when i first click wipe dalvik cash before i say yes it says E:unknown volume for path [/sd ext] (i assume this is for apps2sd). then i say yes and it says dalvik cash wiped. (i dont use apps2sd)
after trying to wipe dalvik seems im getting stuck at the boot logo.
i clicked show logs to make sure and it says.
Code:
I: checking for extendedcommand...
I: skipping execution for extendedcommand. file not found...

is it only trying to wipe my sd dalvik cache? or does it autally work.
no one knows why wiping dalvik freezes my device at bootscreen?
Dalvic-cache partions seems to be wrong or missed up. It can't seem to find the location. It needs to get fixed before you use it.

i had this problem once! in order to fix it you have to: put your SD card in an adapter, plug it into your comp, backup everything on the card you dont want to lose. after that, put your sd card back into your device, boot into recovery, go to mounts and storage, and format your sd card, AND your internal memory, it sucks that you have to lose everyhing on your internal, unless you back that up too, but this works 100%.
MODS: if you'd like to sticky this please do. Ive seen multiple situations of this problem, and this fix works every time! thanks!

i was trying to theme my phone, when i pushed it to the phone, it crashed, and got stuck in a boot loop... i then booted it into recovery, and flashed my old rom back, but now i'm stuck at the white screen with the htc logo, i can still get into the clockwork mod recovery...
my question is how do i get back into my rom?
i have tried to wipe everyting, and flash again, nothing...
if you flash a Rom that needs a ext2 partition, you have to make one on your SD.. Try to connect your sd to a PC and format it properly (better with linux or macos.. Win does no support ext2 partitions!!). Else, use a rom with old A2SD, NOT A2SD+, like LeeDroid.. it should reboot!! Then with Rom Manager format again your SD and flash any rom you like!
PS. remember: FULL WIPE!!! from Clockwork menu "mounts and storage", format ALL partitions except the "sdcard" one. I mean BOOT, SYSYEM, DATA, CACHE, and wipe Dalvik cache too.. Then reflash

i did not chage the rom, i was on auraxsense, which has system RW, so i just pushed the framwork-res.apk but the phone crashed, and now it's stuck...
so i did have a ext3 partition, and it was working fine... so i guess it has something to do with the framework-res broke something?
and i will try formatting
edit: did not help formmating and then flashing...
yeah, maybe.. but system RW is not REAL rw.. it has a feature that you can use with some apps, but you still can't write to /system partition yet.. For your wills, you have to "cook" your ROM again, an app like themepro would help you.. I never try that, because i don't have many time to spend with it, but seems to work fine!! Download your rom, extract with Themepro the files you would like to modify, do your stuff, replace it then sign and repack it. it has to work.. i guess

well i used themepro, but when i then pushed it back, it tells you that you need to be in recovery, well i thought "whatever, i have R/W" but no i guess i have to flash a stock rru
try another rom..
did you try to push it again from recovery??
EDIT: you have to modify framevork-res, then repack with themepro, then flash the entire rom, not only the file..

ok, but you may try another to exclude that is not the rom.. but it is possible that you have corrupted the original rom file, so it would help you to download it again, and in an EMPTY desire, reflash the new rom.. it helped me sometimes, i had flash a wrong rom (not for desire) and all my tries to reboot it did not work.. i have reformatted ALL partitions (boot, system, data, cache, sdcard, sd-ext) wiped dalvik, EVERYTHING, and with USB mount function of Clockwork put rom into SD and then.. BINGO.. hehehe..

I then wipe data/factory reset in recovery mode

There is a thread in the dev section on how to setup custom mtd partitions. Basically you just assign memory where you want it. If you want stock roms you should assign the normal mtd setup (given in mtd partitions thread). Oh, you'll need s-off though. There is a guide for that too in the dev section. Its actually sticked at the top. Glad i could help

Alright i ran into this small but simple instruction and it worked so now im up and running. Thanks for everyone's help:
Code:
1- open the update-cm-9-20120423-nightly-p4wifi-signed.zip
2- open META-INF >com>google>android.
3- copy the updater-script to your desktop.
4- download notepad ++ from here http://notepad-plus-...oad/v6.1.2.html
5- after installing notepad ++ right click on updater-script that you previusly copy in your desktop and open with notepad ++
6- delete the first line
7- save it
8- delete the one from update-cm-9-20120423-nightly-p4wifi-signed.zip and copy the one from your desktop
9- close it and done
The first lines there are to check whether your device is really a marvelc, which it fails, because maybe your devices has different parameters. Therefore what you did is just to remove those lines and remove the verification.

Hey it worked though , now my wife's phone is way ahead of mine . Another thing is i didn't encounter any of the bugs that the post mentions.
Okay, this error have been annoying me the whole day. I have a Xperia SL rooted with .55. Everything was working completely great. Today I just tryied to restore a backup with CWM recovery, and I got this error.
Code:
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p12
I can't wipe data and I can't install any MOD or ROM properly because of that.
The most strange thing is that I don't even have a ext sd slot. I don't know why I'm getting this error.
I've been searching for fixes and all I got was completely random fixes from people that mostly doesn't even know how did they fix it. Even though, those doesn't work for me.
* I figured out that when I go on FORMAT /DATA, after that, I can wipe data, and I can (re)install the room again without any error. The problem is after I reboot the system, the error comes back, and I need to format /data if I want to install anything again without errors.
Try flash .ftf with flashtool. Wipe all.

why you wanna try to format in PC? if u format (regularly) in PC , it will only format your sdcard (mnt\sdcard). the mmcblk0p12 is the \system partition. u need to somehow format it first, via fastboot, or try via cwm to format \system.
and give more explanation bout the condition of your phone.. ie: rom, kernel, locked/unlocked bootloader.
i too, once, messed up my \data partition (which it's mmcblk0p14). i fixed that by using fastboot

Like i said, it's a. 55 rooted with stock Rom. Boot loader unlock alowed: yes. I tryed every kind of fix in cwm already and nothing works.
Something I never tryed is via fastboot. How do I proceed with that?
Sorry, my android life just started yesterday, I don't have much knowledge
EDIT: Ok I solved. Actually it's not like a fix, it's just like putting a silver tape to handle the problem. For some reason I'm able to advance restore system backup via CWM recovery. Every time that I do that, my CWM recovery is fully functional again, i can install mod, rom, etc. But, when I reboot into system again, the problem comes back, but I can still use my android without any problems, I just can't install anything via CWM recovery. So basically, now, every time that I want to install something in recovery, first I need to advanced restore system, and than install the rom, mod or whatever. Than I backup again in case I want to install anything else in the future, to repeat the same procedure with the last backup.
I was just having some problems when I was trying to restore the system with a md5 missing error... something like that. I solved this problem by just creating a file.txt in the backup folder and than renamed it to nandroid.md5. Magically it was fixed.

Hello All,
I have an emergency! My wife and I are abroad and were taking pictures using her Galaxy S4 (T-Mobile) running a custom ROM and all of a sudden, it totally died (boot-loop)! I tried clearing the cache/dalvik, fixing permissions, etc. in TWRP but could not get it to reboot! Then I tried using the file manager in TWRP to at least get all of our honeymoon pictures transferred from internal_sd camera to external_sd but it just says FAIL every time.
For some reason, her phone also recorded 1/2 of the pictures on her external SD and the other half (the more important half) on the internal. I need help finding a way to transfer these files over from the internal to the external or to the PC! Please help!
Here's what I've tried:
TWRP File Manager - Failed
TWRP Terminal Command - [navigate to internal camera directory] cp /external_sd/Downloads:
Results:
/data/media/0/DCIM/Camera # cp /external_sd/Downloads
BusyBox v1.21.0 -jb bionic (2013-02-26 19:19 +0100) multi-call binary
Usage:
cp
[OPTIONS] SOURCE.... DEST
Copy SOURCE(s) to DEST
-aSame as -dpR
-R, -rRecurse
-d, -PPreserve symlinks (default if -R)
-LFollow all symlinks
-HFollow symlinks on command line
-pPreserve file attributes if possible
-fOverwrite
-iPrompt before overwrite
-l, -sCreate (sym)links
Wipe Cache/Dalvik/System + Reinstall ROM - never gets passed splash Samsung Galaxy S4 Splash Screen (tried wiping caches after installation, no difference). It does note that it's unable to mount \data ! When I try to manually mount Data using TWRP it doesn't work! I don't know if it makes a difference that TWRP labels to Data and the ROM tries to mount data (lower/uppercase difference).
Please help me my friends! My wife is going paranoid that we will have lost all of our great pictures from the majority of our honeymoon.
Sincerely,
-Taxmaster
Try using TWRP 2.5.0.2 if you're currently using 2.6. I myself was having problem with the latest version of TWRP.

If it's on bootloop, and nothing else works, you will have to get a computer, download odin, download the stock TAR, and flash it back to stock. or, if you have made a backup with TWRP, then restore that backup.
Oh, and congrats!

I'm not worried about getting the phone working again period, I'm worried about saving her photos. If I use ODIN and stock TAR, it will wipe her data which is exactly what I'm trying to prevent.
I really hope someone can help! We really appreciate it! (Oh and thanks for the congrats on the nuptials!)

Just try flashing a recovery through Odin and then reflashing the same rom. I'm pretty sure the pictures will still be there.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Advanced wipe- system, data, cache, dalvik
Reinstall ROM and kernel if needed

This would delete the data and hence completely do the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish ... but thanks anyways.

So you suggest flashing CWM perhaps? If it makes a difference, I've noticed that when I flashed TWRP on this phone that it's never been able to make a recovery file (it always says fail). Perhaps CWM might help.
But installing it via ODIN wouldn't overwrite the data? Are you sure? Can anyone else verify this? We're talking about my honeymoon photos here which are supposed to last a lifetime (not to mention we haven't showed them to anyone in our family yet!).
Thank you!

Because you're using TWRP, wiping system/data/cache/dalvik and re-flashing wouldn't clear your internal storage. Your pics would be fine. The down-side is that all the user apps you have downloaded will be deleted. The only way you would end up deleting your pics is if you wiped your storage partition as well, so make sure you don't select "Internal Storage" on the advanced wipe screen.
Flashing a stock image via Odin would overwrite your internal storage partition and would not be advisable. You could, on the other hand, flash a recovery via Odin and the partition would be fine.

Crisis averted! Turns out that the SDCard was full, so the phone reverted storage back to internal. I found this out once I put the SDCard into another phone and saw the storage was maxed out, so I copied it all to a computer, cleared it, and then I used TWRPs file manager to copy/paste and voila, it worked!
Thank you all so much for your help! At least now I have an excuse to delete a bunch of old crap, install a new recovery (so it'll work), and use a more updated ROM ! Thank you!
