I recently had to return my 003 Evo to stock so I could take it to Sprint.
When I got home I went to get revolutionary so I could get s-off again and start having fun. When I went to get my hboot version I discovered that I seem to have somehow ended up with hboot-6.17.0001 which is a way higher number than the revolutionary form claims to support.
I also tried running revolutionary anyway to get a serial number, as some tutorial I read suggested, and it claimed I was already s-off.... but according to my bootloader I'm not.. weird.
Anyway I was wondering if there is any way for me to get s-off, I really don't wanna be stuck on the awful stock rom, I'm not afraid of adb or anything like that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're going to have to run the latest RUU to get back to 2.16, then you can run Revolutionary. RUUing will wipe your data, just a heads up.

You can flash a new hboot in recovery. I flashed the newest one and wouldn't boot. Then I was told to reflash my kernel after and all is well. Although... I just realized I'm already rooted. Maybe there is an update.zip floating around you can use. Get a better answer than mine before trying anything.

Thanks for the reply but you have to be rooted to flash the hboot

Don't update hboot (if you even can without root...), you'll just make more work for yourself! 0.97 is much easier to root than 2.02. You can still one-click root 0.97. Consider yourself lucky he doesn't have a newer phone with 2.02.

Which hardware version Evo? It won't let you retry to flash?

What hboot version did the evo have? Did u check it before you rooted? If I were you, I would download a ruu and return the evo to stock and then try to reroot ....the hboot version you have will determine the root method you use..it is quite possible the hboot you have is not compliant with unrevoked ...there fore causing the issue you currently have...

yeha I think your best bet is to run the RUU ( which is a program to run on your PC to reflash your Evo back to factory specs ) and then read and read and read the rooting guides before you do it. You have to check hardware versions, make RSA back ups, hboot versions etc.
I just tried to unroot my htc evo. Initially I has S-OFF, so I applied the S-ON patch, this changed me to S-ON. I then tried to flash PC36IMG.zip from and I was getting Main version is older. It looks like I am running hboot 0.93.0000. Any help is appreciated.

I downloaded the one in the thread. I was doing some searching and maybe this has to do with my hboot version? I was able to restore a nandroid backup, so I'm back at CM7, but I need to unroot so I can get the lcd on my phone fixed.
My buddy just unrooted his evo as well for the same issue, we just compared the radio and hboot version. Both are running hboot 0.93.0000, the difference is on the radio versions, mine is 2.15.00.11.19 his is 2.15.00.07.28. So is the "Main Version in older" error happening because of the radio version?

If you want to completely unroot just flash the s-on then run the ruu exe file. Make sure you have htc sync installed. It might be easier this way. Try running it in bootloader in fastboot mode. Just a suggestion......

So when you say completely unroot, will that cause me any issues on rooting again? I will want to root again once I get my phone fixed.

If you unroot you WILL be able to root again as long as you don't accept the OTA GB update. Accepting the ota will leave without root for good.....at least until a new method is achieved.

I'm sure by now you have found out that yes, the radio version does make a difference, downgrade your radio to get the son.
the 3.70 ruu did the trick, thanks for the help guys
ok guys I have tried just about all threads and searches,I been at this since 9 am and still no results.I need to take my phone in so I need the S-on,I was on Synergy Rom tried to use unrevoked forever which didnt work I was on amon ra recovery but switched to clockwork where I had backups and tried unrevoked forever and still no S-on, My software info is as follows : baseband:2.15.00.05.02
software #3.29.651.5 and pri version is 2.15_003 : My hboot is 0.97.0000, I unrooted actuallly a couple of times and never had this problem followed the directions before and they worked to perfection.I believe the problems exist with my radio # as this is the error that my recovery is giving me : stating unsupported radio version .Any help please thank you
Downgrade your radio to an unrevoked compatible version. Then flash unrevoked forever. Should be that simple.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Try downgrading your radio first to the version that came with 3.29 so it matches the software. Don't worry about the S-ON. Leave it off that way when u take it in even if anyone applies some sort of update you will still be good. Also, did you use unrevoked originally to obtain s-off?
Do Flash only the radio ? Meaning I found the correct radio do I have to worry about my wimax keys or does in come with the radio I'll be flashing ?
1) You're trying to get it s-on, but you're flashing unrevoked forever. Unrevoked forever gives you s-off, you'd need the s-on tool instead.
2) Sprint will service your phone if it is s-off, so leave it off to keep the possibility of rooting open. If the store tells you otherwise, tell them to double check Sprint's policy.
3) You will however need to flash it back to stock unrooted. Run an RUU from your computer or as a PC36IMG through your bootloader to achieve this.
Bonus - Even if your phone has to be replaced, hopefully Sprint/HTC/whoever won't flash it back to s-on and someone on xda will get lucky and get your s-off refurb. Either way I wouldn't bother with the s-on tool, just run the RUU and you'll be set.

Just flash the stand alone radio. Not a combo with the wimax pri and NV. Then unrevoked forever will work.

Why did you take the time to write out a long reply when you clearly didn't read his entire post. He has the gingerbread radio. He can't use the s-on tool until he downgrades to a compatible radio.

He is saying to leave S-Off, just RUU so it will be stock unrooted. Leaving it S-Off so that if some poor chap receives the phone refurbished, he won't have to worry if it is Gingerbread unrootable, as it is S-Off.
Hi guys,
I'm helping a friend root his EVO 4G. I asked for some help doing this on another friends phone a while back as it was shortly after 2.3.3 was released OTA. Well that worked well, and so I run into this issue.
This EVO, the one I'm helping my friend with now, is also running 2.3.3. There are a number of new ROMS out there now and I was looking towards maybe flashing a Sense 3.0 ROM.
But I'm unsure as to which rooting method to use. It was a bit more complex the first time as 2.3.3 was new and you could not S-OFF then. But if I can I would like to S-OFF this EVO.
Can you guys post some links to the threads where I can find the help that I need? Does UnrEVOked support 2.3.3 now???
Any help would be much appreciated...

Revolutionary.io is the only way to root the phone

Thanks evo4gnoob. I've never heard of that but I'll check into it. Thank you for the post!
If the phone has 2.18 hboot, then just give revolutionary.io some time to update...

PAingulNx, that would be dependent on what Hboot the phone has, to what method of rooting you would use. As {ParanoiA} stated, you can wait for revolutionary.io to update for Hboot 2.18 (if that's what the phone is on) or try unlocking the bootloader via HTCDEV method. Which I try to explain here, not sure if I did a good job, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21680991&postcount=1.
HBOOT Version
Thanks guys...
It's been a minute since I've rooted an EVO. Can I check the HBOOT version in "Software Information" or do I need to boot in to Recovery?
In software information I have two numbers that resemble the HBOOT version.
The first is "Baseband Version" which is 2.15.00.0808. The other is the PRI Version which is 2.15_003.
Are either of these the HBOOT version?
Thanks again and sorry for the newb question...

Hey guys,
Revolutionary worked beautifully! My friend's EVO now has S-OFF and ROOT...
All I need to do now is determine which ROM to use. I still have Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo and I see now that 3.5 is out. So I will be flashing that soon. But for my friend's EVO I'm still not sure.
Any suggestions?
