How Do I Flash Apks? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to flash the "Stock Messaging App" from the "Sidekick 4G Stock Rom". Can I flash this? I really like the UI of the messaging app, and I would love to use it on my phone. Considering it is a apk in general, I'm still unsure because it runs on a different framework. Can someone help me with these questions. Is it possible to flash it? Can someone help me?
Phone: T-Mobile G2 - HTC Desire Z
System: MIUI 1.9.23 by OsiMood
Flashed: Extended Setting and Superuser Beta 3.0
Thanks you guys! I expect good answers considering XDA-Developers is the best place for these types of questions!

Hmm, not sure if this would work. I haven't flashed apps from other phones, but I guess you could make nandroid backup and then sideload it. If it starts freaking out, just restore your nandroid. My guess is that the app will just force close on you.

Have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846231

Don't think it'll work like you said different frameworks. If they were the same you could just copy the .apk to your G2, and open it with a file explorer and install.
Since they're different theres some converting to do I'm sure...

Getting Verizon .apks on Nexus One Rom

I Flashed the yetirom which i find to be the best so far, but i am unable to access the verizon section of the market, is there anyway to get these apps or will i need to reflash sense then extract them somehow? any help is appreciated.

Would it be as simple as downloading the APKs and uploading them for you?
Im not sure, its worth a try. In particular the only apps i want to get are skype mobile and backup assistant. But anything is fine, i am curious to see if it will just install or if some modding is needed.
Wait, you flashed a N1 ROM to your DInc? I didn't think that was possible! Is it a Froyo Rom? How is the performance?
Yea! LOL. I'm running yetirom 2.1. You can find it here on the forums and I must say I love it. It is the stock rom of the nexus one and its 2.1. The performance is a bit better but I do not think it is optimized as the unrevolved rom was a bit faster. That's why I am trying to get the vzw apps. On the n1 the Verizon section of the market is a downloads button.
You'll need to change some stuff in the build.prop in order to get the VZW market working.
Thanks for the reply... Care to elaborate on the build.prop file? where is it located and how would i go about editing it?

Vanilla Dialer on HTC Sense ROM ?

Hey y'all! I did a whole guide of using the Vanilla MMS app on HTC Sense, it was a SUCCESS! Soo now, I was wondering if someone could see if the DIALER on the Vanilla ROM can work with the HTC Sense ROM.
So basically, I am needing someone to Extract the Vanilla (or other ROM) Dialer and put it on the Sense UI ROM. Somehow, my phone has different settings, so I can do this myself.
If you find out, please provide the APK and a guide if possible!!
This should be fairly easy and possible. Should be just like porting the MMS on Vanilla to HTC Sense! I need testers! Thanks guys!
Hope you like my guide on Vanilla MMS on HTC Sense! thanks all!
PS. Is it possible for Vanilla Gallery to work on Sense UI? I will be testing this tomorrow, also, I will keep this thread updated! Thanks!!
Also, if anyone has CM and whatever kinds of ROMS out there, If they can post their Dialer.apk's or apk's related to dialers/phones that would be AWESOME thanks!
Anyone know how to BOLD the Title? I kinda FAILED at it! hhahah thanks guys!
I will test anything you want i HATE the sense dialer!

I can't remember now, but a while ago I used the contacts.apk and phone.apk from an aosp rom (don't remember which one) on a sense rom (not sure which one either, maybe it was Tainted Vanilla).
You can try ripping those apks from and eclair (not froyo) rom and seeing if they work, or download the old Tainted Vanilla rom (maybe even one of the new ones) and see which dialer they use.

maybe rip the contacts.apk and phone.apk from CyanogenMod-6.1 for Vision :: V6.1.0-RC2 and give that a shot.
btw: you can download the rom, un-zip them and navigate to system/app/ and grab the apk's from there, That is what I did for the vanilla Mms.apk
thanks Wheeliest! You never disappoint me! hah

Cool! thanks for the support guys! A little mistake I did.. i didn't copy the Contacts.apk haha soo if someone can copy that and maybe the lib file like shortlived says! thanks guys! lets make this into a reality!
edited because i found my mistake....also any luck?
Here is what ive gotten to work so far... I found a replacement dialer here http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/59459-replace-htc-dialer-dialerone-vanilla-clone.html
Download that file there then take these steps
1. change file name to com.android.htcdialer.apk
2. get your phone into recovery and mount the /system
3. adb push com.android.htcdialer.apk /system/app/
4. restart phone and your good to go.
be warned this does not get you the stock dialer. This is a clone type app which does look very similar but it has a few bugs. the main ones being it still uses the htc contacts app to add info and whatnot. i will play with this some more and see if i can't get it to work better by changing over the contacts.apk however I see a LOT of things all tied together with sense so i'm not sure how much more we will be able to do. it might be eaiser to just make a better clock/weather/animations and drop the sense ui all together.
My god.
["b] initiates the bold and ["/b] terminates it. (get rid of the " when ur acutally doing it)
why would u [b/] and then type ur message?
ur just initiating it and then terminating it...

[MOD] Sensor rotating 2.1 Rosie

Since there is no thread regarding this mod, and since i wanted it for myself so badly, after busting Flemmard's balls for about 2 hours I managed to make it
It simply makes the launcher go to landscape without the need to slide the keyboard out.
This has only been tested on Virtuous Sense 2.0.0
Very cool. If I used rosie I would use this.
Am at work so cannot test this myself, but does anyone know if this will also break the lockscreen options menu on the Sense 3.0 lockscreen?
Yes it probably will. The lockscreen will still work but you won't have the options to change it.

This, will not work on unity.

tried to install on a dz with virtuous2.0 works fine, but on a 2nd boot it doesnt work anymore
Has been working for me great all this time. It started "breaking" this morning though, after i installed the sense 3.0 lockscreen. The thing is that rosie gets fubar sometimes on its own will, when exiting a landscape game for example...
rosire rotate desire z
hi,
I have instaled Rosie.apk with no problems and now when I rotate the phone the homescreen also rotate without opening the keyboard. (I have desire Z -rooted with Virtuous Sense v2.0.0). But when I restart phone this function dissaper so I have to install Rosie.apk again. Is there any way to fix that.
I havent had problems of sort, but if i were you i'd try the flashable version.

thanks for answer but I am new in android world and I am not shure what means flashable version. Does that mean that I have to download the Rotating_Rosie.zip file and apply it with ROM Manager as I would install new ROM? Is there any chance ob bricking the divice or being stuck in boot loop when doing this?

There is all ways a risk flashing mods. But as long as you use the mod on the correct Rom you will normally be fine.
To apply the rotating_rosie.zip you need to flash in recovery. You can use Rom manager. But I would suggest that you learn how to use CWM recovery to get full manual control over your device.

Extract and flash lockscreen and camera?

I am curently running a Rom that I can't get to work right. The major features that I like are the lockscreen and the camera.
Is it possible to extract the .apk from the current Rom and a) install the apk on a new Rom, or b) create a flashable zip with the apk's, or c) insert/replace the apk's into the new Rom before flashing?

I don't think it's possible for the lockscreen since I'm pretty sure that's not an apk. It may be possible for camera, but I'm not sure. I'll let some smarter people weigh in on that.
It would probably help if you said the ROM you're running (the one that has the camera and lock screen that you like) and maybe even the ROM you're switching to. That way, even if it's not possible, people can still recommend some alternatives.
After further research, theoretically its possible. There is sense 3.0 lockscreen and camera apk's pulled from the EVO, but I don't know if they work on the DINC yet. What I'm wondering now is if I pull the apk from my 2.1/3.0 sense Rom that I'm on now, will it work on the Stock plus (2.1) Rom.
Sent from my Droid Incredible using XDA App
I'm on Inc2McTwist. Just didn't want to make Oomcdoo or anyone else mad if I was talking about taking stuff from his ROM to customize my phone. I really like his black themed lock ring, and the sense 3.0 camera has more features, is easier to use and in my opinion takes better pictures than the stock DINC camera.

it is possible but:
You would need to edit the framework-res.apk and com.htc. resource.apk to make the camera and lock screen work from a 3.0 to a 2.1 rom. its not as simple as installing the apk. with sense everything is tied together. sorry. :/
That's what I was afraid of. I was maybe hoping I could extract what I needed. Wish I knew how to dev ;-(

I guess I'll have to use something like Agile Lock. And wait until someone makes it easier to get the updated camera ported to our dinc.

[Q] Is there a way to enable call recording in stock ROM?

Hello there,
I have a rooted t999, unlocked. After going through multiple posts on this forum, I have realized that to enable the call recording feature on your samsung galaxy s3 t999, you got to install a custom ROM.
But, is there any way to update a .apk (or any other method) , compatible with the stock ROM on t999 which might enable the call recording feature back?
Cheers!

Here is the one from FreeGS3 r6.
This is NOT my work!
This the stock UVALG1 Dialer app modded by uoY_redruM, dev for the FreeGS3 rom. All thanks and credit goes to him!
(Try out his rom, btw. It is awesome!)
This should work on any stock based rom though.
I'm pretty sure this is where the mod is included. Not sure right now if its dependant on another modded apk as well. Heading to work so will check later if this doesn't work by itself.

So will this not work on custom ROMs?
Its the samsung dialer so itll only work on stock based roms.
It'll likely be dependant on other parts of the touchwiz framework and is integrated along with contacts and such.
You can try it but I would be extremely surprised if it worked on anything like CM or ASOP.

Wait, sorry I shoulda been specific I guess! I don't think you can install like a normal app.
Use root explorer and copy the original from /system/app for your backup.
Pay attention to the permissions it has and copy the modded one over the old. Change permissions to what they were before. Reboot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik, then reboot system.
Test.

This is quite interesting! Although I have root explorer, I am terrible with the android stuff and so I am worried about replacing this apk with the existing phone.apk. (its the lack of "recovery" knowledge that scares me to go ahead)
Has anyone of you experts made the dialer work so far through this integration of FreeGS3 phone.apk on the stock ROM?
Cheers!
Another thing that I just figured - In my stock ROM, I do not have a phone.apk (attaching screenshot)
Which app should be backed up? I am guessing that the GS3 apk should be renamed as the stock ROM apk. correct?
http://db.tt/t7Ig4rsG
Edit 2:
guys, just figured out that there is actually an .apk called SecPhone_TMO.apk (kept searching for phone.apk )
so, please ignore the screenshot above!
although, will wait for someone to try replacing the stock ROM .apk with the GS3.
Worked perfect on Wicked's ROM. Have to move the stock phone APK out of the system\app directory and replace it with Doc's. Make sure to put the phone in airplane mode first.
Question - where are the recordings stored?
Thanks for the awesome mod!
They are stored at /sdcard/sounds/
Thank uoy_redrum at the freegs3 thread. Its his work not mine.

I wouldn't worry much about it. Especially if you make a copy of the original file as a backup on extSDcard.
Titanium backup works really well too.
Biggest thing to remember is the permissions.
If you can boot into recovery, wiping cache is no big deal at all. Wiping dalvik isn't bad either. When you reboot it'll rebuild dalvik but will use the new app you copied into system.
ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE ANYTHING!!!
That's the most important yhing you can do when messing with anything. It basically creates an exact image/snapshot of your current setup so you can go back to it at anytime.
Nandroid = Peace of Mind!
