Pop3 Inbox - messages getting deleted

I have a PDA2K and am being driven mad by my inbox getting emptied.
I have my home pc outlook express set on leave a copy of messages on server.
When I receive an email on the imate it goes into my inbox - great
When I look at mail on my home pc - it also goes into my inbox - great
When I next do a send & receive on the imate it removes the email I have received on the pc from the imate inbox
Is this normal?
Can I keep my Imate inbox intact and delete only what I want to?
Apols if this has been covered before - I have searched but am going crazy

half the problem is sorted
I discovered that I was not leaving a copy of my messages on my email server because I had 2 outlook express accounts going for the same mail and only one was configured to leave a copy on the server
However I would still like to know if it is possible to keep my Imate inbox intact (& under my control) even when the messages are no longer on my pop3 server

Is there not a tick box in Pocket Outlook on your iMate that chooses whether email is deleted on PC? In email account settings or something like that.....Don't have my 2i with me so not entirely sure, but think it right. :?

On Server
what email provider do you use? I'm use gmail, and "leave downloaded email on server" option is on email setting. You should log on on your email account and go to setting, search for "leave downloaded email on server", thick on it. :wink:

Yes I have set the server to leave a copy - however after around 3 months they will be deleted when my mailbox gets full. I presume they will then be deleted off my I-mate. What I want is a way to permantantly store them in my Inbox unless I manually delete them.

It sounds like exactly the same issue I have.
I have one PC where I download my emails to - which deletes off server once downloaded. This is fine.
Though on my XDA2i when I go to the POP3 account in messaging I can see all my emails - but when I attempt a send/receive, it deletes all previous emails from the inbox and donwloads any new if there are any.
It is like it is synchronizing the inboxes of what is on server. This should not be the case - I would expect this behaviour if it was setup to be IMAP , but not POP3.

I agree nsm - it behaves differently to other Pop3 accounts - I wonder if there is a way to send the inbox to SD storage and protect it that way.

The whole lot went again today when I set up a pop3 a/c on a new pc at work and forgot to leave a copy of messages on server
The only (in-elegant) way round this I have found is to create a new folder on my Imate called inbox copy and manually copy the important messages over as they arrive.
Surely there must be an easier way

I am facing the exact same problem as u guys... moment I download the entire mail... Even aster I check the leave a copy on the server checkbox. Is there a way to keep the mails?

In messages/inbox on your Blue Angel, tap accounts and then accounts again.
Tap the Storage tab at the bottom of the screen
make sure that delete items is set to manual. Otherwise the emails are deleted automatically when it sees that they are no longer on the server.
Also, try setting the email account to show all messages, and not just from the last x days (in advanced settings for each account)
It's usually these two that cause this.

have you tried...
setting "receive message headers only" on the handheld? This works fine for me...

Email auto delete?

I have searched, but can't find an obvious solution to this yet.
When downloading emails to the TP2, I continually get a problem. I receive part of the mail (first 5k for example), then click to download rest of the mail and click send & receive on the inbox again. The TP2 then sees the email as 'read' and deletes it - before I have chance to see the remainder of the mail.
Is there a setting somewhere to prevent this auto-delete (at least until I've read it!)?

The reason the mail gets deleted is probably because you have set up your email account as POP3 account. If you use IMAP, you won't have this problem...

Is it possible to change an email account from POP3 to IMAP? I always assumed that was down to the ISP to determine the type of account?
Or are you suggesting I find an alternative provider?

It doesn't matter whether it's a POP or IMAP account - it shouldn't auto-delete messages.
I had 3 accounts set up at POP3 and all was fine - I leave the setting to keep them on the server when deleting them off the phone so I can still download the messages when logging on at home with my computer.
However, since a hard reset to sort a few other problems I've been experiencing this 'auto-delete' phenomenom - I get an mail and read it WITHOUT deleting it yet next time I look the message has gone - it's not even in the 'deleted' folder.

You can also set your account to download the full message. Maybe you have set your setting to download the first 5k. It can be done by the advanced setting of your account.

I'm glad its not just me!
I have it set to only download the first 5k, and then it works OK - until I get mails smaller than this or try to download the rest of the message - at which point it deletes them off the device AND the server - before I've read them.

I had all accounts set to download the whole message and attachements and to leave them on the server when deleted - yet they were auto deleting off the phone and from the server.
I have now set them as IMAP, but have to remember not to delete them off the phone before getting them downloaded onto my PC - not ideal!

I can read my email before it is deleted but the mail in the inbox mail disappears and doesn't show up in deleted folder (as mentioned above). I have my Tilt2 set to leave mail on the server so I can get the same mail on my desktop computer. I assume that the mail "disappears" from the phone inbox when it goes off the server to my desktop.
My "fix" is to move anything I want to keep on my phone to a "Save" folder. Yes it is a PITA but at least for some important stuff, it remains on the phone til I want it deleted.

Why doesn't whole message download
I have set my email accounts to download the Whole Message and all attachments. However, when I log on I get the message header only and a comment that the whole message will be downloaded next time I logon. I have to come out of the account, logon again and select "Send/Receive" A bit irritating. Is this normal?

Messages deleted on computer still arrive on Desire?

Sorry to be dim, but I assume I need to change a setting, somewhere. Can anyone please tell me how I can stop messages I have deleted on my desktop popping up on my Desire five, or even ten, minutes later?

I'm guessing you are talking about emails here? if so, it depends on what type of account you have setup, eg. POP or IMAP.
POP will download each and every message to all mail clients (desktop and phone), unless you have either selected the option to 'delete messages on server' or manually go into the main mailbox and delete the message from there.
IMAP (if your mailbox supports it) is the best option if you view your messages using multiple devices- it keeps all the messages sync'd with each other.

If you're using Exchange then you may find you have cached exchange mode enabled which would cause a delay in the message being deleted from the server.
The option in Outlook 2007 would be found in :-
Tools > Account Settings
Select Exchange account and click change, there will be a check box that will allow you to enable\disable

i've got my own beautiful desire.
wonderfuk thing, but i've got a problem.
i've got 3 email accounts from hotmail and 1 gmail in my phone.
it all works great, and i like it very much.
except for 1 thing, if a delete a message on the server, my phone still saves it.
i want it so sync and delete the messages that are removed from the server.
i check my mail during the day with my phone, at night i check it on my laptop.
there are often emails in my inbox that are rubish, so i delete them.
usually i do this at night (don't know why, but i just like to do my paperwork at night).
so when i want to check my email during the day, my phone syncs with the account i select but still shows all the email i deleted.
so i have to manually delete them from my phone.
i hate this stupid way they made this.
why in *****'s name would i want to save a message that i deleted from the server?
does anybody have a solution to this problem?
because there aren't a lot of good email clients for android.

What type of email you have setup?
POP3, IMAP?
POP3 will not delete emails (if you delete an email from server, it will stay on the device, and vice versa).
In IMAP, if you delete email from server, it will be deleted from the device too (or vice versa -> device-server, on the next sync)

like is said, it's hotmail so it's pop3.
who came up with the brilliant idea to sync imap and not sync pop3?
again, one of those things i so ****ing hate with software.
why does my windows vista mail program (on the laptop) sync beautifully with my account, but not my android mail program?
is android just to retarded to understand how to sync with pop3?
the day somebody comes up with a program that just works.....
it just pisses me off that nothing with the desire is made to be just right, every little rotten thing needs tweaking to make it work right.

..hm I came from a windows mobile device and I synched the same account; deleting an email in outlook has been also deleted on the device - and vice versa!

It's not about android, Desire, or Windows XP. It's how POP3 works.
Even if you setup the same account on 2 different PCs as POP3, you wont be able to delete emails from one PC to the other.
What I suggest is enabling IMAP on gmail and see how it goes.

If it's a gmail account and it used to work on WM but not on Android, then I would delete and re-add the account. My gmail account works great. I delete or mark as read an email on my PC or webmail, and the same goes to my Desire on the next sync.
If we're talking about personal domain (not gmail, hotmail...), then during setup in the Mail application choose the IMAP protocol.

that still deosn't solve the issue with hotmail on the desire.
hotmail is pop3, doesn't do imap.
but it works great with windows mobile.
on android it works like it's just rubbish.

I don't know about that really, I don't use hotmail.
I use gmail, and personal domain/server.
I hope someone else can help you with your hotmail issue.

they can figure out how to get the bleu led to switch on and off, but nobody can make a tweak so hotmail gets synced properly?

I think it's because in the WinMob email app you can tell it to download emails from the last 3 days and anything older disappears automatically.
The Android email apps don't do this but you can set them to delete emails from the server so if you delete the email on your phone it will delete it from the server but you can't do it the other way round.

has anyone found a solution for this.

i have searched all over google already..
So on my S3 i been using the stock email app. i have a hotmail account, same one for years. Every so often when i check my emails they automatically get deleted or disappear. So i log onto my hotmail.com or now "outlook" on my computer and all my emails that disappear move into a POP folder, thats why their not showing up on my phone. I have tried going to more options, and POP and deleting emails settings on my hotmail options.. changed it to what people suggest, and still the same thing happens. Its starting to really piss me off.
I have not tried k-9 email, i would like to use that as a final resort. i like the stock email app, i would just like someone to help me please with this, usually i can figure these things out but i have been banging my head on this for the past month now. Anyone else had this issue? what settings do i need to change on my phone? or on my hotmail account?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Have you tried searching Google Play for Outlook App?

Yes. i have seen that app, but like i said before i would like to use the stock email app. If i download the Outlook app it will still put my emails in a POP folder. Plus the Outlook app is ****... and has ****ty reviews.

In Outlook.com, if you go to More mail settings -> POP and deleting downloaded messages, there are two options for POP syncing:
- Don't let another program delete messages from Outlook. (If your other program is set to "delete messages from the server," we'll simply move them to a special POP folder. They won't be deleted.)
- Do what my other program says—if it says to delete messages, then delete them.
Basically, this happens because POP3 is an unidirectionnal way to communicate between a mail client and a mail server. When the client connects to the server, the server sends all the mails he has to the client. Then the server waits for an instruction from the client: either to delete or not the messages the client has successfully received. As POP3 is unidirectionnal, it can't send a "delete" instruction to the server when you delete a message in your client: it's all or nothing. This was useful when storage space in mailboxes was limited -- when you have a local copy of your mails in your computer, then there is no need to keep a copy in the server, and it frees storage space --, but nowadays, most mailboxes have plenty of space, so there is no need to delete mails from the server.
The last option will obey to what your client send to your mail server: if your client tells the server to delete all the received mails, then Hotmail/Outlook.com will delete straightforward the said mails. On the other hand, the first option won't obey your client's instruction -- and if I'm correct, that's the default configuration in Outlook.com; instead of deleting the mails, Hotmail/Outlook.com will simply move them to a special "POP" folder for you to manually decide later what to do with them in your webmail.
Having those informations, you then may want to check what are your actual Email app's configuration about received mails and selecting your prefered option in Outlook.com. But I believe there is a better option for mail syncing.
What I may suggest you is to add your Hotmail/Outlook.com email account as an Exchange ActiveSync account, instead of a classic POP3 account. This way, you have bi-directionnal communication with your mail account -- a per-mail control of your emails --, push notifications -- you will receive mails as they arrive in your inbox --, access to all your email folders -- you are not limited to your inbox only -- and you can sync your contacts' informations in your Android address book with the infos from your email account.
To do that:
1. Open your Email app in Android;
2. Go to Settings;
(2.2 Optional -- You may want to delete your actual Hotmail/Outlook.com account from the app. It's not necessary, and you may want to do it only at the end of this procedure, when you see your Exchange setup working.)
3. In Settings, add a new email account;
4. Enter your Hotmail/Outlook.com email address in the account field and your password in the password field. Then, press Manual setup;
5. Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync type account;
6. Click Next -- there is no need to change the default settings;
7. At the Account options screen, again, no real need to change anything, though you *may* want to change Period to sync Email to access older emails. Then, click Next;
8. Type a name for your email account to appear in Email app, then you're done!
