wifi not connecting/disconnecting after a second - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched the forums and found nothing to help. My Evo is rooted, and I have not recently flashed any Roms. Last Wednesday or Thursday this started happening, my evo just will not stay connected to wifi, any wifi. Once it connects it disconnects within a second. I have tried to reboot the wireless router and modem in my house to make sure. My girlfriends Evo connects fine full bars. Other times my evo cannot find my wireless router at all and just continues to scan. My wireless router is encrypted WPA2 and N.
For 2 weeks now I have been running Going Green Lightening 10-20 without any issue, the wifi was working perfectly. I tried to flash a different rom, same results. I read some other post that suggested flashing a new kernel, tried this as well and still not able to stay connected or see the wireless router. I've tried to connect to the wireless at work and recently stayed in a hotel and my still cannot pick up wireless. Anyone seen this happen before or have any suggestions?
Edit: I flashed freedom kernel, now I get a wifi signal but its not very strong. If I leave the room that has the router in it, my signal just drops. This has worked fine for over a year and all of a sudden it just kinda died. Any help would be appreciated. Also I am contacting HTC regarding this issue, I doubt sprint can help and I do not have the TEP any longer.

This can be closed I found the problem.

What was the problem?

my antenna is broken, the tape looking stuff, has a rip. So i have to replace it it should work.

i just had this issue, this is what you do:
Back up everything into Titanium Backup
Boot into recovery
wipe cache, Dalvik, and pretty much everything
reflash your rom, kernel and gapps (or if you would like to check out some other roms and kernels just click on the link in my sig)
once you've set up your phone download Titanium Backup from the market
in titanium backup restore all your apps ONLY!!! (don't get apps w/ data - only get apps, and do not get system data)
after this your wifi should be working just fine

Lol damn. Now is when I notice I have to many apps. Thanks for help. I'll give it a shot.
Sent from my EVO

Replacing the antenna worked for me. For everyone else I did see where clearing the cache, dalvick fixed it. Also try to flash a new kernel it did fix my issue originally, but just not distance.

4G Issues, Please Help

I have done some searching so please don't flame me, I couldn't find a specific answer.
I live in New Orleans (No 4G yet) but I am currently in Pittsburgh going to have a kidney transplant on Thursday. I really want to get my 4G working since it will be my only source of internet while I am in the hospital.
When I turn 4G on, it constantly cycles "Turning on" and "Turning off"
This is what I am running:
Rooted Evo Hardware Version 0003
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel 2.6.32.17-gee557fd [email protected] #15
Build number Calkulin's EViO 2 ROM v1.7.5
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI Version 1.90_003
PRL 60674
Wimax Version 4.6.2.3v27167
Thanks in advance for any help. I am a bit desperate since I will be in the hospital starting Thursday for about 2 weeks and still in Pittsburgh for about an entire month. I would love to get this working and I think the constant toggle of 4G is going to destroy my battery life and I can't get it to stop.
Thanks again.
I had the same issue and it was because of adfree and an old titanium backup that was corrupt. Mine was doing exactly what yours is but I was on rls5. I know it's not the rom because I am back on it and don't have that problem anymore. I would start from scratch but flash back to a stock rom first to make sure everything goes back to normal. In my case I had a nandroid of stock right when I rooted a few months back. Hope this helps
Thanks, I'm downloading Sprint Lovers right now and am going to give that a try. The last time I flashed, I restored only my apps, not system settings using Titanium. I always do a fresh backup right before I flash.
I've been so excited to try 4G and now I get nothing. Frustrating. I will try your advice and let you know. Thanks again.
here is my guess....
you are in a hospital...
they have some very intensive strong machines that put out so much interferance. most phones have problems getting a good phone singal in a hospital. you maybe fighting non-winalbe battle.
you need to talk to the nurses about alternative connections.

In my case even just installing apps and no data caused the problem. Once I started over again, it went back to normal.
Make sure you update you profile a few times in a row after flashing new roms too. It has been known to cause problems with the radio not connecting.

Thanks but I'm not in the hospital yet, I will be on Thursday. I was driving last night in downtown Pittsburgh where I should be getting a great signal and no 4G.
I will try the sprint lovers with nothing installed or restored and see if I can get 4G to work. I will definitely update my profile a few times to see if that helps. I just checked my RSA key and it is still intact so I'm glad about that.
Going to the store now so I will try it some more while I'm out and about.
Thanks.
Before you do all that, try turning it on with a 4G widget, it worked for me.

Make sure your wifi is off or 4g won't connect, as the phone prefers the fastest connection available.

Ok, progress:
Flashed Sprint Lovers Rom
Got 4G to turn on
Now it scans, attempts to connect to Sprint and does not connect
I checked my MAC and compared it to the 4G MAC under the battery and they match.
Any ideas?
Ok, walked to the window of the hotel and I got it to connect for 1 second then it dropped again and I cannot connect it anymore. I got super excited for the one second though. I don't know why it would not connect on my other rom. The hotel must have something going on to not let it connect so well.
Welcome to the world of 4g. Its great when you've got a good signal and awful when you don't. Coverage is very spotty and large concrete and steel buildings are its enemy. I've been in hotels that I've gotten great coverage and then walk across the hall and nothing. At least you know its working now, hopefully the hospital will have a better signal.
Restoring my apps now and hoping Titanium doesn't blow it up again. I'm going to walk outside in a few minutes (brrrrr) and try it out again. Hopefully I will have better success.
Apps and system settings restored and I still get it to turn on, now it's time to go outside and see if I can connect. It stinks that it wouldn't work with the other rom.
Anyone know if they can connect with OMJ's rom?
in weak 4g signal areas I had better luck connecting with cmwimax 6.1.2 alpha 3, give it a try

How is this rom, I have tried some CM roms in the past (the ones that don't have 4g working) and they were pretty cool but buggy. I like stable roms.
Let me know, maybe I'll make the change again.

[Q] Weak Wifi Signal

So, lately I've noticed that my Evo seems to have a really weak wifi signal. My router is only about ~15 feet from my room and most of the time it can't pick it up. I have to practically stand in front of it to get it to connect. I was also at a friends house where his PS3 was connected but my phone wouldn't even pick up the network.
The weird thing is that this is my second Evo. My first Evo could connect from my room fine without any problems as far as I can remember so I don't see why this one can't do the same. Possible hardware problem?
Are you using a stock ROM ? Custom kernel ? What type of router are you using (and your friends)

What Rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm using the senseless version of MikG's 2.1+3.0 ROM. Have always ran his ROMs and have always worked great for me. Running ChopSuey as the kernal but before when I still had stock, I noticed the same problem. Also, I have a Netgear Wireless Router. Not sure what kind my friend has.
I would have thought that the kernel wasn't supporting wireless n but I'm pretty sure chop suey does. Go under settings>wireless network>WiFi go to advanced settings and check "best WiFi performance" might be the culprit ? If not then I would suggest a different ROM
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I have had the same problem. Have been using the same rom and kernel for 3 weeks-a month issue started happening last Wednesday or Thursday. I literally need to be in the same room with my router...n can't get on open wifi. I have flashed diff roms n kernels. Reset my router and wiped my cache dalvik multiple times still barely working. If I am 15' away from router I have no signal or 1 bar. My ipod connects without a problem as well as my gf's EVO
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I have had a similar issue, right when I connect to my router I have great connection but then about 5 minutes later my connection bars slowly go down until it disconnects? And that's having my phone in the same spot the entire time...
Sent from my Synergized Evo 4g
I have contacted HTC and Sprint regarding this issue. Sprint was not helpful at all, they stated they do not have any reported issues. I was using the Sprint chat so they suggested I call their technicial support team. I will try this after work. HTC ask me to do a factory restore, but that does not work either.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Well, I never knew that Wifi performance option was there but I found it and turned it on. I even rebooted my phoned just to make sure the setting stuck and it did. I tried Wi-Fi again and it didn't make any difference. I still have to be literally 5 feet from the router for it to work right.
As I previously said, my other Evo worked fine when I used Wi-Fi and I never noticed this problem. I'm beginning to think it's some sort of hardware problem.
As for the other people with this problem, what ROMs and kernals are you guys running?
In the lower right corner when you have the back off, do you see the red tape/antenna? Mine appears to be ripped prob happened when I was changing the back chassis. Make sure yours isn't torn or anything
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I just looked and everything seems to be intact. I seem a few places where there is tape and no of it has been disturbed as far as I can see. But on another note, this is a new back assembly that I bought off Evo...could this be the problem?
possibly u may want to take it apart and make sure that the gold part is not broken or ripped any rip will cause an issue like this.
You can buy the wifi flex ribbons on ebay from HK for like $4.99.
When you swapped the back out did you peal off the tape or was it already on the new back chassis?

One X strange WiFi problem

Hello guys, I'm new on the forum, I am the owner of HoX for the past 5 months and so far I'm really glad with the phone. Everything worked very well until couple of days ago when I started to get strange problem with WiFi. Problem is not common HoX wi fi problem with signal bars. The thing is, when I connect to my router which is located in my room and when I'm in the room signal is full and everything works fine, I get full speed on the phone and everything is perfect. Problem begins when I move from my room to my living room or any other room in the house, then I still get pretty decent signal (full bars or one bar below full) but data transmission just doesn't work, I can't open any page or anything. The same thing happens with all apps using internet like Playstore etc.
Before I got this problem, I could normally use WiFi even when I get out of the home and signal and speed was just perfect. I am now writing you from my notebook via WiFi and I'm located in living room, while two walls and two doors seperate me from the router and I still have almost full bars and full speed. I had the same thing with One X. I could use WiFi anywhere in the house or even around the house.
I tried to connect to other routers as well in the other places and result is the same. I tried connecting at my University, at my friend's home and same thing occurs.
If anyone has or had the same problem please answer me and tell what to do, phone is just 5 months old. I still have year and a half warranty on it, but I'm not really patient and I wouldn't like to give it for a repair cuz knowing my dealer they wouldn't provide me with a replacement phone. :- Phone is unbranded HoX bought in Europe in November 2012.
Thanking you in advance and sorry for my imperfect English, I am from Europe
EDIT...
I forgot to say that I tried to power off/power on phone, I tried "Best Wi-Fi performance", and I also unticked the Auto Disconnect option and no benefits at all.
I just read the first 3 lines...
Send it to HTC-Care, they will install a spongy-pillars inside your phone, this should fix your WIFI.

I am afraid that's not the answer.
I have faced this problem with my device and HTC in-fact recognized the problem only after i captured a video of the behavior and sent it to them.
The local service center has not heard about it and they escalated the issue to Taiwan. Even a motherboard replacement does not solve the problem.

For me this behavior was irregular and not easily re-producible by the service center guys and hence i resorted to sending them a video comparing my HTC to another one side by side.
They did not have any fix for the solution. I would suggest you do the same as i did. They will choose to give you a temporary loan phone or a replacement phone.
Good luck.
I've had this on both my Desire and HOX and it's usually fixed by switching on mobile data. Doing this seems to remind the phone that it can see the internet and all is well again (it still uses the wifi rather than mobile data).
Thank you all for help. I tried to turn both Mobile data (3G) and WiFi, but same thing happens, and also I began experiencing a lower signal on the same distance from router than I had before.
For example, I had 2 bars before If I was in my living room which is separated by two walls and two doors from my room where is my router located. Now I barely got one bar or sometimes even a dot. So now I'm pretty sure that this is hardware related problem, anyways, there is already a topic about this problem so I will post my enquiries there. Thank you all for help

Hey, thank you for reply. I took two screenshots and this is my software info. BTW. I tried factory reset but that didn't help, problem still exists. As far as I can remember I did have some software update a while ago, but can't really remember what exactly. Here are the screens:
Unfortunately, I'm new user and obiviously I'm not able to post pictures here, but I will write what it says.
Android version:
4.1.1.
HTC Sense version:
4+
Software number:
3.18.401.1
HTC SDK API level:
4.63
HTC Extension version:
HTCExtension_Sense45_1
If you need more info like kernel, baseband etc let me know, btw. phone is not rooted, everything is still original (stock rom) and I haven't even tried to root it, or do anything about it, since when you root your phone, you can say goodbye to your warranty.
yea i see...it's 3.18 you have to update your phone to 3.19 and see if issue with wifi still persists...if yes it's hardware fault if not it's fixed by updating...got to settings/about/ then software update or so and download and install new update..
not for all things warranty is away after rooting
Thanks for reply, but how can I update it, cuz manually it won't work. When I go for software updates it says that there is no updates available for my phone?
EDIT...
I found this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226098 and some guy says that it will, among other things, repair WiFi reception...
Let's just hope then, that this is some kind of software issue )))
then go to settings and apps and there are those google framework things etc...then clear their cache and reboot
and from google play store too
3.19.401.1 which fixes the WiFi issue is not yet available. I hope we 'll get it soon! I bet that's why you have poor WiFi reception especially since you told us that before you didnt experience any issues at all!

Thank you for replies.
@Ivanovic that's true. I bought HoX in November 2012, and so far I'm really glad with the phone. Haven't had any negative experience, in 5 months it did restarted once or twice on its own, but other than that, everything was pretty fine until recent WiFi problems.
If I had a common HoX WiFi problem, I guess I would have bad signal even 1 centimeter from the router...
Let's hope this update comes ASAP and I hope so it could fix this, if nothing, I still have year and a half warranty on it, but it would be pretty damn hard to explain them this sort of problem and I am afraid that they wouldn't fix it properly.

Well, all my wi fi devices work fine on my router except One X. I tested my fathers HTC One V and I tested my notebook computer and they are both working fine. My Wi-Fi reception on One X is significantly reduced since when I go away to other room I got one bar, or even one dot but sometimes I get two bars and no data transfer. I can't remember If I had this problem before 3.18 update, since I don't really use my phone's wi-fi much out of my own room. I first noticed it at my University and at same places like coffee bars.
I don't see why would I have to change router settings, since my router was set up roughly a 6 months ago and everything worked fine including One X. Now One X is the only one which makes troubles.
I sent an email today to HTC with enquiry about this problem and they suggested me to try WiFi from safe mode. I did that and the problem still exists. I tried factory reset and I tried to clear Google framework cache like "One X master" mentioned above. Everything to no avail.
I've never dropped the phone from my hands and it doesn't have a single scratch on it cuz from the day one, I've been keeping it in protective rubber case. Only thing that I'm afraid of is heating during normal use over time. My phone definitely doesn't heat too much, cuz I'm an average user, I mostly use it for facebook, whats app and calls/sms. I don't play a lot of games on it, especially not some really demanding that could heat phone too much, but could just phone's material expand over time during use and heating, so that it causes some parts of WiFi antenna to separate or something like that?
Anyways, I hope so they release 3,19 soon, so I can try with that.
Here is my thread....

I tested it really hard for a couple of last days . Tried everything and anything that is possible. From factory reset to safe mode, to various apps and options and to no avail.
However, today I noticed that when I connect on my WiFi while I'm near the router I will have full bars and full speed, and as I'm leaving my room and going to other room signal is still decent and I get decent speed, but the if I just make couple of more steps in my living room from the entering doors to living room signal will go to one bar, one dot and eventually disconnect and it will not be able to connect again from that place, so I have to go to my room again where is my router or in the hall and I will connect again and that's how it is going.
I didn't try to root phone nor I will root it until my warranty expires. 550 € is so much for, by all means overpriced devices, I mean in general. You pay them that much for phone and it is still able to screw you up, especially when I'm almost sure that my problem is not related to One X common wi fi problem with squeeze test.
However someone mentioned that next update 3.19 will fix "Wi-Fi reception bug", but I couldn't really find what to they mean by that. Do they admit that there is some kind of issue here with software, or they will just "improve" Wi Fi reception for the devices that are working normally.
Today, I did a factory reset from the bootloader mode, and first 10 minutes after the reset everything was working fine, I was really excited, but then after some time, things didn't go so well, so I got problems again. Connected but no data transfer, or connected but after some time disconnect...
I'm really pissed of. Don't see any logical explanation why would it work after factory reset from bootloader mode, and then fuc* me up again.
I received new 3.20 update today and after some time spent testing WiFi it seems that WiFi is working perfect, just like before. So far so good and I hope so it stays this way. You can lock this thread if you want to. Thanks for help

weak wifi transmission

I recently reverted to stock on my at&t note 2. I am having wifi issues. The phone gets a strong signal from my router (-50) but I get authentication errors connecting if I am not very close. Standing 5 feet from the router I get terrible throughput. I am running dd-wrt and can see that the router is only getting -90 signal from my phone. Every other device is much stronger.
I have tried disabling wifi power save mode and have tried the OTA update to ucamh3 baseband.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
With a weak or malfunctioning wifi setup over multiple roms ....I might suspect a bad antenna ??
Not a for sure thing...but it should be considered...
Several of these devices were returned early on with antenna issues...
With a pure stock UCAMH3 rom running...wifi has been excellent...
I would try a clean slate data reset in recovery...and a router reset as well...
Then set up the wifi again on the device...
It's a long shot...but is certainly a good first step in diagnosing the device and the antenna...
Does the device suffer the same in other wifi areas ??
If not...look back to your home system....g

Thinking it might be a bad antenna, I ordered a replacement housing which (to my understanding) includes the WiFi antenna on the Note 2. No luck. I'm going to try another ROM to see if I have any better luck. If that doesn't work, might buy a new router. I'll update if I find anything that fixes my issue.

I'm on CyanogenMod now with no improvement. Router sees strength of -85 and SNR of 9 when I'm 5 feet away from it.
exact same issues here with i317. wifi worked great for about a year while rooted, and running multiple roms. i loaded SkyNote4.3 and it's been down hill ever since. I'm currently on DN3 4.3 and it works fine if i am close to my router as well. have S4, and Nexus 7 on same router, and they work fine with great signal, so it's not the router. I even removed security from my wifi as a test, and same results.
I have tried reverting to 4.1.2 and still no change. Appears to be SNR related at the moment, as my other wifi devices have 38-50 SNR values on DD-WRT, but my i317 has 10-12. No microwaves or any of that jazz going on, all 3 of these devices sitting next to each other when pulling values.
still investigating, but if anyone has any suggestions i'm open to ideas at this point.
what has been tried: reverting to 4.1.2 stock firmware from sammy, 4.2 bootloaders, 4.3 bootloaders, different modems, different kernels, different roms.
I got a replacement Note 2 from AT&T for this reason. I Googled the problem and found many mentions of it, so I called AT&T and had the CSR Google the problem while I was on the phone..
Of course I hadn't opened it up or anything...
I sent my phone to Samsung twice. The first time they just tried to update the software and claim it was fixed. That obviously did nothing to resolve the problem. I just got it back from a second visit to the service center where they replaced the mainboard. I haven't tried it yet, but expect that solved the problem. I'll confirm later tonight.
yeah, i'm to the point where i believe it's antenna related, and I believe it's on the mainboard. unfortunately it's over my 1 year manufacturer warranty and att is telling me they'd charge me the 200 deductible and just replace it. doesn't seem worth it to me at all. it's just odd that it started out of the blue with a 4.3 skynote rom.

I thought mine was antenna related so I bought a new housing. That didn't fix it. I read where one person bent up the contacts a little so I tried that and it didn't fix it. I never used to believe software would screw up the hardware, but I really believe some firmware has a bug that's pushes too much power to the wifi transmitter and damages it. That's just a hunch from a few posts I've read. It sounds like this may have happened to people with a Samsung OTA update.
If I were you, I'd log onto Samsung's site and just double check that you don't have any warranty left with them. If not, I'd even try chatting with them expressing disappointment in the device. let them know that apple geniuses would take care of you anyways. Maybe they'll be generous.. worth a shot.
So good and bad news. After getting my phone back from Samsung the second time, wifi authentication issues and drops are gone. The strength is good enough to keep me connected around the house, and speed is fairly consistent throughout the house, and is good enough for browser, etc. However, the speed still isn't up to par with other devices. I'm now experiencing 4-5mbps on speedtest.net (vs. ~20mbps on my other wireless devices). :/

Sprint G4 wifi totally sucks

I have a G3 and my wife just upgraded from her Galaxy S4 to a LG G4. The wifi makes the phone completely unusable. I tried a factory reset and it didn't fix anything. I've tried both 2.4 and 5GHz bands and it's never any better. If I switch off wifi and use data, everything's snappy.
Ookla's speedtest takes forever when "Finding the best server" but then once the tests run it's fast 50 down/20 up(at my house). This happens on any wifi network, not just the one at my house. Apps that use data take forever to load, if they load at all. If I load Facebook and click an image that hasn't load yet it takes forever to download.
Phone Model: LGLS991
Access Point Model: Asus N66U Dark Knight
Any suggestions?
Brian
I changed the channel on my router and have yet to have another issue in over a week. I haven't seen any issues on other networks yet for whatever reason.
Not saying there isn't a problem because there definitely is but that helped me.
Sprint G4 also.

That'd maybe fix things at my house but not elsewhere. I think the phone's going to end up going back.

Yeah, I was having a lot of problems at home which is why I testing everything I could. Not sure why I haven't seen the same issues anywhere else.
