Should I get SGII epic 4G Touch or Motorola Photon? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was very interested in what the Motorola photon till the guy at Sprint HIGHLY reccomended the SGII Epic 4G Touch. Told me about all the features of guild phone which caught my attention. I also watched a 14 min vid from wirefly smackdown on the photon vs epic 4G touch.
One thing I was concerned about was the resolution being lower. Also rather like the kickstand idea from the EVO, but saw there was cases that have kickstands for the epic 4G touch. I'm asking from people who have owned the phone for a while, is it a good choice to get or should I stick to getting the photon?

Best phone I've had. The only rant is the LoS every now and then. I prefer the smaller resolution because it's just easier. Bigger icons are better (at least for myself).
I messed with the Photon and it's a nice phone, but something that kept me far away from it was the lack of development.

I came from a Motorola atrix from att and I can say I missed Samsung. Phonton isn't a good the ept4g screen is amazing. Battery is OK better stuff is yet to come. Join us get the Epic 4g touch

Like you, I considered both and haven't regretted my decision to go with the ET4G. The screen is amazing. The phone is faster than anything I've used. I doubt you'll regret it.

Had the Photon for a month and have had the Epic 4G Touch for a month. While the Photon is an excellent phone it has serious issues with random rebooting and no audio on calls. It seems for for unexplained reasons the software just goes haywire and you have to do a battery pull. Some Best Buys reported 100% return rate when the phone first came out due to issue with no audio and rebooting. The radio is very strong, much better than the Sammy. The UI is not very good, you will need to switch to LauncherPro to make it acceptable. Thicker and heavier that the Sammy. Neither are great with the battery due to the nature of Android. As for the Epic 4 G Touch the radio is weaker. While people report loss of signal I have never had it. Very slim and lighter. Great all around phone with no issues on the calls. Like everything about it.
My suggestion would be the Epic 4 G Touch.

The SGS2 is a beast! I think you can't go wrong with either phone but I would say Sammy all the way. The screen blows away the qhd display of the EVO 3d I owned so I wouldn't be concerned about the resolution.
I know the a lot of people also like the Photon but I have not used it nor have any intention of even looking at it.

When it comes to tv and computer monitors I am an HD snob. I simply want the highest screen resolutions. Naturally I shopped around for a new phone using the same mindset. That was until I experienced the Super Amoled Plus screen. I finally realized how much of an impact contrast ratio is to the clarity of the screen. Deep blacks make every color on the screen pop. I watch Netflix on my phone in bed and I am blown away at the quality of the picture.
So in my opinion if you are trying to make resolution of the screen your deal breaker, you should go and spend some time with both phones and see for yourself.
Plus our phone simply have the fastest processor on the market. Without hardware acceleration my phone still don't experience any lag. Now with ICS coming out and hardware acceleration on just imagine how much more smoother our phone will be.

I'm an IT Manager for my company, our help desk gets more calls about Motorola Droids then anything else. I will never own a Motorola Android. I will admit the new Razor is tempting. For myself, I like Android but I think it is a little to complicated for the average corporate user. They just want something quick, easy and that works.
FYI, we get the least amount of calls over Iphones. I'm tempted to make the Iphone our officially supported phone. I don't think I want to get into Android or WP7 polices.

What is your company's officially supported phone now?

My answer to the question, plus my Android history for some perspective.
I had the Photon briefly, exchanged for the Epic4GT and would never go back to the Photon.
-First Android was Sprint Hero. Was almost immediately outdated, but I liked it.
-This Aug was time for upgrade, Photon had just come out, didnt like how it looked, got the EVO4G. Really liked it compared to the outdated Hero, but the thing was HUGE, heavy, and battery didn't last long. The camera was 100000x better than the Hero.
-2 weeks later, after reading a couple reviews, (and hating the bulk of the EVO), exchanged it for the Photon. Immediately hated it. Hated the display - "artificial" is the only word I can think to describe it. The camera is horrible - about the same as my original Hero. I also really hated the UI.
Then the GSII was announced for Sprint. I held onto the Photon - hating every second of it - and the very last day of my 30day return policy was the drop day for the E4GT. Got it. LOVE it.
The size is perfect. Biggest screen out there (kinda), but the phone doesn't feel too big. It's not a BRICK like the EVO. It's thin and light. And the display size is great. Odd looking at a tiny iPhone display after this. Display quality is amazing. The camera is at the top - rating about even or better than the best out there. Battery has great life.
Not only is the E4GT the best phone at SPRINT right now, it's hard to beat it anywhere. For now. That all changes quick. But if you need to buy a phone right now, and you want the best from Sprint the Epic4GT is it.
(Sorry for a long first post, but this is a topic I just lived through.)

Wow thank you for all the information you gave, that is def a deal breaker for me
Also to everyone else who posted, thank you all for the replies, I'm def going for the epic 4g touch now. Just need to find a decent case, which, doesn't happen till Nov from what i hear.

I'm still on the fence about getting the ET4G. I keep reading about LOS this and poor wi-fi signal that. Coming from an OG Epic some here can understand my apprehension, I would like to see if an update by the end of the year will come through. My ultimate plan is to pick one up through Craigslist just to hold on to my upgrade because I'm holding on to hope that Sprint gets the Nexus early next year.

I have an Epic 4G Touch that has not been rooted yet and I am yet to get an los on it. No issues with wifi or anything else for that matter.
Can keep 4G on all day while at work with about 1.5 hours of on screen time after 9 hours and come home with over 50% battery left. Compared to the EVO 4g and 3d, that is pretty damn impressive!

No prob - hope it helped. As for the case, I have the Carbon Fiber texture Kickstand Cover from Sprint, and I think it's great. I've never liked hard cases before this - always too much bulk. I've always gotten silicone cases, which I have liked a lot for drop protection, but they gather a lot of dust. This case adds minimal bulk and looks great. People cant believe how small/thin the phone is, and that's before they realize it's in a case. Take it out and they are even more amazed. Took pics, will post soon.

I've read so much about this, but haven't experienced either problem. I was even going to jump on board the Sprint refund/credit bandwagon, just because I'm sure I could get away with it, but I haven't had the problem, so I'm not going to. I had had about 4 random reboots in the month I've had it, but it hasn't been a problem. (I just heard it rebooting in the other room.)

The reboot could be caused by an app you are running. Are you running Juicy Defender or something like that? I know that has been an app that causes reboots.

I've had mine for about a week now (came from and EVO) I have no complaints whats so ever........... Your mileage may vary.......
Its a good device coming from the Evo. Its has a few issues like the Loss of service, but I did experience that until I rooted the device so I dont blame it on the phone.
The one problem that I do have is that it wont play most games for more than 10 to 15 minutes. But I use it for reading more than anything else and sprint and samsung are suppose to be releasing a patch next month.
I would say stop calling it the SGS2 (which, I know, it is) and get used to ET4G. If for nothing else than to know that if something is labeled SGS2 that you should. not. flash. it.
As far as QWERTY goes? Pffft. I was so worried when I got my Evo that I was going to miss QWERTY. I didn't have the Hero long enough to get used to it, then I got the Moment and got used to it (that keyboard sucked anway)....but the transition took, oh, a week or two. That was a year and a half ago and I've never regretted ditching the real keyboard. There are hundreds of 'em. Find one you like. I go back and forth between Swype and SwiftkeyX and can haul major ass on both....especially Swype. SwiftKeyX is totally worth whatever it costs. If you let it read your texts, emails and Facebook posts it's prediction is simply amazing. You barely even have to try being precise.
This phone is the epic now... If you like your keyboard, turn the phone landscape, then the keys r bigger than my gfs physical keys on the og epic

I got it last Tuesday and love the phone and size. Im using the "Go Launcher" and LOVE IT, amazing how easily it is to make your beautiful looking and functional. The only problem Im having is LOS. And battery life is not that good either but , what can you expect from a dual Core phone with a big ass screen. You can tweak it with SetCpu. But Im still trying to find the best configuration so i can have a optimal battery life.
But i must say the phone is amazing and also it also lets you uninstall a lot of the preloaded apps without rooting, something other phones and carriers wont permit.

I'll be switching from the Moment and lack of a physical keyboard was also something I was wondering about. Hence why I sub'd to this thread.. I wanna see what y'all have to say.

If you are coming from the Moment you will love this device. I had the moment for 6 months but I had to get rid of it because I hated it. I went to the and loved that until my charger port broke. Got this as a replacement. This is better than the Evo, considering the screen is excellent. Also it is so much lighter and thinner than the Evo and Touchwiz is not as bad as people make it out to be.
The only problem with it that I have had is the sound bug which causes some games to just quit.

Here's a little devil's advocate.
I bought the ET4G on a whim after seeing it on Craigslist for an attractive price. After using it for a week, it's going back on Craigslist and I am using my OG Epic again w/ the new Gingerbread release (and physical keyboard fixes!).
While the ET4G certainly offers a snappier Android experience and a better camera than the OG Epic, I didn't find the boost in speed or extra screen real estate to be worth the $325 I paid for the device. I think the only speed boost worth writing home about was the speed of the ET4G's stock browser. Lastly, the audio quality of SGSII is inferior to SGSI and in all honesty not worthy of a high end smartphone - this was the deal breaker for me.
Considering that you already have the OG Epic, I'd wait until the middle of next year so you can get a killer future-proof 720p LTE phone at a fully discounted price. All that said, the ET4G is still a great device!

That's one reason I haven't taken the plunge (though I tried once, and the guy at the store said he couldn't mess with my plan). When I played with it at the store, it wouldn't rotate. Meanwhile, some of the apps (especially the camera app) would go landscape and not go back. Anyone else have that problem?

The E4GT is Hands Down the Best Built Phone I have Used!!!

So this has been the first Samsung smart phone I have owned since I have been using smart phones. I started way back with the PPC-6600 and moved up the line with each additional model by HTC. I was an HTC fan boy and never even looked at another manufacturer.
All I would read about on these forums is how crappy Samsung phones are built and they are junk. People would swear by HTC's build. Well after using the SGS2 for almost 2 months now, I have to say this is the best built phone I have ever used. Everything has just been perfect!
I love when people make the claim that is feels cheap. Even if it feels cheap, it is still built like a monster! HTC phones might feel like an army tank but along with that army tank comes crooked screens, bad power buttons, dust inside the screen, bad pixels, cracks on the casing, terrible battery doors that you need to pry off with chisel, light leakage and I am sure the list goes on and on and on...
Since the release of the E4GT, there are been barely any posts about hardware problems on the phone. How could anyone make the claim it is cheaply made? If you visit the EVO 3D forums, you will still see that claim all over the place still.
Well at least us smart ones are enjoying the best cheaply made Sprint phone without any problems while HTC owners are using their army tank of a phone with a ton of hardware defects.
Who is laughing now!
For sure dude. I was a hardcore HTC fanboy but Sammy has more than won me over with this phone. It is nothing short of amazing.

Great phone but definitely not the best built.
Take a look at the razr, photon, bionic, iPhone, evo, etc.
With that being said I do prefer the light weight over build quality, as its still solid.
Drawbacks of plastic chassis are easily noticed: creaky, easy to crack, easy to scratch (everything scratches plastic). Durable enough for my needs, but if you've used other phones you wouldn't say this is the best built.

I don't know about that.....Drop an iPhone and then drop a E4GT and see who looks better in the end...Oh wait, let me find that for you...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elKxgsrJFhw
I have read a ton of posts from people that have cracked the back glass on their iPhone but I have yet to read anyone cracking their E4GT. So what are you basing that on? I have also yet to hear my phone creak or see anyone complaining about that.
I am beginning to think people just make stuff up and do not base it on anything except what they hear from other people. I bet you a lot of people that claim Samsung phones are cheap and crap have never even owned one.
As an HTC owner and now a Samsung owner, I must say that HTC has a lot to learn when it comes to build quality. I used to believe everything I read as well and thought HTC knew how to build a phone. I would always say to myself all these issues and people still think it is great. I just figured other manufacturer's must be even worse. How wrong I was...
Htc's quality has gotten better over the years. I went through a couple of Moguls and Vogues before I got one that worked well and didn't look slapped together. I really loved my Vogue with Donut on it. The quality of my evo was pretty good but it just seemed too heavy and thick. For me the Droid Incredible was the best phone I ever owned, I liked it every bit as much as the e4gt. My only complaint is the stepped back and small battery (fixed by using the Evo battery).
I am now spoiled by big screens. I just have a tough time reading on the small screens and the retina display just does not help.
The e4gt does feel like cheap plastic to me, I'm a sucker for soft touch coatings but I really like the weight and the thinness of it. Aside from the occasional LOS it is quality phone. I agree that it is a better built phone then any that I have owned in the past. I have not played with the latest crop of Htc phones.
I agree. I dropped my phone down 2 rows of stairs. I got one small scratch on the bezel. My evo would have shattered. My Droid x would have disintegrated. I don't understand how plastic feels cheap. The phone is solid all around and proves it.
I agreste, this is definitely the best phone out! I was watching the galaxy nexus review on pocketnow.com and how he said that the sgs2 is still faster. Samsung hit the nail on this one.
The plastic does scratch no matter what you do lol, I've had the protector case (gel one, not hard palstic) and there are little scratches all up and down the sides though I clean it daily....

I definitely have to agree. Aside from the little quirks here and there this phone is amazing. My old Evo felt like if I so much as looked at it the wrong way it would crumble apart and compared to my ancient Touch Pro, the Sammy feels indestructible.
I love this phone, but build quality vs impact durability are a little different.

Who cares about build quality and materials used if you can't use the phone?

That would be software. Has nothing to do with the physical build of the phone.
Plus I do not get LOS, and if you do switch to stock pulled kernel it almost becomes non existent for people who were getting it.

I have to agree with nooomoto tho...yes the phone has awesome hardware in many categories,, but where it really really counts, this thing sucks..what am I talking about ??
Radio.....
I love this phone on wifi,, soon as I leave my house, I'm worried about reception and data speeds.forget about the los, how about painfully slow 3g AND 4g, even in the los angeles area.
it will be interesting to see, if the "Alleged" LOS fix, coming in December, fixes LOS, what will the whiners here have to complain about instead of that???
This phone is without doubt the best smartphone on the market now...
Sprint network sucks, and, since they are pretty much the cheaper full line provider out there, the old adage "you get what you pay for" is what you deal with when you have them as your provider, but, that aside, nothing comes close to this phone, as of right now..And, I have had phones/smartphones since 1986, so I feel pretty qualified to make these kinds of observations...
Camera - That right there makes this the best phone i have ever used. My OG Evo's phone camera was terrible!! But I also agree, LOS included - my favorite phone of all time.

thats very true; my wife takes tons of pics with her E3D, and she is always pissed at me, when I take the same pic with my sammy phone, and how much superior my picture is to hers!
It truly is on par if not better with the iphone which is a true accomplishment as that was one of their finer points. Just check out this thread on your computer if you doubt the camera

Data speeds have nothing to do with your phone! Sprint's network sucks right now no matter what phone you are using!!! Why don't people get that?
One day on my phone I got 14mbs on 4G. The next day I got 4mbs. Do you think my phone had a different radio in it the first day. There is so much that plays into your data speeds and the tower congestion.
Why do I get the same speeds on my Airave every single day of around 1.5mbs over 3G but when I go somewhere else I pull anywhere from 25kbs - 1mbs over 3g? Do you think I change out my radio in my house for better speeds.
When I had the EVO 3D I was pulling a constant speed of 50kbs over 3G by my job. Does HTC make ****ty radio's as well? People need to stop confusing their crappy data speeds for a bad Samsung Radio. There is nothing wrong with the radio in the E4GT. It behaves like every other Sprint phone right now over their ****ty network!
Until they prove otherwise, I am going to give sprint the benefit of the doubt. I saw what their plan was for network vision and I think they potentially could be ahead of the curve in 2012/13. Doesn't help us now, since i believe they skipped Rev B which would have been better speeds but I am ok with that if they are first to complete their LTE network. But it appears that clearwire is using all the tricks and political juice to slow down Sprint's LTE partner.
Idk what you guys are talking about with LOS, I've never got one. This is built great. Yes plastic do scratch easily but it do not shatter like iPhone 4 4s, i drop this down a flight of stairs, the worse that happen was my music being paused. Best built phone, hardware and software wise hands down. LOS who??? Never got one.
If HTC made this phone with the same specs, hardware and dimensions it would be the ULTIMATE phone, like the phone of the gods.
And you can't deny the fact that LOS and the sou d bug would have been fixed a week or so after launch.

Would you buy Epic Touch again now?

I just became eligible for an upgrade as a Sprint Premier Gold customer - my last one before the program ends in December. I have been thinking about buying an Epic 4G Touch for a while, and am wondering if those of you who got them early on are still happy with your purchase.
As far as I can tell, there is not any Sprint android phone on the horizon that looks any better, and I am not willing to wait until March to upgrade. Also, if it makes any difference I am coming from the OG Epic, which finally seems to be working well thanks to the GB update and the work of our great developers here at XDA.
So, any thoughts? Would you buy the E4GT again? Anything phones coming out soon that you would wait for? Thanks for any input...
If I could have a do over, I would wait until they fixed the LOS issue. Other than that, I love the phone and think it's the best option on Sprint currently (minus the LOS issue of course).
Without a doubt.

Results have varried, but the EG31 modem update fixed the LOS issue for me. Haven't had one since...
I bought mine on launch day, and still very happy with my purchase. I would definitely buy it again.

I did come from the original Epic 4G. I was a lil worried about not having the physical keyboard because I text a lot, but surprisingly it hasn't been a problem. I found that I was using the onscreen keyboard on my OG Epic a lot anyway, and with the added screen real estate, it only made it easier. I have adjusted quite well to all touchscreen.
Yes! Honestly, this phone never fails to amaze me. From how sharp and crisp the screen is, to the speed/raw power as the device as a whole, to the sexyness of the phone, even when the screen is off.
Remember, you will have 14 days to return/switch to another phone.
Its the best out now on any carrier besides the att variant.
The next phone that will be a major step up probably won't be out until next April/may at the earliest (on sprint at least). So go for it.
It will get the ice cream sandwich update so its future proof I'd say, I wouldn't wait on the nexus because by time that comes to sprint, if it does, it will be short lived like the nexus s on sprint (dual cores came to sprint a month later)

I would definatelly buy one again. It is sweet phone. No regrets here.

The phone, as a device, is great. The phone, as a phone, sucks a big fat one. The antenna design and/or radio firmware is causing me to regret buying this device.
Not only is there a LoS issue as others have pointed out, but signal quality itself is atrocious. In general, CDMA is meant to be able to operate at very low signal quality. However, when this phone gets into low signal strength, it chops up my audio send/receive. Moreover, the data speed I get is crap. YMMV.
As I stated earlier, the phone, as a device, is great. It has a beautiful screen, the camera is pretty awesome, and it rarely slows down when using it regularly.
I agree with most of what fadeaway said. I wouldn't buy. Wait for a LTE handset to land unless you plan on buying another phone in 6 months. Here's what I posted on another thread:
I just got mine last week, and LOVE it, running Calk's ROM + ICS theme and this phone just looks so cool, the screen is perfect for web page reading, and watching YouTube videos look amazing, and the WiFi signal for me is the best I have ever had, upstairs in bedrooms I still get good WiFi signal from the Basement office, no other phone held connection up on the 2nd floor. GPS is rock solid and locks on instant. Yes I have had two LOS's so far in one week, but no big deal, just restart the phone and it's gone, the phone restarts so fast. And that happened at my Mom's house, a very poor Sprint area, with no bars ever.
I am coming from the Nexus-S 4G which was feeling small to me, and before that my EVO 4G which I loved for a year. The Epic Touch 4G gives me that same wow factor I had when the EVO first came out last year. Oh yeah, the sound volume is great, very loud playing videos, where as my Nexus could barely be heard at full volume, and this is even louder than my EVO 4G, which was good.
There won't be a significantly better phone out until Summer, most likely the EVO-Three and Galaxy S3. And I can't wait till there is a solid stable Android 4.0 ICS ROM out for this phone, then holy cow, this thing will destroy anything for a long time.

Yeah, that is a great point. I think I am going to call Best Buy and see if they will match Amazon's $149 price for the phone. If so, I may get it tonight...
The hardware is excellent but the phone doesn't get much support, I would have waited if I was to do it all over again. HTC phones get lots of supports, which I would have waited for. I had the ppc6700, mogul, hero, and eve.
One last thing, I thought the EVO 4G when it first released last year was an amazing device, it just blew me away, the big screen, build quality, tons of custom ROM's, just an awesome smartphone for last year.
I feel the Epic Touch 4G, is the true successor and best next gen device for Sprint.
ehh
I think my biggest problem with the phone is that it feels so unpolished, in terms of all the little issues I keep running into it. Granted, LoS only happened to me after a root, but, it was an annoying issue for many other people. The GPS lock is just absolute crap, and the fact that apps keep crashing because of that sound glitch is just plain annoying. I couldn't even finish PvZ because of it...
Honestly, it feels like Sprint and Samsung were trying to sell this phone quick and leave it to dry while they were working on their other new offerings (iphone4s for Sprint, and the Galaxy Nexus for Samsung). Feels very half assed...
Given a second shot, I think I'd have to really reconsider...
I'm on the EG30 modem with ROOT+CWM5 applied. Stock ROM and kernel other then that.
I've only had LOS one time and that was when I was in a basement where there simply was no signal. No Sprint, nothing to roam to either.
When I came out of the basement and was back in an area I knew for a fact should have had full Sprint bars, my phone showed nothing. Said I had no service. I had to reboot to which fixed it.
First and only time.
I love my new Samsung Epic Touch 4G.
I'm not sure that it's really much better then my EVO 4G was either though. My EVO was tweaked VERY nicely and I was getting 30~35 hours of battery life on MikG ROM with a little SetCPU tweaking. I like the slim profile of the Epic Touch 4G though, sucker is THIN and seems to be better built then my EVO 4G.
That said, I really took a hard look at the Apple iPhone 4S when I was shopping.
I almost picked up the 4S simply because I work for a school system that is loaded with iPhones, iPads and Macbooks.
I'm pretty much the only person in my department (technology dept) that uses an Android. I sorta want to get in line with what the district runs. The ONLY reason didn't get the 4S was the size of the screen. If it would have been 4~4.5 inches, I would have gotten one. If the iPhone 5 has a bigger screen, I might consider that at upgrade time. Personally I think both series, Android and iOS have good things to offer.
Anyway, back to the original question yes I would buy the Epic Touch 4G again today.

[Q] Any former Evo 3D users here?

I've noticed a lot of familiar faces around here, how many people here came from the Evo 3D? I used to think once the Evo got AOSP the phone would work better. I wish I had waited for this phone with my upgrade! I bought this on Ebay, I just couldn't take the lag anymore. It's such a night and day difference. Are you other folks satisfied with the switch?
Hell yes this phone is night and day better than evo3d.... There is no looking back from here

Glad I made the move. Even sold back my EVO3D with a broken screen to Sprint for $125 and bought the 4G Touch on Amazon for $79. Win win! If I could only access the 3D images and vids women volunteered to test for me...
Lol I trade my 3d straight across for this last weekend. It has been the best trade ever. I had the vibrant on tmo so its like coming home with this phone and using Odin.

ya I have both and love this phone without a doubt. I like how in the htc forums they call this phone junk. it runs circles around that phone. I love the screen. I havent had one build quality problem since day one. even tho they said I would. i did however have multiple issues with the 3d over a couple of them. also as far as samsung being shady with updates. not for this phone! this is getting Ice cream sandwich very soon. I laugh everytime I see one of those threads. they don't realize how easywe have it over here where there is no need for a site like htcdev.com to unlock a bootloader like the evo 3d needs. welcome to the green side

I was biased towards Samsung and was half expecting non stop problems and deal with the LOS and the soundpool bug for the next six months or more, and forget about ICS...maybe in 2014.
Samsung proved me wrong on all accounts.
Ya, I am glad I switched. I thought HTC was so cool. It was like thinking a Geo Storm was cool back in 1996. Ya, it ain't sh!t compared to my Audi turbo with panoramic sunroof. You would think the people at Sprint would have said, hey, don't buy the 3d. It is a POS. I looked at the photon but I couldn't get use to that pixel thing going on with the screen
I got the Evo 3D on launch day...in November, this phone came up for a penny on Amazon, and I had to go for it. When it came in, I was shocked at how much smoother and faster it was than the Evo.
I'm definitely glad that I made the switch.
Yes, sold my 3vo.
had the 3d sold it and now I am rocking this beauty!!
I love this phone I just wish it had a better build, I'm not a fan of Samsung plastic. Other than taht it blows the 3d out the water. I still have my 3d because I gave it my sister but still love flashing Roms on it :b.
I liked my 3d. I just like this phone more. Coming from an og evo, I was bummed with the slightly smaller screen, weaker speaker and camera.
Gps seems better on 3vo but that is it. Literally. This thing could run the entire evo in a widget.

Photon VS Epic..rant

So, in the summer I'm going to be traveling to Europe and need a World phone. So I decided to get a decent smart phone, none of that black berry crap.
Anyways, after buying a Moto XPRT and Sprint giving me the shaft and not allowing me to activate it due to being on SERO, I bought another phone, the Photon.
The device is built like a Rock and has some nice feature, especially the kick stand. Honestly, it feels good in the hands (that's what she said) and performs decently.
But going to the Photon from the Epic, there is no comparison. The epic is much faster, feels solid without the bulk and is just plain sexier.
Also, the photon has a really disorganized support. Our forums for the Epic are so well maintained and have active support. Granted, the photon is probably an older device.
It took me about 2 hours to unlock, root and install CWM on it. Not only is it a hassle, but all the links were broken! I wanted to install a ROM and all of the links were pointed to Multiupload which seems to be gone.
Anyways, I just wanted to post this because I can't wait to go back to my Epic after I make sure this phone will work in Europe.
Any others out there try the Photon too?
If you want to mod it I believe shabby still has his holylivingfuck.com links up
The photon was much solid and with motorola holding back the bootloader it really held a solid device back. The devs are great and there was no sort of bs negativity on the forums. It was like everyone there was a family and chill as F not talking down to each other....

Exactly there is no point but its cool to have anyways
I had the Photon before I got my GS2. The Photon has a much better radio and pulls a mu h better signal even in weak coverage areas. This is fact. The ONLY reason i returned the Photon was because I couldnt stand the grainy pentile display. It does conserve battery but for me the jaggedness of fonts and icons, videos, etc was just too noticable and it really bugged me a lot. I had no other complaints about the Photon other than the lack of decent stock motorola widgets.
For traveling and the need for a good solid signal, the Photon is your best option. Believe me the motorola radio in the Photon rocks. Thats pretty important when travelling. This is my ad ice.

That's exactly what Motorola wants. That phone had so much potential, such a waste of a good device.
I loved my MoPho and would still be using it if I didn't brick it when trying to unlokc the bootloader. Once bricked, I freaked out and got the GS2 with my upgrade.....LOL
The MoPho was very solid and had great reception. My 4G was constant all day and I loved it!!
I tried unlocking the bootloader, I freaked out and didn't go through with it. At the time there were no ROMs so there really wasn't any real need to.

Exactly. No poi.t in risking your phone when there's no custom ROMS and development is basically at a stand still becausr of the locked boot loader. That was the other reason I moved on from the Photon. Stoll its a solid device was an excellent radio. Dont underestimate the Photon's radio, it smokes my GS2 all day everyday!
Unlocking the bootloader was really easy, to be honest. They instructions are scary, but I was in a "I don't give a $&*@" mode.
I messed something up when I tried to unlock the bootloader and wasn't able to revive my MoPho for a day or two. I had to search all over these forums to find a solution to an issue I was having while going through the revive process.
