N1 user here, but running Desire ROM. I've noticed that ever since Paul's released alpha17--which unlike his earlier builds is based on the Desire's release candidate--there's no longer Launcher2.apk. I can clear HTC Sense's defaults and press home, but... no option to pick Launcher2. Launcher2.apk doesn't exist in the ROM. Gone. Nada. Killed in action.
Obviously, as someone who's got root and can adb push Launcher2.apk from elsewhere, this isn't an issue for me. But if the Desire also lacks Launcher2, it means you guys (until it's rooted) can't switch to vanilla Android if the fancy takes you, which is weird. So, can any of you please check if you have got Launcher2 or not?
I want to root lol.
Have you tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645550?
Download the zip file. Extract the launcher.apk to your sd card. Browse to the file (for example use astro) and install it. Be sure to have checked the box "Allowing unkown software installation" (or something like that).
Does this work? Shouldnt need root access.
No, no. See, I don't need Launcher2 myself and even if I did, I can manually install it. It's just that I was led to believe that the Desire itself will retain Launcher2 and switching from vanilla Android to Sense would be no different from switching between home replacements (which was the case in earlier Desire alphas).
Ah ok, I see. Misunderstood your problem. I believe that we need definitely root for the Desire, this would fix many problems...
Launcher2 can be installed without root-access, so this is no problem. You just can't push it to the /system/app folder. You can still install it, and thereby placing it in /data/app.
It makes perfectly sense that HTC removed the Launcher2.apk from the release ROM, as this is a phone with HTCs own Sense UI.
I do agree that root-access is needed, but not for this incident.
using the desire there is an option to disable Sense UI, and you will end-up with a N1 experience.
Programs > Unknown Sources > HTC Sense > Controls > choose stop and select "launcher" .... and thats it
A quick question: When you use Launcher2 instead of Sense, can you still pinch to see all the pages?
Nope. You lose the ability to pinch and all HTC widgets.
Thanks.
And Sense can't work in landscape mode, right?
(and the HTC music player also?)

Wrong! there is no Launcher app to replace Sense, so it just automatically jumps back to default.

That doesn't work now when i try it on mine it just kicks back in using htc sense.
Guess Paul didn't take out Launcher2 from his ROM for giggles, then. I wonder if you could just install Launcher2.apk extracted from an N1 ROM normally. Probably you could.

Me and everyone else with a released desire in that case, as also mentioned it was removed in some of the leaked ROM's previous too.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but launcher2 is not in the official latest desire rom.
This does not have anything to do with T-mobile.
I have seen a lot of desire phone's and none of them have the launcher2.apk.
(at least on the dutch market that is )
why don't you just install it like I did. better still install helix launcher from the market. same as launcher2 but allows placement of 4 icons level with the draw which will appear on every page

I've tried launcher apk but it doesn't add the zooming animation that you get when you open an animation like on the nexus one. I really want that animation!
Hi there!
I've written a FAQ with Android tips & tricks and tweaks that I try to keep updated, and when I made an attempt to turn off HTC Sense on my Desire the other day in order to get the default Android homescreen, the old method didn't work.
Clearing the defaults for HTC Sense had no effect, and Home wasn't even listed in the application manager.
Is there another way? Perhaps Sense on Android 2.1 devices goes so deep that there isn't even a vanilla Android below it anymore?
Thanks
When you say "no longer possible" are you saying you were able to do this before? From what I know Launcher2, the default 2.1 app launcher, is not installed so you have to find the apk somewhere and install that first.
When the reviewers were first getting hold of Desire's I think there was a video of someone turning off Sense and running stock Android. It was a really simple process too, from what I remember.
When the phone was officially released people noticed you couldn't do this any more.
I think that's what the OP is referring to.
HTC removed the standard Home before they shipped the Desire, so it's never been possible on post-release handsets. It was an option on pre-release phones, though, so people got videos out showing how to do it, and then no dice...
You can install HelixLauncher 2 or 1, which will give you similar homes. I'm not sure if the regular Launcher2.apk will install - I seem to remember trying it and failing. Don't recall for sure, though.
not again lol....well this has been discussed before again and again, the retail version's sense ui cannot be turned off...
Well, it can if you install a different home replacement and clear Sense's defaults.
You can install Launcher2.apk you should be able to find it in some other threads
(use the search?). I had no problems installing it.
Then do the 'clear defaults' setting on the Sense UI application, press 'home' and it will ask you which home screen you want to use.
Better still, install the Helix Launcher 2 from the Market. I prefer it because of the ability to insert 4 static shortcuts alongside the menu button where the space was just previously wasted.
Anybody get Google Car Dock working with Virtuous Unity ?
When I insert my phone in the dock this stupid HTC Navigation automatically launches asking me to buy. I've installed com.google.android.carhome-1.apk as well as carpanel.apk but, alas, no joy.
On the stock ROM, I installed the same apk and when inserting the phone into the car dock the first time was asked what app I wanted to use and "Car Home" was listed. I can't find the stupid HTC Navigation anywhere to remove it or at least clear the defaults.
Even if I can't get Google Car Dock working, how in Gods name can I get this plague, that is HTC Navigation, off my phone? I tried freezing, moving, deleting, uninstalling any and everything from /data/app and /system/app that closely resembled the HTC Navigation. Yet, when I insert my phone into the car dock, low and behold, up pops HTC Navigation asking me to buy maps. This thing is like herpes -it just doesn't go away. Whats even more odd -when I hit the Car Home icon (the google one with a little "g") the HTC Navigation launches!! I'm losing my marbles over here!!
Thanks in advance.
Thanks

haha hey man, glad you got root goin, I will take a look at those files to see if I can find what you need to delete. The reason the stock .apks do not work is because those for 2.1 and Virtuous is a 3.0 rom. so you need 3.0 .apks.. try out this rom here its based off the stock rom with sense 3.0 goodies, might help you out. it's a great rom and will only get better.

Thanks (again) Bro! I managed to sort myself out. After backing up Virtuous with clockwork, I installed CM7, then used TiBackup on Car Home.
Once I restored Virtuous, I restored Car Home with Ti Backup and it works like a charm. I also found I could get HTC Navigation to stop opening by checking the little box in Settings > Dock > "Automatically Start Navigation" (DUH!!).
All is right with the world now, except Car Home doesn't launch automagically when I put my phone in the dock but I can most certainly live with that.
Cheers!
EDIT: I will give that ROM you suggested a try. Thanks!
Hi everyone.
I´m comming from a HTC HD2 with "Energy Rom" (Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.5), now i got my HTC One X for six days (and yesterday rooting and changing to Rom "Android Revolution HD 5.2.0").
After last six days of testing, it is still an amazing device, but there are lots of bad things that have to be said about the HOX:
1) --> The HOX is not smooth!
The HOX has the most powerful CPU on earth, but still it is not able to run realy smoot. Compared to the iPhone, the home screen doesn't rotate realy smoot, the app-drawer matrix doesn't scroll smooth, and worst of all the scrolling through Pictures lags.
2) --> The HOX is not that intuitive as it should be.
First example - the music player:
When you click on music-player, then first button "my phone" (in german "Eigenes Telefon"), you can click on top the pull-down-menu to change to "genres". Now you click on "Rap" and want to choose the Artist --> but there is no artist! Not even the artists name is mentioned. You only can choose the album-name.
When you pump up 20 Gbyte music, it is not realy possible to easily choose the song you whant to hear.
Second example - the ringtone:
Nomaly you choose the ringtone in "settings --> sound". But e.g. the sms tone must be changed in "sms --> menu --> settings --> notification --> notification ringtone".
Why so complicated?
3) --> The USB Connection to the internal storage is slow.
On my HTC HD2 i used a Class 10 SD-Card. Writing movies or navigation-maps on it, after taking the card out of the device, had a writing speed at about 10 MB/s.
When i read about the internal storage, i thought it is at least as fast as a good SD-Card. But when i connect my HOX via USB i get max. 5 - 6 MB/s.
4) --> The HTC car app does not launch with connecting a bluetooth-device.
With Sense 3.5 you can set the "old" HTC car app to launch when a bluetooth-device connects - this means: every bluetooth-device! So when starting the engine, my car-radio connects to the HTC, the old app starts immediatly.
The new HTC car app looks realy great, but it doesn't start when the radio connects.
And as if this were not enough: the new car app can not rotate to portrait-mode.
Why?
5) --> Lockscreen-Links can not be defined independently.
With Sense 3.5 the lockscreen-app-links can be set as you whant.
With Sense 4 the links can not been changed. They are the same as the links in the dock bar.
Why?
6) --> Homescreen can not rotate around.
I find it realy disturbing that the homescreen can not scroll over from far right to far left.
So guys, I hope you comment these things or give hints or tips.
Best regards,
Nem.
I agree with 1,3,5 and 6
Hopefully they all can be fixed with a software update

Depends on which ROM you're running I guess. The home screen doesn't rotate by default in sense so...
In the end I've never had a lagless computer, but the One X is snappy enough for me...

This is something I don't like either. Honestly, when I bought the phone a pulled a bone head move and hadn't realized there was no SD card... just before paying I realized, and figured I'd give it a go... consider the battery life and lack of micro SD AND USB OTG, I'm a bit miffed about my decision, but still happy enough to stick with it for a while. After all, the Galaxy S3 isn't out yet and ugly as hell.

This seems like an issue with HTC Sense, more than the One X. You might try some non stock apps... if you want a ready made package, you should probably just get an apple product... This is probable something which could be solved by reporting to the proper developers, or by getting the right apps installed on your device.

Realize, this isn't a support forum, but a hobbyist developer forum. If you want Support, go to the developer of the product you want. If you want help, this is the place.
As for the quick links, i believe they did what most people would do assume the "quick links" you have on your home screen and the ones your most likely to use.
also my phone has always been smooth as butter even on stock ROM.

1. Pretty smooth with me, and this will improve. It's a brand new phone, and htc's always seem to be like this early on.
2. For me it's logical. If I want to change my sms alert, I would go into sms settings. I don't really changed my alerts, but that's the way I'd do it.
With the music app, I use Google music which is easy for finding what you want to listen to. I usually use playlists, and I never use genres, as I listen to what I would class as hard rock. Depending on the band its genre could be classed as anything from rock to metal to punk to progressive rock to grunge to alt rock and another 10 or so permutations
3. Transfer could definitely be faster, but I don't do that much transfering so it's not a huge deal for me. I would transfer across the odd movie or rom, and it doesn't take long.
4. Don't use the car app.
5. I guess they just used the logic that the programs on your dock bar would be the ones you access most often. It makes sense to me, but it wouldn't be too much effort for them to give people the choice.
6. Homescreen rotates on custom ROM, guess it was only designed to be used when the phone is docked? If you mean the carousel effect, this was ditched for sense 4.0. Guess it's part of slimming sense down. As always, some people love it, others want it how it was.
You've got valid points, but some of them are just getting used the slightly different way of doing things.

The music problem is easy fixed by using Mixzing or PowerAMP.

This also applies to the Locations built in mapping software sadly (no portrait mode).
I'm guessing they are trying to push it along with their car dock as a 'package', which holds the phone in landscape mode, but I don't want to pay out on a dock that will likely not fit my next phone, even if it is an HTC. I have a perfectly good universal holder securely fitted in my van which will fit any phone I own thanks.
Not sure how many if any ever used the paid Locations App, but it is handy to have the maps on phone if you have no data connection.
Fortunately, CoPilot now offers a freemium option that lets you download the maps and only pay if you want turn by turn.
I think HTC has tried to simplify Sense because of previous criticisms from 'reviewers' and have probably gone too far the opposite way.
Several of the things like carousel, dock icons, etc. they could have made simple to start with, then added the option to tweak it in the settings. Maybe they will go back the other way in a later version, or modders on here will work out how to do it for them, as usual.
Although I've always used other launchers in the past, I quite like the Sense 4 launcher, mainly because of some of the widgets. However, I will NEVER understand why they went with a 4 x 4 grid on such a massive screen - its such a waste of space.
The only reasoning I can think is that they wanted it to be the same across the whole One series, including the One V, but that's really not a good enough reason to limit your flagship device HTC!

Mine is and I have 80 some apps loaded on it. The only stutter I've noticed is in the secondary weather animations. Read this. It's a Google engineer explaining how Android renders graphics. Power can't overcome some of the limitations she describes. The answer to an iPhone comparison can only be "perhaps you should have gotten an iPhone?" The One X is smoother than any of the six modern (as opposed to a hacked three year old Windows phone running Android) phones I’ve owned in the past two years.

This is my first time using Sense since it was called Manila. I've used Samsung devices prior to the One X. I find the work HTC's done in Sense 4.0 to be pretty amazing. Like rejecting a call with a message automatically adds a task to return the call to your calendar so it’s available at your desk. To me, it's probably the most intuitive and well thought out interface available on an Android phone. Again, if you want intuitive, get an iPhone. Samsung and Motorola's devices are less, not more intuitive.

No, it doesn't. But when docked a cleaner easier to use replacement's provided.
So far these are the things that I've found that I'd like changed and I think they'd impact more people and are more material than the home screen not rotating.
1) No ICS Native Voice Dialer - HTC left it out and all the ICS compatible APK's I’ve found crash. Vlingo is the only way to initiate voice calls over BT and it's far from a clean solution.
2) No LinkedIn Connector for Sense - It worked on earlier versions of Sense but not 4.0. It's a pretty big omission for people that use their phone for business.
3) No Resizing of HTML E-Mail - The stock mail app should be able to allow pinch-to-zoom to adjust the size of HTML e-mail. As it is, you have to scroll.
There’s a lot of niggly things that I’d prefer be implement differently but I’d never post them on a forum because what’s important to me may not be important to others. We each use our phones differently. One device, no matter who makes it, is going to please everyone equally.

Hi everybody,
thanks a lot to all of you for your postings.
I just wanted to start the discussion, because when you read tests or comments about the HOX, then you most read something about the "first impressions". Magazines, blogs etc. often compare the HOX with the most popular smartphone: the iPhone. Then you may also read something about "THE IPHONE KILLER". I hate phrases like this! Why do I have to kill something that is behind me ?
I just wanted to say, that even the HOX has potential to get better - and thats why I installed the ARHD-ROM
I just wanted to post my opinion to the HOX as objectively as i can be. Don´t missundersand me: for me, today the HOX is the best phone on earth. Never wanted to have an iPhone. I just waited for the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and on the same Day I decided to buy the HOX.
1- The famous problem with Rosie.apk and the layered widgets, the OnDemand governor of the one X doesn't Ramp CPUs speed to full unless pushed hard and so in the launcher the CPUs are not to blame, neither the GPU since its linked to CPU clocks, the launcher is simply running at low clocks plus heavy layering in the widgets and hence the stutter, solution to this is actually optimizing the sense launcher and this is where ultra rosie mod fixes it
Topic on the issue, please vote since im already in contact with HTC:

6- well its a Sense 4 simplification decision and i quit like it, you either get scrolling wallpaper or frozen wallpaper plus loop, both are actually easy control if you hack rosie.apk

Doing that though, you loose the usage of Sense widgets?
The whole point of having a htc phone is to enjoy using htc widgets, isn't?
EDIT: This thread has gone dead, updated the title as it also applies to the most recent version of the ROM. Still looking for answers on the questions in bold format. Especially the last one - about the radio version, as the rest really is about features in the ROM. Thanks!
Hi,
This is my first post in these forums, so I hope you'll bare with me. I am trying to stick to the rules, and have searched a lot for answers, but still have some questions. I really appreciate this forum, and I can thank you for my phone not being totally outdated (Thanks HTC...)
First of all I want to say thank you for a great ROM! I can't post in the official thread just yet, but hopefully I will get there soon.
I have a few issues/questions/suggestions though:
- Both in v.6, 6.5 and 7 I get an error when enabling notifications in facebook. After a minute or so I get a notification that fb notifications have been disabled because my phone doesn't support push-messages. But I'm sure it does, cause I get push notifications from other apps. Without this function the fb app loses half of its value. Solved
- My phone automatically reboots when I try to access soundhound from within the fm-radio, is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix?
- I've seen this posted before, but have yet to find an answer. Although enabling arrow keys for the keyboard this will only enable them on the English keyboard. Could you please be so kind and add this option for the other languages as well? Would be great if you could just choose "enable arrow keys", and this would then be on all keyboards.
- It would be great being able to zoom in/out in the camera appwith the volume buttons. This used to be standard in the official ROMs.
- I saw someone in the official thread saying that you could pull down the notification bar when the phone is locked. I actually had it the same way, but just now found out that there wasn't actually a real screen lock enabled. Yes, I got the pattern screen every time I unlocked the phone, but then realized any pattern would be accepted. When I configured a new screen lock in the settings it was no longer possible to pull down the notification bar when locked =)
- Is it okay to batch restore all apps and system settings in Titanium backup when you upgrade to a new version of the same ROM, or do I have to do each one manually? I'm not sure exactly what all the 200+ items change, so it's kind of hard selecting them. Any tips&tricks on this would be much appreciated (Links etc. too).
FYI: I am using a Desire HD, full wiped and installed the ROM, but am using RADIO 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M. The reason I never changed this is because I didn't experience most of the issues others were describing in the official thread. Could any of my problems be caused by this? And would there be any huge advantages to changing Radio? Also - and this might be a stupid question, but please forgive me as I am really new to this stuff - Is the BeastMode Kernel automatically flashed with the ROM?
Thanks in advance!
I have had some of the problems you have listed above and it's all down to restoring via Tibackup (I learnt the hard way!)
I just checked mine and I can pull down the notification bar when locked, so it does work (I have a lock screen pattern enabled). Unfortunately when doing a batch restore it messes up the phone's ID in some way, so fb thinks your phone isn't a DHD and hence cannot handle push notifications. You may even find if youlog into google play on a pc that it says 'device not found' or 'incompatible device' when looking to install apps.
Right, this is what you need to do.
1. Do a full backup via Tibackup
2. Boot into recovery and execute factory reset
3, Install Sabsa Prime 7 (perform full wipe)
4. install TiBackup
5. Restore all app and data (NOT system data) - this can be a batch restore
6. Select backup/restore (middle tab) and from the list, restore contacts, messages, people, dialer storage (most of the ones highlighted in green).Remember data only.
Now you will have all your apps restored and your latest contacts and messages. You can also restore bluetooth pairings, wifi and even settings.
You will need to set your homescreens again but everything should now work.
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated
I really don't care much about whether I can pull down the notification bar when locked, or not. I just noticed I could do it until I changed the lock screen pattern.
Thanks a lot for your detailed advice on the other stuff! I'll definitely try it when I have a little more time to spare.
I still wonder about the arrow keys though, because they are only on the English keyboard (I'm pretty sure it was that way even before I restored apps and settings). And of course being able to zoom with the volume keys would be great.
This might be a noobie question, but is "2. Boot into recovery and execute factory reset" really necessary? What's the difference between this and a full wipe?
2. Probably isn't necessary, but it's a habit of mine before installing a rom as early versions of Sabsa Prime didn't have the option in installer, infact there was no installer!
As for the arrows, download SwiftKey keyboard, best keyboard I've seen, has many languages and arrow option.

bluetooth issue
hi i install the sabsa prime rom v7 but i have a issue whit the bluetooth, my bletooth device is a sonyericsson mw 600, i can connect and the music sound for the bluetooth but the audio of the calls don't sound for that , but the call controls in the bluetooth work's fine, if could tell me how i can fix that i wil be so grateful.
sorry my bad english
thank's to all
Ok, cool. Thanks bob!
Tried Swiftkey (and Go and some other wellknown keyboard) a while back. Like the keyboard, but the auto-correct for Norwegian was really poor. The standard keyboard has by far the best recognition of words that I have experienced.
EDIT:
Followed your instructions when flashing the new v8.5, and it has fixed the issues I experienced with fb =)
But the phone still reboots when I try to use soundhound from within the fm radio-app (but not with another radio, like the TuneIn Radio)...
Would love an answer regarding the Radio-version too (Never mind the question about the Kernel, figured that one out).
Shouldn't it be pretty easy to include the arrows for all languages, not only for the English keyboard? This is a function I really miss badly, makes things so much easier..
@Jaune: Sorry, I have no idea..
Still in v.9 the arrow keys only work for the English keyboard. Is there any way to implement this also for other languages?
And I see everyone is talking about a camera 4.2 - search xda. Well, I have searched and searched and can't seem to find it..
Found this though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867966.
Any thoughts on using this with Sabsa Prime v.9?
