Guys, Skyraider Release 1 Rom is up on team bamf's and roots. Just a head up for the flash junkies.

Actually, V1.1.1 has just been released - updating just a few minor issues, got mine downloading now. It's full wipe .... arrrrrh, the sweet smell of smoked bacon.
Wow, with a few personalized tweaks added, it's amazing .... it's Applewood slow-smoked bacon, perfection.
Well thank you for the update. Would have seen it sooner or later.

Yay, switched over earlier than RMK's GingerSense and running the latest for over a week, very stable, smooth, responsive & fast, virtually bullet-proof. Preview announced for upcoming verison, with more tweaks & enhancements from Sense 3.0/3.5, scheduled for Nov. 15th.
Can also followup development on twitter, check out their dedicated site for details (also, nice work for TBolt's)

I'm not positive but there is nothing sense 3.5 in his ROM, and the tweaks he makes are his own, not from 3.0 or 3.5.. Just curious if you have some different info I don't have

from what i gather he is adding in more of his own tweaks yeah
afaik there is very little from sense 3.5 that can be brought to 2.1 at all (aside from spoofing dropbox into thinking ur on a sense 3.5 and giving u an extra 3 gb of storage)
for hybrids there is a limited amount of what can be ported in without completely remaking the framework and base of the rom..and at that point might as well just work on sense 3.0/3.5
then again, if anyone could do something not accomplished before ihtfp would be at the top of the list
Skyraider runs great. Best hybrid ROM out there and the best Sense 3.0 experience while keeping full GSM capability. It even has 3.0 messaging look and feel.
Been running this for a few days now. Very stable and no problems at all.

What makes you prefer Baked Snack? I'm not doubting your choice, just curious what makes it better than the others.
Been using Calk's builds for a long time now. Seems my taste in ROMs is very similar to his. Keep in mind "the best" is extremely subjective.

Of course... It seems there are a few popular ones out there, and then a lot of "second tier" ROM's. What makes Calk's builds "the best" for you?

I like the combination of performance and battery life of the kernel he chose to use. He also does an awesome job getting a bunch of graphical changes for the "cool" factor too.
Beyond the ROM, Calk contributes a lot of other things to the community. He's been making kitchen and kitchen development tools for the Windows Mobile groups for a while and I was very pleased to see him come to the Android team at the same time I made the leap. It's a big change for people like me that have been Windows Mobile sideline hackers for a while and it's really nice to see a familiar face.

Good info... I'm currently running CM6 and loving it, but I'm torn what to try next... EViO, Baked Snack and VaelPak are all possibilities.
None of the ROM's really have the exact thing I want. Ideally, I'd like a ROM that has the following:
- Sense E-mail App
- Sense Calendar App
- Sense Lock Screen
- Sense Status Bar (with Custom Battery Icon)
- AOSP Contacts & Dialer
- AOSP Messaging (SMS/MMS)
- AOSP Gallery
- 4G Support
- FM Radio
- WiFi/Wired Tether
- Sprint Bloatware Removed (apart from Sprint TV)
- ADK Laucher (easy to add after the fact)
Any ideas on how to get this? I wish I was a Dev... I would build my own

I would think that this wouldn't be that tough. Try starting with a Sense ROM, pull out the dialer/messaging/gallery and whatever else you don't want, then install the AOSP apps you want. I'm sure the apk's can be found around here.

Is it as simple as just uninstalling the Sense apk's that I don't want and installing the AOSP ones? If so, I can probably restore the apps I want from a Titanium backup of CM6. For some reason I thought it was more involved that that - especially with the AOSP Contacts & Dialer.

Agree entirely with Dissenter. Calk brings a lot to the table.
Really enjoyed Hero's early EVO work and Baked is still great. Also used Cyanogen on my G1 forever, but Calk's stuff has been stable, fast and clean (at least for me) as long or longer than anyone else on EVO. It is a beautiful thing. I had problems with most of the other ROMs, but for the EVO, Hero and Calk always seem to have there kitchens working.

So, what would you say are the pros/cons of EViO vs. Baked Snack?
there is a fine line between the "best rom" and my "favorite rom"
best i have had was a stock rooted rom, granted it wasnt fast but it had everything working and no bugs that i could find ...
my fav has been CM6 ... fast and snappy ... but lacking the Fm radio and 4G i disire ...
i have a hard time finding a big difference between sense roms ... but thats just me, i'm slow on this stuff still
I like Fresh 3.2

Ya, where's the love?
I prefer my evo burnt for sure.
modded fresh for me. Dude is on point with his ROMs.
Gotta have my Apps2SD support.
Thinking about coming out with my own ROM based solely off of his as a base.
Evio cured my flashaholic's issues for a while, but with Baked Snack update and the Evio update its tough, i have to give the slight edge to fresh right now because of the new release, that thing is sick. I am pumped once that thing hits the street its going to be on! Too many choices is a good thing as i think the Evo is THE android device to have with all the Dev support
My two cents
1. Fresh 3.28
1.a Evio
1.a Baked Snacks
YMMV

I am on Cyanogen 6.0.1 and is hit by random freeze, twice or thrice a day. Which Android 2.2 ROM is the best in your opinion based on stability? While I do like to have better responsiveness, battery performance etc, stability is very important. Pulling the battery twice or thrice is not what I want to do.
Thank you.

Ruby has definately been the best rom I have used so far. I don't think it will be long and the bugs will be worked out. My battery life is the only thing that has been sub-par on ruby
My favorite has been aiccucs Rom's right now I'm waiting for the newest one to be finished then I'll flash that over the update I received.
Thanks, guys. Ruby has not been listed in the wiki.

Hmmm
Asking this question is exactly like asking "Which religion is the right one" or asking on facebook "Should I get an iPhone or a Droid". It is NEVER a meaningful question.
The most stable rom is the stock one (everything else builds on it anyway, and cookers break things along the way). Anything else is just you flashing away, and making your own decision.

I find it very meaningful. Looked like someone was asking for other people to give their thoughts on what ROMs they liked the best and why. Quite a far cry from NEVER a meaningful question.
Here are some of my insights on the ROMS I have tried ...
Cyanogen 6.02 - Bluetooth voice dialing doesn't work. Voice command audio does not come through the bluetooth headset when activating via the headset button. None of the other froyo based roms have had this issue
SkyRaider 3.0 RC2 - Seemed very stable. I especially enjoyed the "vanilla" version
Virtuous 2.6 - Seemed very stable. I used the Virtuous EZ-Customizer through ROM Manager and it allowed me to remove a lot of the stock apps I did not want. Saved me a good amount of memory. If this ROM had an option to remove SenseUI it would be my #1 choice.
Ruby 1.1.0 - Seemed very stable. Notification LED did not blink but remained lit when notification present.. This may have been a setting I was not aware of.

You can get rid of sense on Virtous. Make sure you download another launcher, i.e Launcherpro. Then use root explorer to delete the rosie.apk. Thats what I did plus I deleted some other things, and I have had no issues what so ever.

Disagree. OP wants to know the best, and no one can answer that. That remains a matter of personal preference, and one persons preference is not anothers.
Perhaps if the OP asked "which ROM do random people like, based on their own personal choices and preferences, at the moment that they post their answer" the question would have made more sense, but then again, the answers would not be useful. Exactly like asking "what is the best national fast food chain."

OK there's no "best" rom because each developer is different and every person like different things so you just have to do your homework start downloading and flashing different roms and you will see the one that's the "best" for you.

Unrevoked3 or Unrevoked Forever? I've never messed with the latter but all it does is switch S-On to S-Off.
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Use caution and do some research before jumping right into all of this hacking and modding. You can really mess your phone up if you don't know what you're doing. (Not saying you don't, this is a "just in case" lol)
Also, I have only used it on PC but I doubt there's much of a difference.
I was wondering if the Sense 3.0 roms that have Gingerbread, are they using the same Gingerbread that we got from the OTA? Or are they using a ported Gingerbread?

I believe they are using a ported GB since most ROMs were made prior to the OTA. They may update their ROMs with the official one over time.

The ROMs with 3.0 ported from the Desire run very smooth. Other than that they run a little laggy, but not bad.
I'm running Sense 3.5 ported from the Bliss at the moment. It's not too laggy but not as snappy as it could be had it been made for a single core device. There's a 3.5 leak which was built for a 1.5ghz phone floating around that may spawn some new ROMs for our beloved Incredible.

As for the two linked to, I have used both and found that Desired Inc runs smoother than Nils' Business Gingersense 3.0. HOWEVER, I would strongly recommend you check out Nils' Business Gingersense 2.1/3.0. It has elements of both versions of Sense and is amazing. It's FAST, has a ton of features, stable, and is very pleasing to the eyes. By far my favorite ROM.

His 2.1/3.0 hybrid has 3.0 widgets and apps whereas the ROM itself is built on a 2.1 base. (I think, don't quote me on it) Either way, it's a damn good ROM.
I've never used Ace Revolution. Nearly everything Joelz puts out gets high praise so you can try it. Some have reported losing root but that can be fixed by restoring an old backup.

His 2.1/3.0 hybrid has 3.0 widgets and apps whereas the ROM itself is built on a 2.1 base. (I think, don't quote me on it) Either way, it's a damn good ROM.

It would be faster to be on the 2.1 right? I was wondering whats faster the Nils rom or the regular stock 2.3?
So, you just rooted your super awesome Android phone, thanks to Rivera82falcon and his awesome guide? You saw my awesome guide for flashing ROMS, and wanted to try it, but didn't know where to begin? Well, you're in the right place.
Also, don't blame me if your phone explodes into a million pieces and one gets stuck in your eye. Nothing you do is my fault. Well, here we go.
STEP ONE: AOSP or Sense?
You probably know what Sense is, but you might not know what AOSP is. It stands for Android Open Source Project. Basically, you are getting a base of stock gingerbread. Now let's talk about the advantages and disadvantages.
AOSP is far faster than most Sense ROMs, and offers more customization as far as themes and kernels. Keep in mind, you can't just install AOSP and put the sense launcher on it. It won't work. With AOSP, you can get Gingerbread, Froyo, or even Ice Cream Sandwich looks for your phone.
Sense, on the other hand, is usually slower, and sometimes offers limited customization when compared to the Theme engines for AOSP. Sense can feel sluggish sometimes, but can be very fast if the ROM is well built. It is not as streamlined as AOSP. On the other hand, you get all the awesome sense apps, like weather, clock, and calendar.
Personally, I switch back and forth between Sense an AOSP. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
STEP TWO: How Much Is Working?
Many people see an awesome looking ROM and it says ALPHA or BETA, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything to people. They flash it and wonder why their radio doesn't work, or why WiFi won't connect. ALPHA ROMs are ROMs that are in the early testing phase and may have key functions broken or missing. Don't go on a vacation with an ALPHA ROM on your phone. Never flash one if you depend on your phone for your job. A BETA ROM is a ROM that is nearing the end of testing. It may still have broken features, but the core functions such as Radio, Data, WiFi, and SMS are often working. Don't flash this ROM if you are expecting a finished product, you will be disappointed. These ROMs are usually fairly slow as well. A vX.x.x ROM (ex: v1.0.1) is released to the public but probably still has some bugs like Bluetooth, MMS, or some other random issues. This ROM still might not be the fastest, but is still easily able to function. Anybody can flash these ROMs. RLSX (ex: RLS1) ROMs are released and are nearly finished. They may have some small bugs or not be fully optimized, but they are nearly perfect. Final ROMs are complete, and you can expect no further changes, usually.
STEP THREE: What Features/Look Does It Have?
Not all Sense and AOSP ROMs are created equal. Many look very different from each other and have very different features. For example, a Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.5 ROM are very different, and CM7 is very different from PoolParty. Read the entire OP and look at any screenshots provided. Make sure you like the look, so you don't waste time flashing it if you hate the look. That said, there is nothing wrong with flashing a ROM just to try it out.

I hope that this was helpful to people. The next guide will be a noob dictionary.
Very nice writeup man. Kudos.

I can vouch for Virtuous Roms. All their work is bug free and visually appealing and user friendly.

I agree Collinjames, the new Affinity ROM is very nice, battery life is insanely good, and it's nearly bug free. My softkeys stopped lighting up so I went back to 2HD RLS1.1
What about including custom kernals AOSP and Sense?
Skyraider Zeus rom is worthy of the incredible, Incredible 2. No bugs which is the most important thing, has never crashed ever on me, that is incredibly important. I don't ever actually use sense exept for the great camera, lockscreen, and weather. But this rom is a no brainer really.
It gives you every option you could think of and has no downside.
I wish this nice little article was up when I was wasting my time trying out buggy roms.
I just feel puzzle about which rom to choose at that moment, thanks a lot for your guide.
liquid 3.x is a good aosp rom as well
Thanks for the post, I like how you broke down the advantages of each.. this has proven to be very helpful.
While i agree with you aosp choices..i think everyone should at least try miui...most customizable rom I've ever used...and looks great with go launcher or launcher pro.

I will add an "other people's recommendations section" soon. Just because I dont necessarily agree with all of these *cough*MIUI*cough*, but I want people to get all the input they can.
Thanks for posting this. As someone who is new to rooting phones this information is very useful.

Yeah, I tried MIUI for a few days. Although I like how customizable it is with all the themes available I found it too buggy. I kept getting lockups and reboots. I hoped the 11.18 release would have helped but it actually made it worse. Also, the lack of an app drawer was very hard to get used to. I'm still not sure I like that concept. I guess it's too iPhone-ish for me.

Sorry but I'm not sure. I would say what ever 11.18 has. I'm still learning all there is to know about rooting so I never paid attention to kernel versions.

I'm running MIUI 1.11.18 right now along with the aerovan .7 bfs kernel. I haven't had a single lockup. Running buttery smooth.

I also run MIUI 1.11.18 an never had any problems I also use areoevan .07bsf kernel. This rom an skyraider are the two most stable roms I have run.

If you try it with a traditional launcher you will love it lol

ok, so since I'm still learning here, when you flash a ROM does the kernel get changed too? Or is this something you have to flash in addition to the ROM?
yes it will change it to which ever kernel the rom
is supplied with. You can find the custom kernel you wish to use an then just flash it after the rom just make sure it's for aosp or sense which ever you choose to run.

Thanks for the explanation. That helps.
So I have been using Deck's ICS ROM for quite a while now. I'm finally getting tired of the random reboots all the time. So I'm looking for a new ROM to use. Looking for something preferably not Sense, but Sense is ok. Wasn't a big fan of CM7. I basically want something that works smooth and reliable. Looking for suggestions. BTW I'm on a Boost Mobile Flashed Evo if that matters at all.
Thanks Ahead of Time!
Tommytomatoe's Classic (Sense and Sense-less as it allows you to remove Sense)
Deck's ReLoaded - Sense-less
Both I have found to be stable and fast.
Doc
MazWoz Beta 6, AOSP ics
Swipers MIUIv4, just look for the thread I started
CM9 - there's two different versions JMZtaylors and Mazdariders both are good

Not a fan of MUIU lol.
Thing with the ICS Beta's is I always seem to have issues. AOKP and EVervolv both gave me some issues so I'm kinda weary of ICS at the moment. Even though that's my favorite so far.
I'll see what they will do for me though. Thanks!
You might also want to check out SOS swaged out stock roms. They are pretty reliable because they are based on ota updates but tweaked to be faster. They have one that's is sense based but no sense UI
Checkout RemICS-UX Port. I flashed it last night and it's smooth as can be
Huge fan of MikG. I finally updated to 3.11 and can't believe I waited so long to jump from whatever version I was running for at least half a year before that. It's so much faster and more stable.
I know it's a Sense rom but I use launcherpro anyway and make it look how I want. Love it love it love.

So I tried Deck's Re-Loaded, its good but not my taste :silly:
Classic I couldn't figure out how to do the Sense-less but I didn't look to hard either.

I'll check those out too. I read a bit on SOS but didn't get to much into it yet.
I flashed Energy Rom last night and it seems to run pretty good.
BTW Thanks for the replies guys. I'm new to this forum, from Phandroid, so it's nice to get some good help.
