[Q] How to update software ??? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I need to know all the official possible ways available to update the software of my PLAY. Also do mention the best method.
Right now when I go to settings>About Phone> it says that I have the Android version of 2.3.3
I believe there have been 2 software updates since then (correct me if I am wrong).
What do you people think was there any progress in the updates or were they just related to back-end programming?
Thanks.

Im sure 2.3.3 is the latest official version.
Have you connected your phone to your pc and tried that way?
Got my phone today and i have the same version as you, i too get the "your phone is upto date" message.
HTH

Havn't checked through the pc as for yet, but there has to be another update because in this version I cant rotate the menu screen into landscape which I believe was a feature in the latest update.

Which version of the Play do you have?
R800x is the US, and we're stuck at 2.3.3 right now
I think the rest (minus 800at, i haven't heard about them, yet) is at 2.3.3/2.3.4...

My version is r800i. I m not in US actually but in the Middle East. I m pretty sure there is an update bt I m afraid to look for it as it might start updating on its own.
I just need to know all the methods and the best one, and also what data should I back up before updating.

I had an R800a that I flashed to an R800i and in both cases the firmware was still at 2.3.3

Hey what is this flashing stuff, I mean I m new to android and have been using play for over a month, but still don't know what the heck is this android. Please explain this to me. Secondly I also noticed that the updates are country dependent as well like if I m in Norway I have an update version different than that of UK which itself is different than that of Middle East, am I right about this?
And what is the difference between r800x and r800a and r800i and others if there are any?

[Q] How to update phone to latest version of android after rooted

I have 2.32 rooted, I want to update my phone to the latest version but some of my stock apps and stuff are deleted what do i do? Using rogers r800a. rooted with gingerbreak. Someone said use SUES to reinstall the original phone software. How exactly do I do this?
Ok so I think I have figured it out. I used SEUS and i updated.re back but I noticed there was no option to update R800a only r800 so thats what I did. All my stock apps are back and now im running 2.33. 2.33 seems exactly like the one before, there is still no landscape mode on the main screens which i thought i heard was updated.

2.3.4?

I have just checked OTA update and found an update that has xloud (boosts music when played through speaker), stereo recording (shoot video with high quality stereo sound), digital home (dlna), and finaly landscape homescreen. is this the 2.3.4 update? because I am already on 2.3.3
No, that's the 4.0.A-something update from Sony Ericsson. Still 2.3.3.
oh, I didnt know that they did updates within the current version of firmwares, I thought it was a new revision number each time. Do you think I could safely install this is I have unlocked bootloader and blagus? custom 2.3.3 rom that comes with root?

No you'll brick your phone when you have an unlocked bootloader and doing any kind of official update with either SEUS, PC Companion or OTA. You need to reloock your bootloader according to blagus tutorial, wich you can find it in the dev section. I take you have a r800i if not it might be a different story, but then you can check the dev sectioon for info on the r800x.
Regards Dousan...
e: I'm not sure if you need to flash a stock rom before updating or you can do it straight after relocking the bootloader. You'll havd to read that relock thread and ask there if you don't find your answer.
yes r800i, thanks dousan. I think I shall leave this update, nothing special added and dont really want any hassle there may be. Think I will wait to see if ice cream sandwich comes out, unless some how the 2.3.4 update allows tv out through livedock which Im guessing isnt possible
ok the play has its own dock without hdmi out
Does any TELCEL user (mexican carrier) knows if the 2.3.3 with XLOUD is already available for Mexico? I like to try the new features available, but I haven't rooted/unlocked bootloader my phone because of warranty issues (sony ericsson already let me down once... never again).
Thanks
Just checked for update and Telcel hasn't released it yet.
I don't want to loose warranty either, maybe after atleast half a year if stuff out there is really good for me. They handle shipping and all the paper work for us so it's good to have it just in case.

So I guess you are running out of internal space as I do. It's f$)&[email protected] frustrating...

[SOLVED] [Q] Where can I find my phone's original firmware?

TL;DR version available at the bottom of the post.
Hello, I have a Sony Xperia Play model R800at from AT&T that originally ran 2.3.3 out of the box, and I read that you can root a Sony Xperia Play by flashing the firmware to 2.3.2 then rooting it and afterwards upgrading back to 2.3.3.
So here's the kicker, I mistakenly downloaded the 2.3.2 firmware for the Sony Xperia Arc, and my phone refused to boot after flashing. Next, I downloaded 2.3.2 firmware for Sony Xperia Play from here, and after flashing that my phone was able to boot but "android.process.media" is force closing every few seconds.
I gave up on trying to root my phone and just wanted to make my phone normal again so I went in search of my phone's original firmware in order to flash that in hopes of bringing the phone back to normal and stopping "android.process.media" from crashing so much. So after searching up and down and high and low for my original R800at 2.3.3 firmware from AT&T, I couldn't find it anywhere! Does anybody have it or does anybody know how to fix my phone?
TL;DR: Stupidly flashed wrong firmware, can't find right firmware to flash. Firmware I'm looking for: USA Sony Xperia Play model R800at Android version 2.3.3 from AT&T.
Just flash the north American 2.3.3. Its way better then the att version.

Can you please tell me where I may get that firmware from?
EDIT: Will it come with the bloatware that came with my phone? Because I got different bloatware when I flashed the generic UK firmware and believe it or not I miss my old bloatware.
Not much bloat really. It's in the development section I think.

Apparently my phone was still under warranty, so I sent it in and got a new one for free so everything is all fine and dandy now. Of course, I didn't tell them that my phone was acting up because I flashed the firmware.

Were you able to access 4G with Generic 2.3.3? (Did the "H+" appeared?)

2.3.4 update on UK generic?

Is the 2.3.4 update on the UK generic already realeased? I dont want to miss anything :S
If not, how long will it take?
No, but you can flash the nordic version 2.3.4. Its basically the same (r800i). The only thing I see problematic is when a newer update comes and nordic region doesn't get it. But again you can just flash to what ever region that gets it first.
Xperiablog has evidence that it will be released oct-nov, most likely you'll see it late november.

If you use SEUS on a pc/laptop, etc, then pick your phone(Xperia Play - R800), you will get the latest UK Generic update, version 2.3.4 - 4.0.2.A.0.42.
It's live now..
Just download 4.0.2.A.0.42 and flash that to your phone. I still haven't received the 2.3.4 update and I live in the UK.

Grab it here :
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...ds/subject/updateservice/1.349192?cc=gb&lc=en
Install it, make sure your connected to the net, run it, then it will update itself, select the Xperia Play(R800), from the list, it will give you instructions on how to connect the phone, download and flash the update.
I had 2.3.2, 2.3.3 uk updates, and had a flickering video light, Nordic 2.3.4 was the same, flickering, 50 times a minute, mis-timing, the Chinese/world update, did the same, but this one, the UK version, doesn't, so somethings been fixed somewhere along the line.
All updated and running fine.

will updating via SEPC relock the bootloader?
Thanks, updated to 2.3.4 now, free space doesn't seem to be any better though, I thought 2.3.4 decreased the dalvik cache?
Also remember that 2.3.4 breaks psxperia
hmm no update on seus or the companion thing software. still 2.3.3 on an o2 locked up untouched phone but with a tesco sim
No updates showing up for generic UK 2.3.3 (rooted with bloatware frozen). Should I be unfreezing the bloatware before checking for updates in SEUS?
Actually, can anyone tell me the differences between updating via OTA or manually flashing it?
If you say it's losing root, I don't see whats the problem cause we can re-root it in minutes anyways..
Hi guys, gave up on useless pc companion not updating my phone, just updated my phone using Wotanclient (wotanserver.com , can't post/insert link because i'm new member, too much restrictions) free of charge, all versions available, updated to 2.3.4 uk. 15mins very easy process. I ran Pc Companion afterwards and reported same message as before "You phone is up to date", for testing purpsoses I ran the repair option and Pc Companion installed the latest version this time and reported "Xperia Play (R800) was updated with 4.0.2.A.0.42"
I love the BBC iplayer option on this version.

Blue Xperia Play 4g, need baseband..having problems

Hey guys, I was hoping I would'nt have to do this but i'm at a loss now.
I own the blue xperia play 4g phone and currently using it with straight talk service with their unlocked sim. Everything was fine until I decided to start trying out custom roms.
No matter what I tried, I could get them to load, work , function ect BUT I had weird issues where people could not hear me for the 1st call, but if I called them right back they could. It just seemed to be random and I could'nt put my finger on it.
So I flashed back to the stock 2.3.3 R800AT firmware, and then updated thru their Sony patch they made me do on the phone...and everything was fine again.
Well I got adventurous again, and UNLOCKED my bootloader. So NOW....after doing custom roms, I CANNOT reload my old R800at 2.3.3 firmware and get the OFFICIAL update from them. So i'm stuck with an upgradeable working 2.3.3 (this is the 2.3.3 before the update they put out, I know it does'nt go to 2.3.4. but its some kinda 2.3.3 update) with NO further updates.
So after tons of research i'm HOPING its the baseband I need ??? I dont know what else to do. Only other option is if some kind soul wants to send me over their AT&T r800AT 2.3.3 UPDATED firmware I'll just go back to stock but i'd prefer to keep using my custom roms!!!
***maybe if someone who has the blue xperia play 4g version, would post the "baseband" version they see on their phone, even that would help!!!***
Any help would be great and more than appreciated.
God bless and thanks guys,
Jason

Oh my friend, you are in the same boat as me. xD
All you need to do is get the stock 2.3.3 AT&T firmware, But you can also use r800i firmwares and update to 2.3.4 with the latest firmware.
Theres a thread somewhere containing the firmware, if not you can find it on google.
(Which is what im doing right now with straight talk) only negative thing I see is so far H instead of H+.
Dito on the baseband, the flashtool links with FTF 2.3.3 is down my phone is softbricked though

If alejandrissimo unlocked your phone you should have OTA updates. If you unlocked it with another method then im not sure what to tell you, gotta find the updated FTF files.
Guys good news here
I was correct in thinking it was the baseband on our phone that is causing the problem. I think its due to the fact we are 4g rather than 3g.
So how did i fix this problem??? Simple. I was able to use the doomkernel v13 (any seem to work), actually install the rom of choice, (i'm using Jokawild 2.5), and then downloaded/installed baseband file -36.
I also installed the -36 libs package that was somewhere posted on here its the new .386 version.
Everything is working now and i'm happy. Going to save the baseband/lib files so i have them forever incase something happens.
Take care, God bless and thank you for your input/time. I could'nt go another day with them stock at&t roms!!!!

Hello hello, I need your help. I've got the generic North Am. 2.3.4 (.42) and I'm having this problem. I've got an unlocked bootloader and I want to install the baseband file. Can I do that with a generic rom? What is the process for installing a baseband file and libs package? Where can I get these files? Thanks.

I think I have the same or a similar problem. I frequently encounter a similar situation where it could take 10+ seconds before the other person can hear me speak, but I can hear them the whole time. By now most of my friends and family know how to deal with it, but before they would just hang up on me. Then they could hear me if I called them. If I reboot the phone, it fixes it for a while, but then it comes back after some time and takes another reboot to resolve.
My phone is a SIM unlocked, bootloader locked Xperia Play R800a model from last year's Google I/O. It uses the same frequencies as AT&T for 3G and 2G and I'm using it on AT&T as well. I have the Generic North America 4.0.2.A.0.42 (Android 2.3.4) ROM installed, and it has Baseband 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56.
I found a separate thread with the -36 Baseband here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469473
I'm considering flashing this over my current -56 Baseband to see if it improves the situation. As I recall, I never had this sort of trouble when I first got the phone. It's really only been since I updated to Firmware .42 that I've had these problems. Is it safe to do this?
Thanks!

Awesome! That's also funny because I also installed the -36 baseband last night. So far, so good. Calls and data both work as normal. I'll need to do more testing to be sure whether it fixed my problem or not.
Now did you just install the baseband or did you also flash or push the libs to it as well? All I did was use Flashtool to flash the baseband .ftf file.
