Signal and grip ... Help please. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I am thinking about sending this phone back.
The reason is that when I hold my phone like normal to make a call the signal is very low .. But in the same area if I hold the phone up and down with only two fingers at the bottom of the phone sides the signal will double or more... Like 18% to about 48%.
I am doing this using the open signal app on the market.
I have heard the radio is weak on the phone but I don't know if it I'd normal to this extent.
If anyone could test this out access tell me if it does or does not happen with their phone that would be great thanks.
Also .. I have no other issues with the screen and it seems like I am getting quadrants as high as people
that have added the universal shot while I haven't done anything to enhance it. Which is why i'm hesitant to send it back without knowing if this is common with this phone.

i can confirm i do not see this behaviour
that's weird
it almost sounds like the antennae-gate issue from old iphone4 LOL

I'm not experiencing this issue either. If you have weak signal at your location, you can contact T-Mobile and ask if they can send you a signal boost device. To get it, it does require a 2 year contract. If you believe it is a signal problem, call tech support (1-877-296-9933) and ask if they can send you a replacement.

I don't see any kind of problem like that what you been having on your device may be it might be a bad Device ?

I had a slight signal problem with my first phone. The phone would drop calls even when it showed full coverage. After replacing the phone a week ago, everything has been fine. Just swap it out for another.

That's what I was afraid of ... Seems like everything else on this phone is great compared to what others have said about screen and quadrants as well. Would hate to give this up if it turns out to be common.
Thanks for the replies so far.

something you can try before you exchange the phone.
turn off NFC in settings
then power off the phone, take out the battery
hit the power button, to eat up the last of the juice
put battery back in, battery cover on
power the phone back up, and run some test for your signal just as you described on the 1st post
let us know of the results

I'm in your shoes. I drop calls every day at least 3-4 times. Doesn't matter where I'm located. I have full coverage (4 bars) and still drop calls.
I'm exchanging my phone in the morning for a new one. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

I may have to try this myself. Why would NFC cause the call signal to be sporadic?

I have similar issues. Just got the phone 2 weeks ago. I drop calls at least 5-6 times a day.
Even with full signal, I make a call, it drops maybe 20 seconds into the call. I call back, again it drops.
I even had a customer yell at me "can you call me back with a f%#$king phone that works?!"
very embarrassing.

How old is your Sim card? Hopefully you used the new one that came with it.
If you did use the new Sim card then call Tmobile and ask them to cancel the location and file a service request ... You will need to be on another phone though.

Are you within your 14 day return period? If so, take your phone back. My first GS2 did the exact same thing. I returned mine yesterday. The new one doesn't drop calls at all.

[Q] simcard problem. need help!

i've had a desire (normal version) since the day it was released. but when the HD came out, i just had to have it.
in the beginning everything was just fine with my HD.
but since a little while, the simcard is acting weird.
yesterday afternoon i put the simcard in (had to use a different phone for a day), and everything worked fine. no problems at all.
this morning i woke up, and i looked at the screen of my HD.
no reception, and a little warning telling me to set the time and date.
(it has done this before, it started about a week after i got it).
i try calling, but the phone says "no simcard".
i remove the backcover, and there was my simcard. still in perfect position.
i even tried a little piece of paper to really squeeze the card in.
i took out the simcard, cleaned it (just in case), put it back in and turned off the phone.
a minute later, i turned on the phone again and everything was fine again.
but it's just a matter of time before the phone will say that there is no simcard.
it does this almost every other day, and it's really really annoying.
(it does this to with other simcards)
if i put my simcard in another phone, i don't have any problems, only the HD does this.
can somebody please help, because it's really annoying if i have to restart the phone every other day because it won't recognize the simcard anymore.
If a hard reset (back to factory defaults) doesn't fix this then I'm afraid it sounds like hardware fault and you'd need to get the phone replaced.
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
i can't get it replaced (i've been told).
a few weeks ago the phone fell and the screen broke. the screen has been replaced but i've been told that i don't have any warranty on it because of the repair.
the thing i don't understand is, why work perfectly for a whole day (sometimes even more) and without warning all of the sudden the simcard isn't recognized anymore.
with hardware faults the fault should be there all the time, not just after a certain amount of time.
Hardware fault can still be intermittent just like a mechanical fault.
How did the hard reset go?
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
i used this guide for the hard reset: http://www.hard-reset.com/htc-desire-hd-hard-reset.html
that was about a month or two ago.
the phone still acts as if there is no simcard sometimes.
the hard reset didn't do anything. (except for losing some data...).
Then if it does this with every SIM card you tried and the SIM cards all work fine in other phones (ruling out SIM card issue) I don't know what else it could be other than hardware.
Software issue can discounted as you have done a reset.
How long getting it back from screen replacement? If not long I'd blame that and insist they repair it.
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
i had to sent it twice actually.
the first time they had it for about 2 weeks because they had to wait for parts.
then i got it home, but the glue for the screen didn't stick well enough (1 corner got loose) so i called them and they fixed it for free.
this time they had the phone for about 2 weeks again.
but how the hell am i gonna explain why the simcard holder was affected by the replacement of the screen?
You don't.
The phone has to be pulled apart to change screens and anything could have happened.
If it was only a week ago you got phone back or less I'd just contact them and say "ever since I got phone back this has happened" and ***** till they agree.
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
made the call, the're gonna look into it.
so i'll have to sent my phone again, and wait for the're findings.
they first check if it has to do with previous repairs, if not it's not covered by the warranty.
*sigh...*
been sending it up and down for the last couple of months...

yeah... i found that one out the hard way.....
well, i just got my phone back. the statement they included says "no error found".
those goddamn f%$#^&% probably didn't even test it out.
it doesn't act up immediatly, it usually happens after a day or so.
maybe they couldn't find any hardware problems, but i know it's still acting up.
i'll just wait till tomorrow to see when the phone stops working.
Just call them back and point out it is intermittent and often takes 24-48 hours after inserting a SIM for it to fail again. Just keep at them.
yeah i will.... on monday.
if i call now, they'll say "send it to us, and we'll have a look".
they don't work in the weekend, so i might as well wait till monday and have a few days with me precious phone.
i haven't seen it in such a long time, i'm starting to miss it...my precious... ;-)
but on the serious side, i really wander what the problem could be. i just don't understand why it suddenly stops recognizing my simcard.
i'm not able to fix it, but i'm still curious.

Sporadic menu capacitive button

at completely random times during the day my menu button would trigger for a good 5 seconds sometimes and then freeze ALL my capacitive buttons. can anyone think of a possible solution?
i'm guessing its a hardware defect but i wouldn't know how to handle sprint if that's the occasion

I had problems with unresponsive capacitive buttons on my og Epic 4G. It was a manufacturing defect and was covered by the manufacturer's warranty. I'd try to bring it back to a Sprint store with a repair facility and make a warranty claim against Samsung.

Mine has JUST started doing that over the past two days... I thought it was due to a Kernel I flashed, or a faulty APK. I ONLY experience the problem while using Handscent.
hmm i see.. well 1) my buttons respond fine its only when the menu button spazzes out that all the buttons freeze which a quick toggle of the power button would fix but i could wait outside a sprint store for it to happen. i would have to return to stock everything right?
2) do individual apks have capability to mess with the buttons outside of an app? i'm pretty sure its occurred throughout multiple apps but ill past more specific attention to when they occur
thanks guys any other input would be appreciated greatly, i do love this phone very much but this glitch is eating away at me

That is the same issue I have; the menu activates, then the entire phone is unresponsive (except the power button, which puts the screen to sleep as it should) for a few seconds.
Although, like I said, I've only noticed it while inside Handscent and trying to enter type a message. I can play games for an hour and never experience it.
It *IS* rather annoying.
I've had this issue for a while and only ever noticed it once I started flashing different ROMs. In my case I can happen in any app (I don't really play games so can't say for sure about that). Email, market, whatever I get it once in a while. Like others said pushing the power button off and on fixes it. If I also wait like 5 secs and don't try to keep pushing buttons it works too.
To those of you having this issue, see if it coincides with going into a low signal area. When I was doing LOS testing in a known dead spot, I noticed this happening as soon as I started getting really low signal. Check that out and please report back. I didn't say anything at the time (it was a while ago now) because I thought I had some user error going on

Man, I am glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. It's the wierdest thing... Eager to find a fix!
i know there was a thread about this months ago but it died because no one had a solution, this time around looks more promising!
the only rom i tend to find myself running is Calk`s and i don't believe i had any issues while i was running miui for a while but eventually i had to go back to calk because i needed 4g but it might just be an issue within the twiz framework or something
John your theory is interesting because i tend to get the issue largely when i'm at home and i have horrible service at home (i'm in the basement) and the past day I've been on the road a lot and ive yet to experience it so you might be on to something, just need some more people to test to confirm

For me, the problem started just over the past two weeks or so. I never had an issue before... Happens when I'm on Wifi as well as off Wifi.
I'm thinking I may just take it in for a warranty exchange. I've begun noticing it occasionally in other applications as well. Not the random menu button activation, but suddenly the capacitive buttons will simply be non responsive for 2 or 3 seconds.

it seems like thats the best way to go about it. frankly, im too lazy to backup all my stuff, unroot, reset the flash counter and then deal with samsung/sprint lol.
results from a couple days testing John's theory: its definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong (i still get 1 or 2 presses from the menu button then it stops as opposed to several presses then all the buttons freeze). i dont know where to go from here... help

I have been looking at this myself. It only happens to me on the edge of a dead zone. If you have to press the softkeys multiple times in a good signal area, I would take your phone to get checked out. Some OG Epics had this issue too

I agree, but it would be best if you got it fixed by Sprint. Unrooting can be done by closely learning from this video(here, credits to QBKing77).
Mine seems to to it more often in low signal area's or switching back and forth from my airave. Havent really noticed it with full signal or on 4g but only time will tell. No root........

You shouldn't have to send it anywhere. This should fall within the manufacturer's 1 year warranty, which Sprint will honor with a $35 charge... They will (normally) order you a replacement phone and you will swap your old phone when the new one arrives... You shouldn't be without a phone at all.
I'm planning on visiting the Sprint store tonight to start the process, in fact.
After I flash back to stock.

how did it go for you? did you reset your binary counter before you exchanged it?
it sucks that WE pay the $35 charge to replace a hardware defect WE weren't responsible for..
Same thing here.
It's definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong as has been said before.. Could be in an elevator or basement for example.. The power button solves the issue but the problem usually starts again if the service is still bad.
Just to report...

Please do, and keep us apprised. Iv'e just learned to live with it, but would love to know what's going on.
Just to clear everything up, here's how it works:
You have a Samsung device with a one-year limited warranty. If you'd like, you can send your phone to them for a week, pay for shipping, and maybe get a replacement.
You have a Sprint product. If you'd like, you can take it in for repair (which takes about an hour), and a technician will either fix it - or order you a replacement (which has one-day shipping). If you have Total Equipment Protection, all repairs are free. If you don't, all repairs are $35.
The only time you would have to spend more than that is if you have a phone that is damaged beyond repair (liquid damage, cracked screen, damaged motherboard, etc) - and that would be a deductible of $100 to order a new phone through the insurance company, Assurion.

Sound suddenly stops while in call

I'm having an issue while talking on my phone where in the middle of talking the sound cuts out usually in between peoples sentences. So when they stop for a second or two I think they are dome talking and then all of a sudden their voice comes back in the middle of a sentence.
I have tried nearly all ROMs for our device and the issue is present on all of them. I have tried all forms of factory resets and Odin back to stock.
It seems that my signal is very inconsistent. I can have full service and not move the phone an inch and drop to 1 bar then back to 3 then lose service and get it back all in a minute.
It doesn't matter which modem I use. All of them have the same issue for me.
WiFi does the same thing depending on how I hold the phone. I typically sit within 5 feet of my router and can watch my signal change.
Any help would be great.
Even though I love my s3 I can't deal with this since I need my phone for work and personal reasons. Just getting fed up and thinking about dumping it if I can't fix it.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
That totally sounds like hardware issue. Have you talked ATT yet about replacing it? The warranty center did that for me my motherboard crashed in my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. It was under the year warranty.

Proximity sensor broken?

Love this awesome phone but as of late the proximity sensor on this note has either broke or is buggy. First started to notice that the red light of the proximity sensor would not turn off. After a while as I make phone calls my screen will turn off but as I put my phone away from my face it doesn't turn back on. This may not seem like a big problem but if I can't have full control of my phone it is rather bothersome. For example I cannot properly end calls or switch to speaker phone or utilize my phone during the call. It is rather annoying talking while keeping the screen on because I end up click all sorts of things while my face is on the phone. Need help in fixing it. Tried rebooting, turning proximity sensor on and off, battery pulls but nothing. It sometimes returns back to normal after a while but due to my line of work I cannot afford to estimate when it's going to work. Any help would be great. I apologize in advance if this issue has already been addressed. Thanks!

I do have a case but I tried taking it off and it still has same symptoms. I also tried turning the settings on and off. Maybe it's the screen protector but my sgp sits right below the sensor so I doubt it's that either.

The funny thing is I brought it in before and magically the tech got it to work again. I was thinking maybe it was the way I was holding it. But I tried holding it with either hand and it still occurs. Hopefully this time I can reproduce it again. I'm fed up trying to figure this out.

Just an update:
I brought it back to my local Sprint store to have the device checked out a 2nd time last week. I was able to reproduce the problem to the CSR and they immediately took it in to get it repaired. Told me to come back in a hour to come pick it up. Hour came up and as I inquired about my phone, the Sprint technician told me there was nothing she could do since it was rooted and simply handed me back my phone without a single explanation. I asked them how rooting a phone physically caused my proximity sensor to not work, and they simply shrugged. I then asked the CSR to please tell me what I can do alleviate this problem and he simply said, "I never rooted my phone before, so I don't know what to tell you". I was shocked because I work in sales and never before have I ever said that to a customer. I decided not to argue even though I know I could have and asked for the manager. I then decided to unroot my phone and go back to stock to see if that would magically fix my problem and of course it didn't.
Today, I went to the Sprint store near my work place, and HOLY COW, it was different. No wait, no line, and when I went to talk to the CSR and technician they were friendly and took the time to try to fix the problem. The tech went to through all the basics, doing a battery pull, hard reset, and even suggested to take off my SGP screen protector (I KNOW! I really didn't want to!). Unfortunately it didn't work, and the CSR told me to come back in a few days so they would order me a new one. Excited to hear that, I then asked them to specify which day and probably not wanting to deal with me anymore, decided to give me a brand new one on the spot. They set everything up and even gave me the box and everything, so now I have an extra charger, cable, and earbuds. It just goes to show how different Sprint procedures are. Both stores were Sprint owned stores, and both had the same technical support yet I was treated so differently.
To anyone having the same problems, please do yourself a favor and just unroot it just in case. I find that some stores will do or say anything to not replace your phone. I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 6 years and I feel that they will still treat you like crap.
i would report the first store for sure

To anyone having the same problems, please do yourself a favor and just unroot it just in case. I find that some stores will do or say anything to not replace your phone. I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 6 years and I feel that they will still treat you like crap.

Brought my phone in to a sprint repair center store. They fixed it by replacing the sensor. Before I left I inspected it thoroughly, they broke the volume rocker and now they're ordering me a new one since they didn't have the grey in stock and back ordered.
Oh wow well at least it goes to show they are aware of the problem and I guess it's better that you will be getting a new phone.

I would bring it in. To me if something is working incorrectly it is every right for you to get an exchange. I mean I paid $300 for this phone, I better get one that works flawlessly.

Thanks!

The reason the red light stays on is because you have smotion on. With smotion the proximity sensor stays on the whole time. If you turn it off the red light will go off. Don't know if that will also fix your other problem. With the smotion on I don't have any issues.

Well after a few hours of work/waiting I am sad to say that I did not benefit from the good customer service you got.
I went in today around 10 and dropped off my phone to be looked at by the Tech, who was not in until 11.
Around 12:15 I got a call (on my wifes phone) and they let me know that the phone would have to be entirely replaced. The tech told me he could not swap one out for me. I asked to speak to a manager.
Manager, "hello this is Matt"
Me: "Hi Matt, (explained issue again) and I was hoping you guys could replace my phone for me. "
Manager: "We don't have any phones available for that, we will have to order one from the depot"
Me: ' Oh, you don't have any note II's at the store?"
Manager: "We do, But they are for new customers and activation's only.
Oh... WAIT WHAT?
Ok ok. I understand that if he isn't allowed to and MUST order them from the depot....BUT HOW ARE YOU STUPID ENOUGH TO SAY THAT?
I have worked in various customer service capacities for most of my life, and here is what he said sounded like to me:
(not a real quote): "Here at Sprint and/or our store new customers and activation's are the priority."
What he should have said: "I am sooooo sorry. I am not allowed to do that, I absolutely would if I could. How about I order one from the depot for you and let you know as soon as I have an arrival date?"
sigh. So after all that, because I don't have TEP (sprints monthly insureance) I have to pay $35 to get a "new device"
They PROMISED me that it would be new and not refurb. So we will see how that works out.
Thank you for patiently hearing (reading?) my rant......

Faint ringing noise

For the last two days I have experienced a faint ringing noise coming from my ear piece. The ring sounds like the phone is ringing but there is nothing that is running or any notifications. I experienced this once on my HTC evo LTE on sprint when I was still with them. The only way to get the noise to stop is to either reset the phone or make a call. It happens at random times. I have searched the Web for answers but got nothing. Anyone experiencing this or know of a fix?

Ha this could be an explanation, but I have read where other HTC ones on Verizon are experiencing this. I also had the one on sprint and never had this problem.

I experienced the same thing sans ear piece a couple of weeks back. A reset was the only thing I could find to get rid of it for me and it hasn't seemed to come back. I was riding passenger in an unfamiliar car about a week after I had just started using my one and took a good 15 minutes trying to hunt down the sound haha.

I had the exact thing happen to me a couple of nights ago. I thought maybe it was caused from being on the charger. I had to restart the phone to get it to stop and haven't heard it since.
Check that the roaming notification is turned off and also check for data notifications. Fixed mine.

I've noticed mine would do it in a low service area. It eventually quit doing it.

I have this problem at least once a day while at work. I've talked to Verizon and HTC over this and each time they act like they've never heard of this problem. It looks like we have narrowed it down to low signal and either trying to connect to a certain band or switching between bands. You can get the ringing to stop by switching your phone to gsm only. I have the app LTE on/off and it has been said that disabling EvDo utilizing only LTE/CDMA resolves the problem. That basically disables your 3G coverage. I will be testing it out this upcoming week.
My one did this when I got a robo call. When I answered the ringing started

Me too + solution
Mine does this too (or at least I believe it's the same thing) seemingly at random. My simple fix is to place a phone call, even to just voicemail, and it goes away right away.
It also must be hardware-related because it would even ring faintly for like 10 seconds after I turned off my One completely. It would then immediately startup when I pressed the power button even without holding it to turn the phone back one.
As a funny side note, I literally spent nearly an hour searching for the noise in my house and wondering why it seemed to be coming from every direction and following me
Only happened to me once though since I've gotten the phone.

If you didn't have fastboot turned off when you restarted the ringing won't stop, your phone doesn't fully shut down on a restart with fastboot enabled.
Took mine back to Verizon and I was outside of my 14 days but they still gave me a brand new one. Went through about three of them getting one without gaps and a good camera. Woke of this morning and this one was ringing too. I am in low service area part of my house where I sleep.

I just got off the phone with HTC and they have started tracking this problem. They asked for the location that it occurs, the MEID #, software version, and baseband #. I would advice everyone who has the problem to call HTC and report it. The more people who call to complain may speed up the resolution to this problem.
if you search for this issue with the DNA it happened with that also.
I reported it on the 3rd day the phone was out. I was driving and using it for Navagation, Pandora, and making a call (My phone didn't like me for a while when I was testing its limits) and it started making the beeping noise.
I agree it appears to either be a low service area (Since I was driving cross country) or the other thing DNA users said is it may be the internal battery temp warning, as mine was blazing hot (Obviously)
The annoying thing about this ringing is that it goes through bluetooth audio. so within pandora you could hear the ringing. A phone call didn't solve it for me. I had to turn off fast boot and shut down for 5 minutes and boot back up.
I'm thinking it has to do with low signal or switch between bands. Everytime it happens I am in the same part of my house where I fluctuate from 3g to 1x to no signal without even moving. My phone was not even being used any of the times it Happened, so I'm not thinking it is a temp issue

that wouldn't surprise me. I am very disappointed with the reception of this phone. I've had sms failures, and dropped calls. Signal seems worse than my note 2. My rezound and kids dna's work great at my house, so this is disappointing. My only guess is that the aluminum body is blocking the antenna.
Bought this on edge and am past my 14 days. Wonder if they would swap for the droid ultra.

My reception is on par with my dads S4 and my moms droid mini. We just live in an area where any kind of cell service is spotty.

HTC is aware of the problem
It's happened to me 3 times in the few weeks I've owned the phone. Spoke with Verizon & they spoke with HTC and told me that they are aware of the issue and looking into a fix. Who knows how long that'll take. For now we're stuck rebooting. Not necessarily a bad thing to reboot every once in a while, tho it'd be nice it I could pick when that time is.....
I can also verify that fiddling with the roaming options doesn't help.
Sure would be nice to be able to install some custom ROMs on this thing. I bet that'd fix it.....If it weren't for my unlimited data plan and the network coverage, I'd be with a carrier that didn't lock **** down so hard.

I've ran into it twice. Happened when I was sleeping once and I woke up and went insane trying to find it. I then figured out it was my phone. Weirdest part about it was the fact that it "Pulsed" so it was hard to find.
