Is 3G data sleeping? - Desire General

Hi,
This might be a dumb question.
On normal situation with Android phone:
When I turn on my device from sleep, I could not see the 3G icon ... Only the signal strength. Then after couple of seconds, the 3G icon came up.
My phone works like this since I have it.
My question, does this mean the 3G data is also sleep when the phone sleep? Because when I wake it up, the 3G icon does not immediately come back.
Thanks.

Yes, it does disconnect after a period of inactivity (if you look at the android logs) when the phone is in sleep mode. There is a setting which you may not have enabled. it goes on the lines of 'Enable always on mobile data' under wireless and network options.
However if the phone needs to connect to the net, then i think it will re-connect in that time period. This is what you see when the 3G icon appears after a few seconds on wake up. I have always seen the phone to do this.

Allright,
I was thinking if this kind of app is really necessary:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7547017
But, I guess, it is useful because during the sleep mode, some app might require internet access (email sync for example).

Maybe....The only reason i say this is that the OS will start a new network connection in the background even when the phone is sleeping...thats how your emails are sync'd and so is everything else...

easy terminate data connection

my data connection won't automatically disconnect, even if i change the setting in tweak HD, or change it directly in teh registry (the GPRS_bye thing).
i thought this was draining my battery (i was lucky to get 15 hours), as it was pretty much connected all the time ( i have it set to chekc email every 2 hours on 5 different accounts)
it was pretty annoying that i was charging the phone overnight, and it wasn't even lasting until the next evening.
but by mistake i have discovered something (could even be in the user manual, i dont know?) and i have found it very useful so i though i would let you know!
if you are just on the home tab, just press the hang up key, and it will disconnect the data! so now whenever i check the time/read a text message/pretty mcuh every time i look at my phone, i press the hang up button when i've finished.
now my battery easily lasts 2 days (normally dies half way through the third day if i'm stupid enough to leave it long enough) - so i am much happier with the phone as a whole.
i also wondered if its possible to turn off data completely overnight?
e.g. is there a task scheduler, so i can schedule the nodata program to run say from 00:00 to 07:00?
Thanks
The above 'finding' is the function of 'End Key'. You can find and configure in 'Settings'.
As for disabling overnight your data connection you could try 'Outlook email Scheduler'
"h..p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=438970&highlight=gmail" and have it manually synching an night time.
brillinat works great! i used this key to lock HD but stop all connections is much better choice.
You can leave the "hold button" feature as lock phone and it will still work to turn off the connections of your mobile internet.
For mine, 'single press' shuts down the HSDPA connection, 'hold' locks the phone.
How did you set it so you have only to press the button instead of holding it down to terminate the connection?
Is there any way to switch off the data connection altogether, orange wanna charge me a small fortune to connect. i've already got them to disconnect it but the phone still makes an attempt to connect for weather email etc. is there any way to force it to use the wireless connection only??
You don't need to change anything....well, I didn't. Pressing just once will turn my orange internet (HSPDA) off.

The HD Tweak program (Availabe on these forums) has an option to set up which connections you want to disable. You can perminantly turn off Orange interent from there.
superb!!!
will look later.

background data activity when Desire awakes

Hi all,
Can anyone enlighten me about this question?
Whenever I switch on my touch screen (press the power button and slide down the bar) I see from the 3G icon that there is some data activity. In particular, I first see the arrow up, then it switches from 3G to H, then a few seconds of arrow down, and then back to 3G idle.
Has anyone with a rooted phone tried to look at it with androshark (or any other monitoring tool)?
Note that this happens also with all the background data options disabled (including wireless location, accounts sync, always on mobile data, etc).
Clearly, if I switch off mobile networks completely (from the setting or from the power widget), it doesn't happen.
I am just curious of what, how much, (and whereto) is transmitted and received.
Best,
wally

Problems: Wifi keeps turning on and off when screen is off

Hey there,
I'm using S-off and oxygen 2.2 on my rooted desire and I have a big problem:
Always when I press the power button so that the screen goes off and than turn it on again by pressing it again after some time (20 secs or so) I see that wlan is turned off and the cellular data connection is used. Shortly after the screen went on, WLAN is on again. Is this some default behaviour to save battery? Is wlan really more battery comsuming than the providers data connection?
The problem which arises now is: I'm using http://www.appbrain.com/app/unlock-at-home-using-wifi/com.accedo.unlockathome which unlocks in a certain wifi and locks, when going out of whitelisted wifi networks. When I press power to turn off the screen and the wlan is disconnected after some short time, the screen gets locked and somehow I think that the screen gets on shortly after this. This causes the wifi to connect again and than after turning off again the wifi gets disconnected again. Thus after the lock applications locks the screen and thus shows it again... -> infinite loop. every now and than (i think about once a minute) I see the screen go on and quickly after it off again.
how to fix that?
Do you have something like Juice Defender installed?
Check the sleep policy.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Set wifi sleep policy to never, under wifi advanced settings.

Nope i havent!
@k3lcior: strangely it's already set to never and though I often see the cellular data icon appear also when I use the phone (e.g. when writing an sms) and directly disappear again there's to be a problem I think with something on my phone!?

[Q] Where do I find WIFI sleep policy settings?

On ICS, where can I find the settings for Wifi sleep policy etc? My Wifi keeps turning itself off after a time, and Im trying to get the the bottom of it, but cant find where those settings would be. They certainly arent where they have been for previous Android versions...
Go to Wifi Networks, click menu bottom on bottom right > advanced.
Even though mine is set to always stay on, it regularly turns itself off. Every morning, I've lost quite a lot of battery and I have no connection. Within a few seconds of the screen coming back on, it will reconnect.
Is this just me? (Android Revolution HD 2.1.2)
Its not working for me. No matter what setting I put wifi on it turns itself off when out of range for a certain period of time (about thirty minutes I think). Driving me insane.
Mine's only a couple of meter's from the access point, still turns itself off...
The same for me. Not 30 minutes but immediately.
For example the notofications appear only if I unlock the screen.
In wifi setting is on "keep always"
Example: i receive a whatsapp, email or facebook notification only when unlock the screen. Is normal?
With data connection all work fine.
I'm glad to know it's not just me. At least that means hopefully there is a fix coming at some point...

same here anyone an idea? sucks hard..
I figured my problem, traced it back to the Vodafone app, it was causing wifi to crash. Once i removed it it works perfectly. The problem stemmed from the vodadone app constantly trying ro find free wifu points to.automatically connect to.

No auto-connecting to wifi when BT connection lost

Hi there,
after update to MM i'm having following issue. My watch doesn't automatically connect to wifi network when i'm going out of the BT range. It will only connect when i wake up the screen and swipe down the top menu or slide left to the app drawer. It looks like you have to first wake up the watch to trigger the action.
Anyone having the same? It's quite annoying as it happens all the time in my home when i'm going between the floors without my phone with me. Of course, i have wifi adapters on both floors. so it's not a matter of wifi signal strength. As i said, when i "trigger" the reconnection, it will connect to wifi without problems.
Thanks in advance.
Having the same problem. Have had the watch 2 days. Anyone have a solution?
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA-Developers mobile app
Nobody? I have also restored to defaults and configured once more but the issue still occurs. It starts to be very annoying.
a theory: it's in power save mode. Let it go below 15% battery, find the card about battery saver, turn it off. I think I've seen that power save mode stays on even after charging, and can only be turned off with the card.
Also check your settings under wifi/advanced
Thanks. I also tried to remove some saved wireless networks from the watch and it also helped a bit.
