Just got the SE4GT. Gotta say this is a Great Device!
One of the issues I have is that when I attach a picture to Handcent, and it is converted to MMS, the pic is rotated 90° counter clockwise.
But when I use the native message app, the attachment is in the proper orientation.
The other issue is that when I am going to take a picture, and the camera is in
Portrait mode, the settings are horizontal. If I enable auto rotate in the phone settings, the settings rotate properly. But I usually have auto rotate off. Do I always have to activate it in order to have the camera settings properly orientated?
Don't worry about it... I've tried to manually correct it and send the picture and it just ruins it for the receiver. Even though it looks fncked up it is actually perfectly fine. Get over it, the person that matters (the receiver) sees it just fine and you already knew what it looked like.
...it drove me nuts for a few weeks, but, whatever...it's fine. Just remember to tell yourself that the other person sees it normal.
Thanks.
Didn't realize the receiver gets it correctly.
I put an inquiry into Handcent the other day.
Funny it works correctly in the native message app.
Would appear to be a Handcent compatibility issue.
Hmm I receive them rotated. I am wondering what I can do to fix this as well.
new to the forum and I just wanted to add my issue. I posted an ad on Craiglist from my E4GT and the image was rotated when posted. So i tried to rotate the image and see what happens. Image was still rotated in the post even after clearing cache/cookies. wondering if there is a fix
steve
I was having the issue as posted, in addition to MMS messages Hanging forever, and never get sent.
I since made the SE4GT native Message app the default, and messages are being sent correctly regarding >
1) picture not getting rotated
2) MMS messages being sent without delay
Don't know if it's a Handcent Bug, or a user setting issue.
Nevertheless, the native app is working properly, even though I'd like to use Handcent, as I have on my Evo 4G.
I had to stop using handcent because of this and I have used it for almost 2 years straight. But the stock messanger is cool in landscape mode. Toss in Honey Glow v3 with that themed stock messanger and your not even worries about handcent ( well I do miss being able to send higher quality 1.2mb pica for sure )

If the devs start to mod the msg app like evo 3d ....they change it to 5 mb viper will probably do this soon

I have the inverse issue with Handcent. I have a Galaxy S2 running CM10 (10/29/12 nightly) and the stock messaging app rotates pictures taken in portrait mode by 90 degrees. I have found that Handcent correctly displays/sends the image (on my end and for the recipient).
Same issue with Go SMS

The problem is within the camera app and camera hardware. I suggest you use an application like vignette or pudding camera. They use different coding i guess? that allows the picture to taken in the orientation you take them. I will assume you must have auto rotate on for them to know though. Before this, all my pictures would be sent sideways.

My phone saves picture attachments as imagejpeg_2 and I have to change the file name every time so it doesn't overwrite the default imagejpeg_2 picture.
Is there anyway to disable this or make it so it will automatically saves as imagejpeg_3, imagejpeg_4, imagejpeg_5, etc. My friend has the regular Epic with the keyboard and his seems to save the pictures that way.
stock messaging app?
I couldn't tell you, I've never used it. Even with my first Android half a forever ago (Samsung Moment, *shudder*) it only took me 10 minutes to stumble upon Handcent SMS, and I've never used anything else...I should probably get the pay version. I love that goddamned app.
Though Go makes awesome stuff, so, I'm sure GoSMS is pretty good too...
...and doesn't the stock messaging app also compress and down-scale outbound pictures so much that they are nearly useless?

It sounds like "ChompSMS"
Yes, it's the stock messaging app.
+1 to this. im using the stock msg app and it always defaults to that label. anyway to fix that doesnt include going to a 3rd party app?
Yeah, I hate this problem it has to be a bug. Does anyone know if its been reported?
+1 happens to me also, default messaging app
Same here.. On my evo 3d, stock, or my preferred app: go sms pro, it names all my mms attachments as: imagejpeg_2. Jpg, or imagejpeg_2_3. Jpg etc etc
Originally thought this was a go sms issue, but does the same under. Stock messaging app.
So, my first android phone was a droidx..and I just upgraded to the GN on Verizon. I am just now starting to learn what things on my droidx were "extra" stuf with "blur" apparently, and not baked into android...since I have never had a vanilla android device to compare it with until now.
So my issue. Apparently Blur had something added that would autoconvert video that you record to an acceptable size/resolution to go through as an mms message. Example: I take a 45 second clip at 720p of something. When i go to send it MMS, droidx would say you have to cut the video down to 30 seconds (which it would let me pick with a slider), then it would auto-shrink it, then attach to MMS, and send though just fine.
Sooooo....apparently vanilla android doesn't have this capability baked in? If I do the same thing as above, it simpyl says the video is beyond the limit...can't find any option to ACTUALLY edit it to make it within the limit.
so it appears I would have to know ahead of time when I go to take a video that I will want to MMS it at some point, and make sure and take that video at the lowest video settings and manually make sure I keep it short???? Or am I missing something?
If this is correct, can anyone point to an app that can take the place of what my droidx did...basically let me convert existing video on the fly so I can send as MMS...without hurting the original video of course??
I looked around, tried handcent (I like the stock texting app and really don't want to replace it)...but same thing, it wants me to retake the video using crap settings...not send an existing one recorded at 720p+
I CAN'T be the only person that actually does MMS video a lot?? And please, no suggestions on dropbox, etc. etc. I have people that aren't going to deal with that...they want a damn MMS video fast and quick for certain projects and I can't believe Android 4.0 might still lack a feature that other phones have been able to do since 2008??
Thanks.
Try using Movie Studio in ICS to edit the video to a sendable size.

I actually did not know that app existed lol. However, no..doesn't appear to help. I selected the lowest resolution (something like 860X480) and "low" quality...and it still produced a file size of 2MB for a 26 second clip and I got a "video can not be added" message when i tried to MMS it.
Thanks though, nice to know that app is built in.
bump bump bump (10 character minimum lol)
easiest way is to go into messaging app and click attach at the top. choose capture video. this will give you a countdown (1 min) for your size restriction so you don't have to think about it. also, you might have to turn off wifi to get it to send properly.

Thank you...that at least tells me how to make sure i am capturing a video in the proper format for MMS.
This still leaves a GAPING hole. I have to decide before I video something whether i want quality...or MMS...something I never had to have a trade-off on with my droidx, or my wife's iphone for that matter!!! I want to be able to record something my daughter does in 1080p...and then MMS it, or part of it, to a family memeber....just like i did EVERY OTHER DAY on my droidx.
Really? millions of cell phone users and I am the only one that uses MMS video?
i didnt think it was possible to send 1080p mms. that would put a big strain on vz infrastructure loads. it was possibly converting your droidx videos for mms without explicitly saying so, but i could be mistaken.

It DEFINITELY was..that's my point, this phone doesn't and I need to find a way to do that.
Otherwise I would need to record everything twice...once in HD to store for keeping and once again in crap-mode to MMS to someone.
If my daughter is taking her first steps, do I record in **** mode so I can MMS it...or 1080p to keep and then it's stuck on my phone until i can physically go drive to another state to show her grandparents who can't even spell dropbox or youtube.
EDIT: I realized my first sentence wasn't clear. when I say it "definitely was", I am agreeing with the statement "maybe the droidx was converting the videos first"...and was NOT implying that my droidx was in fact SENDING 1080p MMS video.
I'm sure there are sending limitations with this as well but larger than the MMS limitations, but is attaching the video to an email instead of MMS'ing it an option? I know this doesn't answer your MMS question, but perhaps it's an alternative until you find something acceptable for your use.
Not saying you're wrong, but I would be really surprised if the DX was sending HD videos over MMS without some handwaving (ie, transcoding to smaller size/quality) being done. The limitation isn't time, it's size and regardless of what medium you use to record HD video with (be it an actual camera, DX or the gnex), HD video isn't small and subsequently isn't meant to be sent over MMS in all honesty.

Maybe I should clarify since it sounds like i have come across wrong. my droidx DID NOT send HD video in MMS...what it did was allow me to SHRINK ON THE FLY video i took at 720p so that I COULD send it MMS. Obviously the MMS message it sent was of standard MMS quality/size.
With the nexus I appear to have no option to transcode automatically to fit MMS limitations like I did on the Droidx....that is my issue. Even If I could find a 3rd party app that handled this seamlessly...which I can't find...I would be okay.
As far as emailing, I have a 30 second clip at 720p and it is 28 MB...so the email app says the clip is too big as well...again, with no option to shrink it for me (which I wouldn't expect since I never had that on my droidx either).
My friends Incredible performs the same as my droidx did, so clearly HTC/Motorola are either adding this in and it STILL isn't part of vanilla android, or it's broken in ICS...or it was removed between gingerbread and ICS (most likely being that the blur/sense/etc. add it)
Either way, I can't believe nobody has written an app to do this functionality, since I assume ROMS based off AOSP also don't have this....and the fact that cleary it is possible to do since phones with skins have been doing it for years.
Yeah this is an annoyance of mine as well, thanks for making this thread

Looks like you have been through many more android phones than me. has the nexus been the only one that doesn't seem to have this feature for you?
maybe your best bet is to link a dropbox folder between you and the other person (if you primarily get/send mms with one person, like a spouse) then upload your HD video and tell the other person to watch it. that's how my wife and i do HD video of our young kids.

As I recall, this was a MotoBlur function on the DroidX, and wasn't in AOSP ROMs... For the GNex, unfortunately, I don't see any free apps that will shrink video on the market... but if recording the video at SD (480) is still too large and it means that much to you, I guess you could buy one of the apps on the market that shrinks video (some specifically for MMS).
Examples:
Video Compressor
Video Message Shrinker
VidTrim Pro

THANK YOU!
This is what I was looking for, some options! I agree that this function appears to have been a motoblur add-in, but since that was my first android it REALLY spoiled me.
Everything Else, I love the unskinned GN MUCH better.
I will look at those apps, I don't care if I have to buy an app...just as long as it would allow me to accomplish this goal...since sending MMS video like this is almost a daily routine now at work, and at home.
Anyone else with some app options...pay or not..let me know. Looking for something as easy as possible...a 1-click sort of solution.

Yeah, it was a bump with words...
Um, I got it to work briefly on the G1 just after cupcake and on Cyanogenmod, but it would default to slideshows with audio when the people finally did receive the file (yet still show as a perfectly fine video on my end); then Google "fixed" the issue by removing the feature for an update or two, and I don't think auto-video-cropping for MMS ever was present, the G1 had only a 3MP camera- and it was the same "too large" story on my N1 and beyond. I haven't had it able to send since, although I never really tried it with my Atrix (which should have had the Blur functionality). I will keep searching for a usable app though...

I downloaded video trim pro, and it looks like it could accomplish this, but during the transcoding it just stops before 100% and leaves you with a corrupt file.
The developer has a comment in there saying that the operating system might close the app for using too many resources, I have emailed him to see if there is a way to get around that...cause if so it looks like this is the best option I will have.

I don't do video chatting though. It is when I switch the camera from the back one to the front one that I experience lagginess.

Yeah I think you're right. I just tested this out on my sister's Galaxy S 4G, and although they're completely different phones, I think the "lagginess" is just a limitation of the camera and not a defect. I implied in my OP that I had a defect for my FFC, but in reality, I think it's just made that way. It snaps photos fine so I can live with it.
Funny thing is, my old phone, an EVO 3D, didn't have nearly as much stutter or lag on the front facing cam. Oh well. Heh.
I'm not too distrubed by the lag....but I have another problem. Whenever I take a picture using the front camera. It takes it fine, but then instantly mirrors it (Right -> Left). So if someone was standing behind me on the right in the pic, when I capture it, it shows it fine for a second but then reverses it as soon as it goes to the little gallery icon on the bottom left. So tthen the guy looks like hes standing on the left. Any fix for this?
I found this annoying too! But then I discovered all I had to do was flip it in the Samsung photo editor app. Just click the share button and share with photo editor. The second arrow on the top shows rotation options and it looks perfect.

Are you talking about in the market? If you changed your DPI then you will have issues with market capability. As far as updating an app from a website, never heard of it.
I haven't been able to send a picture message at all.
I've tried on my OMGB install with no success using stock messenger and handcent
I also tried on Stock+ with no avail.
On both roms i am running the ext4 mod with latest incredikernl/tiny.
I am using Quickpic instead of the stock galleries, could that be the issue?

no luck there. i even switched to inc-deck, a cm7 rom wthout it working.
Update:
So it seems that its my gf's phone that isn't receiving my picture messages. I sent one to my mom's phone who has a stock incredible 2.3.4 and her phone received it.
My mom sent one to my gf earlier and she received it fine.
My guess now is, is my phone not converting mms appropriately? im on inc-deck 1.3
Did you compare your settings with your mom to see if that matches up? Maybe she has the MegaPixel set at a lower resolution i.e. do you have yours set to 8mp whereas your mom has it set to 5mp? It very well could be the size of the photo itself due to the resolution.
Edit: also, if you have a few other friends with different phones successfully receive your pictures then that helps you figure out what settings you need to configure.

In that case, as long as you can receive pics from your girl then you are doing what any smart person in a relationship is doing....sacrifice lol
Currently most Mms.apk's have a max size of 1MB. Anything over that gets insanely compressed as you all know. The stock one is even worse.
I'm thinking of doing one with a max size of 2 or 3MB since that's around the size of most of our pictures. Hopefully I can take even more slack off the compression (no promises on that one yet, haven't found it's hiding spot).
Anyone interested? I'm going to do it anyway just figured I'd see the interest level here before making a new thread for it. Also, any other ideas/suggestions are welcome.
Id be interested. Im tired of having to run a different rom just to get some features someone could mod.
Handcent has the option to increase the size limit to 5mb which is what i use and it works great. It says Evo only but it works fine on my phone been using it for a long time now. But if you can get the stock messing app to that limit i will use it. Handcent sends portrait photos sideways bcuz of samsungs crappy way of determining orientation. When sending portrait photos is the only time i send thru stock app cuz it sends correctly but quality is destroyed

Well I'll be starting the work and testing on it after this weekend. Yes, Handcent is nice but as stated it can be spotty and not work sometimes. I don't think the max size needs to be at 5MB, 3MB should be enough but I don't see any harm in setting it a 5 just in case.

Ah ok. I think i had that issue when a update came out. I fixed it by messing with an option that disabled the stock messenger. Once i enabled it back the problem went away instantly. I stick with handcent bcuz the stock app is ugly and the horrible compression it does. Maybe OP can give the stock app a make over? Lol
