[Q] Sprint Roaming. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So, I just switched to Sprint, because with work, I get my monthly bill coming down to about 60 dollars a month.
But a quick question. Does Sprint charge per text message if you are roaming? The service at my house is less than stellar and whenever I get home it pops in roaming right away.
Was just wondering, and if so that they do charge. What about if I am on wifi when I send them?

I'm on the unlimited text and data plan and I get free roaming data voice and text. However if u do very excessive data roaming they will tell you to stop or cancel service.
Sent from my Galaxy S2

Not for texting but it is 200 megabytes for data and 600 or 800 minutes of use. I forget which 1 it is. Also your mobile to mobile and pick numbers don't count and your anytime Minutes do

Serious question bout Verizon prl

So is my any mobile to mobile under Verizon mobile to mobile??

Your hosed Homey. Unless you get a really nice rep on the line to give you a 1 time credit and show some love.
Roaming minutes count as part of your minutes, they are deducted from your plan. If you call someone when your phone is roaming (Which it is, running a VZW PRL) those minutes count against your plan total. So if you have a 450 minute plan and talked 1450 minutes, your 1000 minutes over.
You can also ask if they will let you buy some buckets of minutes, to buy the total down. You used to be able to buy an extra 100 minutes etc for a few dollars, like $5 or $10. If they allow that you might be able to eliminate or buy up the overage.
Lastly, see if they can bump you retroactively to the unlimited plan for that month and this coming month. Then just cancel/switch back to your current plan the next month. You're allowed to switch plans whenever you want and it doesn't affect your contract date.
Like I said, these are all other options to try if a rep isn;t hell of cool and hooks you up one way or another. lastly, stop using the PRL full time! lol I only use it for maybe an hour or two at work, just here and there. This is one of those reasons.
Sorry, with all due respect, you abused the system.
They shouldn't give you a credit for that.
LOL!! This is kinda funny.
I think what this guy is asking is not about how to get out of the bill but how he got this high.
For example Yes, I know roaming goes against your minutes. However if you call Mobile (Remember sprint has unlimited mobile to mobile plans) why was he charged overages if he never calls a land line (He says home phones so I am assuming he means land line).
If he is only calling mobile phones and roaming shouldn't he be safe under the unlimited mobile to mobile and maybe need to point out that the numbers were mobile phones or not.

I guess I can see where the claim to humor is coming from but the fact is, it's sad.
XDA is supposed to be a site to help people, not hurt them.
While XDA cannot be people's parents, this information on PRL hacking should not be allowed to be posted. [much like stolen apks cannot be]
This is stealing/abuse. There really is no other use for this.
Stealing is wrong. Whether its stealing from developer or carriers. (In this case Sprint/Verizon)

Mobile to any mobile only counts on Sprint's network. If you're roaming, it doesn't matter if you call a mobile phone or a land line, it goes against your anytime minutes. I think the same applies to nights/weekends - they're only free if you're using Sprint's network.
It makes sense, and roaming constantly on Verizon is generally a bad idea. For $700, you would've done just as well to pay the ETF & switch to Verizon. If your signal is so bad that you have to constantly roam on Verizon, you might want to just go to Verizon.

That I didn't know. I thought on roaming we weren't going against the minutes in all honesty. I have a 450 minute plan so I rarely call landlines much of my conversation is based on cell phones and the only roaming I usually get hit with is when I use the Mexico based towers while I am still inside the US. Normally when that happens I write down the day and time call sprint to let them know that I am using the Mexico towers again but need roaming when I travel outside of the City.
With me now knowing that I believe the OP is stuck here. I agree if hes on VZW that much it is time for a switch. Thanks for clearing that up.
As I said in my earlier post, roaming minutes count as regular plan minutes. Doesn't matter if it's a mobile number or not. Its in the T&C, which most of us don't really read.

At $50 a month why don't you look into Tmobile's Value plans? With the Value Plan you have to have your own phone (buy on Ebay, craigs, etc) or buy your own phone (full price at Tmobile), or finance the phone for 20 monthly payments (from Tmobile). You have to get a two year contract also with a $200 ETF.
First 100MB at 4G seems like a joke. I get 2GB at 4G and then its edge speed after that. I am currently paying 49.99 for 500 mins, unlimited text, 2GB data, nights/wknds, and free wifi calling which doesnt use up your airtime mins.

simple mobile started great not till they introduced the 4g 60$ plan.. since then my 40$ plan was capped at 119K that,s worst than edge i did not even reach the limit at all. my brother activated brand new account same thing and i got tire of waiting 30 on the line to speak with someone who will blame your phone for it they fixed the speed once by resetting the date on their side but at the begging of every cycle it goes back to 119K it,s just awful to advertise unlimited 3g and not even give 3g speed... the 30$ deal is very tempting... but when u make calls using data doesn't it take bandwidth
The other thing to remember with Simple Mobile, is it rides TMO towers, BUT, you will be a "Second Class Citizen", TMO customers will always get priority data/calls over SM customers, so even when you are on EDGE, you are at the end of the line ...

So you can call and receive from mobile phones free with just data? How reliable is this set up? can you easily change to use you T-mobile minutes?

It's capped at 5gb, also not that hard to get as i have that atm. I don't really call that much but if i run out of mins i just open groove ip, and people can call my google number. if you need a free sim search for walgreens deal. I got a $50 refill card + the phone with sim(nokia) for $40 somehow!
Unlimited minutes, text, data (2GB) = $60 + $1 and tax.

$30 unlimited text, web 5 gb unthrottled and 100 minutes

I currently use simple mobile $40 plan but I just saw this guy on walmart.com tmobile prepay plus you get tmobiles 4g up to 5 gb unthrottled for 30 bucks that totally beats paying 40 to get 3g and be cut off after 2-3 gb of data usage. Dont know if anyone has posted this before just figured I would put it out there for people because its a pretty damn good deal if you don't use many minutes

I'd seriously thought about moving to that... but ended up doing something different.
what did u end up going with?
I use net10 with there tmobile sim... 4g is fast and unlimited calling and text... First month i used close to 5gb and my data was never throttled... I used the tmobile $30 plan but when i got throttled i could not deal with the slow speeds so i switched to net10
Only 100 minutes of talk for a whole month? Can't do. I use around 450. Not including nights and weekends

I have this plan on S3 After 5Gigs boom ''Up to 2G Speeds'' You won't be able to load a website, seriously, but when on HSPA+ I got as high as 18Mbit near tower
I switched to this from Sprint. You can also get it on T-Mobile's website - but not in stores.
Very happy. I looked at my average minutes per month and it was about 100 each month when including ones that didn't "count" toward my stated pool. Now I can pay a lower monthly fee and be able to not only do the calling I did before, but have a phone that does so much more than just make calls and text.
I get 4G in the city, only GPRS at work - although it's sometimes more reliable than our WIFI - so I'm not complaining (need to speed test it, it's slow but not unbearable).
When I was looking into it, one thing people mentioned was that you can use calls over data/wifi (VOIP etc) to make up for the 100 minute limit.
i've been using this plan($30 5gb unl txt 100 minutes) for over a year and i use skype for the voice calling(IIRC is a little under $3) for a total of about $33 and change a month. absolutely loving it. you can also just use just about any kind of voip but skype seems to be the most maintstream.
I actually used GooveIP on a loaner phone from a friend while I had no actual cell service - and on the SG3 before activating it.
Free and easy - you use Google Voice along with it as well, essentially making it a fully-featured phone just only able to function with a wifi connection. I know people that have gone "all the way" and dropped cell service for a wifi-only device, but I'm a bit too paranoid for that.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?
I was entertaining this $30/mo 100/5GB plan, but have decided to go nearly all wifi. I only use the phone for checking voicemails, very rarely for calls, as I've tended towards Skype and GrooveIP for calls, but honestly I have nearly all my contacts using Heytell (voice 'walkie-talkie' uses data only) and they LOVE it...it's practically the only way we talk to one another anymore. I'll use my pay-as-you-go SIM with cheap minutes(Gold Membership already, my 1000+minutes are good for a year), for the rare cellphone call, and buy the Hotspot from Wallyworld, giving me 60 day data access (3.5GB) for $35...making my monthy cost around $20 month (approx. 17 data, 3 on SIM). Obviously, I'll use my wifi at home for music/Netflix, pretty much as I always have.

You can port your number over, and additional minutes are only 10 cents, just keep a tenner in your account balance in case you go over.

For the $30/mo plan, it's for new activations only - so you'd need to get a new SIM card and new account.

You can also port your number to Google Voice - thus, no matter what your number through the carrier changes to, you can ALWAYS have the same number with freedom to change whenever you want.

Ting BYOD

Just got my device activated on Ting and it seems to be working great. Bought a used E4GT off swappa. I filled out Tings request to be in the beta for BYOD and got a message that I could activate it. I followed the links and all went well. I did need to update my profile on the phone, but after that it works. Data and 4G are working and with how I use my phone this is much cheaper.
Nice! Heard this was coming but didn't know they were doing betas!
Might have to really consider this....
I just checked it out.....what a ripoff.
Their default layout when you check out "Plans" is 500Minutes, 4000 text messages, and 1Gb of data. Most people go over 500 megs easy..and with sprints free mobile to mobile, you would have to count that too as part of your total minutes. 4000 text messages seems excessive, even for heavy texters. 1Gb of data seems too low for the average user.......so lets adjust this, shall we??
1000 minutes (minimum)
+ 2000 text messages
+ 2Gb of data
=
$74 per month.
Lets just your a heavy phone user
2000 mins, 2000 text and 2Gb data
=
$94 per month

You'd be surprised... Not everyone actually does need that kind of data.
Here's my example. Now keep in mind I don't pay for calls to Japan landlines, which is at least 200 minutes a month.
But look at the difference... that works just fine for me.
Add BYOD and I'm set... can't do that with my current MVNO!
They also credit you on months where you don't use all of it.
On Sprint I average
300 minutes
900 texts
1Gb data.
So I could get away with probably a $65 plan...better than the $80 I'm paying now. Though T-mobile's unlimited pay as you go plan is better and same price virtually.
The thing that is appealing about Ting is that whatever "plan" you pick is just the starter. It's initially tier based and variable depending upon what you use, split out by voice, text, and data. See below:
As you can see, the lowest tier is the "XS" which is $0. You do have to pay a base line $6/mo, plus regulatory fees/taxes, which shouldn't amount to more than $9.
If you start with "Large" across the board, it's $50 (+$6). That sets you for 1000 minutes, 2000 texts, and 1000Mb of data on your account. Now lets say you use only 450 minutes. That put you in the "Medium" tier, which is $9. So, you get credited $9 and then next cycle you're automatically put on the Medium tier.
Where Ting kind of "gets you" is when you cross over into the next tier. If you use 500 minutes, you're billed $9. If you use 501 minutes, it's $18. So, if you're someone who just wants a phone to keep for very low usage, you may get by with $0 in voice/minutes if you don't make any calls or text. But one call or one text and each of those is now $3. So, you probably won't want Ting for an emergency or "seldom use" phone.
Text messages are cheap. But where voice and data are concerned, crossing over a tier gets expensive. So, it would be important to watch your data and minutes as you get close. If you rarely come close to crossing into a higher tier or are just very good about watching it, you could save quite a bit of money compared to your recurring contract plan with a big carrier, like Sprint.

Possibly... but they don't support BYOD.
The idea, as far as I've heard, is that you'll be able to bring any CDMA device on Sprint's bands and use it, regardless of who it came from. Not sure how that's going to work with previous ESN assignments but supposedly that too has been resolved.

Ya I get that. But a lot of people will just flash to these providers. I think the BYOD might be more of a gimmick? I dont know there are better ways to save money and run your own device if you are diligent you can figure them out...
yup
Open Beta
I agree this is not a good deal for high users. But for me with most of my time on wifi and limited phone and text, i get by for about $25 a month.
I also looked into the surcharges. They vary quite a bit by state, but in Michigan it works out to about 10%. Ting will tell you what they will be for you if you put in a request to their help desk.
The beta is now open to all. Seven devices are now supported for BYOD.
If you signup, hit this link to get me some extra credits.
Just so you know, with Ting. you only pay for what you use.
So if you don't use all the minutes, text, or data, you get credited back next month.
So it is way cheaper.
I rarely use data too, i usually use wifi whenever i can (killing 2 birds with 1 stone=battery life and better speeds)
I on average use about less than 100mb monthy because at home, school, church, and target i have wifi

AT&T Data Throttling

Is At&t still throttling data for grandfathered unlimited users? I used to get a warning text when I got near 5gb. But for the past two months I have been streaming through the Google Music App and haven't gotten one text message or email. I am currently up to 13gb data usage, my next billing cycle is 5/27, so I may hit 20gb for the month. I remember when I first got my Galaxy S III I streamed for a week straight and got the text message warning.
Is this something they are doing for their unlimited lte users, because I was seriously thinking about signing up for T-Mobile's unlimited data plan. But if things keep going the way they are going, I'll have no reason to switch.
I guess since they are in heavy competition right now with T-Mobile, they have no choice but to follow suite and have truely unlimited data for grandfathered unlimited data plans.

To my knowledge they aren't throttling users who were grandfathered in. My buddy has an iPhone 5 with unlimited data and he passed 7gb the other week, no warning message or anything.

Very true, but I'm not sure about specific speeds. I guess I can ask him to log them and see what happens over time.
After a while I stopped getting warnings, but am still definitely throttled after 5gb. Best way to check is to get the speed test app and check your speeds before and after hitting 5gb one bill cycle. Keep in mind it can take a day or two after hitting the mark before it kicks in.
Maybe you're lucky and slipped through the cracks some how.
they throttled me.. I have the 3 GB data plan, & I'm up in the 5% they said. I only get "G" speeds, & I tried to select 4g & 3g only in the *#4636#* menu and still I'm stuck with slow ass speeds til the billing cycle restarts. it sucks!

You need to call and complain. Not to regular customer, but with customer retention dept.
Yes they do. They did meant month when I hit 5gb. Big speed difference.

I haven't been throttled the last couple of months either. Cross fingers!

I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan and I got a warning a few weeks ago that I was approaching 5GB:
"Your data usage on your 4GLTE smartphone is near 5GB this month. Exceeding 5GB during this or future billing cycles will result in reduced data speeds, though you'll still be able to email and surf the web..."
I got this on 4/25/2013, so yes, they still throttle, or at least threaten to throttle. Don' know where I finally ended up since I don't know what my billing cycle is (company phone, and I never see the bill).
Dial *#3282# while on a tw based Rom. It should send you text message telling you when your billing cycle starts over

This works on AOSP ROMs as well, just FYI.
Yeah, most of the "check your (data/minutes)..." dialer codes will.
AT&T still throttles. Once you have went over the 5Gb mark and they send you a message, they are free to throttle you from that point. They have given you an official written notice. Whether or not they will throttle you I think is a matter of how lucky or unlucky you are. Seen it happen with a couple of friends of mine. Both got the messages but the following month despite both going over the mark, only one was throttled. Luckily I never hit more than 5 gigs (usually between 3 to 4.5 gigs depending) because my internet at home is just as fast (a touch faster actually) as LTE, so when I am at home I utilize WIFI as it seems to give me better battery life when utilizing internet services.
They were throttling at the 2gb mark.
The 5gb mark is back to the original unlimited plan. Its atleast better.

This was true at one point, but (after a couple last suits) they have since changed their policy to throttling once you hit 5gb each billing period.
I received that message months ago and have since, on numerous occasions, gone over 20gigs for the months billing cycle. As far as I know, I'm not being throttled though I am doing the speed test logging now.

Possibly it's market specific whether or not it's the top 5% or 5GB.
