I want to flash the "Stock Messaging App" from the "Sidekick 4G Stock Rom". Can I flash this? I really like the UI of the messaging app, and I would love to use it on my phone. Considering it is a apk in general, I'm still unsure because it runs on a different framework. Can someone help me with these questions. Is it possible to flash it? Can someone help me?
Phone: T-Mobile G2 - HTC Desire Z
System: MIUI 1.9.23 by OsiMood
Flashed: Extended Setting and Superuser Beta 3.0
Thanks you guys! I expect good answers considering XDA-Developers is the best place for these types of questions!

Hmm, not sure if this would work. I haven't flashed apps from other phones, but I guess you could make nandroid backup and then sideload it. If it starts freaking out, just restore your nandroid. My guess is that the app will just force close on you.

Have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846231

Don't think it'll work like you said different frameworks. If they were the same you could just copy the .apk to your G2, and open it with a file explorer and install.
Since they're different theres some converting to do I'm sure...

Rootzwiki > ET4G forums > they have a completely stripped ROM for you.
Yes, there are other ROMs...
There are indeed custom ROMs out there...I am just offering help for those folks like me who are rooted but wish to continue using the stock ROM and just tweak it a bit by stripping it down and removing bloat. Installing a full custom ROM is a separate matter...

Backup/Restore Suggestions...
The first thing I like to do immediately after rooting a new phone and making a ClockworkMod backup is to use Root Explorer to then make two copies of the following folders prior to stripping out any apps: System/App folder, System/Media folder, and the ClockworkMod/Backup folder (Which at this point contains a ClockworkMod backup of the original, unstripped stock ROM.)
I like to keep one copy of each of these three folders on the SD card itself, and put the second copy of each on my computer at home as a safe, redundant backup.
Then, if you ever want to restore any app that you had previously stripped out, you simply use Root Explorer to copy and paste the app (and it's .odex file) from your original copy of the System/App folder on the SD card to the System/App folder on the phone, and then (if necessary) change the app and it's .odex's permissions to match the correct settings that all of the other apps and .odex's are set to: Long-press the .apk or .odex, select "permissions", then make sure the permissions match up exactly with the other system .apk's permissions. Reboot the phone, and the app will be restored, good to go! (I like to reboot to recovery and clear the cache and Dalvik cache also...)
Cheers!

Thanks VegasRooted...looking to do something similar with my E4T. Too many apps running in the background that I have no idea what they're doing.
I'm having a problem finding the Insecure Kernel that closely resembles mine: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734. Can you point me to where I can find the correct one? I can't show the link that I found at Inspired Geek that lists different kernels.

Google "Epic 4G Touch Root Zedomax" and go to the XDA forum thread where you can follow the instructions to use Odin to install a (mostly) stock kernel with Superuser added to it, or Google "Android Creative Syndicate" and go to their website where you can find another Kernel to load the same way that has Superuser and ClockworkMod in it...Both will get you rooted, and there is a stock ROM (EG30) out there also that you can install with Odin in case anything goes wrong and you have to roll everything back to stock...(I did this once also.)
I am using Zedomax's Kernel right now...once installed it shows as "2.6.35.7"
Cheers!

Thanks so much! This gave me a great start to getting rid of everything useless on my phone.
hey OP, thanks for the list.
I posted a ROM a little while ago on rootz here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8056-rom-10262011-naerokrom-beta-v12-odex-bare-bones-130mb/
on the 3rd post, I listed all the apk's I removed through personal testing. There might be some in there you don't have listed, if you want to take a look. Hope it helps get rid of all the junk you don't need. I'm sure you are OCD like I am about pre-installed crapware
If I dont want to uninstall all those applications, can I just use titanium backup to freeze them and be just as effective?

depends on what you mean by "effective"
although they are frozen, they still take up a lot of space in the /system partition.
I like to remove them completely and keep the partition as light as possible
Cool

Great work! Is it possible to make a zip file that's flashable through CWM that will remove these unneeded files..

Thank you thread starter for this thread One of the best ever!! lol. I really want to know what all the apps mean and what they do before I remove it and something stops working that I usually use. I don't want to make any extra work for anybody though. I guess I can google the stuff I don't know.
Hey question for you all.. This is a picture of what im running.. With what im running am i able to safely still remove the above apps?

Those are mostly still correct. I thought removing Google talk messed other stuff though so I wouldn't delete that. When I run a stock setup I only delete stuff I know for sure I don't use. This includes the Samsung widgets and apps, Sprint apps, and the randoms like nova and nascar.
This is basically cakulins bare rom converter. With the exception of a few apps.

Does that still work? I seem to remember having an issue the last time I tried it.
It does. Remember that you have to flash it immediately after flashing a new Rom.

Hi Guys
Is it possible to get the newer version of android market with the runnymede AIO custom rom?
When i use the market at the moment it goes to the older version. I have the market enabler app which came with the rom - which i have no idea/understanding of what this does or is for?
Any help would be great
Thanks
Manny
i have read that the market-enabler just enables stuff that was hidden or blocked based on your country.
this app dont change paid stuff to free, orupdates it-it just removes the country-based market.
let me know if im wrong
hi
i think ur right as i've read similar. i'm not really too bothered about that stuff.
any ideas on how to get the newer market version?
Search for the latest market app (vending.apk) anywhere in xda. Download and install.
Want it a bit complicated, replace the existing vending.apk in system with the new vending apk. Clear dalvik and cache for good measure.Reboot.
via xda app
Hi
Could someone help me find the apk for this and advise how to update/install it?
Thanks
Manny
Try this one.. version 3.4.4
Install to replace the old one
hi
thanks for that - do i just move it to my sd card as a zip? is the install process automatic?
Thanks
Manny
That is an apk, not zip. Put it in your sdcard. Use your file explorer to install it.
If you don't have one, download one from market... e.g. andexplorer
Edit: I think you do have ES File Explorer that comes with the ROM, use it to install the apk.
Hello,
Right i've been using the LeeDroid ROM and everything's perfect. During install, it asked me on the AROMA menu if I wanted to remove sense and install AOKP. I chose to keep Sense (because I didn't want to lose stock apps; didn't know if they were included), but now i'm using Apex Launcher but I want to keep the AOKP GUI instead - Is there a way I can install it? Maybe by re-running the Leedroid ROM installer (I don't want to overwrite all my data) or something? HELP!!
Thanks
Check this out. It may be what you need. I've been using it on top of leedroid 640 for quite some time

unfortunately their is no easy way... sometimes backups using backup tools can work but they are hit and miss in my experience (for example could never get a decent backup of twicca with all my settings )
best thing to do is take snapshots of all your screens and in conjunction with playstore take your time to restore! picking a good rom is key to not having to repeat this process - i highly recommend renovate rom with xminsters kernel.
happy flashing
