[Q] usb cable?? hdmi port?? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello guys..
i bought my xperia arc 2 days ago..
can i use the hdmi port from xperia arc to my laptop to send files to my laptop??
thanks...

sadly, although the HDMI interface is bestowed with a high bandwidth, it can only be used to transfer video and audio signal at the moment.
to transfer data, you have to use a micro-USB cable which can be inserted in the upper right side of the phone.

MHL & USB host

Anyone know if it's possible to use MHL in conjunction with a microUSB to USB host adaptor to output to HDMI and access an external USB drive at the same time? That'd make the SGS2 an amazing portable media unit.
No, it is not posible. Its an either/or connection to the micro USB port.
Shame, because as you say that would really be a great thing. MHL consortium are considering a number of improvements to the 2.0 MHL spec, so in future devices this may be a possibility.
So MHL can't be used when I'll plug a USB-Hub?
No, sadly not.
It's a shame - for now I'd prefer micro USB & separate HDMI port so USB can be utilised as well as an external display.
As would I, and a lot of others I suspect.
But you've got 16 GB memory and can copy your stuff to the memory and watch it later via MHL on your Flat? So this is not a big problem, I think

Yes, but 16Gb of FAT32 and you can't copy a file > 4Gb
I would use allshare to stream the movie or whatever to your phone from a laptop and connect the phone to TV via the MHL HDMI adapter...that way you have access to ur laptop's data without being hardwired to it

Not that I'm aware of...
I bought one from Ebay and can't really do anything good with it. Display shows briefly for 3-4 seconds on TV then disappears again. Don't know why.....I hope it's not the device itself because I tested 2 phones, they were bought at the same time, but none of them would work correctly....
If by generic you mean a not samsung one or one not dedicated to the SGS2 then i actually use a one, from ebay or someting like that, everything works perfect you just cant forget to plug power to it, and about the not working one, it seems mine gets jammed by gsm signal (i.e. when receiving a call), so from time to time the image disappears in a blink of noise, maybe that is your problem too, try it in airplane mode.
Oh, I think I misread that question - I have actually used a generic one with my SGSII (a prototype from the MHL consortium) and it worked fine!

Uhm no. I've been streaming with WIFI through MHL no problem for MONTHS. Using the Original Samsung MHL connector of course.
I have to put mine in offline mode to be able to use the MHL adapter.....
As for USB-OTG no luck yet.....
On Amazon, Ebay, DealExtrem ... you will find adapters that can do 3 things at a time:
- output HDMI
- let phone work as usb host, so that you can plug kbd, mouse, and external HDD (second wifi card, wired ethernet ...); once you have the usb A plug, just pub a hub
- recharge the phone (what is not possible with the legacy short OTG cable).
+ read memory cards
Such devices are sold as MHL devices. Some MHL devices don't to all that.
Take care. MHLv2 is more complex than MHLv1.

Could you post a link as an example for such a device, that works properly (if you've tested, or you know it works) ?
Thank you
I can post links, but ... I have not tested any of those. And don't know any one personally who tested it.
Cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Juiced-Systems-MHL-Adapter-MicroSDHC/dp/B008CQKM2U
http://www.dx.com/p/5-in-1-micro-us...n-micro-usb-adapter-black-257780#.U8HYDNePul0
Monobloc:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Micro-USB-Ho..._MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item258600844e
I don't like the monobloc version; I fear it's too heavy, and may help breaking the phone plug.
There are all sorts of OTG and MHL cables. I have seen OTG dongles as short as 4cm (monobloc), with small cable (8cm: 4-8€), with long cable (1.5m .... should be 7 feet), pure HDMI (passive cable, no card reader, 8-12€), VGA (including very cheap HDMI to VGA converter, 20-30€ ... including sound output). In some case, you need to buy accessories (extra power supply, extra uUSB cable, extra HDMI cable). Also seen a very cute hybrid card reader: http://dx.com/p/285865 (I love this product design, and I love this URL syntax )
Don't forget that there can be mistakes in item description.
Here I have described how to build an external battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54036759&postcount=17
On previous phone, I just soldered additional battery to internal one; on my new phone, I will do something more complex, and more flexible.
Loosing power via OTG/MHL is not a fatality. Most phone have an other hidden power input:
généric, that uses the USB plug:
http://www.dx.com/p/reverse-qi-wire...arger-receiver-for-micro-usb-cellphone-312805
TRIPLE CHECK POLARITY; I took the wrong one; have to fold the cable.
So ... even if your OTG/MHL module takes power from your USB, and can not recharge your phone, the specific shell can charge your phone the other way So, you need to build an internal specific module:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK7PRJ4SiK0
S2 specific back shell, so called receiver:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2013-newest-wireless-charger-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/1266101036.html
http://www.exportprive.com/en/batte...reless-charger-set-for-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/QI-Wireless-Charger-for-Samsung-Galaxy_821969998.html?s=p
The SGS2 is not designed to accept wireless chargers, so, you have two options:
- solder and take the pins out (cf youtube) (do not solder coild to battery, or you could overcharge the batt, and burn your phone ... I mean, physically set fire)
- find an item that includes back shell + specific battery (exportprive)
Many recent phones have the internal connectors, so you just need to change the back-cover. In this case, the software will be able to know the charger is wireless (as opposed to AC, and USB; advanced battery tools will show those 3 possibilities). I believe the motherboard for my HTC One M8 is designed to have those pins, but I can't find the specific cover yet (maybe in a few months); only found it for M7.

Lapdock HDMI

I can confirm that the lapdock does indeed work as a hdmi monitor and usb mouse / keyboard, I had some spare time and tried it out.

I just spliced a USB A to a micro USB female, works great on my ps3. I just connected USB Rx Tx and ground, Don't bother connecting USB +5vdc red as it sends power up stream and may damage whatever your connecting it to.

It'd be awesome if you could post some pictures, such as a game console or camera
So far I just connected it to my laptop by holding it. I have an adapter I bought off dealextreme that converts micro female hdmi to full size hdmi. I had to file the female side down a bit but nothing more. If I can find my hdmi genderbender then I'll post it with my xbox360 or ps3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-male-to-micro-hdmi-female-adapter-converter-81206
that is awesome, a female micro hdmi to female hdmi cable is impossible to find I'm sure

The lapdock keyboard and touchpad work just like a normal USB keyboard and mouse. I just used a ps3 as a good proof of concept. But it'll work on anything else that has HDMI / DVI and USB. I'm going to use mine as a cheap rack controller with a KVM.
@callen81, I see there are 2 HDMI to micro HDMI connectors on dealextreme. The one you've posted is $5, and the other one is $4.10. The cheaper one also has a smaller form factor. Maybe it'll fix without any modifications. Anyway, I just wanna ask is there any reason why you've decided to purchase the expensive one? Thanks!
Here is the link to the cheaper one.

Awesome find callen81!
If I get a "Gold Plated HDMI Female to HDMI Female Adapter/Converter" (search on dealextreme) coupled with the HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter, I should be good to go right?
@callen81: Out of curiosity do you happen to have Rock Band 2 with a Rock Band 2 Guitar? If so, I'd love for you to run the auto-calibration test on the Laptop monitor and let us know what the Video Response Time is (aka input lag). If it's under 16.6ms, then it is considered sub 1 frame lag. If you don't have this, I'll do this test myself when I get my Laptop monitor up and running and report back!

I don't have Rock Band, that HDMI micro female to HDMI male looks identical to the one I have. Looks just to be cheaper? As well I just used a hdmi female to female gender bender for a wall plate and it seems to have worked fine. A HDMI extension cable would probably be ideal.
Where did you get the female micro usb as well? FRom video it looks like the hdmi adapter takes up almost all the room so I am just wondering how hard is it to fit them plugged in at same time
Is there anyway to make an extender (female to male) for both the HDMI and USB connections? I would love to be able to use my atrix as a webcam for skype or goggle talk since the screen blocks the view of the phone when the lapdock screen is up.

Mac Mini?
All the more reason to pick up the dock while its being sold for $50 on ATT.
Someone should connect this to a Mac Mini and you would have your very own PAAH (Portable as Hell Hackintosh)

[Q] Captivate Glide Reboot when Plugging in MHL Adapter

Running SGH-I927RUXKJ5_STOCK_ROOTED. Phone reboots when plugging in a Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter. Upon reboot phone operates normally but no display on the external monitor. Anybody have MHL adapter working on Captivate Glide? Thanks for any help.
I ordered mine on ebay.
Phone doesn't reboot when connecting MHL cable.
But no video output to HDMI ...
I'm running Rogers ROM + Cranium kernel.
Edit :
it works !
You just need to connect the adapter to the power supply.
Just tested it with a HDMI videoprojector.
Powerpoint presentation displayed full screen.
Video file as well.
No lag at all.
Didn't check if audio was routed through HDMI (the videoprojector I used doesn't support it).

I can confirm that audio works. Anything you can see or hear on the phone goes to the TV.
I get video but no audio but that might be because of my audio setup.
I have tried it as well with a MHL adapter I bought at Monoprice and you do get audio. I have noticed sometimes it does not work though when I plug it in. I do not know why. I am wondering if the MHL adapter I bought is flaky or if Our phone is sometimes picky.
i checked the connection, video and sound work great.
No connection loss.
Connection works everytime I connect the cable.

Have you any issues with the length of your HDMI cable I found 3 feet works but 10 feet does not did not try a 6 foot as did not have 1 at the time. I think it can not be to long as it needs power from the micro USB and too long may not have enough power. Just curious on the length of your HDMI?

Are you asking where to download SGH-I927UCLG9, or are you asking whether SGH-I927UCLG9 is compatible with hdmi, or what are you asking?
What makes it work?
Is the MHL functionality connected to the ROM you use, or the device? or both? I have a kitkat rom and was hoping that would make it work, but it doesn't, and didn't with the official Ice Cream Sandwich version either.
I don't have an MHL adapter, but I'd try cleaning the USB connector on the phone. The reason I say this is that my i927 would sometimes have trouble connecting to the PC by USB and often, when receiving a phone call, it'd switch to car mode, as if I had a car accessory connected.
I cleaned the connector on my phone by rubbing the contacts first with an x-acto blade, then with a piece of paper with WD40 backed by the blade and finally with another piece of paper with ethyl alcohol. Don't forget to remove the battery before trying this and be very gentle to avoid breaking the connector.

htc one x digital audio out? is this possible?

Hi, I'm wondering if it would be possible to connect the HTC one x with it's micro USB port to a coaxial input on an amplifier. This without the use of an AD converter.
I bought a wadia powerdac 151 mini and would love to do this.
If there is no possibility I would like to know if there is an other high end smartphone that could pull it off.
Ps I know there is a second component in the wadia line that has an iPhone connector, I just don't want that component nor do I want an iPhone
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Can think of some ways to do this but they are not at all elegant:
You can get digital output via HDMI by using an MHL adapter. Since your amp doesn't have HDMI inputs you would also need to get an HDMI to SPDIF converter like this http://www.amazon.com/HDmi-Audio-Converter-Convert-Video/dp/B0015DTUJ8 (there may be something similar with coaxial). There are other messy ways of doing this such as passing HDMI through a TV and back out of the TV via SPDIF - but you would need to keep the TV on to get audio.
Similarly, some of the above could be done with WiFi using the the HTC media link HD instead of an MHL adapter.
Alternatively, you could use Bluetooth lossless APT-X. However, the receivers I can find only output in analogue, which is not much use to you. And bluetooth is only good for streaming music - video would be out of sync.

You first need a usb otg cable. It's micro usb male win a female usb on the other end. Then plug your jab sound device (like the fiio e17) into it and hey presto. I have used this with a cheap usb sound card and it works so i imagine you can find a usb device that supports the output you need.

Micro HDMI + USB-OTG simultaneously?

I recently upgraded from an x10 to my shiny new ion and just ordered a micro hdmi cable to output pictures/video to my hdtv. I was wondering if it would be possible to also connect a USB OTG cable to the phone so that i could use a mouse or game controller through the USB port for playing games while outputting the video/audio to my hdtv?
Thanks,

I would like to know this as well, and it would be nice to have some recommendations for apps that can run different usb devices.
This info is from here
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/01/15/smartdock-for-xperia-ion-hdmi-multimedia-docking-station/
"The SmartDock is broadly similar to the LiveDock docking station, although it has one main difference – the inclusion of an HDMI port. This means that you can dock the Xperia ion into the SmartDock station, connect it via HDMI to your TV and look at photos, watch videos, listen to music or even connect a keyboard/mouse using the two onboard USB ports. It also, obviously, will charge your phone too."
If the dock can do it, should be good to go.

I got the DK20 dock for my ion. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't draw enough power from a PC's USB port to charge the phone. You need to use the plug that comes with the dock or the ion. (I use the ion's charger at work and the plug for my x10 at home.)
A neat upshot is that the USB ports on the back can also be used to charge other devices or host a Flash drive for more storage. ES File Explorer handled the additional storage flawlessly.
I haven't tried a controller by USB yet, but I got the Sixaxis app from the Android Market. Maybe this will make it easier to pair...

I tried it out yesterday.
It really works well. Was able to play "The World Of Goo", using the mouse and viewing it on my samsung 21" monitor which has an hdmi option.
The mouse works pretty well. If you have a usb hub you could even connect a usb keyboard, which works well too.
