[Q] Can this at least try to connect before saying data network unavailable? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I go into an area with no signal for a prolonged time, then come out into the air and try to make a call, not only does my Epic 4g not connect, but it does not recognize that it now has access to a signal until I enter airplane mode and then exit airplane mode.
I'm sure in the alternative I could wait 5 minutes or so for the phone to attempt to connect on its own.
Is there a setting, preference or hack that would instruct the phone to look for a connection any time I press send for a phone call or text message?
Failing that is there a widget or icon I can place on my homescreen that will refresh my data connection, the same as entering and leaving airplane mode?
I can't be the only one who has had this problem.

No. Use airplane mode and be satisfied. Atleast we have that option.

Mine doesn't do that. On Hurricane 1.6 EH17 Gingerbread.

Is 3G data sleeping?

Hi,
This might be a dumb question.
On normal situation with Android phone:
When I turn on my device from sleep, I could not see the 3G icon ... Only the signal strength. Then after couple of seconds, the 3G icon came up.
My phone works like this since I have it.
My question, does this mean the 3G data is also sleep when the phone sleep? Because when I wake it up, the 3G icon does not immediately come back.
Thanks.
Yes, it does disconnect after a period of inactivity (if you look at the android logs) when the phone is in sleep mode. There is a setting which you may not have enabled. it goes on the lines of 'Enable always on mobile data' under wireless and network options.
However if the phone needs to connect to the net, then i think it will re-connect in that time period. This is what you see when the 3G icon appears after a few seconds on wake up. I have always seen the phone to do this.
Allright,
I was thinking if this kind of app is really necessary:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7547017
But, I guess, it is useful because during the sleep mode, some app might require internet access (email sync for example).
Maybe....The only reason i say this is that the OS will start a new network connection in the background even when the phone is sleeping...thats how your emails are sync'd and so is everything else...

[Q] Glitch with Airplane Mode toggle

Ive noticed an annoying glitch with the Airplane Mode toggle, if I put it into airplane mode as I would at night, the following morning it wont re- connect and I have to toggle it on then reboot the phone to connect. This gets old pretty quick Any ideas? I'm on T-mobile contract and dont use Blur.
I've got a similar glitch where when I turn off airplane mode, the phone connects to the 3g data network even if 3g data is disabled in the options

Well... next time this happens try this for the hell of it: INFO (*#*#4636#*#* on dial pad) > Phone information > scroll down to "radio" and see if it is OFF. Turn it on and see if it then works.
Or... after you shut off airplane mode, have you tried turning on wifi? What happens?

Just tried this while radio still active (airplane mode off, i.e phone normal) amd hit Dial. Got a Running USSD code message then an error message, something like wrong MMI. No Phone information or options ( must only work when airplane mode is on)

Disable Cellular Radio without turning 'Airplane Mode" On.

Hey,
I am going to the Israel for vacation, and I have IGo and maps downloaded to my phone. However, I tried using GPS in Airplane mode (to see if it works, because I expect to turn my phone onto airplane mode while in Israel), it turns on, but it does not detect any satellites (I used the "GPS Test" app to test it). So, I 'Googled' around for some options, and found that it will not connect to satellites while in "Airplane Mode".
What I would like to do is to try and shut off the cellular Radio (while keeping the 'Airplane Mode' turned off) and try connecting to GPS then, to see if it works. I need a way to turn off the Cellular radio without turning on 'Airplane Mode', or, if you have any other ideas, please do tell, I am looking for anyway to use my GPS without it costing me any money (by using data, or cellular service in Israel).
Thank you very much.

Isn't there a setting in wireless and networks that lets you turn that off? Or maybe you can try juice defender. That has a ton of options and many have to do with turning off wireless.
When you hold down the power button like you are shutting off the phone there is an option Data Network Mode... click it and turn it off and it will shut off your data. i do it a lot to save battery

Now how about an option to turn off cell signal without turning off data?
Not sure there is an option, at least within the phone's menu, I'm sure there is an app of some sort to offer this feature.
I've tried using Extended Controls to toggle the cellular radio at no avail. It seems like airplane mode kills all onboard radios, and I'm starting to think it's not possble to what you're looking in EC05.

how do you suppose using data without a cell signal???
And, Does anyone know how much data is used to get the general location used to start GPS? if it doesn't use data then what does it use to get the general location? (i know it uses the towers, but how does it transmit the location to your phone?)
You can do this with Tasker.

Hey,
I went on my trip and used GPS without getting charged, here is what I did:
being that GPS wont work with 'Airplane mode' turned On, I had to keep it 'Off', so in order not to get charged; I turned off Data connection (by holding down on the power button and choosing the option from the list) to make sure the didn't charge me for Data. I was not worried about incoming calls because you are only charged if you answer. the only issue was that they charge $0.05 for each incoming text, so before I went on the trip I called Sprint and told them to disable text for the duration of my trip.
it was a great success, GPS worked great and i wasn't charged a penny.
Thanks for the update, I was curious if our phone could be used that way.

You can disable just the cellular radio using Tasker... this will still allow you to use wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc...

[Q] enable airplane mode turns wifi off in 4.2?

i have 2 gnex phones that both just updated to 4.2, and prior to the update, when i turned on airplane mode, cell data would turn off but wifi would be left on.
after the 4.2 update, one phone continues to work that way, with airplane mode on, cell data is turned off but wifi is left on. the other phone, enabling airplane mode turns off both wifi and cell data.
i know that apps are not able to toggle airplane mode anymore (AutoAP) because of security changes but why would airplane mode work differently on 2 phones running the same 4.2 build?
both phones are running stock android, no root, no flashing.
is there a setting i'm missing? was this something in the update that other people are experiencing?
thanks for the help!
Can't you just toggle wifi back on after?

yes, but it immediately shuts wifi back off.
with airplane mode on, i can go to the wifi settings screen, and hit the toggle, it turns on, scans, finds the local wifi, connects and at the same moment it connects the wifi on/off toggle flips back to off.
just seems weird that it is happening with this phone but mine is working as expected...
Then you must go back to 4.1.2 with 4.2 gapps.

any idea why it would work with one 4.2 phone and not the other?
seems odd i'd have to backport one phone but leave the other at 4.2
This happens on my Nexus 4. Airplane mode constantly disables WiFi, no matter what. And yes the app AutoAP doesn't work either.
I have found this app, Airplane Mode Wi-Fi Tool, funny that it was made for Android versions prior to 2.0.
The actual app doesn't seem to work (to enable/disable airplane mode and WiFi), but within the app lies a nifty feature in the Preferences menu under Extras:
Keep Wi-fi On
Wi-fi on Airplane Mode
Check both of those and you should be able to turn Airplane mode on and then keep WiFi on.
Cheers.

im on ARHD 7.0.0 and even in prior versions, when airplane mode was turned on wifi would turn off but it could be turned back on. how come your wifi stays on during the airplane mod transition?
Isn't airplane mode means disable any active radio transmission includes Wi-Fi which is sent and receive data ?
If you just wanna stay off calls why don't you just use automatic redirect incoming calls to voice mail or just simply pull out the sim card?

Airplane mode is supposed to turn wifi off (its a transceiver). However, You can turn it back on while airplane mode is activated and still have the other functions off.
That how airplane mode is supposed to work, thats not a bug, every phone ive had does this

i don't know why, but wifi always has always stayed on when switching to AP mode since i got our Gnex phones in sept. (4.1 i think). wifi even stayed enable when switching to AP mode in my old crappy kin two.
and i think it must be fairly common based upon the instructions in the $30 cell service thread, but i'm no android expert so maybe i'm wrong.

There's a lot of talk about this. Check the [GUIDE] to voip/$30/month plans. But it sounds like google moved it into part of core services or something like that. So none of the autoap type programs work any more. But one member had this suggestion below in that other thread. Gotta buy Tasker, but should be able to get back to working like AutoAP did.
Download Secure Settings. Launch Secure Settings, go over to the Helper tab and install the helper. Then go to Tasker. Go into your task and delete the Airplane Mode radio step and the Airplane mode on step. Then hit the + at the bottom left, go to Plugins, select Secure Settings. Hit edit. Scroll down to "Airplane Mode Radios" and select it, and then select "Cell" from the dropdown. Hit the save button at the bottom left and select the check mark to create the task. Move the task where it needs to be by dragging on the right side up and down. Then create a new task, Plugins, Secure Settings, edit, Airplane mode, on, save button, check mark, move to position. You can figure out the rest. Works perfectly.
Llama works as well, it's free and looks less complicated

keep wifi on in airplane mode
I guess I have figured out how to do it with Tasker or Secure Settings.
Both have two actions like "Airplane Mode" and "Airplane Radios", so the second one doesn't turn off anything, but set, what to control with "Airplane Mode" action. Setting seems to be system wide and permanent (saved after reboot).
Good luck

Tasker Airplane Mode Toggle

I am trying to set up a Tasker profile that when connected to my home wifi, first enables airplane mode, then switches wifi and Bluetooth back on. The issue is that Tasker says it needs me to input an ADB command for this to work every time my phone is rebooted. In trying to avoid having to do that, but not sure if there's any other option.
The reason I want to do this, maybe there's another solution, when I'm home the cell signal is poor (Sprint), initially my phone would always have wifi calling available, but lately it refuses to use wifi calling if there's even the slightest bit of cell signal available. What that leads to is pretty much no actual phone service at all, since the cell signals so poor I can't make or receive calls. At the moment I have to manually enable airplane mode, wifi and Bluetooth and remember to disable airplane mode when I leave the house. While the only takes a few seconds, is easily forgettable. So, hoping to automate the process.
Thanks.
Maybe it's easier using bixby routines
Couldn't find anything in Bixby, but IFTTT might work, going to try later.

i mean something like this
https://drive.google.com/open?id=118bSmpUF46ONpE20Qa3wuNffkU_LFCtM
just to test i've started the routine with a button, and then:
switch to airplane mode
switch wifi on
Might be stupid questions, but where in Bixby do you assign a routine to a button? All I can find are by voice, additionally, when I go to commands, there's no open for airplane mode or wifi, searching brings no results.
Never used Bixby, so trying to figure things out. Thanks for the help.
