Root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully this is the right section I got a replacement EVO the other day, I went to root it using revolutiounary. Everything worked to get A-off. I do not have internet at home so wasn't able to flash a recovery. O was wondering if there is a pcimg I can flash to get fully rooted and get a custom recovery? Or what I need to do any help would be great and thank u.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just reflash clockwork mod from rom manager and it should fix it.

It might be that but it depends what clockwork your using. There's been a few bugs with 5.xxxx that a simple reflash will do. Like me I lost recovery image and couldn't flash roms or boot into recovery but I just reflashed clockwork and it worked fine

Easiest method to root?

Reason why I ask is because, for any internet access to the internet on my computer I will be using hotspot on the phone I'm rooting.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
P.s. I have the T-Mobile version if it matters.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
This is what I did... go to the guide in general and look for how to root
Then download odin and recovery (whichever u prefer) then download In Developement Darkside data wipe and download any rom you want that has root.
1. Open odin
2. Put ur phone in DL mode (power+vol up and down+plug in usb)
Then place the recovery in the PDA slot
3. Then start
Then in CWM go flash the Darkside datawipe (it'll take a lil while)
Then flash your desired rom then reboot

If not... then it'll give you an option in the guid if you want to flash superuser via CWM hope this helps!

This will work with stock ics? Do I need a Rom? Can I do this method without?

Go here, download all of the files to your phone, transfer the drivers, odin, and the recovery.tar to your computer, then follow the steps outlined and root. It's what I did because we are on dial up Internet, but I i have data on my phone, so I just downloaded and transfered the files. Write down the directions on paper too, so you don't have to worry about missing a step.
Goodluck!

It looks like the only two su does are for GB, I have official ics for T-Mobile, with those work?

Yes they'll work

It's not installing the su file, keeps saying installation aborted. Restarted the phone and it said I had an update for superuser, updated it but all my root apps still won't work.

You've done the fix permissions right? And sometimes you need to attempt repeatedly. The last thing is, try using this version

Stuck in stock recovery

My phone is stuck in stock recovery. Help please. I was trying to flash a new rom. I have been rooted for a few month already btw. I flashed a kernal .zip file from recovery. Then my phone was off. I wont boot up just shows the galaxy Sii splash screen. I am now only able to accress the stock recovery. I'm not sure what to do from here. I have 1 rom on the root of my sdcard that I try flashing but it doesnt work.

First try to do a factory restore in recovery. If that doesn't make it boot, you need to find a CWM one click and use that to flash.

If you can get into download mode: Power it off completely. Then Power On + Volume Down, then Volume Up to 'confirm'
You can then try a PC Odin One-click Full Reset. Maybe start with this one to make sure all works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 Then hit up Rwilco12s repository [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252]and check out the others.
The directions for these are dead simple and very explicit. Take the time to read through them.
Make sure your phone is at least 60% charged before you start! You might want to power it off and plug it into the charger for a couple hours.
While it's charging download the one-click and launch it 'as adminstrator' and have it open waiting.
Then, if/after charging get it into download mode.
Also make sure you are in download mode before you plug in your phone to the computer.
If it shows up on any COM port your good to go. Start it and way till its done.
Good luck
Ok. I'll read through those links, but I cannot get into download mode.

I was using pacman Rom
I dont remember which rom I was wanting to flash. I flashed a kernal from recovery I believe CWM and this is what happened. I dont know if I was supposed to flash the rom at the same time. I thought I could flash the kernel then reboot and then boot back to recovery to flash the rom.

Try it on a different spare computer? Sometimes computers get crazy and don't recognize things when they're supposed to.

This computer is my spare. My main computer is an imac running just linux mint on it and I have another computer that has just ubuntu on it, so this is the only windows machine I have.
I restarted one more time and this time it recognized it! My phone is alive again. Thanks!
I was using agat recovery on the rom I had been using for about 2 months, I got a wild hair and decided to try another rom, that one replace my recovery with CWM and then when I tried to restore it didnt recognize my backup.

My bad mate, I didn't know 4ext was only intended for HTC. Try another recovery if you can, I heard TWRP is good!
I'm glad it worked! So is your phone atleast booting pass the Samsung Sii screen? Or still problems?
IDK if you're using a stable Rom or nightly roms, try to first flash your stock and see it from there?

Looks like he flashed a kernel and no rom and probably flashed an aosp kernel on a tw rom which wont boot, or vice versa. Or he flashed a kernel and then wiped the system which deletes the rom
I like to break stuff!
He likes to break stuff too, got to read op and double check before you flash. Speaking of flashing (not trying to hyjack thread) I need a safe recovery, on Garwyyn's stock rooted FK23 no recovery. Some what confused about what' s safe to use?
Any advise will be appreciated.
