I just purchased this phone (i9100) last night after a long travel to track it down. today I simply wanted to update the firmware on it and I was using Odin3 v1.85 to do it but It failed and stayed like that for an hr with the phone in the download mode. I finally disconnected the phone and started it back up and it said " firmware upgrade encountered" with the phone on icon on the left a yellow triangles in the middle and a computer on the right side. Almost looks as though the symbols and words are cutting off the screen.
I can boot into the Download mode but the computer does not recognize the phone anymore nor does Odin or Kies. So I cant even attempt to re-flash the damn thing... I'm so upset right now and feel like taking a hammer to this damn phone...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've don't everything when it comes to drivers uninstalling Kies, using other computers without Kies installed, different ports and cables. I've done it all as far as i can see.... also I cant return the damn thing as i didn't buy it from a store. so im **** out of luck if i cant get this working.... PLS HELP!
Are you sure you are downloading the right version of the drivers? I ask because it sounds like you bought the international galaxy s II and not the Epic 4G Touch but you asking the question in the E4GT forums.
The phone is Sprint branded and so is the box.

Okay, so for future reference... you have the D710, NOT the i9100. (The i9100 is the international SGS2, different enough from the Epic Touch that you can't flash i9100 firmware.)
That said, if you can get into download mode then all is not lost!!
Restart your computer. Also, when you use odin, be sure to go into your Windows task manager and close any Kies tasks/processes that may be running in background. You only need Kies for the drivers it provided when you installed it onto your pc.
Suggest you put your phone into download mode, and follow the instructions in the 1st post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282420
I tried the instructions in the link. however, the problem seems to that the phone is not being detected by the computer or the drivers dont seem to be working. I tried this on my other computer and while the phone is in download mode it is still not being detected by the computer or odin.... what can be causing this as before the firmware update that failed it was being detected perfectly fine.
I pretty much have the exact same problem as posted here.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I was never able to get any computer to recognize the phone in that state. I was able to take it to the Sprint store and they ended up giving me a new one for a small service charge. Since you didn't get it at a store I would contact Samsung and give them the story that cooza suggests in the thread you linked. Good luck and post back if you ever get it working, I am still curious as to what was wrong.
The only thing that might be hampering your effort is Kies might be still active. I overlooked this instruction (as was mentioned in a previous post). Before starting Odin or connecting your phone go into Windows task manager (ctrl/alt/del) and click on processes. Scroll down and you'll probably see a Kies process running. End that process, then try it again.
.....
Sorry but Kies has been completely uninstalled from this computer and the other computer.
are you plugging the phone before or after entering download mode?
I did both before and after to see if that would make a difference, but no go.

I thought you needed the drivers from Kies?
.....
I installed the drivers without it, I downloaded the drivers for my model phone from another member who suggested it.
Try deleting the drivers that u have and reinstalling kies. Use different usb ports.

i would reinstall kies..... or if you have a linux box maybe try heimdall > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265 to flash
Guys, I tried Ubuntu but with no luck. The computer simply will not detect the phone. At this point I believe only Samsung can fix or replace this. I will contact them tomorrow and see. Maybe they will do it for free or maybe they will charge a small fee (small I hope if any) but thank you all for the help.
Hello everyone,
I recently bricked my Epic 4g Touch by accident while trying to upgrade the software. I have no idea how to fix it. I do have insurance on the phone, but I called the insurance and they said that the phone is back ordered so it will take quite a while if I have to get a replacement. So, I REALLY want to try and fix this one.
Now, I know there are other threads about unbricking, but my case is unique and other threads have not resolved my problem. If anyone here could manage to help me unbrick my Epic 4g Touch I would be so appreciative.
When I turn on the phone, it says "Deleting Cryption Meta Data, Copying media files..., Updating Application, and Applying Multi-CSC" then it goes to Android system recovery. The menu options are "reboot system now, apply update from sdcard, wipe data/factory reset, and wipe cache partition".
I can scroll up and down but if I select any item, the screen goes to an image of an exclamation point inside of a triangle. So I cannot navigate or use this menu.
Now, I CAN get into download mode. However, when I load Odin, I cannot get it to detect my phone. The ID:COM area remains blank and will not go yellow. I cannot get my computer to recognize my phone at all.
Can someone please help me with this? I really need to use my phone and I cannot even get a replacement from my insurance because they are back ordered.
Please help. I profoundly appreciate any help you might be able to offer.
Do you have all the correct drivers installed?
install Kies on your computer it will install the drivers. Connect the phone to your computer and let the drivers install. then odin back to stock

I installed the drivers from Kies but my phone still is not detected on my computer. Not in Kies, not in Odin and not in Device Manager. I don't understand it. I have always read that if you can get into download mode, you should be able to unbrick a phone fairly easily. However, I have NOT heard of a phone that turns on yet is not able to be seen by a computer at all.
Do you have any other suggestions? I really don't know what to do because I can't even get a replacement now.
Thanks so much.
I had the same problem, I fixed it by changing the drivers, I needed 64 bit

uninstalling kies deleting the drivers and reinstalling kies fixed it for me once too.
Try what others have said about uninstalling and reinstalling kies, also try another USB cord, on the OG epic I sometimes had to use other cords because odin was being picky.
You are exactly where I was. I posted this previously as well. I kinda thought you had copied my post.
I had to send my phone in to get it fixed. Rather pay $50 instead of $100
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-jtag-brick-repair/
My phone wouldn't connect to my laptop, Linux on my laptop (dual boot), desktop, school computer. It happened when I had flashed a ROM that was the international version. The Galaxy S2 is not the same phone as the Epic 4G Touch. I learned that the hard way.
If nothing works for you, you can send it to that guy up there. And don't worry, he was even recommended here on XDA, so it's safe. If you live in TX, then it's just about a 4-day wait. There is a Shipping map to show you expected waiting time. Expecting mines tomorrow .
I reinstalled the drivers and KIES countless times. I have a x32 bit so there was no problem there. If you did the same thing I did and flashed an Int. ROM, then check to see if there are any Int. GS2 drivers. Like drivers specifically for the GS2. That might work, unless they're all the same drivers.
Go to sprint store and play dumb. Get a jig first and reset odin counter of it says that you have a custom rom installed. They will replace for free

unbrick epic 4G touch
soft bricked my epic 4g touch sent it to Mobile Tech videos in Texas was fixed one day after they received it and returned to me 50 bucks well worth it. Tried to unbrick myself and didn't have any luck.
If you did, in fact, flash an International version of some ROM or another, some people have had luck by installing the USB drivers for the international version. I have not done this, so I can't help you much beyond that, but that should get it recognizing your phone AFAIK.
Yes, i'm a total noob, sorry everyone. I tried to root my T Mobile Galaxy S2 using the Kies/Odin method, and now i'm getting nothing but a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I would happily follow those directions, but now Kies won't recognize my device?!?!? I also can not get back into download mode. I have no idea what to do. Is there anyone out there that can help?
Can you still turn your phone on and use it?

All you need to do is flash it using Odin. Grab the stock rom from the general forum of the galaxy s2 and flash it using Odin.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Did/does Odin recognize the phone? If it does then go ahead and flash the stock Odin firmware package and that should take care of the problem. Same thing happenend to me and all you need to do is set everything up just like normal, go into DL mode and give Odin a few seconds to find a com port and hit start...just pretend the warning is not there.
I have the same thing ...
I was doing a stock upgrade through Kies, and my computer decided to be dumb and install a windows update and restart the computer... I now see the same thing, i had the stock rom, but it was rooted, and when I try to go back in Odin, it never recognizes the phone... Kies won't recognize the phone, neither will Odin... Am I just returning this phone or what?
EDIT: Nevermind, I only bought it 2 days ago, so I just exchanged the phone
Yes, you can flash from that screen -- I managed to brick my Vibrant that way a number of times, and as long as you get that screen (or the Android digging screen) it's recoverable. KIES should be able to recover it as should Odin -- if it DOESN'T work turn OFF the computer (all the way off) and restart it then try again.
Samsung's USB drivers have a habit of getting confused and causing flash failures both in KIES and Odin.
Be aware that if you're trying to use KIES and the "latest" firmware is a non-wipe firmware (as the updates from T-Mobile are) it will happily load onto the phone something that will bootloop into the stock recovery and refuse to start! If you get hosed like this you probably need to Odin back to the ORIGINAL firmware so you get a "full" flash, then use KIES (or ODIN) again to perform the update.

Were you able to exchange your device? And if you did, what did the T-Mobile reps ask you? and what did you tell them? I ran into the very same problem. I tried everything but I'm still stuck on that screen. I don't want T-Mobile to think I purposely did something to make the phone that way.
Hope I'm not too late to help: I had same problem and used odin to fix.
Here's what I did:
Download stock kernel in tar form from the Android devel forum. Start odin, click check box in PDA, click PDA button then select the kernel you just downloaded.
Insert usb into your phone (I left my cord connected to my computer). Start phone in download mode (up+down keys). Once it's started ib DL mode, unplug the usb cord, then after just a few moments plug it in again. If necessary, let it set a few moments until Odin recognizes the device (yellow stripe in id:com to the upper left), now click start in odin.
That fixed my problem. After that I read and reread everything I could get my hands on, but I think I tried flashing a i1900 kernel.....big duh to me, but maybe I'm not that dumb after all!! But, soon after I was able to root, and have flashed several custom ROMs since my little bump in the road.

Took mine to a store, they didn't have any white kits in stock so they told me to call and tell them that it doesn't turn on, got a replacement ordered without having to troubleshoot over the phone.
Had that happen the first day I got the device trying to root up. Accdently pulled usb while updating. All i did was Hold VOL UP + DOWN And Plug usb in and download mode came right back up and started the process all over again.
It was a success as.

we don't have ICS... so I'm not sure if you're in the correct section. is your phone's variant the t-mobile t989 hercules s2?
don't do anything with kies, go to download/odin mode and flash a fresh download of whatever you messed up on... or I would just flash a complete stock ROM.. the ones ending with ".tar.md5".. that should save your phone.

I know. There's number of similar threats. I have read them all. Or at least feels like it.
I managed to soft brick my sgs2. I was playing with this new lol boot (dual boot app) from market. I think I pushed something wrong in this app. After that my intention was to make a CWM backup before I start to play seriously with lol boot. At the second I pressed backup from the menu, my phone shut down. Now I'm in a sitsuation whre I can't enter recovery mode. There's just this Samsung Galaxy logo. At the time I had CheckRom v4 installed.
My intention was to flash stock rom via odin. I can enter to download mode just fine BUT odin or kies isn't able to connect to phone. Kies is recognizing the usb connection, but fails to connect it properly. Here's a list what I've tried so far:
- Restart PC (100x)
- Restart Odin (101x)
- Restart Kies
- Reinstall USB Drivers (with Kies and without)
- Trying different computer which has never seen Kies or any Samsung USB drivers
- Reinstalling Windows (W7 x64)
- 3 different USB cables (2 stock Samsung)
- Different USB ports
- Also Nexus S USB drivers as mentioned on another thead in XDA
- Starting odin after USB connection, and before
- Googling with any keywords I have come up
Is there anything else I can do for now?
you mean when you try to connect to odin there is no yellow square ?
maybe try to remove battery for + 90 sec and try to enter in odin ?
ps in this situation you must forget kies since its barely work when everything is fine with the phone ...
Thanks for your reply. Odin doesn't 'do' anything when i connect my device. I'm using version 4.43. When I connect s2, windows install two drivers, Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device and Samsung Mobile USB Modem. I also tried taking battery off. Actually the battery wasn't attached for 6 hours, still no success.
I didn't see this in your list, but have you tried entering download mode and connecting?

Guys. I think there is some Android God that came to help me. After ~36 hours of googling, crying and throwing the phone to the wall, I've managed to solve my problem! As I was googling cheap shotgun for me, I had a vision. Why not, let's try older odin. The solution was v1.83. And right when I plugged in my phone with this odin, it got recognized! At the same second! Nuff said, I'm satisfied. And do you know what is the best part? I flashed with original stock rom and every app, every launcher and so on was STILL WORKING and running!
Thanks to everyone. I'll be more careful next time!
EDIT: How the heck the custom binary counter went to zero? I was thinking its only possible with usb jig?
not older odin! but the one u need for sgs2 (and 1) only use odin 3 v. 1.83 or v. 1.3.
The one you said IS NOT FOR YOUR PHONE. Sorry I missed that text.
So if I understood you correctly, u are saying that I flashed my phone with wrong version of odin (1.83) ? Sorry, I'cant understand english too good, so can you say your point more literally and s_l_o_w_l_y? Thanks
I only use odin3 v1.3 or odin 3 v.1.83.
As far as I know, you cannot use anything else, since it is not made for your device!
I might be wrong, if so, somebody correct me.
Sent from my GT-I9100
So if you're correct on this, the reason why I couldn't get my phone recognized was the wrong version of odin?

gratz!
to reset your binary, there is only one way to do it. u are right, usb jig.
however, beware, i read somewhere saying that GB ver 2.3.4 onward has a new version of bootloader which prevent usb jig from resetting the counter, which mean samsung is trying to lock the bootloader now. however, flashing the old bootloader still helps (claim by others).
ok i am new to the scene. i had my brother in-law "whom told me he knew how to root it" ok he failed i got my phone back and when i turn it on i get a splash screen that has the samsung galaxy 2 logo a triangle with a exlamation point and says GT-I9100. ok i did some search and found out this is wrong very wrong. so i attempted to get to odin to try to recover what i could. i was unable to access odin so i built the micro usb jtag jig and i am know able to get to odin, but when i plug my phone into my pc thru its usb connection my pc doesnt detect, see, or even regonize my phone can some one please help me
If you are technical enough to build a jtag jig then you can figure out how to root this phone. I dont want to sound like an ass but there are guides and links everywhere here. Also check out qbking77 on youtube and look into an app called triangle away.
ok that is a smart ass reply. first of all if you could see my net history you would see that i have read and tried all that i could.
1. the wrong os for a different carrier was put on the phone
2. i can access odin
3. if you read my post i stated that after i get to odin and plug the phone into the pc the pc CAN NOT EVEN SEE THE PHONE.
4. I have tried all that i can locate and i have not been able to locate any post that are like mine
instead of being an ass and leaving a smart ass remark how about actually helping.
as for making a jtag jig and its relevance to rooting a phone is idiotic since all i did was follow instructions on it
If your phone has the wrong os for a different carrier it would be a brick right now.
Are you saying the phone doesn't boot or do you just have a yellow triangle and usb issues but your phone works?
Did you even load the samsung usb drivers?

Your phone is nice shiny brick if
- There is no recovery to boot to.
- Pc doesnt detect phone when in download mode even with different usb cables and you have tried to clean usb port. Oh and pc already has samsung drivers.

Sadly I think the OP may have had the international bootloader flashed onto the system. If you could get into the system then you could flash Mobile Odin and get a recovery on that would allow you to flash things except for a modem.
As posted above, please try the following thread first:

If this doesn't work then go down the JTAG or replace route. Best of luck and sorry to hear about this.
