R800at update question - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im rooted with locked bootloader and I have removed most bloatware. I know I now can not update via ota because I removed system apps. Can I still update via pc companion?
What are other options to be able to update?
Sent from my R800at using XDA App

Will the repair feature in pc companion reflash it or is that more like a factory reset?
Or is the update service tool what I want that actually makes you turn of phone and hold back key to get into flash mode
Sent from my R800at using XDA App

You can still update with a computer, but you will lose root. To get root back after, use the one-click zergrush method, that can be found in the xperia play development section of forums.
Also, I believe PC companion flashes the update completely, it's not like a reset.
And doing a factory reset through the phone doesn't restore apps, so don't bother trying that.
Alternatively, you can use flashtool to flash an updated stock ROM, but that will make all your settings and data reset.

Awesome thanks knowing I van still update on the pc with companion is good enough for me, thanks.
Do you know if bloatware will be restored when I update on the pc?
Sent from my R800at using XDA App

Here is the stock firmware
multiupload.com/B9CI6MH39N
Sent from my R800at using XDA App

It will be restored, but you can root easily with zergrush and remove it again.
Also if that's an ftf file you need flashtool, that isn't for PC companion. X10 flashtool by bin4ry and androxhyde to be exact.

Unlocked bootloader and OTA Updates?

Hey guys had a few problems when modding my cousins Xperia play, I unlocked the bootloader and got it up and running no problems. But I also read if you have an unlocked bootloader you can't update with Over the air updates, is that true, if so, do I have to re-lock the bootloader in order to get them to work?
Yes,u have to re-lock it for OTAs,but using SEUS or PC companion is fine, but u might have to reset the phone.
Cheers
If you update using any method that isn't a manual flash, be prepared to brick the phone. Re-locking the bootloader is possible, but if I were you I would just flash newer firmware.
Sent from Silent Earth 3
Thanks for the reply, I was thinking about flashing something newer manually, hopefully it will stop the "there are updates available "messages for my cousin. Wish I didn't bother rooting the phone for him now

Root Without Fastboot

Right, problem is, my PC has finally decided to stop doing what what it's supposed to. More specifically, it doesn't put my phone in fastboot mode anymore.
My question is, how do I root on the latest GB firmware? If I root on when .42 firmware, can I flash the .64 firmware while unticking the kernel option? Is that where root is?
I can usually do stuff without asking questions, but this problem is quite specific and couldn't find an answer Google-ing.
Sent from my R800i using XDA
Flash the rootxperia.zip in recovery. Then, uninstall superuser and install a newer version of it from google play/market. Press thanks if I helped.
Note: This can be used on any Gingerbread firmware. Also, root will not carry over if you use flashtool.
Can I flash the .64 firmware then flash that?

No No no! Root Does Not make Fastboot work, fastboot is Enabled only on Generic or Devices That have had a SEMCBoot Patch. Your PC is not the Problem Its your Device or Just you.

Sounds like a USB cable problem, or maybe a USB port problem.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk 2
It's a USB port problem.
I was using the dsixda kitchen when my computer switched itself off. I tried the same thing and it switched off at exactly the same point. Ever since then my main USB port stopped working (it was working minutes before). I can't get the drivers for fastboot installed on the other USB port.

I was just about to flash .62 firmware, when I had a thought. How do I get recovery installed without root? Will the auto installer from the market work, or does that need root?

no regardless you need root which is just a simple click you can't get CWM without it the auto staller will not work if you do not have root because it needs su permission
The only way to get root on the .62 firmware with a locked bootloader is to flash .42 and then flash the .62 firmware .zip file which is buried somewhere in android development. Since you can't flash a custom kernel(which root your rom anyways) you can't get into recovery on .62 as installing recovery requires root.
My bootloader is unlocked.
Sounds like a catch 22 situation.
I'll just stick with what I'm on now and wait for an ICS FTF.

It's not a big enough problem to get everything set up on somebody else's computer.
Does anybody know what the driver is called? Maybe I'm going to the wrong folder when trying to manually update it.
Also, when I uninstall the drivers, I get the S1 Boot (or whatever it's called) thing installed but that changes to something like SEMCflash. Is that supposed to happen? Because I read that you need update the S1 one, which disappears/gets replaced.
Sent from my R800i using XDA
If you root it, then OTA, you keep root. Only problem is you can't OTA with an unlocked bootloader.
Try with a different PC?
The drivers are on the Sony unlock site.
I can't install the drivers because the S1boot thing changes to SEMCflash. I get told that it contains no info about my phone or it can't find a better match.

You should be able to override Windows:
Update Driver Software -> Browse my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer -> Have disk

I've tried that, that's when I get the messages. When I choose the driver file it says it doesn't contain any information about my device.
I did the same thing with my other USB port and it worked fine til it broke. So why it wont work I have no idea. I still don't know how cooking a ROM can break a USB card.

Update w/o losing root?

hello.. my current fw is .431 and there is a new update 587
how to install new update w/o losing root?
I believe if you update OTA you can keep root.
For me, I just relocked my bootloader, flashed stock image, used pc companion to update to new firmware, then unlocked bootloader, flashed stock kernel with cwm from old firmware. Then used old root tutorials to get root then flashed my kernel of preference.
Easy right?
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium
it's Easy
if you're on locked bootloader
OTA update will keep your root..,
or if it didn't reach you OTA flash the firmware with flashtool
and it's the same root method for .431 ..,with .587 kernel of course
or if you are with an unlocked bootloader
flash the firmware with flashtool
then flash the advanced kernel .587 ..,you'll find it in the development section
after that flash superuser with CWM from here
hope i helped you =)
^^^^That guy was much more helpful you should thank him

OTA is the short form for Over The Air i.e. updating via WiFi or using data on your mobile.

But if you can update via OTA how?
lately on the .431 FW i tried to update it via wifi.. but still it ask me to update it via pc companion.
"You need to plug pc companion in order to update" it says something like that...
but take note that some countries don't have the the new base available via OTA. only method is PC companion.

I have problem updating OTA. When it finishes downloading and I tap install, it reboot the logo appear that is updating but when reboot to home screen it says that could not update. My phone is rooted. I didn't install cwm, only bisybox.
My status:
Code:
- .431 with wotanserver
- Unlocked bootloader using testpoint keeping trackid (Omnius)
- stock firmware + CWM
- Rooted using Superuser
- Some system apps uninstalled.
If I try to update through OTA it makes the first boot and says "Error updating"
What shall I do?
Relock the bootloader? (in this case shall I pay to unlock it again?)
Backup all with titanium, use wotanserver with new version and root again?
Restore all deleted apps and OTA?
Thanks, and sorry, I could not find the proper answer.
To arcuser,
I know what you mean.I tried it as well a couple of days before your first post.Didnt happen. But later in the evening there was a notification from Sony Ericsson via Update Centre on the device that an update was available via WiFi.Clicked on the notification and sweetas iam on build 4.1.B.0.587.
That's the only change that happened and yes the screen comes on faster when you are about to make calls.

Hi!, apart from what you mention, there are more improvements, some of them led notification works better than before, people say it's has less bugs than prior ones.
I've also same trouble, the upgrade is available by OTA but when you download and install it, it reboots and show you an icon and a message indicating it didn't upgraded. It looks that it consider prior installed version and when it upgrades it needs pure sony kernel and rom, otherwise you receive the message. And also, if you do in the other way.. this is upgrade with pc companion you loose your root, so the current solution seems to be going back to . A.0.562 -next to B.0.431 and the root and finally upgrade with OTA b.0.587. This is what people say that works, some guys did it and works, but it is a pain in your but doing all these steps.. so does anyone knows any other way of doing it?

Bootloader is different than getting ics. If I remember correct if bootloader is unlocked, Sony pcc or update service will not work. You sure your still locked?
Does flashtool find your phone? If not try there drivers.
Sounds stupid but you did reboot after installing pcc / Seus?

Ya I rebooted million the bootloader is definetly locked I was just wondering about that because it's not updating so I was thinking about just rooting and flashing ics but I hate how it deletes all ure stuff.

Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
Tried it but everytime I enter flashmode on my device it will try to install a driver and then it will say the device has disconnected and the battery charging thing pops up then the driver fails to install happens on Sus seus flashtool everything sooooo annoyiiing

Did you let the flash driver load before you tried flashing?? If you connect the device in flashmode and let the driver install in Windows then unplug the device. It should now work.
That's the problem tho the driver will not install I went to the Sony store and it worked fine on his computer. I'm gonna try again later because I'd like to root my phone

You can try installing android sdk to get drivers for ADB. You can try the old way to root using ADB not flashtool. Just use the ftf of your choice for ics.

This sounds more like a problem with your particular PC, than with the phone itself...
update wasn't available so i flashed with flashtool on a GB LT28AT. Got absolutely no where for several hours. No matter what i tried, flashtool refused to recognize the phone. I had tried before installing companion, after installing, after uninstalling...installing stock mass storage drivers...holding down and plugging the phone in while flash tool was installed...while it wasn't installed...installing some of the flashtool drivers (of which the ion was never a phone listed), installing all of the flashtool drivers, uninstalling all drivers, rolling back windows, installing some drivers from flashtool...that weren't quite what i had installed before..........etc...
then magically...I'm just sitting there with flashtool open at its log box. I plugged the phone in...again...while holding down volume key, and i get a notice that 'S1 Boot Driver successfully installed'. press the lightning bolt expecting the same result...90 seconds later my phone boot up with the ICS welcome screen...how i got that S1 boot thing to initiate? your guess is as good as mine, but its definitely key for getting a windows PC to flash an lt28.
Something must be blocking it question is what lol I have gotten a notice about that too it says something may be blocking it or the driver has no devices associated with it

Getting your Phone back to a factory state DOES NOT require you to be rooted or have an unlocked bootloader, the thing that's lacking here is reading, and persistence. You need to figure out getting PC Companion, SEUS, or the Flashtool (Official and un-Official) to work, so as you know what to do, it's over to you to do it, and if it's not working then you're obviously doing something wrong.
i personally prefer flashtool. simple to use and doesnt require root or unlocked bootloader if you're flashing stock ftf.
