I noticed that my speeds were pretty lousy and I remembered a 3G fix for slow speeds from my Evo4G days.
Here is the 3g fix from the evo4g, with the small modifications necessary for the ET4G.
Get your MSL. Easiest way:
download ConnectBot from Market
connect to local
run "getprop ril.MSL" no quotes, case sensitive
After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
Click Edit Mode and enter your MSL
Click Others
Click Multimedia
Scroll down to HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address
Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to 0 (zero)
Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
Reboot (may not be necessary)
Before:
Test 1: 227ms ping / 183kbps down / 164kbps up
Test 2: 104ms ping / 643kbps down / 50kbps up
Test 3: 264ms ping / 208kbps down / 163kbps up
Avg: 198ms ping / 344kbps down/ 125kbps up
After:
Test 1: 207ms ping / 410kbps down / 209kbps up
Test 2: 157ms ping / 725kbps down / 132kbps up
Test 3: 219ms ping / 260kbps down / 365kbps up
Avg: 194ms ping / 465kbps down/ 235kbps up
As you can see, the speeds are still not fantastic, but from a percentage perspective there was a huge improvement.
The sample set is certainly small enough to not prove anything, but it didnt break anything on my ET4G over the past day and I had it set this way on my Evo4G for a year without issue.
For those of you brave/desperate enough to try, let us know what your before and afters look like
I spent a few minute trying to find the OP to give him credit, but all I could find was a dupe by AvaLaunchMod. The point is - if this works, don't thank me.

It should also be noted that I was unable to watch youtube videos (via installed app and browser) on 4G without doing this, with this as stock values videos never started playing, removing this makes them start almost instantaneously.

I can confirm, this is the same behavior I have observed on my phone.

Anytime... YouTube on 4G worked fine on my old EVO 4G, so I assumed it was something wrong with my account on the sprint side of things, ended up spending a good hour on the phone phone with them, then they fed me some bs about account provisioning, after getting transferred back and forth I decided to try the above not knowing if the trick even still worked... Worked like a charm.
Tis did not just fix YouTube, but streaming every type of media over 4g AND 3g minus subsonic (because it runs under a self-signed ssl cert) would play excruciatingly slowly or not at all.
My 3g is not usable in Toledo regardless. 400+Ms ping, 5-10 kb/s download.

Anybody else having this problem? Loads up correctly and everything but won't connect to any stations.
I seem to be having the same problem also.
Me too. On my Evo, when I switched to 2.2 I had this problem. The fix was to toggle wifi while trying to start a station. That fix doesn't work on the Epic. I think this is going to require feedback to the developer.
Drat! This is one I was hoping for.

I heart radio not working for me either.
Do you have Tunein from Radio time. You should definitely check it out it has tons of stations search-able.
I'm thinking the developer has either coded it to only work on WiFi, or made a mistake in the application so it doesn't know how to use 3g or 4g networks to operate.
I use Slingbox and police scanner apps on 3g so I doubt it's an issue with the phone itself.
i had iheartradio connect to a station ONE time, ever on my epic. i've heard its a terrible app and clearchannel never fixes, updates it. and whats worse is a like a clearchannel station which cant be pulled up on tunein or other apps. bogus....
it doesnt work on wifi or 3g for me and nothing fixes. and i get stream podcasts on other apps while on 3g or wifi no problem, def the app.
I have it working WiFi only on an Epic. Strange...
My understanding is that this really an issue of a proxy server inserted by Sprint to filter our internet traffic. Instructions for removing the proxy server setting can be found in the "fix for skyfire" thread (my apologies for not posting the link)

I actually found a work around on accident. I knew that it was wifi only. My other post was my suprise with the FC issues. Ill post the work around on my site tomorrow when I'm not on my Epic (which is flashed to Cricket).
So apparently sprint thinks this is the iphone and we want our traffic filtered and/or proxied. This causes skyfire not to work with its flash video feature (and possibly other video/streaming apps, like a radio app I tried). But you can fix it and here's how (credit goes to sdx thread for the moment, will try and post link when back at pc):
##3282#
Multimedia
Input your msl (find it using adb command getprop, look for msl in readout)
Change rtsp proxy to 0.0.0.0 and rtsp proxy port to 0
Enjoy your unfiltered traffic!

you sir, are the man! ran it through, will verify the fix but this is much appreciated
awesome thank you!
iheartradio is kind of sucking on both wifi and 3g. Happens with both the Epic and Droid X. Pandora runs very smoothly though. This leads me to believe that this app isn't that good. Anyone else experience this?
If you apply the fix referenced in this thread, from the skyfire thread, it makes it work, but ya the app itself is kinda crappy, mine buffers every few min even on solid 3g

Im useing the epic 4g touch, I'm rooted on the strongsteve rom. BTW,this rom is freaking sic man,I LOVE,this rom!!!!! Formally the new senzesation wich was very neat and fast.
Any how,im tryin to hook up a ps3 and the strongsteve rom does have the hotspot hack.so it works great. Im getting a nat3 and it wont let me play with other people. HOW can i get to nat2? Has anyone found a way around this? Ive searched high and low. To no avail. Look at my post count. I found out how to root and flash just from reading this site and acs. So i do my homework before i post. Thanx in advance guys
Nat 3 refers to Wireless with a bad connection.
I'd recommend getting Wireless tether and not using the sprint hotspot hack. I believe wireless tether is in the market, but if it's not you can easily find an APK.
Also, I'm not accusing you in anyway, shape, or form. But a lot of idiots can root their phone (I'm not calling you dumb or anything),, and never stop bugging rom devs.

Tried static IP address on ps3? Maybe the limited connection is DNS issue.

I do not use a custom rom. I'm rooted with stock EL29, and Rouge recovery. I also have the ACS AIO mod isntalled (which includes Sprint hotspot mod). I've used this to tether to my laptop and share connection to my Xbox, without any NAT issues.
I'd imagine if that method works for me, then the same setup (minus the laptop as a bridge) would work even better for you on the PS3.

Even if you manage to get to NAT2 the ping times are going to be very high - over 100ms, probably around 130ms or higher. If you're fine with say, shooting at someone and finding out they were 10 feet to the right the entire time then go for it. Otherwise get REAL internet.
As said before, try setting a static IP for your PS3 or using the USB tether function, that might get you to NAT2. Also get something like Droidwall and firewall all programs while tethering. Turn off background data and sync also. Lastly, you might try this and see if it helps also. That's all I got.
Yea, good luck playing a high end video game online with your 3g/4g connection.. It works, but lags. As suggested already, use wifi tether or another tether app and use it wired, not the hotspot or wireless tether. And wouldnt recommend online gaming lol unless you want your scores to drop

What this guy said is very true. 3G is not good for online gaming, especially when the game is unoptimized and expects a broadband connection. I tried playing Quake 3 on my phone over 3g once. It lagged to all hell. The only way to play was to install the dreamcast dialup optimizations.
This is such a terrible idea lol. "Hey guys I'm gonna go play Gears of War over 3G." Lagfest waiting to happen.
3g sucks for online gaming lol. However I played over 4g before and the connection was pretty stable and playable!

Yeah I get better internet speeds over WiMax than I do with my :"15mbps" internet at home. Just the ping was way higher, which is really what matters in most online video games.

When I try to update my data profile (because of VERY slow 3G speeds on my E4GT converted to Boost) I get "The profile update could not be completed. Error: Unknown error". Sometimes, I also get the Error 67, that my Sprint data username and password are incorrect. The E4GT is on a stock GB ROM.
The 3G symbol and arrows take several seconds to appear after I take the phone out of airplane mode, sometimes requiring a restart, and even then, once they appear, they sometimes stay greyed out even though apps are asking for data. When the arrows do go green and orange to indicate active data transfer, it's VERY slow, almost 1x like.
Also, sometimes, far far more often than my Galaxy S1, the signal bars will drop from very good signal (full or almost full) to half or to almost none, then come back up.
'
In testing my 3G connection speed with the Ookla Speedtest.net app right now, my first test got a 962ms ping, a download of 121kbps, and an upload of 152kbps. Two further tests resulted on "network communication issues) with the 3G icon's arrows being greyed out. It was on the Witchita, KS server. I could not get it on the San Francisco server that my Galaxy S1 tested on, as the listbox to choose the server would not scroll to server more than about 1,000 KM away.
For reference, in the same spot, my Sprint/Samsung Galaxy S1 (on Boost, with the same account that's now on the E4GT - Neither is on the network at the same time as the other) scores thus: 126ms ping, a download of 470kbps, and an upload of 797kbps. It was on a local (to me, as in, in my city) server, San Francisco.

Thanks. I saw the first thread you linked (In fact, that's how I got my OG Epic onto Boost) and did use it (and others) to get my S2 onto Boost. But where in there do you see talk of resetting the radio?
As far as the second thread, I haven't done those tweaks on my OG S1, and it gets MUCH faster data than this S2, so it must be something else.

I fixed the problem. Here's what I did, just in case someone else's phone experiences the same symptoms.
-from the dialer, type ##3282# ...
-click EDIT and type your MSL code
-select EVDO from the menu
-I waited about 3 seconds while the signal bars and the 3G icons disappeared ... then I waited another couple of seconds for the icons to re-appear
-then I pressed the back button until I was back in the Home screen
NOTE: I didn't change any settings during this procedure, the 3G restored itself just by entering and exiting this menu
It looks like the radio resets during this procedure and everything restores back to normal. It's interesting that updating the Profile and the PRL did not help, even though the radio resets itself after performing said updates.

I have not set a PRL. The only thing I tweaked was to remove the Sprint proxy in ##3282, though this did not help my speeds. When I bought the phone it had a bad ESN, so I never activated it on Sprint, only on Boost.

I tried a one click back to EL29 (Gingerbread) last night since I read that I must be on a GB ROM to install CWM and proceed from there. No change in speeds, still have the error 67 registration failure.
Further, I rolled my OG Epic 4G back to stock so that I could get at the dialer codes and get it recognized in QPST, read its settings and saved them to a file, then opened up my E4GT in a window beside it. I then duped all the M.IP and PPP Config settings. I also checked the NAM settings to make sure they agreed.
No luck, I'm still having the same issues, while my OG Epic 4G is not.
okay i had perfect 3g connection before i had youtube streaming fast and webpages loading really fast. Now my 3g is no bueno i have connection time outs and slow downloads speeds and buffering is all i get when trying to watch youtube over 3g. So what ive done so far
First i went straight back to stock and factory resetted everything on Gingerbread and did my OTA official updates than did update prl and profile in settings status update but my data connection over 3g is still slow so i did the next thing
##72786# SCRN reset
##3282# (checked all my settings) Device ip says 0.0.0.0 dont know if thats right the other info dont know if thats right either only able to VIEW and EDIT seperate fields one at a time
##MSL#(even put in a new MIEID number from sprint)
then onstart up hands free activation is running sucessfully it updates prl and check for firmware.I then open up sprint zone to chck voice and data both are green however there is a message of an very important profile update available please click here to have full coverage of your data so i click it and i get error cant update profile please try again later. So i keep trying and eventually it updates and says settings have been applied updating content. when i reopen the sprint zone voice and data turn green but the darn profile update for full data services is still there. So i power off pull battery and continue getting same results. The data profile isnt sticking even when it says its been updated. My 3g internet is still slow. Ive also done factory resets from the recovery menu.Sprint even re-pushed my connection off on then pulled battery to see if signal issues were an issue.
so then i do ##rtn# but still the same results. I have tried different modems as well to see if that was the case but no cigar.
Im currently on FH13 ICS 4.0.4 Official stock sprint. the sprint tec support suggest me to go into a store for further troubleshooting cause thats all they can do however i think theres more i can do here just need a little help. I know theres a bunch of more menues i can enter the codes are from this website below. I hope someone can help me with specific correct configurations in the data profile section because this phone doesnt give you the option to reset to default in your data menu just edit and view. Thank you in advanced

Thier wasnt any outage on my network or construction over here either
Don't pay attention to it's a bug in Sprint Zone it always will say there's an update. Update PRL and Profile in Settings and you're good. About speed maybe a network problem in your area it happens to me yesterday PRL Update failing and eventually updated after a few hours also speeds went back I called Sprint and indeed it was a tower problem in my area.
They will tell you there's not outage if no one is reporting. It happens a lot here in PR and when I pass by the tower in Hatillo there are workers on the tower. Lol they know nothing about their own towers.

Being that it's Sprint, more than likely it's just their horrible service. If you call them they will probably just give you an excuse like a tower down or something. I have constant issues with their data speeds and signal and this what they always tell me.. .

this cant be right though because im using 3g right now to write this post shouldn't i be unable to reach through with these results?
i ran a busybox ifconfig and got the results i should have no packets lossed maybe i entered the ip wrong or its one of those loop traces idk it said ip so thats what i used in landroid regardless still got good 3g any tec want to fill the slots for me please thanks.

Ok, here is my final conclusion and we can hopefully put this to rest, at least for some but hopefully many. Kal-El7 and myself spent quite awhile trying to figure out why tethering has suddenly stopped working for so many people. This may or may not be a solution for you in particular but it's good knowledge for those of you being affected or would be affected by this.
It appears T-Mobile has greatly expanded its detection of browser user agent clients. I can't seem to type just anything in a browser user agent spoofer. I used to be able to. Now it seems you must have a legitimate browser or you get the upsell. This has been my problem as of late and we couldn't figure out what was going on until we started ruling everything out. Oh, and make sure you don't use any Google web pages when testing user agents because apparently Google pages don't trigger the upsell page to appear (I think this has since changed and you may get the upsell). You can visit the following page for a comprehensive list of user agents:
http://useragentstring.com/pages/useragentstring.php
This is the string I use as my agent in Firefox using the Add-on User Agent Switcher 0.7.3:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)
In Chrome, install the extension 'User Agent Switcher' and then select 'Internet Explorer 7' as your user-agent.
Update: 07/20/2013
All this time and only now do I realize I didn't even mention what ROM I'm using. DOH! I'm using Tweaked 2.3 (as of 08/15: Tweaked 2.4.1) with default kernel and no additional mods or tweaks. You can use the built in tethering but I prefer to use a tethering app for additional features not available stock.
Update: 08/15/2013
I've had requests about the tethering app I use so I'll outline exactly what app I'm using and what settings I use:
ROM: Tweaked 2.4.1
App: Android-wifi-tether 3.3-beta2
URL: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com
If you're using Tweaked 2.3+ ROM (and probably other ROMs). DO NOT change APN options within Android settings as it is not necessary.
Make sure these settings are checked or unchecked in the tethering app settings:
Change Device-Profile = Samsung Galaxy S3
Change Setup-Method = Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd = Checked
WiFi-driver reload = UNCHECKED

LOL, this is funny! I used Dolphins Custom User Agent feature and put Windows IE user agent string in there and immediately got the tethering upsell page on my phone. So I guess this means the sky's the limit as long as we use a whitelisted user agent. Good stuff!

you sure about this?
i found that tether stopped because of roll out of LTE in my area. so i had to use fast.tmobile apn instead of the epc.tmobile.com and change my apn type from IPv4 to IPv4/IPv6 and that was all.
here's my post on tweaked thread

Funny things is that I can trigger up sell text message without tethering and with wifi OFF. When I download videos from YouTube using tubemate and choosing high resolution videos to be downloaded, I receive up sell sms and data being blocked for use with tubemate, but still works with "regular" YouTube app.

My apn protocol is greyed out. Can't change it. Anybody know why?

Yes, I'm sure. I can use LTE while wifi tethering just fine as well. I'm using Tweaked 2.3 ROM and I do not need to turn on the tethering apn options in settings. I am using the latest android-wifi-tether for root app found here:
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_3-beta2.apk
As long as I properly spoof my user agent I'm good to go. Been watching Hulu in HD on my desktop and used up 30gig over LTE. Life is good.

I don't tether at all, but hit about 6GB per month on my phone , and I get the up sell text message 2/3 times per cycle. The last one always states that tethering has been blocked.

You get that message without even turning on the Wi-Fi hotspot or USB tethering at all?

yep get it every month, I was curious as to what it was actually till I read this thread. I don't tether or turn on hotspot. Maybe they look at the volume of data, and assume I am using a PC

Not really sure on that one. I've only received that when actually triggering it doing the obvious. This is the first I've heard about that as a random occurrence.

Tethering stopped working for me since LTE became active in my area. However, I can still tether using the User Agent spoof, but I never like using it because it restricts me from streaming netflix on my browser. The only way I can get around this is by rolling back to 4G APN settings and changing Network mode from LTE/4G/3G/2G to 4G/3G/2G. Now my tethering is working just fine.

Copy/Paste this user agent string exactly as it appears below into your agent spoofer and report back if you can use Netflix. Working for me.
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)

I am not quite sure why this is so constantly debated.
The fact of the matter is that changing your user agent does ABSOLUTELY nothing to hide your tethering. When you transfer data (more specifically data packets) over ANY network, those packets have very distinct packet headers. ALLLLLL they need to do is look at those packet headers and see the peculiar and distinct format for an uplink, and you are caught.

I definitely use a minimum of double that, around a dozen gigs per month. I have never seen this message.
Work related data exchange.

Well, it seems they don't employ that method.

T-Mobile cant see a single thing I do on either my phone or when tethered. All, and I do mean ALL of my data ( headers and data ) , runs into my home server over an rsa encrypted tunnel Granted, I dont need to tether often, but I do like my data privacy. Apparently T-Mobile is allowed to look deep into your data packets per the contract you signed with them. Doesnt that make you feel good? I mean ... if any of you are like me, I use my phone for online banking, RDP / VNC into government servers, FTP / RDP / SSH into my home servers, managing my personal website , etc.. Security is a big issue.
I also highly recommend against using public proxies as they will have full access to anything you do. It takes about 10 minutes to set up a home tunnel provided you are even the least bit tech savy ( which if you are on XDA and using roms, means you have some skills ). Granted you will want a halfway decent home ISP. The dedicated server can be as old as a p2 with 256Mb ram. Doesnt take much.

Very nice. Security is always a good thing. Odd though that if they can see all that, why aren't they contacting me or sending me a threatening letter when I tether with no tunneling or VPN use? You would think after 200 gig over the last several months they would have said something to me by now. I mostly watch Hulu and Netflix in HD and that adds up in GB's quick. I very occasionally use BitTorrent but use BTGuard to encrypt its use. Still, no issues except for the occasional upsell page when I have a user agent spoofing issue. I think they use very basic detection schemes but elude to something more advanced. Proof is in the pudding as they say.
