[Q] How to update from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 with no OTA - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I just received my Xperia play and it seems that I got an unbranded European version (r800i) since it just says Xperia Play on the box and the box has french, dutch and other european languages. I'm currently located in the Philippines and the OTA does not work at all. I just get unable to connect even if I am able to browse using the browser through WIFI (no sim is installed).
Can anyone link me to the 2.3.3 firmware + flashtool version to use? I've just rooted my phone with gingerbreak only. I've checked the other tutorials and they all say OTA, which totally does not work for me.
Thanks!
Edit:
Ok, I've installed the application that sort of gets installed and I'm updating to 4.0.A.2.368. I think this is 2.3.3.

PC Companion or flash 2.3.3, I have an unbranded r800i but ota update works for me, Did have problems with it saying No Network found a few weeks back, but a few battery pulls fixed that for me.

[Q] Is there OTA update to newest 4.0.A[...] firmware?

Like in my question. Is there OTA update for UK generic or I'll just have to wait till it's released? My 2.3.3 phone is rooted and I don't want to lose it when updating via SEUS.
I'm on UK generic and no ota update for me yet
I flashed back to 2.3.2 and only get the first update not the 4.0 fw
Only a matter of time though I guess
Got it in Canada yesterday
Just got it for UK generic. Downloading it as I type.
Me too, patiently waits for the OTA update here, good thing they already released it yesterday.. I'm using UK generic too. TS, the availability of the OTA update depends on your place.
can someone confirm OTA update is available for the uk ?, i updated via pc companion and lost root but so I am waiting for OTA to become available
cheers
does root work if you OTA from 2.3.2 to the 2.3.3 (xloud frimware) ?

Yes i received the xloud update (4.0.a) last night over ota and root is still kept. Uk r800i.
If you flash 2.3.2 again then root and ota it will update you to the xloud firmware with root.
1 question do i have to unfreeze all bloatware before i can perform OTA for the new firmware 4.0?
Thanks
Yes you do or else the update will think you have uninstalled them. Just make a list of what you have frozen. Unfreeze > ota to 4.0.a then refreeze whats on your list plus a few other new things.
I just received the upgrade via OTA i guess is to 4.0 since i already have 2.3.3 and the size is 78 mb. I downloaded it correctly, it try to update but after 3 reboots (normal reboots the phone does it itself) it says that could not update, does anyone nows why? I have a rooted Xperia Play and it isnt unlocked.
PD. Everything seems okay it didnt mess up anything, just didnt update correctly.

[Q] Wi-Fi issues on 2.3.3

Hi everyone,
I bought a play yesterday which worked fine out of the box. However, after updating to 2.3.3 my wi-fi connection repeats a process of scanning, connecting and disconnecting from my home network every 30 or so seconds, making the connection unusable.
Ive tried connecting to different networks, setting up a static ip on thephone, installing apps such as bladefix, altering almost all of my router settings and updating its firmware and even calling tech support (one of which told me that he had no idea what the problem could be, and another who told me to root and downgrade the phone, something which is rather not do just yet).
I realise that this may not be the appropriate forum to ask this, but I am really am at a loose end as to where to go to next. Does anybody have any idea what the problem may be?
Cheers,
Russ
Rooting your phone cant downgrade your firmware. But you you should probably downgrade to 2.3.2. What carrier or version do you have?

Join the club! Wifi issues are killing me on 2.3.3. I've yet to try 2.3.4 because I don't want to lose root, but I can confirm that 2.3.2 worked perfectly. I find what helps is to disable mobile data when using Wifi, but the problem is still there.

Thanks for the reply. The carrier is O2 and its the R800i. I'll try to downgrade to 2.3.2 now but hopefully this will only be a short term fix.
@Dassub, I'd love to try 2.3.4 but the phone insists that 2.3.3 is the latest firmware!
Use uk generic 2.3.2 firmware then update ota. U shouldnt have problems with wifi on 2.3.3 cause I once had r800i 2.3.3 on my xp with no wifi issues until I switched to r800a with no wifi issues either. Are you using O2 firmware with their boot logo and bloatware? Maybe its their update that ruins wifi.

[Q] How to update software ???

Hello!
I need to know all the official possible ways available to update the software of my PLAY. Also do mention the best method.
Right now when I go to settings>About Phone> it says that I have the Android version of 2.3.3
I believe there have been 2 software updates since then (correct me if I am wrong).
What do you people think was there any progress in the updates or were they just related to back-end programming?
Thanks.
Im sure 2.3.3 is the latest official version.
Have you connected your phone to your pc and tried that way?
Got my phone today and i have the same version as you, i too get the "your phone is upto date" message.
HTH
Havn't checked through the pc as for yet, but there has to be another update because in this version I cant rotate the menu screen into landscape which I believe was a feature in the latest update.
Which version of the Play do you have?
R800x is the US, and we're stuck at 2.3.3 right now
I think the rest (minus 800at, i haven't heard about them, yet) is at 2.3.3/2.3.4...
My version is r800i. I m not in US actually but in the Middle East. I m pretty sure there is an update bt I m afraid to look for it as it might start updating on its own.
I just need to know all the methods and the best one, and also what data should I back up before updating.
I had an R800a that I flashed to an R800i and in both cases the firmware was still at 2.3.3
Hey what is this flashing stuff, I mean I m new to android and have been using play for over a month, but still don't know what the heck is this android. Please explain this to me. Secondly I also noticed that the updates are country dependent as well like if I m in Norway I have an update version different than that of UK which itself is different than that of Middle East, am I right about this?
And what is the difference between r800x and r800a and r800i and others if there are any?

2.3.4 update on UK generic?

Is the 2.3.4 update on the UK generic already realeased? I dont want to miss anything :S
If not, how long will it take?
No, but you can flash the nordic version 2.3.4. Its basically the same (r800i). The only thing I see problematic is when a newer update comes and nordic region doesn't get it. But again you can just flash to what ever region that gets it first.
Xperiablog has evidence that it will be released oct-nov, most likely you'll see it late november.

I'm on a UK sim free handset and no ota here yet either :-\

If you use SEUS on a pc/laptop, etc, then pick your phone(Xperia Play - R800), you will get the latest UK Generic update, version 2.3.4 - 4.0.2.A.0.42.
It's live now..
Just download 4.0.2.A.0.42 and flash that to your phone. I still haven't received the 2.3.4 update and I live in the UK.

Grab it here :
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...ds/subject/updateservice/1.349192?cc=gb&lc=en
Install it, make sure your connected to the net, run it, then it will update itself, select the Xperia Play(R800), from the list, it will give you instructions on how to connect the phone, download and flash the update.
I had 2.3.2, 2.3.3 uk updates, and had a flickering video light, Nordic 2.3.4 was the same, flickering, 50 times a minute, mis-timing, the Chinese/world update, did the same, but this one, the UK version, doesn't, so somethings been fixed somewhere along the line.
All updated and running fine.

will updating via SEPC relock the bootloader?
Thanks, updated to 2.3.4 now, free space doesn't seem to be any better though, I thought 2.3.4 decreased the dalvik cache?
Also remember that 2.3.4 breaks psxperia
hmm no update on seus or the companion thing software. still 2.3.3 on an o2 locked up untouched phone but with a tesco sim
No updates showing up for generic UK 2.3.3 (rooted with bloatware frozen). Should I be unfreezing the bloatware before checking for updates in SEUS?
Actually, can anyone tell me the differences between updating via OTA or manually flashing it?
If you say it's losing root, I don't see whats the problem cause we can re-root it in minutes anyways..
Hi guys, gave up on useless pc companion not updating my phone, just updated my phone using Wotanclient (wotanserver.com , can't post/insert link because i'm new member, too much restrictions) free of charge, all versions available, updated to 2.3.4 uk. 15mins very easy process. I ran Pc Companion afterwards and reported same message as before "You phone is up to date", for testing purpsoses I ran the repair option and Pc Companion installed the latest version this time and reported "Xperia Play (R800) was updated with 4.0.2.A.0.42"
I love the BBC iplayer option on this version.

LT18a - Upgrade Options - Bootloader locked

Hi all,
I own an LT18a which appears to be an LT18i equivalent? It's an Xperia Arc S, Central American GSM version.
It is SIM unlocked however it's made after 12W11 so I cannot unlock the bootloader. In the root status it says Bootloader Unlock is not allowed.
It is trapped on Android 2.3.4 which is horrible. No OTA available.
I am wondering what my options are, I have searched but seem to hit dead ends. Is there any alternate way to unlock the bootloader, I tried a few paid services but they said after 12W11 there is no support.
Can I install leaked 4.1 official firmwares like the UK one posted here via flash tool or can I not install anything except what is OTA (nothing at the moment).
Thanks in Advance
You can install via flashtool a ftf file
Also sony have given us a update to ICS 4.0.4
U may get it from PC companion Or a ftf file
I dont think there is a leaked 4.1 update
U may also root ur phone and then install Custom GB roms for locked bootloaders

You can update to Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0.4, via PC Companion.
At the moment, there is no way for you to unlock the bootloader.
There are no 4.1 official firmwares for our phones, only the ones is xda-developers.
Thanks and thanks! 4.0.4 beats 2.3.4. I will upgrade, thanks everyone!
ICS 4.0.4 might be newer but I'd say that 2.3.4/2.3.7 GB is running much smoother on our devices, so I would not upgrade your phone, but it is your choice
