[Q] No free memory with app2sd (InsertCoin 1.1.4) - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody,
I've rooted my HTC Desire and installed the InsertCoin Sense 2.1 CM7 1.1.4 ROM. It works great, but the main resean of rooting my phone is creating more space on internal memory.
So, I've installed Titanium backup and moved my apps to SD. With the 'App2SD' app I can see the apps moved to the SD card. But unfortunately the available space on the phone itself didn't change. So now I'm stuck with 8.41 MB of free internal memory.
Who knows a solution???

recommend you read this
it's long, but hopefully your understanding will be better afterwards

Great, this was exactly what I'm looking for. Now I understand the difference between A2SD+ and CM7. I've installed the latter, hence the internal memory problem. Changing to the A2SD version will probably fix this, but I read a lot about the CM7 being faster than the A2SD.
I'm gonna give it a try!

glad it was useful, also reassuring to hear that you're learning along the way!

I solved the problem and compared to rooting and s-offing the phone, this was really easy. It wasn't necessary to install the A2SD version. I stayed with the CM7 version of Insertcoin because of the speed advantages compared to A2SD.
The trick is to install a new hboot table. The original leaves little space for apps to install. I downloaded a new partition table from alpharev.nl (Bravo CM7 r2). Make sure you pick the PB99IMG file and after downloading rename it to PB99IMG.zip. After checking the checksum, I copied it to the root of SD card on the phone. Switched off the power and went into fastboot (hold power and volume down and navigate to fastboot). There you'll be prompted if you want to install the update. Select yes and the new table was installed in seconds. I rebooted the phone, and without re-installing backups, it worked instantly! Now I have 145 MB free! It sounds like an advertisement, but it wasn't any more difficult than this. No need for using command prompts or android flasher...

[Q] Rooting successful - Now what?

So... After much hesitation (purely because of worry), I finally rooted my Desire. And yes, it went without a hitch.
I do have that app which says "Superuser Permissions".
Running ClockWork mod recovery/rom 2.5.0.7 (I guess).
I have downloaded the major recommended apps for rooted devices, viz. - Root Explorer, Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
I'd like to know what else can be done now...
My phone's memory is down to 20-ish odd Megs. Thanks to updating Adobe, Facebook, GMail, Maps, QuickOffice and installing Swype.
Is there a way to increase the memory now?
I am running FroYo 2.10.405.2 and Radio 5.09.05.30_2.
Thanks in advance...
You could try a custom rom with apps2sd for starters

Ah ok... Will read-up before going for one.
One more thing, please.
Unrevoked worked without a hitch. And there is no visible difference, either. No change at the HBOOT screen.
Which prompts me to ask: shouldn't it change from S-ON to S-OFF? Or am I getting confused with something else?
PS: apps2sd? I have a software called App 2 SD. Any difference between the two?
Unrevoked dosent unlock your bootloader, if you want to do that just search development for "alpharev" ..... apps2sd+ and the native froyo move to sd are diffrent, the biggest advantage being apps2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache (mine is over 50mb)

Root is not the same as s-off. There is a fix, which flashes a pathced hboot though, which till give you s-off. It is easy, and i prefer to have it, as et makes recovering the phone so much easier, if something happens
For a2sd there is 2 major types. The one implemented in froyo by default, which you already make use of. The app you have allows you to mave pretty much any app to the sd-card. But you will still have the dalvik-cache in the phone memory. The other type of a2sd is what i have experienced to give me plenty of space is usually implemented in most custom roms, and is activated by making an ext-partition on your sd-card(can be done through rom manager).
I prefer the last one by far, and if i should recommend a rom for you, it should be AuraxtSense, which have some great UI changes, which makes the phone look great in my opinion. If you want std. htc sense rom and look, leedroid is a decent rom, and if you want to play around with a rom without sense like the nexus one, you should try cyanogen mod or opendesire
Thanks, friends. Slowly finding my way about these tricks.
Dunno if it is a coincidence - I've never experienced "crash" issues but earlier today, the HTC launcher crashed and I had to live w/o the home screens for a few minutes.
Any idea why this might have happened?
As regards A2SD+
I found this bit by Googling...
1) Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
2) Backup the contents of your SD card somewhere.
3) Connect the SD card to your PC. Make sure it shows up as a drive in My Computer.
4) Load up the Partition Wizard applicatiion.
5) Select your memory card in Partition Wizard (usually at the bottom, look for the drive letter to make sure you don't delete a hard disk). It should have a partition already, probably FAT32 formatted. You need to right click on every partition within your memory card and click Delete.
6) It won't delete right away, these tasks will be added to the panel on the left. Click Apply to make it happen. This will obviously delete everything!
7) You should now have a single chunk of unallocated memory which is the entire storage capacity of the card. Right click on this and choose 'Create'.
8) In the options set 'Create As' to 'Primary' and the file system to FAT32. Leave Cluster Size as default and ignore the drive letter.
9) Now drag the bar below from the right to set the unallocated space after this partitiion. The large FAT32 partition is where your music, videos, pictures and other files will be stored so this needs to be the largest. Make sure you have plenty of room for everything you need. The space after it is where apps will live. Around 512MB should be sufficient though if you're going to be downloading lots of games and other large programs then make it a bit bigger. Click Ok to finish.
10) Now right click and 'Create' on the remaining unallocated space, ignoring the warning message that pops up. Set to Primary again, but this time in File System select 'Ext3' (you can also use Ext2, Google it if you're interested in the differences and want to read lots of debate about which is better). Don't change the size of the partition. Click Ok.
11) Now click Apply and let it do its stuff. Once finished you should have one FAT32 partition and one Ext3. Note that the Ext3 will not be visible through Windows normally so you can't browse the files, but you can delete it and format the entire card back to FAT32 via Partition Wizard.
Important: since all your apps will be stored on the SD card instead of the phone, switching the phone on without the card inside will cause problems, you may not even be able to boot properly. And if you change cards you'll need to make sure you copy the contents of the Ext3 partition to the new card.

I guess ext2/3 terms are Linux-related terms which I am not familiar with... Do I go ahead with this way of enabling A2SD+?
(I suppose folks who rooted without using Unrevoked have another way to enable A2SD+)
Thanks!
Ext2/3 is a linux partition type. Android can use this, because it is of course based of linux. The best thing you can do is backup your sd card and boot into the clockwordmod recovery. From there you can partition your sd card for a2sd+.
I have a 4gb sd card with a 512 mb ext3 partition for my apps.
Hope it helps!
Oh great... Thanks!
So... Does this method actually "fool" the device in to believing that the internal memory is 140ish + what we assign from the memory card?

Yep, but you'll still see it displayed separately. Most of the app's will go to ext partition, only data will stay on internal space. I recommend Quick System Info app for checking space (and bunch of other stuff).
Thanks!

I have a quick question related to all this. I just rooted my desire with unrevoked 3.21 and a recovery image has been installed and it is version 2.5.0.7 of clockworkmod, I guess the latest.
Then I read other posts where people suggest to use rom manager and one of the options is "install clockworkmod" ... but if I have already installed it why should I need it again? Do ROM manager and unrevoked install in different places may be different versions of clockworkmod? then which is the one that will be used booting in recovery? Does this mean that the recovery image installed by unrevoked could be deleted somehow..? There are a lot of controversial explanations in the forums and I really dont have any idea which one to believe. Any expert could explain in easy terms? Thanks

[Q] desire alpharev issue

Hi,
after S-OFF (alpharev) i tried to flash the resize partition image (bravo_alphaspl.img)...but after completing the procedure i did not get any extra internal memory..i was still stuck with 148mb..though i should get around 190mb
i followed the instructions
1) S-OFF
2) flash HBOOT bravo_alphaspl.img
3)wiped evrythin(system,cache,data) from recovery
4) nandroid restore
what wrong have i done???
Afaik, you flashed the same partition table that you had before. You have to pick another from the list on alpharev.nl. It depends how much space do you need for your system partition, e.g. oxygen's system fits in a 90 MB partition and you get loads of space for your apps. So it's up to you to decide.
Personally, I'm using the sense table: 50 MB more for apps and enough space to play with different roms.

Hi Yeti,
Yeppm, think so too, he has flashed the original Tables *lol*
Write another one
but be ensure that your "BACKUP" Fits on the new Paritions sizes, if the new partitions are to small, you cant restore your backup

Sorry for Bad english, i´m from Austria (I should write this as Signature here )
thanks alot...
will give it a shot to bravo sense..
Thanks
Hi..
I just noticed that the system.img (backup) is of 236mb so what should i do to make it below 180mb as i am trying to flash bravo sense
just out of curiosity have u looked to see what rom u want 1st? depending on the rom u want will depend on what hboot they recommend to use with it.
i want to go with the original rom that was pre-installed in the ph (as it is the most stable rom)..i jus want some extra internal memory.
also i have noticed a small issue... i hav a fat32/ext4 partioned microsd card and i have move2sd enabler and app2sd to move the apps..i downloaded a sw(10 mb)...which was installed on the card by default but it also took the same space in the internal memory.

K well from what ive read on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13767135
the bravo sense seems to be for sense roms with a lot of default apps removed(maybe a veteran xda member can confirm this too).
I would recommend you stick with the stock hboot and just go with something like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833310
both the above links seem to be the default rom u want but also with a2sd+ built in so flashing them will use the ext/2/3/4 u have on your sd card so u should notice a big diff in internal memory usage.
or even go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703 this is the leedroid rom based on froyo 2.2 but with a2sd+ and a few other tweaks etc. Still uses stock hboot so less hassle and has all your looking for.
Totally agreed. You can also look for teppics rom, which is stock with a2sd support.

[Q] Insertcoin - clean install but low internal ram?

Im running a desire on Insertcoin CM7 / 1.1.4.
I factory wiped the phone, installed the full 1.1.3 then immediately ran the 1.1.4 update.
My SD card has a 1gb ext4 partition created with gparted.
When using the phone even with NO apps installed i only have 24mb internal memory showing as free.
Using quick system info it shows "A2SD Storage, 1.01gb, free 589mb" and "Internal Storage free 24mb)
Using a terminal emulator and ls - l /data it shows the sym link to /sdcard/system as all OK.
So the question is what is eating my internal ram with noting installed? Also what is using 400mb+ of the sdcard system partition on a clean install?
As it stands the phone is near unusable as even 1 app triggers a low space warning and the usual non-sync and other problems.
What another hard reset do the job or any other suggestions? On first impression the ext4 seems to be being used (by something big!) but the internal memory starts out life full and gets worse.
I had the same issue. Then I switched to the A2SD+ STOCK HBOOT rom and it fixed the problem
Hope that helps.
How do i go about doing that? Do i need to mess with S-OFF and other boot loaders?
Is it just a case of replacing the CM7-insertcoin zip file with the A2SD+ or do i need to change hboot, partition, remove the CM7 recovery and so on?
Ive just done another factory wipe, reinstall and clean the phone has 54mb. Ive installed 2 apps and the size of them is coming out of internal memory - even though its showing SD card is used for something it seems the full size of the app still comes out of the internal ram.
Same checks as before, its showing 640mb free out of 1.01gb on the ext4 partition, ls -l is showing app -> /system/sd/app.
Internal storage 45mb free out of 148mb.
Just download the stock version
simple
CM7 is for those with cm7 hboot
Read a noob guide front to back, knowledge helps For examply... apps2sd will still use internal space (less than without it but still some)
Look up data2ext
Just curious.. what HBOOT are you currently using on your phone? Is it Stock or CM7/r2?
No idea.
Its a stock desire 2.2 which i rooted with unrevoked.
The root gave me CWM recovery etc but no idea if its changed hboot or not.

Yeah follow MrBigB's post.
If you would wanna stay in Stock hboot, then download the correct Insertcoin ROM.
Cheers all, ive put the A2SD+ version on and its working perfectly. No idea why CM7 didnt seem to.
Nice! The CM7 version didn't work well for you because that rom was optimized to run on CM7 hboot and not Stock.

[Q] Mildwild CM-5.0 and Mount2sd issues

Hi,
I have been running Supreme Desire 1.2 with the data2sd script on a 1gb ext-4 partition on my HTC Desire for a few months. So last week I broke my ankle and during my forced downtime I've been looking at updating my ROM, noticed that Supreme is still at 1.2 and plumped for MildWild 5.0 for a change:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453287&page=313
I wiped everything and formatted the sd card (not the sd-ext) via recovery and flashed the new ROM. So far so good. I should point out that I am in no way an expert but I'm not afraid to muck about with stuff if there are instructions to follow.
I looked for data2sd options and post 3127 in the above thread suggested mount2sd:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342387
I flashed and used the aroma installer and opted for the non-custom install. Titanium backup shows the SD(a2sd) as 1.05gb with some of it used but each time I have restored an app it has gone to the System ROM memory. Also, in the storage settings screen on Supreme it used to show the internal memory as over 1gb i.e. not distinguishing between the phone and the sd. This still shows that I have 148 mb internal storage.
Is this because it isn't working or I am I missing something obvious?
I've attached a couple of screenshots.
Cheers
Fabs
im using mildwild oxygen and in that u have to choose in the settings where apps are installed, sdcard, sd-ext r internal. maybe be the same with the CM version, try settings/cyanogen settings to see if its the same.
dont know if thats the answer u was looking for but thought id say anyway

Desire - ICS (Sandvoid) - Wait/Kill on most Applications

I flashed my HTC desire (Stock HBOOT) with ICS (Sandvoid) 0.15.
Installed smoothly. Then I ran a2sd install and answered y/y/y (wanted to see how far I can take it
Immediate observation was that when I run some app (facebook/youtube and even some system apps) it used to hand throw up a screen that app is not responding and option to WAIT / KILL etc
If I wait usually the app would come back but it was nagging too much.
My question is if I get a class 6+ SD card would this issue disappear?
By the way, it was beautiful to see ICS on my desire and I want to go there again.
For now shifted to Oxygen 2.3.2 with HBOOT oxygen r2. wondering if it also has an option to move data 2 ext inbuilt? tried a2sd install did not work (I know its inbuilt etc etc)

I had the same issue and it seems to have stopped when I did a fresh install and did NOT move the Dalvik-cache to SD.
Also, try another CPU guvernor (performance maybe).
Hope this helps.

Thanks TheRavenGod.
I had tried the "performance" governer (though with cache and data both moved)
I have ordered for a class 6 card will give it another try. I am app hungry so needs loads of space to install them.
Will keep the results posted on this thread.
Just installed ICS keyboard on Oxygen 2.3.2, Enjoying it.
You should try another a2sd script. I find that croniccorey's d2ext mod works well and is fast and stable. He also has some other a2sd scripts here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716124
Be advised that the d2ext script does not work on every rom. d2ext is speedy because doesnt move the dalvik cache

Yes but that would not give me all the space that I need
My Class 6 card should arrive today, will try once more.
For now enjoying the OxygenR2 HBOOT with lot of space in data partition. Still about 170 MB left after my usual applications installed.

when you run a2sd script, choose Y/N/Y. ie.. move only dalvik to sd card, dont move app data to sd card. This was working fine with me always.
