Alright, here we go...brace yourselves:
I have the stock ROM, rooted (duh), but running Launcher Pro, not Sense. Am I still restricted to the Sense-only kernels, or can I use the AOSP kernels now? I'm guessing that I can't, since the ROM is still Sense-based even if my launcher is not. Just want to make sure before I really eff things up
Sense only, man on a Sense ROM
Bah, I thought so. I've spent so much time tweaking the stock ROM to where I like it, I'd hate to start over again with CM or some other ROM. I'll give it a go one rainy Saturday, though.
Followup - Is there a download anywhere for the stock kernel? I did a nandroid backup before flashing my current kernel (ChopSuey) about a month ago, but lots have changed on my handset since then and I'd rather not lose those changes by reflashing the backup.
If you can wait a few hours, I have the stock kernel at home I can attach here fore you. It's the Wireless-N kernel, so your WiFi will work with it.
Titanium Backup is your friend if you're going to need to restore your customization and settings for LauncherPro. LP also has a built in backup/restore function.

I use titanium, but that's for apps, not the kernel...

Any chance we will see the switchROM script work for the EVO? I absolutely loved the convenience on my G1 and this would be awesome for the EVO. Especially with number of Devs who are likely to make the jump to the EVO.

We use a app 'rom manager' here, i'm not a fan of it but everyone seems to love it.

Clockwork? Does that essentially do the same thing as switchrom? I used it to backup OMJ, the first Rom I flashed, but hadn't tried to restore.
I'd be cool with using it if it will let me:
restore it like I had it
switch back and forth between complete rom setups like switchrom
switch seamlessly without wipe, nandroid, hassle
Do you know if that is the case?

I guess I'm not sure if that is the same thing, but I'm going to give it a whirl and see how easy/fast it is.

Yes, that you can certainly do. Easiest is to install right from Rom Manager.
What I'm not 100% on yet is if a backup and restore on ROM Mgr is more like a nandroid backup or more like a switchrom backup. I loved switchrom because it basically put your entire rom back exactly as it was previously with every facet saved. Not sure how that is different from a nandroid, but it somehow felt more complete and identical than when I restored a nandroid backup.
Plus it was incredibly easy to switch back and forth between completely customized roms as easy as switching themes. I could run a different rom each hour if I was that neurotic
So far it looks like my ROM Mgr backup is just like a switchrom and even easier to flash, but I am still testing it out.

Any ROM I restore with ROM Manager is EXACTLY like I backed it up with all my txt messages and everything. I mean I literally just load it and im DONE!!
This app is incredible!!
So I'm actually somewhat of a noob to rooting and flashing roms. I had an HD2 that was rooted and what not but really didn't play with it too much. I picked up my G2 the other day and haven't put it down since. This thing is amazing. Now that I've said that.
I rooted it using the rage/ADB way with gfree. I dl'd Rom manager and Kernel manager. Currently running CM7 final with the CM rom. I wanted to try out a couple of the other builds but have already set my phone up for the most part. I was wondering if there is a way to keep settings and such while flashing between roms.
Use MyBackup.

Make a back up in recovery, to keep all your data.
Or use titanium back up.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Use NANDroid backup in CWM recovery to make a complete image of your current ROM and settings.
Use Titanium Backup (in android market) to make a backup of your settings, apps and etc..
Flash your new ROM and use Titanium to restore your apps. I would not recommend restoring your settings as some settings do not exist or are different on other ROMs.
Happy flashing!
Thanks for all the great replies. I have made a backup using Titanium and I have loaded nandroid onto my laptop. I'm going to make a full backup of the device state and commence with the tinkering. Damn I love playing with this kind of technology. Just being able to make changes and see the outcome.

You talking about HardSPL on Windows Mobile phones? Really not the same thing as rooting and Android phone, so probably a good idea to keep the terminology separate.

Sorry for the mix up. Yea the HD2 is HardSPL. Unlock bootloader so you can multi-boot.
I'm helping a friend put CM7 on his Incredible, but he is rather partial to HTC Sense. Is it possible to backup sense on the stock ROM and then restore it on CM7?
So your asking if you can put sense on a aosp rom? I don't think you can do that. Best you could do is theme it to look like sense.
I could be totally wrong about this though.
If he likes sense, why not just put a better sense ROM on it?
sense is built into the framework of an aosp rom.

I think a large part of it is that he doesn't want to have to redo his screens and such. I was basically looking for a way to restore his current setup on whatever ROM we install.
Would this be possible on a sense ROM?
Titanium backup is the closest thing. You can't really mix sense and AOSP
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Well it looks like what we will probably do is flash back to stock GB and then restore data only from Titanium backup for HTC sense.
Should work in theory right?

If you flash back to GB stock then all the sense stuff is already there. TB will restore your apps that you had previously. Whenever I restore from TB I usually do Restore missing apps and data. I have never had any problems when doing that.
is there a way to flash rom's but still have all the apps and screen icons in the same place? I like flashing but hate setting up all the apps and screens to the way i like it..
No your going to lose your apps and placement. If you use Titanium Backup or my backup root you can at least restore your apps. I would not recommend restoring data though it usually causes issues. I just like a fresh install so that I do not have to worry about issues anyway.

If you're going between GB and ICS then you do want to do a fresh install of everything. Same if you're going from a custom ROM to a different ROM. Just about the only time it's really safe to keep the apps and settings is when you're updating to a newer version of the ROM you have. Titanium Backup is what you want to use to back-up your apps and system settings.
Some ROM's have a No-Data version you can flash also. Sfhub's usually do. The No-Data version will keep the apps and everything how they were.

Yes there is. Make a nandroid of your rom setup the way you like it. Then, whenever you want to switch to a new rom, flash that rom, boot, go back into recovery, then go to restore, advanced restore, advanced restore of data from nandroid. I do this all the time and it works very well. This will only work when going from gb rom to gb rom or ics to ics rom though. Going from gb to ics data restore causes issues.

You can still run into problems with restoring that way. You really do want to do a fresh install most of the time. It's kind of a crap shoot as to whether or not it will get buggy from restoring apps like that.
If you're using a custom launcher like Nova or ADW, you can back it up with titanium backup then restore it with data once you've got your new ROM installed and it will still have your screens set up. You'll still need to restore/redownload all your apps though.
Sent while hanging with that really hoopy frood Ford Prefect.
Most custom launchers have a backup/restore preferences setting also. Go launcher saves to sd so it doesn't delete its settings between flashing.

On gingerbread I always used the No Data format all between roms. It was usually from stock to Calks though and never had any issues. But these days going from ICS to ICS i just use Titanium Backup and depending on what launcher I am using just lose widgets and maybe 5 minutes total time out my day.
Hey everyone. Whats up. I am wondering if a complete wipe is mandatory every time when upgrading to a the latest cyanogen mod version? (To Clarify I mean from an older cyanogen 10.1 rom version). If so is there simple instructions that you could give me to explain exactly how?
~Fellow rocker
Thanks in advance

If it doesn't say in the OP where the instructions are, you are normally safe. You can always use Titanium Backup to save all of your apps and settings and them restore them after installing the updated version. Never restore system settings to any ROM that is not what you backed them up from. Apps are fine to do so.

Thanks Gray for your prompt reply, although to sum my question up more, I was really asking something different. You see I have an older version of cyanogen mod 10.1, using the same rom, I'd like to know how to upgrade to the newest version which is Feb 26 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099881 without deleting my data. It kinda sucks to go through this process time and time again lol
~rockingfreely
The answer is in the OP install instructions of that ROM.

the reason you always wipe is to avoid bugs and problems. Even though you can get away with dirty flashing sometimes, most of the time its going to cause problems and lag
Do yourself a favor, buy either titanium backup pro or rom toolbox pro, backup whats important with those, and clean flash. those are the best way to keep things while avoiding problems
