This is the fourth occurrence, my Defy will randomly become unable to rotate, become slower than it ever has, and take 4+ seconds just to unlock/lock. The CRT screen is like molasses, and looks horrible when slowed down this much. The phone becomes useless in this state, and sometimes even a reboot will not fix it. It is overclocked ondemand. Typically, it is very responsive and everything except randomly losing an entire connection, works fine. I have been unable to pin point the cause of the problem, it's usually when I'm not even using the phone and it's been sitting there for a half hour or so.
I have had plenty of problems before with the phone, but none like this. This has happened only during my use of CM7.1.
Try wipe cache and dalvik cache
Motorola Defy CM7 RC 1.5 OC 1GHz
Which version you on?
Try updating to the latest one thats coming out today, or the nightly 111110
I sometimes get that with some nightlys, where its like slow-mo, and i need to pull the battery, sometimes still slow afterwards.

My DINC runs great most of the time. But at least once a day it will become very very slow and almost unresponsive. The commands still work, but take 5-10 seconds to complete. A reboot fixes it completely until the next time that it occurs. This has happened with every kernel, ROM, radio, recovery etc. that i've flashed. I first noticed this after flashing a Cyanogen release MONTHS ago and it hasn't gone away since then. Has anybody else run into this and come up with a fix?
I'm currently running MIUI 12.11 with the 2.15.00.09 radio and invisiblek's #18 kernel...obviously i'm rooted with S-off as well.
I have that happen periodically but it is pretty rare and usually I am trying to do a bunch of things at once so I just assume it is user load on the phone.
try unsyncing everything for a day - see if it still happens
If you call it a dinc its going to act like one.
seriously though you have given us nothing to go on here.
what are you running? have you done a full wipe/factory reset?

What do you mean i've given you nothing to go on? I said exactly what i'm running. I don't know what more info you'd want about my phone... I've tried system wipes and flashing different ROMS...all to no avail. This can occur when the phone is sitting idle and other times it happens when i'm doing small things like using TFLN (texts from last night). When I was running Cyanogen months ago it would occur every morning when I would go to turn off my alarm...so it was happening at some point during the night when I was doing nothing. The only app that I have running overnight is Locale.
I basically posed the question to see if anyone else is having the same issue. If not, then it probably has to be something to do with one or more apps not playing nicely.
Make sure you do a full wipe, wipe dalvik, each time you flash to a different ROM.
Second, are you overclocking at all? If you are using setCPU, make sure that the max speed is set to at least 998. I have run into where installing a new ROM the max/min speeds are set low to 245. This causes overall phone slowness though...
If you are overclocking, set it to 998 max and see what happens. I cannot go over 1113600 max or my phone gets all weird.

ditto.
if your phone is syncing a lot of things (facebook, 5 e-mail accounts, twitter, etc.) it might be slowing things down significantly.
I'm a total n00b to the rooting scene - going on almost a week with my rooted DInc - so apologies if this has been addressed (I can't find where its really been addressed definitively). Since I rooted (and only since), I'm occasionally having random reboots while my phone is sitting inactive on my desk. I've only used Sense ROMs (Virtuous, WarmZ, Nil's Business), and they all seem to have it. I have Nil's on now (love it so far!), and for two days, I thought the issue had gone away, but today it has rebooted twice in short order (about 30 minutes apart).
Some things I've observed about this:
- I haven't had it reboot yet while I was using my phone - only while sitting inactive on my desk at work.
- I do have pretty poor signal strength in my office - at rest, it usually shows just a bar, if that.
- The wifi connection I have available is also wonky (router issue, I think); I don't use it (or even have it remembered) because it will connect, but continuously drops and reconnects over and over (not a phone specific issue, used to happen to my BB Curve as well).
This doesn't rise anywhere close to a dealbreaker for me, as it reboots quickly and everything seems to return to normal, but I wanted to ask if anyone had a suggestion to remedy the problem.
Could be a lot of different things. Are you also using custom kernels? Some people will get random reboots when they overclock their processor, but since you say it happens when the device is idle, that sounds unlikely. There was a generation of GB kernels that would cause random reboots if the wi-fi policy allowed the wi-fi to sleep. Switching the wi-fi sleep policy to "never" was the workaround for these, but you are using Froyo and I'm not sure if this same bug ever affected any Froyo kernels.
I know when I ran lou's kernel (don't remember which version) I had a few massive lag moments where the phone was insanely slow and also a couple of random reboots (once was idle and screen off, other was during a phone call).
I didn't continue to run it for those reasons, actually only ran it for 2 days.
You may have better luck just flashing a different kernel with the same ROM you're on, I've had good luck with chad's sense incredikernel (25plusv) - that is, if you're looking for a suggestion for a kernel to flash
Run fix permissions in ROM Manager too.

Since installing CM7.1, my phone has been rebooting randomly -- like 5-8 times a week.
It usually happens when using Google Navigation (but not always); and usually when in the car and plugged in to charger (but not always.)
I thought it was CM, so switched to Sense (Swagged Out Stock) -- but it's still happening -- usually when I most need the navigation!
I tried the GPSCLRX thing; didn't help.
Could it be the car charger? The heat from being on the dashboard? Any way to narrow down the cause?
Thanks!
Is it a full boot or a quick boot? Gingerbread does a quick boot, where it just shows the bootanimation for a few seconds and then reentered the OS, when the system runs out of memory.

It's a full restart -- goes back to the white HTC screen!
Does your phone get hot at all? How many apps do you have running in the background? Phone's usually restart if they run out of memory, get too hot, run out of battery (which I assume isn't the case for you), or have a software error. Checking the temp and the background processes on your phone can help eliminate a few causes and let us know which is the most likely culprit.
I've had this problem before when my phone gets hot. Also more frequently happening when charging and running navigation. This happened a lot when running CM. I changed to deck and it doesn't happen too often now. Not sure if it was coincidental.
Hello all. Ever since I got my EVO, I've been experiencing random restarts, even before I was rooted. Right now, I am running CM7.1 and Tiamat from kernel manager, and I probably have to do about 8 restarts and 5 battery pulls a day, no matter how often I use the phone. For instance, today I woke up and had to do a battery pull because the screen would not turn on. The light was also still orange despite the battery being fully charged. I unplugged it at about 8 in the morning and by 10 with no use, I had to pull the battery again because the screen was frozen off once again. Once I got it back on, the battery was down to 80%. I tried using it and half the apps would force close immediately, so I restarted... You get the picture. Some roms have been better than others, and kernels don't seem to make any difference, and I figured it was about normal. Then, I installed what is supposed to be a really buggy CM7 on my touchpad, and have only had to restart it once in the past 2 days, which makes me question how stable my phone actually should be. Does it seem like I should take it in to sprint, or is my experience about normal?
I also never overclock because of my already poor battery life and have tried underclocking, but don't see any noticible difference
bump. should I post somewhere else?
Run an RUU but stay s-off for the moment and see if the problem persists. If your phone begins working properly, then you can flash a recovery and flash whatever rom you want - but don't restore your backup. I'd start totally fresh if RUUing fixes your problems, don't restore your apps and data, just download them from the Market as you need them.
If the RUU doesn't help and the problem continues, take it in to Sprint. It's up to you if you want to s-on before taking it in - I've never heard of anyone getting problems from Sprint with s-off but without root, but I think it's a general rule to do so.
I hope everything works out for you!

I have heard and seen on here many times that random reboots are caused by battery problems, and bad software installs. Try calibrating the battery, also use battery monitor widget to see what ur batt temps are. Then reinstall all your apps, do not restore them then see if that helps.

I'll try an RUU when I get enough time to do some thorough testing. I have reinstalled everything directly from the market multiple times since I've had the phone, and also have used a total of four batteries with no change in behavior. I Will try the RUU soon though. Thanks for the replies
My S3 has recently been extremely laggy and will be unresponsive for up to 5 minutes at a time. Occasionally, it will reboot, but usually it will just freeze and stay there. I haven't installed any new apps and I kept an eye on my CPU temps and clock speeds. Seems like it is always running at 1.5 GHz whenever I touch the screen and stays there until the screen is turned off. CPU temps also reached as high as 69 Celsius and cooled down to a constant 47-50 Celsius (which I believe is unusually high).
I've ODINed back to stock NF1 and NH2 firmware, and the lag still persists. I've flashed SlimKat 9, CM11 M12, and it seems the 4.4 ROMs freeze more often than the CM12.1 0516 nightly I'm currently running, but all ROMs I use all freeze up. On 4.4.4, I used LeanKernel v9.16 with no overclock/overvolt and interactiveX. On 5.1, I'm using the stock kernel.
Could my hardware be damaged? I can't tolerate this freezing issue anymore, especially since each reboot drains battery and will lead to another hang 50% of the time. I actually contemplated tossing my phone against the wall.
Does it hang from a fresh flash without any third party apps installed? If so, then it is probably a hardware issue

Just flashed the CM12.1 nightly as a clean install. Ran all apps and did not experience any hangs, will do further testing to confirm the issue is gone. Seems like your advice worked and I should be ashamed because I troubleshoot computers and it's what I do/recommend when a computer is slow.
