[Q] Best rom/kernel to put on friends Incredible? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my friend wants me to root his Incredible and install a Rom on his phone to help with the performance and battery issues he's been having. What do you guys think is the best Rom/Kernel for the Incredible and what mod's and tweaks should I put on it for him? I likely won't be able to update things for him much so I want something that's stable.
I was thinking CM 7.1 like I have on my Atrix 4G which I love but what do you guys suggest because you all actually have the phone?
Sorry for the noobish question, I just don't know that much about the Incredible and the development going on for it.
Thanks!

There's that CM7.1, or Bugless Beast, or if he wants our Incredible stock Sense, there's roms like Stock+, and a few others that are pretty nice. They're all stable, and as for kernels, go onto Incredikernel.com, and go to latest downloads, and you'll see kernels for AOSP roms, or some for Sense roms under that. Even though there's a bunch, just get the latest, those are probably the best Incredible kernels, they're nice on battery life, and have a lot of other nifty features. Also, for roms, if he would like MIUI, last time I tried it, it was virtually bug free, but I just don't personally care for it, because of the iOS look. Good luck though, hope this helps with what you're doing.

I've been using Joelz Prime-XL-3D (Sense 3.5, GB 2.3.5) for a couple of weeks now, and I love it. I was on a stock ROM forever thinking that speed and battery life would be better, but I was wrong. Yes this is slightly slower than stock, and the battery lasts about an hour less than before (maybe I use it more now?), but I can live with both. I'm about to try Tiny's latest kernal so maybe battery life increases.
The only problem I have had (and it's a known issue) is that the camera FC's all the time, sometimes requiring a battery pull. But again I love it.

Inc deck with incredikernel.

you might want to skip the undervolting. It's a lengthy process to get it right and still if you shoot up a lot of programs at once it can cause your phone to reboot. Mainly happens to me when I used the camera, the worst time ever for it to reboot when I want to capture a moment.
But if you use the above you'll for sure get much better speed, performance, battery life with a little flare of sexy if you choose (customizing your launchers, widget locker, or if you use android kitchen)

I tried that on mine, worked great most of the time but occasionally caused reboots at really bad times. I figured it wasn't worth the battery gain, but all phones are different and can handle different voltages so it probably still is worth to try it out.

Thanks guys!
I think I'll just put CM 7.1 on it with EXT4 /data and /cache and undervolt it. I'm running V6 Supercharger on my Atrix, what do you guys recommend for the Incredible? Universal Adrenaline V13 or V6 Supercharger Update 9 RC3.2?
Thanks again.

try adrenaline first, luckily you can mount and delete the scripts, restart then try v6 and compare, most of what u seek needs to be established by trial and error with comparison since everyone is different. odds are you'll be on cm7 if you go aosp route....incredikernel is best for that, everything else past that is personal choice once you experiment everything

Been out of the game for a while. Hoping for some discussion.

Hey guys running miui and haven't been keeping up on all the roms as of late.
Just wanted to see if anyone would like to recommend any new roms and kernels to try out.
Big things im looking for is speed, stability, and battery life. Also the look of the rom.
4g isn't as important but would be nice though battery life is really important though can't stress that enough.
And about kernals could someone explain the main differences totally lost on those. Like the havs and cuts and what not.
So any suggestions?

You're in the right place, people aren't just replying. But anyways...to the point
Sense rom- Mikfroyo, Myn's Warm 2.2, Azrael, Evio, are the talk from what I hear, all offer good battery life, and performance. All have 4g, as being a sense rom
AOSP- Personally I recommend CM7 Nightlies, android 2.3 You can also get the nightly version w/ wimax, based off build 24.
Kernels:
Savaged zen HAVS CFS+ works well for me giving me
HAVS- basically has a "preset" setcpu installed to regulate battery voltages
NO HAVS ^ none of that
SBC -superior battery charger, trickle charges your battery to get the "full 100%" can damage your battery, use at your own risk, and can cause the phone to lag
CFS- a fair scheduler to moderately disperse, well rounded
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894880 <- all ya need to know on kernels. I hope this helps.
Edit: http://mirror.munkibizness.com/ link to the savaged zen kernels. Also, give a kernel 2 or 3 days to "set in" for you phone to get used to it. Won't see a change right off the bat.
Thanks Alot Man, appreciate it.
Anytime man. Let me know if there's anything else I can help ya' with.

i'm running 1.1.28 and having alot of stability and force close problems hang ups freezes etc. it's really annoying and while i love the look, which is basically prettier iphone with widgets. wish folders were as easy as ios though a little annoying on here so i haven't organized my apps since i had to reinstall all my apps.
i'm really just looking for the best battery life first, then stability/speed. and i'm so low on time to test stuff. working for a startup that just got funded so we are in overdrive trying to do the work of 20 odd people with just 4 or 5
Did you run calk's format all script before flashing? I'm on 1.1.28 as well and it has been more stable for me than any ROM i've ever tried. Not a single force close or reboot, it doesn't hang, and my battery can last two full days. Also have you tried any different kernels? For folders I use SiMi Folder Widget, it's very easy to organize and it looks great.

yes i did interested in your setup it's nice what do you use
Well like I said, I'm on MIUI 1.1.28 with the kernel that it comes with, LauncherPro Plus, SiMi Folder and SiMi Clock. All of the icons are part of DreamLyfe icon packs. I use Agenda Widget and System info Widget on one page and then Beautiful Weather and Pandora widgets on the other. That's pretty much it, I like to keep things nice an simple.

[Q] Absolute Best Battery Life (ROM & Kernal + mods)

I'll be joining in a protest soon. Since having access to charge my Evo as often I usually do, I need to change ROM's I think.
I currently run MIUI 1.9.16 with Tiamat 4.0.6 SBC, no mods.
Can anyone suggest ROM's and Kernals that will grant me the best battery life as well as what mods and scripts I should run?
AOSP or Sense, doesn't matter with me.
Thank you for any advice that is given.
^_^
The best battery life I have gotten was from MikFroYo 4.4 with Netarchy-Toastmod-4.3.4
Edit: The easiest way to extend battery life, is to turn off all radios not in use (GPS/4G/Mobile Networks/Bluetooth), and turn your brightness down as far as you can.
in my opinion it seems that froyo (2.2) roms get better battery life, also running SBC is always better.. and the things said above obviously

I'm currently using Swagged Out rom, With Lithids Freedom Aggressive kernel which is undervolted by -175, and V6 SuperCharger script! Its an amazingly smooth stock rom. Kernel wise its the best battery life I've ever gotten on my EVO. And as to V6 SuperCharger I've used it on every Rom I've flashed its awesome. Their are links to eveything in my signature.
I'm a flash-a-holic so i wouldn't really know wat the best combo is but i just flashed the new snowy Rom so going to give it a couple days with the aggressive freedom 9 kernel (128/768 interactivex) and see how it goes...

ICS From + ICS Incredikernel

Hi, my name is Dylan and im a noob. I searched the forums and couldn't find my answer if its out there could someone please link it, but if its not here goes..
Let me start off saying I'm fascinated by phone rooting and all the things that are possible and I'm so thankful for these forums so shout out to all the devs. My amazing girlfriend bought me my first smartphone for Christmas (dinc) and I'm amazed by it. Thanks to these forums I've successfully downgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.2 and rooted it. I'm obsessed with flashing roms now, but kushdecks ics has me I love the look, but sorry for the irrelevant info to my question. I'm using incredikernel ics idk the version its the latest one and I enabled zram overclocked to the Max setting and set to smartassv2. Now I was wondering is there any way to tweak it a little more to speed it up and get more out of the battery? I have the 2150 battery but it still drains it like a mug. And also my phone sometimes just freezes and I need to pop the battery out because it just totally lags out. Any fix to that as well? I already followed the setting guide with the wifi, sync, location etc. Thanks.

Well if you've been through the dislplay setting and cut the diplay to 15 % brightness sound like you've done that part well.
CPU settings, i prefer intellidemand but whatever floats your boat.
If you are determined to stick to ICS I suggest swithcing to Evervolv preview 7, its a bit farther along than ics inc deck in development.
If battery life is your top prority, I suggest switching to one of the AOSP gingerbread roms like CM7, Inc-Deck, or OMGB/OMFGB. they run great and no programs really hog battery.
Use adrenaline mod v13, since i began using it I've gotten better life. It can be found in POQbum's post at the top of the dev forum.
Finally, monitor your usage. Playing with your phone can be addictive, just remember that the display is usually the culprit behind poor battery life.
Good Luck!

I might be wrong about this but I believe by overclocking you mean increase the CPU speed which in return will usually equate to lower battery life. That ROM is also still in alpha stage. Some roms with good battery life are miui, not the ics version, and some have great luck with CM7.
If you're desiring battery life, go to the cm7 nightly thread and use one of the kangs. Ics isn't ready for daily use quite yet

Best/recomended MIUI rom?

Hello all.
I've been out the loop for a while now, still got stock sense on my DZ but have recently become very interested in MIUI roms. I have a few quick questions I hope someone can answer as after reading the various roms etc I'm a bit confused.
1. How well do MIUI roms work with the hardware keyboard? I'm seeing a few threads saying it isn't totally supported. This is a deal breaker for me really, can anyone clarify?
2. Which MIUI rom? I see there is an official one, but also others similar to official eg MIUIandroid, any particular 'best' version?
3. How is the battery life compared to sense? Does anyone have any current draw figures for screen off etc, my sense draws around 32mA screen off.
4. I assume they come with overclockable kernels, if so, is OC beater or whatever it's called still the best to use?
I'm interested to hear from MIUI users, sell it to me.
1. I've had no problems while using the keyboard with MIUI, it seems to work the same way as before. I have heard some people say that their backlights don't work but mine do. However, landscape is not supported on the homescreen but it is everywhere else.
2. I use the official english supported rom for Desire Z/G2, you can get it from ROM Manager or the MIUI website. I'm not sure about the best one because I've only used the official one.
I don't know about 3 and 4 but I do enjoy using MIUI. It was the first rom I used after I rooted my phone. I used to want sense but because of emoji support and themes I probably won't use another. I do recommend it as I have not been disappointed.
Thanks for replying.
Instead of exact current figures, maybe you could say what your typical daily use is like and what your battery level is at the end of the day?
I've tried miui us and miui android. Both are good and can tell any difference in look feel or performance. Also tried a couple of the miui v4 roms in the dev section. They are really good and give a snappier feel to the miui environment.
V4 is possibly better with battery but marginal. Compared to the stock rom I came from, battery is much improved. No figures I'm afraid as my days vary greatly. Camera is an issue on all ICS roms on the dz/g2 so decide if that's a problem or not.
Enjoy.

Thanks for that.
I'm gonna flash the 'official' miuiAndroid tonight I think, need the camera so the ICS is a no go for now.
As long as battery is noticeably better than stock sense then I'll be happy.

i definitely recommend the MIUIandroid version, the translation is far more complete. Miui.us just has faster servers! If you send/receive a bunch of picture messages, I suggest you download my modified Mms.apk from the link in my signature, more info is in that thread.
I've been using MIUI.au v4 for the last few days. pictures are slightly annoying, but if you take two or three, you usually get a good one, but the pictures do have to be taken in landscape.
Well I have been running it for the day and I have to say that I love it! Much better than sense, seems really stable and I love the customisation.
I was going to ask about that mms thing, I'll check the thread out.
As for the battery, it has run down quite quick today but I've been playing with it a lot and expect to need to have a few charge cycles till it settles.
One question though, does the OC/OVbeater overclocking thing work with this rom/kernel or should I stick with set cpu?

Just to give you an answer, I don't know. But it's an AOSP kernel so... it should!
Have you flashed the bulletproof addon? It adds the Vituous OC daemon as well as OC/UV Beater. From there you can operate as intended and should probably have no issues. Personally I've never been able to OC over 1,3GHz on any MIUI ROM, may be the Tiamat kernel for me though...Anyway the highest I'd go on MIUI would be just barely 1,3-1,4GHz! Practically you wouldn't be needing more than 1,2GHz for heavier apps but considering this is MIUI and is a bit heavier, 1,3GHz will cater your needs.
Otherwise, OC/UV Beater will work but it will be limited to just Normal configuration, since the Virtuous OC daemon (which I presume you use?) is not cooked in, hence it can not be configured. You also can't undervolt because viper uv is also not included. If you're not interested in flashing Bulletproof then I'd stick with either SetCPU or even CPU Tuner (switched to this over from SetCPU and liking the fact it has more extensive configuration, as well as less battery drain). You can find CPU Tuner in the market, if you're interested.
Also, battery life wasn't half as bad actually. I find the MIUI Launcher to be a bit heavy and more resource consuming for my use. You can use Go Launcher or ADW if you want though.
Take a look at the bulletproof add on pack. It includes some nice tweaks, one being a kernel that supports OCing.

I will like to second that! Im running a MIUI V4 port by ajhavery and lenny_kano (MIUI_Au 4.0.3 base 2.3.2) and it is working very well. Except my battery life is not as good as the official MIUI ROMS. BTW Angel Camera from the market works perfectly on this ROM with no glitches.

Oh so you can use the bulletproof add on with any miui rom then?
I'm using setcpu just now but I may try cpu tuner. I tend not to overclock to be honest, I'm more interested in underclocking when screen is off etc but I may try 900MHz or 1GHz, it's running very smooth at 800MHz though.

1. Bulletproof addon is for ANY 2.3 based miui. NOT miui v4.
2. The chip in dz/g2 is designed to run at 1ghz. Htc just UCed it to save on juice and market it as a lower spec (that's how I understood it anyway). I find at 800 it just feels a touch laggy. That extra 100 takes the edge off.

Does installing bulletproof clear any data at all?
Is it flashed from recovery?
Shouldn't clear anything. I say shouldn't as you can never guarantee it. I've never had any issues. Always a good idea to clear cache and dalvik when flashing anything. And yes, its flashed in recovery.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
So I flashed this at the weekend and so far all is well.
Though I must admit, I'm not noticing the battery gains I was hoping for, a minimal boost is all. It does kinda seem that it uses more with the screen on than it used to, some comparison figures for those interested, taken using battery monitor widget.
Screen Off
Stock Sense: 31-34mA current draw
MIUI: 28mA Current Draw
Screen On (taken as sitting at homescreen doing nothing)
Stock Sense: 147-190mA
MIUI: 137-230mA
It's probably still calibrating and I never wiped the battery stats. Would there be a benefit in doing so?
Also, I have noticed that when charging, the light goes green when charge is only around 90% done, any news on this?
The light goes green once the battery is > 90%, this is more or less intended behaviour.
There had been a recent announcement by a Google employee that wiping the battery stats has no visible battery life improvement. All it does is wipe the statistics file that shows you what uses your battery. What you can merely do is run the battery down to 20~% (wouldn't go below that as the failsafe might go off) and then back to 100% for 3-4 times, so that the Battery Meter can become more accurate. From there it is ideal to run it down to 20-30% twice every month in order to keep the battery health in good shape.
MIUI was merely created to be iPhone-ish, cool looking, and very user friendly. It looks awesome, inarguably, but battery life isn't it's strong point. I wouldn't be surprised if it draw more than Sense itself, too. ROM's that have the best battery life are barebones. These have a lot of features suppressed in order to save up in RAM as well as battery consumption. There's also little customizing you can do to them.
However, if you want a good battery life ROM that does not cost you anything in features, you should try Tsubus' ILWT CM7 ROM. It is a CyanogenMod 7 based ROM, that has been fine tuned for speed and battery life alike. I've been a user for a long time and the phones takes me easily through a day with plenty of juice left (about 40-50%). You will have to go through the above meter calibration process again.
Yeah I know and don't get me wrong, MIUI gets me through a day no problem, maybe I was just being a bit too hopeful.
Have to say though that I have fallen in love with MIUI, I can't imagine using another rom now.
well if you are looking to use the bulletproof addon then i made a rom myself with some mods included in it... you can check it out from the link in my signature...

[Q] Is the Epic what I really want?

Looking for a capable Android phone for my mom. She has no experience with any kind of smartphone. But she knows for sure that she wants a slide-out keyboard. Our other requirement is that the phone work on Page Plus (Verizon network). I'm well capable of getting the Epic 4G working with Page Plus. Since we're using Page Plus, there's no contract, hence no carrier subsidy... which is what brings me to the Epic 4G.
The price is nice-- obviously much nicer than any newer phone. My only concern is that the phone may be antiquated, and might not be up to the task of modern apps. I don't expect much, though it's gotta be able to at least run Angry Birds without stuttering (I feel this is a reasonable place to set the bar).
Would anyone care to speak to the phone's performance, and whether this phone will suffice for another year under today's newer apps?
Thanks!
FYI, I plan to root and install CM7, based on what I've read here regarding performance and battery life.
I still think of the Epic as one of the greatest phones to date. With the requirements you specified it should suit your Mom's needs. You can even drop a little overclocking on that CM7 to give her that extra burst of speed to handle those nasty birds..lol.

Thanks Kenny. BTW, I've noticed that CM9 has been pretty stable for a while, and that CM9.1 has even been released. I wouldn't be ready to dive into CM10 just yet, as that's still on nightlies. But in your opinion, do you think CM9.1 is up to snuff with CM7 in terms of performance and battery life?
I think it is definitely there in stability but I don't think anything beats CM7 in battery life setting for setting. Next would be the TW GB ROMs and then CM9 for battery life..imho.

Your humble opinion is much appreciated. In general, does CM7/GB have better battery life than CM9/ICS, or is the difference in battery life specific to the Epic ROMs?
i got some of my best battery life on CM9 about 19 hours with 2 hour onscreen time all push notifications off , i'd recommend getting a epic 4g touch battery for her the extra 300mAh makes all the difference on the ride home from work

Yes on the Epic, in my experience because CM9, ICS and JB are meant for phones with 1GB of RAM and is tough on resources. If you use a GB ROM the same as a CM9 or higher ROM with notifications and syncs on, GB will get better battery life everytime. I would get 4 Hours screen on time with my Epic on The People's ROM and be about 30% when putting on charge at night.
For battery life CM7 ROCKS!!!!!!!!! CM9 not so much and I haven't tried 10 but 9 gives me issues so not even thinking of 10. I have CM7 on both mine and wife's phone and she couldn't be more happy.

Agreed again, though if you turn off data, it is a battery sipper, but that is not a best solution for everyone.
IMO, for the typical person that does not demand the bleeding edge, CM7 is the way to go. You get solid performance, great battery life, and all the benefits of a CM build.
