I currently have a HTC Desire and am considering upgrading to an Xperia Arc S. I've read as many reviews and threads as I can and there are a number of things that are putting me off. If anyone could comment I would be very welcome.
Cracks in the case. I know this is an issue with the Arc but does the Arc S also suffer from this?
Auto-brightness. Is it true that no auto-brightness settings exist with the stock ROM? I would miss this feature.
Awkward camera shutter and power buttons. Do people find this to be much of an issue?
Screen scratching easily? One review I read today claimed the screen scratches easily. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks in advance.
Noone reported cracks on Arc S - yet
Autobrightness is activated by default
camera is great
What scratches is the screen protector that's applied from se in the factory, not the screen.

I have just moved from the desire to the arc s myself last week
To answer some of the questions.
Auto brightness..... I'm not convinced it is as automatic as some people say, or if there is One at all. Settings always show what I have inputted, and I don't notice any dimming/ brightening.
The main reason for this of course is to preserve battery and I can say that with similar is to the desire my battery is lasting at least 12 hours longer.
Power button isn't a problem at all, but the camera button is very small, and almost impossible to use with a case...... Most phones don't have a camera button to complain about though!
Auto brightness works perfect, it just doesn't work in aggressive way.
I personally don't find the power button to be tricky but I have heard of others that do think it is. If you find that to be the case though there's a number of widgets out there you can use to lock the screen or power off or reboot the device anyway so I don't think that matters.
Same with the camera button... You can opt to take a photo by touching the screen if you like so if the physical button does elude you there's always an alternative.
The power button is better then HTC because to turn it on you don't have to press the top button

True, but as is the case with the camera button etc, you dont have to. infact most roms built in (sensibly) that you could use the home button to wake the screen.
As said above, I am not dissapointed with the switch from desire to ARC S.
Incidentally, what HTC would you say is most similar to the ARC S?

I believe the Arc is 3rd in android maybe 4th nowhere near the top and the new flagship for Sony is still behind, sorry Sony fans but Sony is coming up very short!

At best that is true. I would suggest it is even lower than that for android phones....maybe 5-6th.
HTC wise I would say it is between the desire s and the sensation, both of which are not at the top of the pile anymore
I've had my Arc S for a week (replacement for my abused x10!). I was going to wait for Sonys Dual core offerings but figured I'd be waiting another year so went for the Arc.
Sods law we have leaked footage of Nozomi on the forum this evening :/
Anyway.. first impressions of the Arc S:
Build: not the greatest, feels light, plastic and delicate, but after an hour got used to it and now love how it sits in the hand.
Controls: Power button is a pain imho. I always need to use 2 hands, otherwise it feels like I might drop the thing trying to use the power button one handed.
Screen: Love love love... dont care what people say about the Super Amoleds (too saturated for my liking) the Arc screen is a joy!!
Camera: Great improvement over the x10. people at work were wow'd with video..
edit: p.s. what ever you go for is only going to be top dog for about 3 months tops anyways
I've had the ARC S for a month now.
The power button IS, IMHO, the worst button I've ever had to use on a phone. It's miniscule, and is really hard to press one handed. Turning ON the screen is easy, you can press the home button, but turning it off is really tricky.
Not had ANY issues with the casing or the screen. I got a screen protector in the box with mine, and it's THE best protector I've ever seen. Went on immaculately, no bubbles or blemishes. Superb. I have bought a case for mine though, I like to keep my handsets as mint condition as possible, plus it helps grip the phone.
The camera is great. Dumps all over any HTC one I've used before. It's on a par with my mates iphone4s, the video is not as good, but then again, the 4s is 1080p HD. Not had a chance to compare it with the SGS2 or the Sensation yet.
The auto-brightness is always ON, and works a charm. It's the only smartphone I've used that can still be read in full sunshine!

Actually, you're right! I can see the edges of both of you look REAL close! How stupid of Sony NOT to tell you this!

I have heard a few people mention that their replacement phones don't suffer from the same hinge problem - that HTC might actually be fixing this issue in production and newly produced phones won't have loose hinges...anyone have any thoughts?
On a side note... I played with my phone yesterday when i got it, and despite the hinge (mines loose too), i was able to type upside down (and any other which way) because of the way my hands grip the phone - they keep the hinge in place, i bet many other users will be the same way.

FWIW: I'm on the side of "that's the way it's supposed-to/designed-to be". So it won't be "fixed" since there's nothing broken.
BUT: It's irrelevant if it's supposed to be that way or not -- all that matters is if the user likes it that way.
So: I tried the floor/display unit in a T-Mo store, deployed the keyboard and held the phone as I might if typing while reclining/in-bed, with the plane of the phone vertical and then tilted slightly beyond vertical towards me...and the screen flopped down/closed.
I held the phone the same way I hold my current TP2 when typing on the keyboard: with my index fingers wrapped behind the keyboard, not touching the screen. So...for me it seems like it would be a bit of a problem...or at least a downside. For someone who doesn't hold the phone like I do -- someone who supports the screen with their fingers -- it probably wouldn't be an issue.
YMMV.
Issue or not -- I doubt that future batches will change...until/unless they change the design.

The problem is, there is two clear distinct hinge conditions in the market now, as evidence in Youtube vids. One condition is loose hinge, where by holding it upside down by the lower half will cause the upper half to swing down, and the other condition is that its tight and will not swing down. This leads me to believe that the problem is more in manufacturing because if its design, it should exhibit only one condition all the time.
The phone is not supposed to flop down like that. I checked one out at the store, held it horizontal and it didn't budge.
My replacement doesn't budge when held upside down with the keyboard out.. it does do it when i have my gel case on but stays in place when the case is off.

I hope you guys are right, 'cause this "issue" is actually making me drag my feet about buying it...and this is the only new phone on the horizon that meets my needs (high-end with hardware keyboard on T-Mobile USA that's not WP7).
The only reason I'm not convinced yet (even though I'd like to believe) is that several people have posted that their hinge started out "firm" and then got looser.
In any case, it will be early-November before I buy so I bet that the "truth" -- whatever it is -- will be evident by then.
mine was tight when I got it, and magically later that same day, became extremely loose with no precursor
I don't think anyone can really say with certainty how the hinge is supposed to work. It does seem to be a prevalent "issue". I got a replacement phone (for an issue unrelated to the hinge), the replacement also has a loose hinge just like my first one. And as some people reported, even some units in T-Mobile stores have loose hinges.
I personally like G1's hinge much better. Wish G2 had the same type of hinge

I hated the G1 hinge, and personally like the design of the hinge over then more common slide, but we will have to see its longevity, right now the hinge issue isn't a major concern, the screen doesn't open crocked or have excessive play from side to side when opened, just opens to easily which I can live with
I have my second G2 and in my case both of the phones were loose to start. The one I received 2 days ago has loosened even more in spite of the fact that I hardly ever deploy the keyboard. While in a restaurant last night I had the G2 lying on the table and I reached over to pick it up and the keyboard just slid out. Which is way too loose for me. I am requesting a replacement because of this and also very poor or defective radio. This is a very good phone and I dont want to give up on it but only time will tell.
I've had my G2 since the release date and my hinge is strong. It doesn't flop down on its own. Even when I'm lying down the screen stays up on its own. Some are loose and others aren't.

why did you hate the G1 hinge? I've had G1 since it was first launched. It was (is still) sturdy.
My hinge is a little loose, if I hold it by the keyboard and give it a light shake it the screen drops about 3/16 of an inch. Now when the screen is open it will never close. I use the keyboard a lot and it doesn't seem to affect how loose it is.

I can do all the stuff you did in ur video and my hinge is loose. You were being very gentle with it. One shake and you know what would have happened lol.
That being said the hinge doesn't effect usage AT ALL. I'm also getting faster on this keyboard... at first I hated it because the G1 KB is better imo. ALso the modified HTC_IME virtual keyboard in the Nexus forum puts the iOS vk to shame.

mine seems loose too, it might jus be normal...I hope tmobile and htc are reading these kinda threads and they need to say something if its normal!
now on the other hand, has anyone read anything about the desire z? i mean its the same phone, does it have the same problems?
Here's a picture of a 2 G2s (I ordered a replacement and they are side by side). Which one has better hinges?

Both open fairly easily by the way. I'm convinced this is by design.
The one on the right? The one on the left, the screen part seems to drop down to the right more.. the right G2, the screen is flat..

Yep, the one on the right is the replacement and the one I am keeping. Mind you both will open if I pick them up holding the top/bottom half alone. I think we should all stop obsessing about this and enjoy the phone. That's what I am planning to do now.
Yeah, my G2 hinge is one of the loosest I've seen.. but luckily for me it doesn't hamper me at all in normal usage. If it does in the future I will get a replacement since I have the premium insurance plan.. but for now I'm loving it!
I believe the S3 has the best solution of face buttons for 2 reasons.
On screen buttons increase the width of the phone since the screen has to follow an aspect ratio. If the S3 had on-screen buttons it would have a 5" screen which would not make the phone taller but it would make it wider. Buttons on the other hand are independent and just fit into the width of the phone as it is.
Secondly having a hardware home button is just better in my opinion. You wont ever accidentally press it and you can use it to unlock the screen. You still have the capacitive back and multi-tasking button for seamless touch experience.
Ofcourse the menu button is the issue with this layout but it isnt samsung's fault, it's just not implemented in apps so far. Just my 2 cents on the issue feel free to disagree.

I have several times on my nexus S hit the capacitive home button when I didnt intend to. It also happens even more when you are showing someone your phone and while exchanging the phone a button gets pressed.
I know not everyone uses a case, but IMO they should. That said, the first thing I thought after banging my head on my desk when I saw the SIII was "how the hell is Otterbox gonna cover that?".

Yes, yes it can. Just set it to "long press", problem solved.
I think the BEST solution would be to replace the home button on the nexus with a search button and place a physical home button at the bottom no?
Not only the accidental touch but waking up the screen is also a huge advantage of a hardware home button.

Can it be done only for the home button? It would nevertheless bring a new problem that it takes long to execute. With a hardware button it's instant and yet never accidental.

I don't think on screen buttons would make the phone screen WIDER like said. They can just make the buttons whatever size they want.

Consider this.
If galaxy nexus had a 4.4" screen with buttons, it would be narrower. The idea that cutting down buttons and putting screen in place of it does not increase phone size isnt entirely correct.

Do you even have a Nexus? The phone buttons are narrower than the rest of the screen. Nothing requires the screen to be wider.
The only possible good use for Samsung's layout is that you don't get the single centered menu button like what happens on the HTC One X. However, I have achieved the same thing on AOKP using the built in nav bar mods.
The software nav bar is also better for compatibility with old apps. Most of the 2.2/2.3 apps were built for 5:3 aspect ratio, causing them to get stretched out of proportion on 16:9 screens. With the nav bar you maintain 5:3 viewable space for old apps, and it can be hidden for apps that need the whole screen.
Software buttons are way more versatile, end of story. Google can change the standard layout for the nav buttons all they want, and Nexus users will have no difficulty adapting. Everyone else is screwed.

I am not saying the buttons need the space. Okay try to understand this. What do you think would happen if we were to give the galaxy S3 face buttons and use the space occupied by the buttons for the screen? You know you cant just increase the screen size in one direction, it is diagonal or else the screen would end up in a weird aspect ratio.

Not a fan of big phones, I find 4-4.3" perfect. The galaxy nexus is already pushing it for me and no way could I use something like the S3 as my daily driver. I have small hands.
It's not the height of a phone which bothers me but the width the more of it and the more a phone gets uncomfortable to grip.

Well considering that the keys can hide when not in use, and the app is coded for it, it is a pretty moot point. The phone is not 1280x720 WITHOUT the buttons. It is 1280x720 including the buttons. So yeah, the actual used resolution for the rest of the screen is not entirely a 720p resolution when the buttons are present. I think that is where you might be getting confused.
I have had my GN2 for about 1 week. Yesterday I noticed there is a scratch on the screen. It goes from the home button about half way up the screen. I honestly don't know how it happened. I have babied this thing since day one.
I previously had a Motorola Atrix 4G for 2 years. The screen on it is still pristine with excessive daily use.
Will AT&T replace this in the first 14 days or is it my fault and I'm s.o.l.?
I love this device, it really bugs me that it's already scratched.
This post isn't to bash the GN2's screen, more of a warning to other users so they don't end up like me. Guess I will buy a screen protector asap next time.

Exact same thing happen to mine. It had a eyelash size scratch by the volume rockers 4 days after purchase. I too babied the thing. Fortunately my sales rep at the local store is a friend also so I stopped by and asked just because well I just dropped hella $$ I don't want a scratch. I just told him hey...I've had these since day ONE of the Nexus1 many of devices and no scratches to that extent. He replaced it for me, I just gave him all old and returned for new. Just ask....also being a long time customer like me doesn't hurt. BTW it was within the 14 days also!
after watching youtube vids, the first thing i did after leaving store was run a car key across it several times. the key just glided across no scratch what so ever

I love this device, it really bugs me that it's already scratched.
This post isn't to bash the GN2's screen, more of a warning to other users so they don't end up like me. Guess I will buy a screen protector asap next time.

If you put a good screen protector on now, the scratch will more than likely disappear. Same thing happened to my One X and it is now 100% invisible.

Had mine for 20 days now, no scratches
Do you put your phone in your pocket? one of this things that will diffidently scratch you phone is sand. So id their is just a few grains of sand in you pocket it could easily scratch you screen.
I always use a horizontal hips case for my phone. Before my cae arrived I kept my Note II in my pocked wrapped in a large microfiber cloth. Not a single scratch.
Yes I do keep the phone in my pocket. Like I said I kept my previous phone in my pocket for 2 years with no problems. Guess this phone is a lot bigger and moves around more in the pocket as I walk.
Hopefully the scratch will disappear with a screen protector. Hope it doesn't create air bubbles where the scratch is.

Or perhaps you somehow got sand in your picket somehow and togeather with the large screen you where just unlucky. Who know, just a hypothesis. I just know sand is a common thing that will easily scratch a screen.
I'm especially careful when I put the phone in my pocket to shield it with my hand to avoid contact with a jacket zipper or with the metal snaps that some of my pants pockets have at either end. And of course I reserve that (front) pocket for my phone exclusively. No scratches yet.
Small fine scratch for me too...I had a post up about best screen protector to use and many people said its got Gorilla Glass you dont need a screen protector....I beg to differ...Hense my scratch...Screen protectors couldnt come quick enough
After watching some scratch test videos I'm wondering if its a scratch or a hairline crack in the glass. Its hard to tell and I can definitely feel it when going over it with the s-pen or a fingernail.

If you use jeans 99% of the time (like me ) you might want to be extra careful when sliding in or out your phone from the locket of the jeans because most jeans have "metal decorations" (look at the picture I provided) embedded on them. That can potentialy scratch your device.

I can relate. My first note 2 had thinner them hair thick scratch on the screen. I ended up getting the phone replaced cause I was having a problem with the phone restarting on me all the time. .. That fixed the scratch lol. Now this phone had the same thickness scratch on the screen somewhere else. . Sucks. Screen protector is in the mail for delivery today. ..
Take it to at t and complain that it's resetting on you and see if they replace it and slap a screen protector on it
I have 2 tiny scratches.... like hold it at the right angle and you can see it. I went ahead and put a screen protector on it.
I had trouble with the first note being dropped in the store on the counter. The lock button would stick and always ask if I wanted to restart etc so I got it replaced but not before I noticed that the coating easily had worn off the glass about 1/2 inch above the home button. I've read that coating is the main scratch prevention and the only thing that even touched my screen was my thumb or the pen. It got a noticeable amount rougher, by pen or finger and if I would breathe on it to fog it over it was visibly different than the rest of the glass. Just a little thumb width streak running across the phone. My friend has a gs3 and has a large visible patch that's much the same. Too many thumb burnouts I guess. It seems to me that oleophobic or whatever coating is pretty fragile and if that helps prevent scratching it doesn't seem to last long, at least that is what I have heard about the coating anyway. I ran out and got a screen protector asap for this one and so far so good. Just avoid the zagg anti smudge if you ever use the pen.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has successfully changed their HOX's colour from black to white or vice versa?
I have heard that the back slides off if you break the glue seal and I've seen vids on Youtube where people appear to be using a guitar pick to do this. Is this a safe method and will it go back together (and stay together) afterwards? It looks like the back will always be a bit loose afterwards. I'd like to know if anyone has tried this and what happened. I saw some white backs on ebay for £20 but not sure if it's just a case of swapping them over or if there is anything to attach first, like wires etc.
Has anyone seen/tried any white stickers like you get for the iphone? I'd prefer this method if the stickers were good quality and not tacky.
Thanks

I´ve just changed mine from grey to Hox+ cover. Its easy to remove the back and its fits tide if you replace it. I guess the change from white to grey or grey to white is some you can do without any problem. If you want to change from normal to Hox+ you have to do some http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NXyCNJaLSY stuff for that, because not all clips are the same like in the original back.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1825853
Looks like it's been done before without any major problems, though I suppose there's a slight risk of knocking something that doesn't like being knocked while you're poking around trying to get the back off. Definitely worth watching a few tutorials that show how to take it all apart safely before trying it yourself
Changed mine to white. Easy, though I'd took it apart before to fix the WiFi issue.
Just remove the sim tray, and pop it apart. Oh and remember to swap the speaker over into the new cover.
You pop the bottom part off first, then run your nails or a guitar plectrum around the edges, then pull it free from the top (slides out from the top bit).
Oh and its more secure than it was before, there's double sided tape inside the new cover around the edges etc.
I'll try and find the link on eBay where I got mine... Some are fake, this sellers selling genuine parts. Was 25 quid.
Edit - http://r.ebay.com/9ouETu
Keep in mind that there is not always a SIM-Tray (Holder) included. So either make sure there is one included or you know a source where to get one... a white hox with a grey sim-tray looks crappy imo !
There is with the link I added. Everything included.

Sorry I forgot to ask, the inside of the cover in the link you posted looks like it has lots of metal plates and things on it, does this mean there is anything I'll need to connect to the main part of the phone when swapping covers, or is it literally just a case of sliding the new cover on and that's it?
Thanks again

Yea they connect by the pressure of the 2 parts being clipped together. So just swap them over, theres nothing to connect youself, but remember to take the double sided sticky off the inside of the new one.
The only thing you have to swap is the speaker, that just pops out.
The hardest thing is pulling the two parts apart after youve unclipped the bottom/edges, cos of the double sided stickey.
As long as you dont rush it and your careful youll be fine.
Theres loads of vids about explaining that bit anyway.
I do prefer it white, plus the camera lens is new aswell which is nice, bargain for 25 quid!

I did that today. Changed my black/grey hox, with the white One X+, and no, it is not a straight fit. For your own hearts sake, I would not recommend this.. It does require some nasty dremmeling in the bottom of the cover, which I almost ****ed up.

Hi I got my oppo Find7a while on a business trip to China 2 weeks ago (348 euro)
I made the mistake of exchanging a perfect midnight black with a white one because the back was so slippery that in the first 10 minutes of use I dropped my phone on the couch twice!
On the white one the volume and power button are poorly fitted and rattle a lot.
Also the screen has on the lower right corner a yellow/orange tint apparent from the first time I turned on the device!
Apart from those minor issues my major complaint is the contrast of the screen which is lacking compared to my HTC one M7 (sharp panel) I currently use. In comparison it makes the screen look a bit dull like my nexus 7 2013 which also has a jdi made panel.
Camera and sound are awesome and I don't care about battery life since we have the insanely fast charging.
This is the only thing that is holding me back from claiming Find 7a the perfect phone.
I guess at this price point you can not complain.

I have to say im impressed with the phone. The yellow patch on the screen goes away, leave the phone full brightness and playing a video, heat the screen up, its just the glue, had many a phone with the issue.
The button's do rattle on the white one, cant speak for the black, but not a massive issue for me. The screen looks slightly off to me as well, until i removed the factory screen protector, like night and day, have a nice glass protector on it now.
Fast charging is insanley cool. I get great battery life out of mines, but its nice to quick charge.
I have to say the phone phisically is perfect for me, its the software and lack of available customization that is the issue, but cyanogen should fix that

Screen protector was a hard sheet of thick plastic that makes the display look bad.

I only wish for the yellow tint on the lower part of the screen to go away and I have the perfect phone!

I'm a bit gutted really. After reading user reports about the build quality of the find 5, I was hoping that the find 7 would be a massively premium phone - this seems not to be the case as people keep describing it as amazing considering it's not a premium device.

You got it all wrong the Find7a is a premium device !!!
Even phones costing triple and even more have small annoyances.
Oppo Find 7a is a very honest device no gimmics!
My white handset has neither the loose keys nor the yellow issue. The hardware does not look cheap and in fact has a premium vibe but isn't up to the standards of an M8. But then this is the down tempo device, the 7 would be a better price competitor and it is reported to have a more upscale feel with its carbon fiber (look) backplate. Meanwhile the reviews I've seen tend to place the OPO and Oppo as about on par in terms of perceived quality.
I would be a lot more worried about the horrid standby and bad battery life in general. If you're used to modern cell phones its going to catch you by surprise. I would be looking to see if the OPO has this mess with the radios and other low level software issues cleaned up and lean that direction if they did. I wouldn't buy either if it didn't until such time as they fix one or the other.
There is a lot to love about this phone, the hardware is excellent and even Color OS is a decent GUI with fun stuff and some legitimately useful ideas although immature. I liken it to a car that you really like but you're never sure if its going to start or if you'll get there. This phone is like that. It's software is not even close to final and you can expect it to shut down, lock up, have unexplained battery losses and such on an infrequent but regular basis.
I'll corroborate to say that my yellow tint went away. The first day I had it I was a little disappointed by it but I figured I would stop noticing it. One reason I bought a phone with such a big screen is to watch my anime on the go, which includes watching it at full brightness when on the bus/glare. I didn't even think that the heating up might address it and checking it again after reading this thread it appears the tint is gone.
I've also had some weird flip flopping with standby time. For the first week, it would only drain 3% overnight, but for the last 2 days, it's been draining 10-12% overnight, and then as of tonight, it barely drained again. I'm not really sure what's going on but there are definitely some weird little software issues that need to be cleaned up. If nothing else, Entropy and the others seem geared up to get Omnirom going

The pre-installed screen protector is a common thing among some smartphone manufacturers. Sony also does it with their Xperia line, my friends Xperia S also came with a pre-installed screen-protector, and i don't know why you're saying it looks bad with the screen protector, it doesn't the only thing the screen protector may have has a step back is that fingerprints and grease from your hands get on the screen much quicker. Anyway, it is a quality screen protector, cheap ones scratch very easily, this doesn't. If you want to buy another one, buy one of those made of glass, those are supposed to be great.
My Find 7a came with a yellow tint also, i've already started playing District 9 via Plex on full brightness .

I tried this today, ran a YouTube video for about 2hrs at full screen brightness but doesn't seem to have made any difference. I will try again this eve and run it for longer, but would be interested to hear from others to see if it works for them?
So the general consensus is that the screen looks much better with the factory protector removed?
I got my device yesterday and have to say I love it. I was very impressed with it the second I took it out of the box and felt it in my hand. I knew it would be a nice device as I owned the Find 5 as well but it was much nicer than I had imagined. The build quality is top notch. My buttons do not rattle but they do have some play in them but then again the Nexus 5 buttons had some play, a lot of HTC m8 buttons have some play. As long as the button isn't falling off who cares if it has some play?

Hi, agree in some points,
so in direct comparison to the Find5 screen the Find7a Screen is not that good, (for me) very too blueish, not good black color, weird pixel densitiy (maybe this is up on my still existing screen protector where i think i cannot read super small text which is no issue on the find5) and the yellow tinty glue on the bottom side.
I just rund benchmarks for 2 hours, yellow tinty get little faded but still visible also i used a hair dryer some minutes (not on full heat and really careful and with battery out of the device) which makes the very hard things disappear, but still not yet in full, also i´m absolutely not wanted to do such things as customer when i receive a new device ;o)
I will give it a try with the "long hour video playback" this evening, else i send it back tomorrow in hope to receive a device which has a little warmer display and with biggest focus without the tinty stuff (which is a no go).
From all other sides for me the find7a is nearly perfect and i find it better than find5, find7a is awesome (size / sound / performance / colorOS in the meantime), the build quality is also okay, but find5 was little more ahm - unique / premium feel in hand, but also heavy for its size.

Sir, if I'm not asking too much, please compare camera quality of this phone with other(if you have of course). As I've seen on reviews, camera of this phone is great. I'm looking to renew my phone and my decision is LG G3 or Oppo find 7(a), or 1+1 if will be available to buy without invitation. Thanks
