Next OTA in November? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I heard from somewhere (but don't remember where) that T-Mobile will be issuing an OTA update some time November to open up the wifi calling feature, is that right? Can someone confirm that?
Also, will that OTA be making an update to the existing firmware or will it be completely wiping out the existing system and flashing a brand new one?
Reason I ask is because I'd very much like to keep the root that I have right now with the "Voodoo OTA RootKeeper" app written by supercurio, but that app is only going to work if the OTA is an update, not a complete override.

a bit early, considering the phone just came out less than a month ago...
the next OTA will most likely be ICE 4.0
my guess Feb 2012

There is an update coming I think Nov 16 or something like that to bring us WIFI calling, but that's it for now.
This phone is a Beast..

i thought it was november 11

The 13th was what was quoted in earlier post as far as I can remember. Who really knows though. Should be coming soon though.

i don't count that OTA as an actual update, it's rather an OTA app install
similar to what we can do from Android Market web to install apps to our phones
just this is Tmo sending the app to our phones via OTA

I also read that its the 13th. I at least hope that Samsung would fix the lockscreen issue that a few user are facing. Luckily since I've been rooted on custom roms this hasn't happened to me. Although it did on the stock unrooted rom.

the update on the 13 is only for the WiFi calling app AFAIK
they might include some other bug fix, but i doubt they will have anything for the screen optimization

Oopps, yeah I meant the 13th. Lol.

Thanks guys. We'll see how it goes. See what's in there and whether I can preserve root after it.

June 20th update

So Monday I guess there is like a bug fix update to fix the netflix and phantom voice mail that most of us got with the gingerbread update. It annoyed me so much that I switched Roms and am loving my MikG 1.03 Rom. So I do want the netflix back. Will it show up as an ota update on custom Rom or do I wait and get it after someone has posted it as a zip or something.

I'm sure it'll be an OTA but you might as well wait for the rooted version to prevent an un-rootable situation.

I second that...avoid the OTA and the bloatware that comes with it
Those of us who remember the 2.2 OTA fiasco and the days of waiting some users had to do before it could be rooted will know that taking an OTA is, potentially, a trap. Most of the time, not so much, and maybe not even intentionally, but we all know it's possible.
Don't be a lemming. And certainly don't be the first lemming off the cliff.

2.2? The 2.3 update was just as bad, perhaps worse.
And yes, don't take the official OTA, wait for a rooted version of it.

Unlikely. Their announcement was for all newly released devices from that point forward.
I just didn't know if it was going to be a simple tweak or if it would replace the whole operating system. I avoided the gingerbread OTA update so will be doing the same on Monday. Hopefully Tuesday I will be running netflix again.

[Q] 4.24.651.1 maintainence release

Has anyone heard anything about this update? I am wondering if this may be my chance to gain root access by waiting for a rooted version?
I "heard" one person...ONE that says he/she got the OTA. I'm not buying it. Oh well...just waiting for the rooted update, if in fact the OTA even went out.
Can I haz Netflix?

Hello I'm new here and I would like to ask if I should wait for someone to root the 4.22.651.2 or I should just download the new its the 4.24 and forget about rooting my EVO
So the golden rule is of course never take OTA updates. However, I look at it this way. Your already unrooted, and if they find an exploit were still looking at several weeks before it's released so why not see what the new firmware brings.
Im guessin now that this latest OTA is released things may progress, but what the heck do I know.
I got the update this morning.
So what happened? Is this a whole new ROM or just a patch?
i SAW, AND AS SURE AS SNOT IS SLIPPERY, DID NOT INSTALL TILL I KNOW WHAT IT DOES
way to thread necro mate!

Need your advice!!

Since I have my E4GT rooted, is it safe to push the OVA update for signal Los that Spring just pushed out? It's just that I keep getting the notification that I have the update ready to download and it is becoming extremely annoying.

Rule #1 of rooting, never take an OTA. If you want to take it. You must first completely unroot, then accept the OTA. Otherwise wait for a dev to release a rooted version.

I wouldn't really say that's rule #1, probably more like rule #23 or #24... the first like 20 rules mainly include Modding, getting sh*t for free, and banging b*itchs

If you're rooted or running any other system modification, the OTA won't apply to your phone. Even if you try, it will fail and you'll just reboot back to your normal phone. Your best bet is to actually install an EK02-based ROM. If you want to stick to stock with just the new modem and kernel, and keep root, I recommend the UnNamed ROM that was recently posted. It's basically a rooted, debloated stock with CIQ removed.
Basically exactly what I was looking for.
It also includes the latest CWM, making future flashes nice and easy.

There was a trick to keeping it cleared until you reboot when i had my nexus s, but i can't remember what it was. Try searching the the nexus s forums for it. It'll keep you from going insane from clearing it 20times a day.

i have stock non-rooted phone. mine is running 2.3.4
i try and go into settings to update my system and it says i have the most current version. any reason it's not pushing to my phone yet?
any idea what the sprint update included? would it be worth reverting to a stock rom to get it?

Sprint said that its a minor update thats primary fixes are for:
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
Couldn't hurt i guess. But there are a bunch of roms already out there that are using the ek02 update. Just use one of those so you dont have to do double the work.

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

No that was not THE ota but an ota most of the leaks supported ota flash and we will know when the ICS kernel source is released and when you look at your phone and it says there is a firmware update lol
Lol i haven't received an ota on any device since i joined xda
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.
Why would you want the official OTA update when you can wait no more than a day and one of our amazing devs will have it rooted and ready to use like any other leak so far.

According to this, Verizon has approved the 4.4 update, and we should be expecting the OTA rollout "shortly".

I'm debating on taking it or not. It doesn't look like 4.3 Root/S-Off will be happening at all, so I guess at this point, I might as well take it, as there probably won't be another major software overhaul anytime soon.
I'm sure one of our great devs will have a stock rooted Rom available shortly after the ota just like santod did with 4.3

I saw Firewater mentioned, but thought that was just another 4.2 root.

Update is live and rolling out! See my post in the main general thread. My wife is downloading now. I am in SW Missouri. Have fun!
Do we know or suspect anything yet in regard to
1) keeping root through the 4.4 OTA?
2) the negative impact of accepting the OTA on a rooted device running TWRP? I read something today that seemed to indicate that you needed the stock recovery to accept the OTA, so perhaps this is a moot point.
Related Note:
Why do I care if I am rooted? Why don't I just wait and flash a custom Sense 5.5 based on the new OTA firmware when it becomes available? It's interesting - I keep going back to my stock, rooted, original rom after flashing multiple roms available here on XDA, even some very good ones. HTC has done a pretty darn good job with Sense 5, and while I had no qualms leaving 3.6 behind for stock AOSP Android when available, I find myself missing Sense features when I use AOSP or GPE on my One. I've messed around with a couple of Sense custom roms, and I keep returning to the original firmware. I appreciate the ability to remove apps entirely through TiBu, so keeping root is good, and I reserve the ability to flash a custom rom if I get itchy want to, but I look at the fact that we are soon to receive an OTA, and I am torn. I know that it will be likely a matter of hours before someone Santod posts a stock rooted Verizon 4.4, but I've already set mine up exactly the way I wanted it. It's funny, after spending a couple of months not flashing new roms, both on the last month of my Bolt when there was nothing new and in the first month of having the One when 4.3 couldn't be rooted, I got really annoyed at the amount of time I was spending setting up accounts and preferences and mods and whatnot during the last week of flashing custom One roms. /rambling
