[Q] Whatsapp for free? - Galaxy S II Themes and Apps

Is there a way to get whatapp for free after the free trial?
on iPhones it's 1 dollar to purchase it and you only pay one time.
in Android phones it's 1 year free trial and then 2$ per year...
Why do they even take money for it?
I mean, Kakaotalk is free anyway, and it's as good as whatsapp...
Please tell me if there's a way, even contact me in private messages if this is illeagal to talk about such things on here.

funny. i had it on my iphone and my sensation and my sgs2 and iv never had to pay for it and i got it from the market. what do you have to pay?

If you go into WhatsApp and hit the menu button, go to Settings and get into Account Info, you'll see that your Account Type is "Free Trial" in which it will have a Service Expiration. Mine says Feb 23, 2012.
If you press on "Purchase online", it will forward you to your browser in which it will cost "only $1.99 for one year of service!".

Why not use viber? or skype those are free.

chat on have launch, just download it and go for trial...

i purchased the iphone version for $0.99 when i was using iphone 4 then switched to sgs2 and mine shows expiration of oct 2020, didnt pay for android one

I do have skype and viber - skype's just for video calls, the messeging there isn't great and I barely use viber.
I even have Kakaotalk but no one in here seem to have it as well.
More over, we have a group of three people when one's using Adroid (myself), another one with an iphone 4 an the third one's using symbian o Whatsapp is the best way to go.
I didn't look for alternatives, I just asked if there's a way you know to not purchase it and still using it for free...

Just pay the very reasonable and minimal fee and stop being a friggin' cheapskate then.

ChatOn might also be an alternative

My whatsapp "trial" was going to expire at the end of this month, but got a notification yesterday that the trial period has been extended to end of may next year

same here, i mailed whatsapp company, why they etended it because i allready used it one year...
maybe if you pay for the service you get some kind of extra's ?
because, why would they extend something they trail to users for only one year ?
dont get it, also i think, there are so many free Ping apps, why dont they just make an ad version or free version with less options then the pro version ?
dont get these people, when i get answer to my question from whatsapp, I'll report back here!

Does anyone know why when someone sends you a message on Whatapp, it only shows in the notification bar "Message from X", as opposed to the actually message? Every other program I used (Messaging, ChompSMS, Google Chat, Facebook Chat, Twitter) is able to show you the message on the notification bar.
For Whatsapp, you must open the program. Is there a way to change this?

There used to be a setting that allowed message content to be shown in the notification bar, guess it's been removed at some point though.
I've emailed the devs a few times with bugs/feature stuff, they're pretty responsive, why not get in contact with them n request it

If you buy it on the iPhone for $0.99 and then put your SIM in an Android phone you will get a free lifetime subscription on Android.

I downloaded Whatsapp from the market about 3 months ago. Very recently I got a message that my account had been upgraded. It's now active until 2021. I've never paid for the app and can not explain why it is now active until 2021. But I'm happy anyway

I've been using Whatsapp for a year and half. Never got a warning. Its basically free forever.
Or just backup everything, fresh install from a ROM you love with wiping all data will reset your "trail" time.

It sure is, but its not famous, yet.
I think because its Android exclusive for now.
I honestly liked it more than Whatsapp, itself.

That wiping suggestion you make doesn't work. I wipe my phone a lot because I try a lot of custom roms. I need to reinstall Whatsapp everytime and it still shows me an expiry date of Jan 17, 2012. It is based on your phonenumber registration and not on some locally stored file

Paid 0.99 in iphone for long time....now got 10 years license in Android.

[Q] Have you ever heard of mystery texts from 9329 saying "Your validation code is: "

[Q] Have you ever heard of mystery texts from 9329 saying "Your validation code is: "
I was really creeped out by this today.
Normally when you get a text saying "Your validation code is: [followed by some 8 digit code] " it's because *you* asked for it.
And if you *didn't* ask for it, you could be justifiably concerned that someone else *did* try to authenticate using your credentials somewhere.
Usually this is a harmless random occurrence, but in my case today I got three of these in a row immediately after the phone recovered from a mysterious freeze.
Today I had been downloading some unfamiliar apps ("VPN Connections", VPNC widget, and 2X (remote desktop) Client after which the phone did something I haven't seen before: I was running the maps application when it froze, stayed frozen, and after trying everything possible, I just held down the power key for like 20 seconds after which the blue skateboard CM7 boot animation appeared immediately (bypassing the usual white HTC EVO 4G screen) and the OS reloaded in just a few seconds.
Admittedly this fast boot behavior could be normal for all I know, but combined with the rest of it seems really odd and I feel paranoid.
What could I have been doing lately that might trigger this particular sequence of mystery freeze followed by mystery text?
Has anyone personally experienced anything similar?
bump - I did search google for any reports of similar experiences and got nothing which is why I thought I might ask around here..
I called Sprint. They could not tell me anything about these text messages or any text messages in fact. They said they have access to call detail but not text details. Basically unless law enforcement gets involved you can't talk to the super *duper* part of Sprint support that can retrieve information on texts. Seems a little lame not to be able to talk to customers about what is going on on their own network, but there it is.
Anyway while I was researching all this I checked my account online and while reviewing my bill I discovered a (presumably older and unrelated) mystery charge for $9.99 from
Mobile Love: Alerts - 34095 MBLLOVE
If you google this scam you will find many people receive three text messages in a row (in this case from 34095) and then discover the charge on their bill later on. Supposedly if you text "STOP" back to that number you don't get charged but it's a total scam either way. It's possible I got a text from 34095 at some point and just disregarded it. I can't remember honestly. Anyways Sprint removed the charge for me.
They also said, going forward, if any charges appear as a result of the 9329 texts (see OP) I could always call back and have them removed later. Otherwise there will not be any record of these texts or any way to find out more about them. Ever.
I'm not really as worried about getting *charged* for something as somebody untraceably signing up for some *access* to something in my name. Oh well. No point in worrying about something you can't control I guess.
Wow that's bizarre dude.

My guess is that you installed an app that had permission to modify your SMS Text Messages and Use Services That Cost You Money. Alternately, if any of the apps required root access that is the same thing.
What happens is this: the app uses it's permissions to send a SMS text to a short code and then delete the text. That way you cannot directly see that "you" signed up for a premium text service. You need to be very careful to look at permissions before installing apps of questionable origin... even if they are on the official android market... even if they do not require root.

I think the Sprint Visual Voicemail app uses a validation code
The other day I was in my Sprint.com account and found 2 9.99 charges on 2 of my lines for some text thing also. I called Sprint and told them I don't know where they came from. Sprint took the charges off. I asked them if there was anything I could do about it because this wasn't the first time it had happened. The lady said I can block all 3rd party text so you don't get spam text and extra charges. It didn't effect anything else. I had them do it and everything works flawlessly. It doesn't cost a dime for them to do it.
Typical SMS scam, the really messed up part is that the carrier takes a cut in exchange for looking the other way and acting like they don't know whats going on..... essentially, by NOT responding to these messages you signed up for their service. Thankfully, these have never shown up on my bill, but if they did I wouldn't call sprint....Ill call my lawyer instead.
This video explains everything....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9MQAfh-bCE&feature=youtu.be
One of my co-workers got one of these messages like a year ago, he has paid it every month because he never looks at his bill but just pays it regardless of the amount. On the flipside, people make fun of me sometimes for taking my good-ol' paper check down to the bank and not having my bills automatically pay themselves....
EDIT: Im astounded at the claim made by the poster above me, where sprint was actually willing to do something about it...I deal with a lot of cell phones and I have never seen an instance where a carrier took proactive action without hassle...they always pull the "duhhhhhhhhhhhh...we don't know whats going on so were going to transfer you around until you get frustrated and give up/hang up".

It wasn't a claim. They did it. I told her what was up and she got her supervisor on the phone and they did it. I'm sorry if you think things can't be done with a good attitude and the right words.
I wanted to ask for some clarification on this actually: you said they happily took action to block "all 3rd party texts". Does that mean you have effectively disabled SMS completely?
I mean I do want to receive real texts from warm bodies. Do they have some way of detecting and blocking texts from short codes?
Does this break other notifications (eg visual voicemail or alerts from sprint letting you know about new services or when your bill is ready for viewing)?

The other services you are referring to are Sprint services. This blocks 3rd party. Meaning outside spam text as we call them. It does not disable SMS at all. It just blocks outside spam text and things that cost you extra charges from happening.

I didn't use the term "claim" to be rude, just out of personal philosophy that this is the internet and everything is to be taken with a grain of salt, this is compounded by my experiences with carriers and their knowledge and/or willingness to take care of the issue.
I have personally never had to call sprint for this issue for myself or anyone else, 99% of the time I have to deal with this issue, its with at&t or cricket, only one on verizon and this was a while ago.
Did you get this app off the market ? There suppose to scan stuff before it goes up to keep that from happening . If you got it off the net then that's how it happens .

I was doing a lot of things to the phone that day. Also, just to review, the phone "crashed" (did some kind of fast boot) while using maps, and then immediately after the OS came back up, I got the three text messages telling me what my "valdiation code" was.
Amongst other activities I had been doing that day, I installed 3 apps:
VPN Connections (not downloaded from market, yes downloaded from the net)
2x Client for RDP / Remote Desktop
VPNC Widget
At the time of the crash I had already uninstalled the first one after I discovered the last one worked better for me.
None of these look like they require unusual permissions (like "Use Services That Cost You Money") that illogos mentioned above.
I actually still have the download of "VPN Connections" on my SDCard. I double clicked the apk again just to see what permissions it required, and it just said "Storage (modify/delete SD card contents)" and "Phone Calls (read phone state and identity)". I downloaded it from here, http://code.google.com/p/get-a-robot-vpnc/ , which doesn't look *that* sketchy. However it hasn't been updated since June 2010 and no longer appears in the app market, so clearly it was not going to be my first choice. I did run it, it did work; But, for the reasons above, I quickly replaced it once I found something equally functional that looked like it was better supported.

Shazam 2.0

A word of warning. The new Shazam has appeared today in the marketplace as well as Shazam Encore. When you read the description it says you won't lose functions if you bought the app before May 18th, that's a lie!
You see, you can't update the old free app because it doesn't exist anymore, only 2.0 exists now. 1.0 doesn't even show up in your purchase history!
If for a reason you have to reinstall it, 2.0 will count as a new purchase and you will lose unlimited tagging. You will keep unlimited tagging only if you never ever have to reinstall the app. When you reset or buy that shiny Nokia phone in 6 months, you will only get Shazam 2.0, not the one you first got for free.
I have 1.0 installed on my phone, (I guess it's 1.0, there is no about menu for it anywhere, but it's been there for over a month and I have unlimited tagging. no update shows up in marketplace.
Are you saying that if I remove the 1.0 from my phone, I can then only install 2.0 and it will have limited tags?
Once Bing handles song tags, it won't matter much, but I have Shazam installed in my restore file, so I guess I can never really "lose" it.
What if the 1.0 xap was floating around and it was installed, wouldn't it too have the unlimited tagging?
True. It's not an update.
Just wait for Mango to have bing audio, music, whatever (;

Yes, if you remove it from your phone or buy a new phone it will not be the same version. It's not going to show up in your purchase history either even though you had it before they changed it to 2.0.
it's too bad they went that route. They'll lose customers for sure, and as Bing will do it for free, they really should be trying to build as large a loyalty base now as they can. Seems like a silly decision to me, but it's their app, their company, their choice...
I contacted Shazam, at least they were fast to answer. Hopefully he didn't get this confused with the update that went live today:
Daniel Van Damn, May-26 14:23 (BST):
Hi there
Sincere apologies for any issues caused by our recent update.
The issue has been identified and resolved, and the updated application has been submitted to the Marketplace for final approval. You'll be notified within the Windows Phone Marketplace as soon as it's available for download, this should take place within the next couple of days. If you've previously had unlimited tagging within your application, this will remain unaffected post-update, and will for all future updates. If your app is being stored in an incorrect location eg. the xbox gaming hub, it will be returned to the correct location.
Again, we're very sorry for this issue, and for any inconvenience it may have caused. Please feel free to get back in touch with any further questions or concerns you may have.
Kind regards,
Daniel Van Damn

sounds like they are talking about the previous issues and the update submitted to the marketplace is the one we're looking at now
Right. It sounds like we all need to email them to let them know that the current "fix" doesn't fix anything, and see what they can do about it.
My guess is that they won't be able to do anything. There are problems with the marketplace. I've already had one other app get lost due to a marketplace fluke, where instead of getting submitted as an update, it was submitted as a new app, forever breaking the update path for existing users. The developer apologized, but was unable to get Microsoft to transfer the purchase history from the old version to the new one.
So apparently Shazam is dead. Because I'm not going to spend $6 for a service that will be free in the OS in a few months.
Yeah we could try that.

Yeah came back yesterday. The issue is this version makes you lose unlimited tagging even if you bought the app before May 18th.
Great news! After a few exchanged emails with Shazam support they asked me to find my Device ID (there's a free app for that) and did some magic tricks within their database. I reinstalled the app and now I have unlimited tagging back!
Cool! Just curious, did you try installing the update before their database tweak? And if so, did you encounter the 5 tag limit? I only ask because I had to hard reset my Focus a few days ago to install a new SD card, and since I reinstalled Shazam 2.0, I have not seen the limit. I've done about 20 tags, and everything has worked fine.
Also, if their database is device id based, shouldn't your device have already been there?
And on another note, if the database IS device id based, that means anyone who upgrades to a new phone will lose their unlimited tagging, which makes me . It should be based on your Live ID, which (I think) follows you from phone to phone.
I tried to update but the marketplace wouldn't let me as Shazam 1.0 doesn't exist anymore. I had to uninstall it and install Shazam 2.0 and that's where I was hit with the tag limit.
I agree that their database should be done with Live IDs, just makes sense.

Interesting. Yeah, when I said "update" I should have been clearer. I meant did you install the 2.0 version that showed up. The reason I asked is because that is what I did after my hard reset, but I never got hit with the limit. Maybe my device id was still correct in their database, but somehow yours got lost.

Peew971, Im still with Shazam 1.0 as I don't want to lose the unlimited tags.
Is it worth updating to Shazam 2.0 ?
Thanks
It's basically the same app really, not sure if the YouTube feature is in 1.0 but I never use it. I'd say 2.0 will guarantee you get future updates but as long as yours is working there's no need to update right now.
If you do update to 2.0 and get a tag limit, do contact Shazam support, they'll fix it for you.

shazam - anyone been able to get their unlimited tagging back?

as someone who downloaded shazam in the market before they started charging for it, i always had unlimited tagging with the free version of the app...and it always carried between whatever ROMs i had installed on any given day.
since upgrading to the nexus, i can't get it to give me unlimited back. i tried restoring a titanium backup from my incredible, that also didn't work. still waiting to hear back from their support team on it...
has anyone who was grandfathered into the old shazam app gotten unlimted tagging to work?
I had the same problem, but fortunately I bought Soundhound when it was .10 for the 10 billion download sale.
I've had soundhound for a while now, got it when it was the free app of the day on amazon. If I would've known this was gonna happen though, I would've bought shazam encore when it was 10 cents. I very much prefer shazam.
Has anyone been able to get unlimited tagging working?

They actually just responded to my email outlining how to get it transferred to the new device...I'll post it here for anyone who might need it. I'm going to email them later tonight with my info, we shall see if they honor their own policy.
-----
I've received a new Android handset, can I transfer my free/unlimited app to my new handset?
Users who’ve downloaded and setup the free Shazam app prior to the 13th July 2010 can now keep their unlimited tagging status when switching to a new Android device. Note, users who purchase Shazam Encore can re-download Shazam Encore from the Android Market free as long as they use the same Google account on their new device.
To keep your unlimited tagging status, follow the steps below.
1) Note down the IMEI number of the Android device which had Shazam installed with unlimited tagging.
Trouble finding your IMEI? • If you still have the original device, the IMEI number can be found under Android Settings> About Phone> Status > IMEI. • The IMEI will be printed on a label on the device, usually under the battery. • Your carrier may also give you this information from their records if you have sold your device or lost it. • It may also be found located in/on the handset's original packaging.
2) Launch Shazam on your new device and click on Settings>About Shazam
3) Click the email address link ([email protected]). This will open up a pre-populated support email (containing your current MEID/IMEI) using your preferred email client.
4) Change to Subject text to “Android: Transfer Unlimited Tagging”
5) At the bottom of the mail, enter the IMEI number of your old device which was granted unlimited tagging.
6) Select Send
If our records indicate you were granted unlimited tagging on your old IMEI, we will transfer the same status over to your new device. Please note: Your old device will be reverted back to limited user status.
Not that this is of any help but I always thought that feature was tied to your google market account. I would have shazam grandfathered installed to multiple devices and all would show unlimited tagging. Did they recently change it? Not that shazam (non encore) shows up in my market for me anyways.

Google Hangouts it's horrible!!!

I think it's a horrible app you can't see who is online or busy or whatever. This is not a chat service anymore. There is no contact list basically listing all the people from your G+ and contacts. It's horrible!. In every level. I have to scroll through 800 contacts or search just to send a message and it doesn't even let me know if that person is online, so I have no idea how they are getting my messages
I have to agree. This is pretty terrible. They even removed the calling option so its just video now, as if video-only makes sense on a PHONE.
Hopefully Talk isn't dead by the end of the year.

I'm going to agree as well. I dont like that I cant see who's online. And almost all of my contacts dont have this service so, in my opinion, they shouldnt show up at all.

I did that as soon as it asked me to confirm my phone number. I really just want the built-in IM that came with my account, not a Whatsapp clone to replace it. I already have Whatsapp.
Hopefully Talk never dies. Hangouts is social media disguised as instant messaging.
So after watching a video on it, I realized it does show who is online by displaying their profile pic at the bottom when they join the hangout. But still, it shouldnt display ALL my contacts in the contact list. Just the ones who have the ability to use it.
Idk maybe it's just me, but I like the new hangout. You can send screenshots again and everything. Granted, it takes some getting used to, but after playing with it a bit, its growing on me

exactly!
I just wish it was a proper unified messaging app - i.e. could send carrier SMS to non-Hangout contacts. Incidentally, anyone know what happens to the message if you do try and send to someone who doesn't have it? Must get routed somewhere?

I would think this only works with Gmail/Google+ users. Which, again, is why not all contacts should not be displayed. I'm going to try and search for some info on this.

Why would you think this would happen? Google doesn't want you using carrier SMS anyway. They will shift us to internet-based messaging completely someday. That's why you didn't get SMS integration.
I'm guessing it gets sent to their Google Talk.

So if you go and try to start a hangout it will show you a list of people to start the hangout with, people not available(offline) has their picture grayed out and the available(online) are shown as usual. As far as the video calling-I think if the person on the other end doesn't have video calling available(due to no front facing camera on their phone or no camera on the desktop/laptop) only voice calling will be the option available....have to test it though... I think it's fresh and after awhile it will get better...I don't hate it.
Sadly a lot not to like so far. I was wondering why there were duplicate users in my contact list, if they are showing non-gmail email accounts separately I guess that explains it. Unfortunately, it doesn't show what account users in the list are coming from so you don't know which one you can use, if any.
Hopefully they will fix the contact mess and re-add status information (online/busy/offline, mobile/desktop). I like the new emoji, but hardly seems worth the great leap backwards in functionality.
On the plus side, you can finally copy text from your message history, so that's one longstanding, inexplicable failure corrected

This is what is really annoying. It feels like a dumbed-down product even though its been in the making for what seems like forever. It even requires you to join G+ to get the most out of it. Plus, its not even really that unified, as people still have G+ messenger since this only replaces Talk.
Heck, the app rating in the Play store has plummeted to 3.9 as I type this. What a joke.
completely useless.
I can't believe it took them two years to make this.
google talk was MUCH better, and compared to let's say, whatsapp, google talk was completely useless. that's how bad this thing is.

verizon messaging nag screen?

Every time a message arrives I get the Verizon message nag screen wanting to use their 30 day trial of their messenger software, click decline, pick the stock Google messenger, next text that comes in. same deal this is getting old, and even Verizon has no solid answer..

I may not be understanding your issue correctly, but have you tried setting the default texting app to the the Google App in Settings/More/Default SMS App?
I did try that also compared the settings to the both htc one M8s' we have.
I finally just did a factory reset and rechecked the settings and ticked the stock messaging app and so far its fine..
Weird one as it was checked before the reset..
I'd love to get all of this extra Verizon "gumbo" off these phones, I can't stand how much garbage they load on them.
Root and uninstall that junk app. I did.
I didn't think anything was available for the htc one m8 on Verizon to do so yet?
Verizon Messaging can be disabled under the App Manager. You can also, using a custom launcher, drag the icon to the top of your screen under App Info, and disable it there. Same goes for their VVM and Caller ID apps.
