Testing new wallpapers

Hi guys
I have been playing with my pc and my G1,I am trying out some wallpapers,resolutions and little by little I like what I am getting.....this is not amazing and I am sure some of you have done something similar....but I thought it would be nice if I share it with you,so that we can share our ideas and thoughts.The resolution is 480x320,I will change the resolution and try others out.
Put the wallpapers on the same folder as your pictures once you've done that you can start using the new wallpapers.

if all you won’t to do is screen shots all you need to do is enable usb debugging on the G1 buy going to Settings, then Applications, and then Development. Check the checkbox for “USB debugging.install the sdk and install the windows drivers from here http://www.anddev.org/debugging-installing_apps_on_the_g1_windows_driver-t3236.html this is all i did and it works for me on vista did not install eclipse or jdk just go to the tools folder in the android sdk main folder

Wallpaper problem
I created this wallpaper...... When going into photo viewer, it looks fantastic. Can zoom in without any dithering.
However, the moment I apply as my wallpaper, it looks like poop.
Have tried as a JPG and PNG

Awesome wallpaper... but question do you have root? maybe you can replace the originals.

I do have root and will try that. Anyone wanna put this on their phone and see if it's just me?

When you select it as the wallpaper, do you expand the box to cover the whole pic? So far, every pic I've resized to 640x480 and thrown on have been absolutely flawless. I'm using paint.net to resize and convert them to jpg, if that makes a difference.

Yes I have.... Can you try and use it yourself and see what it looks like on your device?

When I use a 640x480 image and try and set it as a wallpaper it always asks me to crop it. Does it then strech the cropped image?
Im really confused about the wallpapers atm.
Btw, I know tmobile (in the UK) reduces image quality if you browse a image on the web via there data connection (eg save picture as, in the browser) but over wifi you loose no image quality.

Adding wallpapers to system default options
I wanted to add some wallpapers to the SD card but have them pop up under the phone wallpaper options instead of under photos. Is there a place on the SD card I can put them so they are grouped with the default ones? I have a lot of pics so it takes a long time to scroll through them to find my wallpapers so I am hoping I can make it a bit more organized.

The defaults reside in /system/app/Launcher.apk/res/drawable/

Can I add wallpaper and apps to an update.zip?
I have created a custom theme and I am wondering if I can just throw more .apk programs into the app folder to install additional programs?
Also, I am trying to add my own wallpaper to launcher.apk with the 2 file sizes and proper naming but they arent coming up, is there something else I need to edit to have them showup as "default" wallpaper?

mANILLA 2.5.19211619.0 background on all Tabs

Im running mANILLA 2.5.19211619.0 im trying to get my background to change on all the tabs. None of the cabs are working, the only one ive gotten to work adds a huge black space at the bottom of the pic it adds, and once its done I cant change that pic. I want to add a custom picture to it and be done with it, where is the original pic stored so i can replace it?

In \Windows - they're called stwater_480_800 (portrait) and stwater_808_480 (landscape).
Have you tried HD Wall though? You can create a cab file with any picture you want, it skins the top and bottom bars and is bg4all, plus it's easily uninstallable.

Those files do contain the background I wanted, But its still showing the weird light blur circle background instead. Changing that file does nothing.

Are you using a miri rom? The background has concentric circles in almost a low res picture? You can enhance the quality of the picture by installing the neo drivers
Again, the easiest way to get bg4all in high res is to use HD Wall.

All is great only problem is Weather Tab does not change. Its a completely different background, even from before.

Sorry about that, It was calendar And i see why its different, I was in day to day view. Thanks again appreciate it! Now the background Miri uses for start menu is the background for TFlo 3d. Thanks again!

Strange, miri must have done some coding to the weather tab to use different backgrounds. Sorry, no suggestions on that one. Perhaps try to ask in the miri thread.
EDIT: Ok, I see you were on the Calendar tab. the calendar tab on many roms has a grey backing, supposedly to make ti easier to read.

All is good now!, Originally used Titanium but got tired of so much swiping to move around, Now to find a 20 programs menu so i can have 5 on the home screen, found a cab earlier but it messed up the wall paper

Calendar transparency courtesy of millski. Unzip the attached file and copy the files to \Windows using Total Commander and overwrite the originals (after taking a backup of course just in case it doesn't work).

Id hate to open a new thread for this so ill post it here. I've almost got my home screen how i like it, my problem now is Notifications do not show on anything except the top start bar im on build 28011, Miri's test Rom. Im trying to add notification icons above my programs like this:

I would prefer it if the bubbles showed on the home tabs/slider bar in there appropriate icon. but anyhelp is appreciate btw im on manilla 2.5
I have gotten the Text & Email bubbles working, now im working on the Call History / Missed Calls shouldnt they show under contacts? just like the text one does.

[Q] A doubtless foolish question about wallpaper

I apologize in advance for what must be a foolish question. My inability to locate an answer when I search the forums just helps reinforce the notion that the answer is glaringly obvious, so I fully expect to be taken to task for having an IQ slightly below that of the average potted plant.
When I install a ROM on my Epic, and sometimes even when I simply apply a theme, it often has a very nice wallpaper that accompanies it. If I browse other wallpapers in any of what I would consider the "usual" locations (Wallpaper, Live Wallpapers & Gallery), I can't help but notice that the theme's wallpaper is not among the available choices. The implication is that if I were to select a different wallpaper - even just to see how it might look - I would be unable to return to the theme's wallpaper without re-flashing. Surely this can't be right?
Am I missing something? Wouldn't it make sense to simply include the wallpaper as a standard, everyday typical wallpaper, easliy accessible through the usual menus? Or is there, perhaps, some way of choosing "no wallpaper," which would default to the theme's background image?

default wallpaper is located in 2 places,one I know for sure is in the framework-res,the other I cant remeber,Ill have to wait to get to my PC when I get to the houe,in about 2 hours...

Lol its ok I spent about 2 hours banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out too...but I found it out, so here's mine in my case:
I have emotionless beast theme, so that was the default wallpaper I was looking for. You'll need an explorer like astro file manager.
Go to the very root of the phone (keep hitting up till your in the folder simply named "/"
Navigate to "system", then to "framework"
In there is a .apk, not a folder, named framework-res (there prbly is a folder too but that's not what you want). Click it, astro will bring you up a menu, and hit "browse file"
In the next screen navigate to "res", then to "drawable-hdpi"
Finally you're in the right folder. Scroll down till you see the picture file named "default_wallpaper"...this should be it
Now remember, this is simply my case...but I suspect its a standard practice for devs to put the wallpaper there in most roms so I'm betting it'll work for whatever you're using
NOTE: you can't take a shortcut and simply search for "default_wallpaper" since its located in an .apk file, which astro doesn't search through.

I believe you're entirely correct about finding it again, but I wonder if you (or anyone else) might have some idea as to why something so apparently simple as changing your wallpaper has to be so complex an affair as to force one to acquire software he might not own to look in places he'd never otherwise go to find files he might not know about and break them open to tinker about in areas he probably has no business messing around with...all to put back a silly wallpaper he didn't mean to change in the first place? Shouldn't part of the experience involve a certain amount of "user friendliness?"
Obviously, I'm no developer (potted plant-brained folk need not apply), so perhaps there's a reason why a ROM or Theme can't install the wallpaper in such a way as to become more easily accessible? Is it a problem with permissions that prevents copying the wallpaper into the appropriate directory? An issue with protecting the developer (as in, preventing his wallpaper from being distributed separately from his ROM/Theme? Something else entirely?

I think he just stuck it in the default hiding place for internal wall-papers. Each of google's launchers also has some internal wallpapers that are tucked away from people. Changing your wallpaper is easy. Changing back to image that is hidden from you is tougher.

Exactly my point! I'm just curious about why it should be hidden away in the first place - and not just a single ROM/Theme, but so far every one I've tried.
Since I'm fairly certain there's not some world-wide conspiracy of developers to go out of there way to make such an apparently simple thing difficult for their end users, it struck me that there must be a reason behind it, and while I appreciate squshy 7's work-around and can certainly follow his instructions, it leaves me curious about why anyone should have to.
Please note: My problem is fixed - it's now just my curiousity that wonders at the need for such complexities.

If I had to take a guess, it probably is for the same thing you are calling in to question: simplicity.
Think about it: changing the default (stock) wallpapers is easy enough...but have you ever actually "seen" the wallpapers, as in where they are located?
I haven't, simply because I've never looked. But we never wonder because they're so readily accessible from the wallpaper changer.
Again this sounds like they're doing nothing but making it harder for themselves and us. Why not put the default wallpaper for your ROM in the same location as the other wallpapers so its easier for us to change back and forth?
In my opinion, in that question lies what I feel is the answer: because maybe it's easier for them to put it in that drawable-hdpi.apk for some reason. So we're brought back to simplicity; it's just in this case it's for the devs sake.
All of this is, of course, entirely conjecture. I'm no dev and I really have no idea. But I think it's sound reasoning right?

Those other default wallpapers that aren't from your gallery are usually built in to the launcher in a similar way.

Ah - I think I'm beginning to understand. In other words, there's no there there. There's no single place, repository, directory or folder into which any installed image magically becomes a wallpaper? And if a developer wanted to make his wallpaper more "accessible" in a way that would simplify our lives, he'd have to sort of "crack open" whatever launcher we might be using and insert it, which is neither likely nor desirable. Do I have that right?
If so, then the best we could hope for would be an easily accessible copy of the wallpaper that we could insert into our own gallery for future use - which would still be preferable to the digital gymnastics currently required.

Pretty much. Sometimes you have to do the work to pull a wallpaper out of a launcher or framework-res. Once you have it, changing your wallpaper to it is the easy part.
If I go to change my wallpaper, it asks me to select wallpaper from:
Home screen wallpaper
Live wallpapers
Wallpaper gallery
Wallpapers (com.android.launcher)
Wallpapers (com.ebproductions.android.launcher)
The last three are for different launchers. The next to last one has the stock Epic wallpapers. These wallpapers are all stored in the apks.
I'd be willing to bet that there is a way to simply put the wallpaper in folder and point some setting to it. It isn't done that way because by default, that stuff is all packed in to different things where it is nice and self-contained and many rom developers just adjust the default settings until they have a reason to make a departure.

[Q] Where/how is the stock lock screen wallpaper stored?

I have been trying to figure this out for some time so I can be rid of as many TouchWiz apps as possible - and after replacing TWiz gallery with the AOSP one I can no longer change the lock screen wallpaper outside of a handful of images that appear to be contained within /system/app/PhotoWall.apk/res/raw
Which include the default dandelion image. However, replacing the jpg files within that APK didn't change my options. There is also a white/red/black squares TMobile thing that has 2 versions in /system/wallpaper/drawable but I tried placing my own image there (making the dimensions the same) and was still not able to select it.
I can't figure out where the dandelion pic is because I can still choose it even though I have replaced it's g1p1.jpg within that PhotoWall.apk file
Anybody know where these things are actually stored so I can choose my own wallpaper once again?
The reason I am not able to choose anymore is that the TWiz interface options for selecting Lock Screen wallpaper apparently only want to let you select it with it's own TWiz Gallery app or this PhotoWall app, thus it won't let me invoke the AOSP gallery app to pick an image.

After changing that did you try picking new wallpaper again? I'm going to have to check that apk out now...
Tried replacing "keyguard_default_wallpaper.jpg" with my own same 1280x1280 size image in drawable-hdpi and drawable-xhdpi but no dice. Still seeing the dandelion pic.

sorry for the bump but I am getting pretty lost here trying to figure out where this thing is stored. I keep digging through random APK's and coming up empty. Any dev's or clever users able to help?

World wallpaper

My husband thought it would be funny to change my world/globe lock screen wallpaper that I have had on my phone for nearly two years and now I can't find it anywhere. Have I lost it completely??

Do you know specifically how he changed it? Sometimes it gets overwritten, (and it's gone), and sometimes it gets renamed by a wallpaper app, in order to set a different one in the same folder. Use a root browser and go to /data/system/users/0, and see what files are there. If there's one called 'wallpaper' with no extension, add .jpg to it, and open it, and see if it's your old wallpaper or your current one. If there's a file called 'wallpaper.bak', or something like that, its probably the one you're looking for.
