manager I no longer get the notifications, I.e facebook, whatsapp etc, is this normal? Or should the apps receive notifications anyway? I've tried many things and always seem to lead that they work when not ended in task manager, so there still running tiny proccesses, is this right?
Really confusing and when I get something on my mind, I don't rest till I find out haha
Sent from my HTC One X
If you've killed it in Task Manager the app is in effect closed so notifications won't work. Leave it running and just close it in 'Recent apps' and you're good to go (at least that's my take on it, could be wrong)

Only reason I said that was I 'killed' AudioGuru once and it didn't change profiles until I ran it again and then it carried on as normal
According to Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM older method) ,and Google Cloud Messaging for Android (GCM new method) documentation, the application does not need to be running in order receive push notifications.

I can verify that.
Strange that it stopped my notifications if I used Task Manager as well in that case...having said that, the app was a process to control the phone, not a notification so (as I said) I could be wrong
Maybe I was just having problems earlier then. Not really sure. Thanks for all your comments!

yeah but this is for applications that use push of course.
i guess the difference here is that some applications don't use push, so when terminated, aren't open any longer to do the background server connect/check, whereas with push obviously the app doesn't check by itself, so no need to be running...

That's pretty much what I should've said in my first reply!
But I'm pretty sure whatsapp and facebook use either c2dm or gcma.
GCM actually commercial name of C2DM, and newer version.. its compatible with from froyo/gingerbread, though..
The hecks from facebook, whatapps, line doesn't used GCM, that why they need to runnnig own push service. yeah, multiple polling services may impact some battery usage..
I always reckon GCM is better than their own push service.. GCM is running as a service too, but it is highly optimized. That's why you are able to install/uninstall app from web browser. If all these apps use GCM, then we will have only one push service running behind and invoke the app if any imcomings..
Anyone who are interested may go youtube the GCM session on Google I/O.

+1 I wish everyone used this instead of the other sync method.
Facebook at least (don't know about whats app) is complete crap... its got better though, but wouldn't surprise me if it was just their own implementation of push that is full of bugs

Thanks again for your comments people, so what you're saying is, I'm best.. atm to just not use task manager? Just end the tasks in recent apps?
Sorry, it's just difficult to see whether it's worth just leaving them running in the back ground on task manager. Are these the push notification programs were on about? There like kb, so I presume they just receive notifications?
Thanks for your replies

Task Manager is more towards cached apps. Perhaps you should look under Settings >> Apps for the service mentioned. Kill them there, however some of them will be restart if you open the app later.
In faux kernel op hey stats usein task killer didn't gain any speed of the phone just creates force close and crashes

Are you sure about that ? According to whatsapp changelog they have C2DM support, and the android manifest file of Facebook app has com.google.android.c2dm.permission.RECEIVE permission granted to it.

You dont need to kill tasks, unless they are really badly written, if that's the case, uninstall it.
When an app is backgrounded, it should save its state and idle. When Android runs out of memory, it can unload tasks. Why do you want to kill 'em all?
The notifications and end all function of the One X certainly works differently than it does on my GS3.
On the One X it will even stop my weather widgets from updating if I close all programs. My GS3 actually re-starts important apps.
Just a difference I've noticed between the two. I never use end all apps function on the One X after that -- just let it manage itself.
