Backup, but not the usual way - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got issue a week ago where almost every app randomly crashes on my phone. It is Desire running CyanogenMod, with app2sd (including data). I tried upgrading CM, restoring stuff from nandroid backup, and changing SD cards, but the problem always comes back.
So I want to wipe everything clean and install system on fresh device.
However, I also want to keep my contacts, text messages, call history and stuff like that. How can I do it without using nandroid (which would also transfer my old problems)?

I use sms backup+ for sms and Call history. Are your contacts not google contacts?

Not all of them are google contacts. I'd also like to keep some other settings from other apps...
When you restore SMSes with SMS backup+, does the stock android message app still see the correct dates of text messages, or are they one big mess cause all the dates are reset to restore date?
Basically, I want to backup everything that does not have a chance of transfering the error form the old systme.
Do you think full system Titanium Backup would do it? Does it only backup app settings and saved data, or whole apps?

Quick question my Geniuses

I addicted to looking at and trying out new roms but its so annoying that i have to download everything back and all my text are wiped bla bla i think some people might understand.
anyway i can install new themes but when its done loading that all my apps and everything is still the way i left it?
thanks in advance
First of, download and install Titanium Backup or Titanium Backup Pro. With it, you can backup all of your apps and their data. After doing that, go into recovery and make a nandroid backup of your current set up. Doing so will put your device back like it was just in case you don't like the new rom, theme or whatever it is you plan to flash. Afterwards and while in recovery, wipe everything except the SD card then flash your new rom. None of your previous apps should be installed.

you beat me to it, lol
Flattering us won't help.
And well to get your apps back, backup with titanium, restore apps and data, not system settings. And for you second question, it depends on what the app themes, you can always re-do the icon.
And jeeze, I'm the last one in the 7:08, 7:09, 7:10 time reply train.
Also, I just learned about backing up adw desktop settings ...restores all folder and apps where they were when you backed up. Super convienent...use after restoring from titanium backup.
ok so i just got to install titanium backup (which i have already but have never used it) and backup my apps and data as is (does this include my text messages? )
and the difference between titanium and Nandroid backup is the titanium backs up my apps and nan backup takes me back to my last backup was just incase the current rom i installed is not to my liking or faulty? right?
Correct me if im wrong, i can take it
tell you guys the truth i just care about my text's messages being erased. i don't mind installing the apps again.
Download and install SMS backup+ from the market, it's free. Once you set it up (easy) it will back up all your SMS and MMS to your Gmail account. When you load a new rom you can restore all your txts as well. You can set it to back up automatically or manually, your choice. To restore just start the app nd click restore, boom, all sms are loaded back up.
Thanks alot guys i really do appreciate it.
Complimentary BJ's to all
Mybackup pro will do that call logs text msgs and mms

i got a new rom and clicked restore and it restored "0"
and i did back it up all 139 texts.
Did you check your gmail account? It should show all your texts saved to a folder. If it didn't, then you never properly backed them up.
Once you install the new rom, be sure you signed back into your account in the backup app.

[Q] Restoring messages?

Hey,
Today at my first time, I Installed ROM and Kernal and Radio and all this essential crap.
Before I started, I went to HTC Sync software on my PC, and backed up all my files, Calender, People and thou..
But I guess I didn't notice that the SMS messages are not included on the backup list.
So now with my new ROM, when I synced back the files from the HTC Sync, it only bringed me back the Calender, People.. but not the messages,
Witch is pretty important for me, I had alot of important SMSs which I wish to restore.
When I installed the ROM I went through all the steps on the guide including the Wipe thing that I understood it is something backup?
Also I used the google's sync all the time,
Is there any option to get my SMSs from there?
Thank you very much,
Yarden.
As far as I know HTC Sync and Google Sync no backup messages.
You should have previously backup you messages with (for example) Titanium Backup.
If you haven`t Nanodroid Backup previous rom - you can`t restore you messages.
I don't love you..
oh crap. stupid ROM..
and what about the applications?
I see that they also gone,
Can they be restored?
No, apps can`t restore.
Before flash everything, I advise do backup all with TB, nanodroid backup and then flash all that you need.
These actions will help you keep all the data and, if anything, to restore everything as it was.
Good luck.

If you downloaded them through the marketplace they'll automatically download and install when you sign in with your google account on your phone.
sromer, titanium backup does not wipe messages. To backup messages use sms backup+ which is free. If you have a nandroid backup, restore that, backup messages and do your rom thing again.

SMS Backup & Restore would also be a good choice
MyBackup has successfully restored sms, mms etc. for me 10+ times now. definitely worth using. great program!
If you want constant backups I use gosms and only use it yo schedule backups every day at 6, then all is good, but I'm going to start backing up on every text I get

MIUI Titanium Backup doesn't restore data

Hello all,
I installed MIUI rom on my galaxy S I900which seems to be working fine.
Prior to this I had made a full titanium backup of system data and apps
Now after resetting rights to TB, I would like to restore my contacts and messages.
As I set the folder location and go to backup/restore and contacts item, TB has well detected my backup with the correct date and time at which I made it.
The problem is TB displays a message data restored successfully but my contacts list is empty.
Same problem with messages.
Please help i really need this data back.
Thanks in advance
Wrong forum, mate
In general though, it's inadvisable to restore system apps or data with TiBu, especially going between TouchWiz/Sense and AOSP, which MIUI is.
System apps are generally dependent on framework proprietary to TW, and that framework isn't present on AOSP.
For contacts, migrate them all to google contacts, so you never have to worry again.
For messages, try SMS backup and restore (free in market)

Restoring data when switching ROMs

I was wondering if its possible to restore data like SMS Messages, WhatsApp Messages, Nova launcher settings etc. when switching from one ROM to another after doing a wipe to system and cache etc.
I am guessing that Titanium Backup serves this purpose? Do I basically click on each app in Titanium and perform a backup? And then restore it back after the ROM upgrade? Does Titanium only save the data of the app or the app itself? If the app itself as well, does it not cause issues when restoring to a different ROM?
whatsapp and nova, yes you definitely can.
sms messages. not sure with TiBu. i use SMS backup+ for that.
nova had its own backup option in the menu. And with titanium there is a batch backup option up in the right corner hit the icon that is a page with a check Mark. That will bring up the batch options then just choose one of the options under backup.be careful restoring system settings between different roms it almost always causes issues. Also I agree with sms backup+ for texts.

MMS Backup Restore works great for me to backup SMS and MMS messages and restore them on different ROMs.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5udy5tbXNiYWNrdXAiXQ..
however, SMS and MMS backup and restore is a new feature in Titanium Backup as well. So if you've already got that, might as well use it for SMS and MMS back-up in addition to apps.
Ti backup can backup and restore your SMS & MMS, call log and bookmarks if you go into Ti settings

[Q] Back Up/Restore for Note II Stock ROM to CM10.1.3 ROM

Got another mind bongler with my first time flashing. I'm using titanium backup and since I'm gonna flash from stock note 2 with touchwiz to CM with vanilla android, am I supposed to backup all user apps + system data? I've read that if you restore touchwiz apps and Samsung closed network apks onto a phone without touch wiz or the stock rom it might mess your phone up or put it in a loop. So... 1)do I back up everything and then when I restore do I only select my user apps(apps ive downloaded) and system data(sms, contacts, etc)? Or do I restore everything on to my phone after I wiped and flashed? 2) are the red labeled apps the apps I'm supposed to not restore? Do I restore the white, green and yellow labled apps only? This is all on titanium backup premium edition! Thank you for the help!
NEVER RESTORE SYSTEM APPS. It will mess up your phone especially if it replaces important things like settings.apk or systemui. Just do your user apps and you should be fine but a lot of people nowadays say its just better to redownload everyting off the play store
Does Cyanogenmod come with no apps? Except for the basic system apps like phone dialer contacts camera etc. And your sure just user apps will be okay? What about my system data? Like messages emails, and call logs?

Ya it only has basic system apps then whatever they are bundling nowadays (focal, cm file manager ect) you need to flash a gaaps package to get the play store, youtube, gmail ect. User apps should be fine. Call logs and messages need to be backed up with a third party app. I think you can back up messages to a .xml in tibu. Email should auto back up and redownload when you sign in
Call logs and messages can be backed up with titanium, and restored. I do it all the time.

You can backup and restore your non-system apps, the ones downloaded from the Play Store for example, but you shouldn't restore the app data until you know what you are doing (some will work, some won't) - apk's only.
You definitely don't want to backup and restore system apps as mentioned above.
You can backup and restore text messages, phone log and such, but not settings etc.
Don't bother with calendar entries and contacts, they should be backed up and restored by Google
