Hello,
I'm using the MIUI-XJ ROM, with D2EXT. Unfortunately, I use a crappy class 2 micro SD card, and it makes the ROM and apps laggy as hell. So i've got 2 questions :
- First, how can I transfer an app from the sd card, so D2EXT, to internal memory, so it uses the few MBs free I have, and avoid lagging ? (Especially for homes such as SPB Shell... It makes the whole phone lag)
- I plan to buy a class 10 micro sd card. Are the SDHC a good solution ? Does it work with D2EXT ? When I'll have it, how can I transfer everything from the old card to the new one without losing anything ? Would a simple copy/cut work ? Or do I have to use backup apps such as the ROM Manager or TItanium Backup ?
Concerning the partitions, would I have to partition the new sd card ? What partitions ?
That's a lot of questions, sorry...
Thanks.
Firstly, you cant.
Secondly, SDHC just means "Secure Digital High Capacity". Yes Data2ext will work on this.
The best way to "Upgrade" is to take a nandroid backup, partition the new card, copy all the data from the FAT32 partition to the new FAT32 partition (including hidden files such as ".android_secure" and nandroid restore. Upgrade should be seamless.

Thanks for this quick answer. For the SDHC, I asked because when flashing the Wii, some memory cards (SDHC ones) aren't compatible, and I got ****ed by that. Don't want to spend around 50-60€ for nothing
Ok, so I'll do that, just have to find how I partitionned it first... Thanks a lot.

Hey guys,
i will buy me a new bigger sd card for my desire (currently im using the 4gb sdhc card wich was included).
no i got two tiny questions:
1) my 4gb is a goldcard. are any problems known if i use the goldcard utility on the new card? e.g. the desire remembers only the "first" one?
2) what about my ext. partition? wich is the easiest way to "plug'n'play" the new card? i have no experience with ext partitions on windows systems. is it enough to install a ext driver to read it and just simple copy/paste the files? or should i use a existing nandroid backup after creating a ext partition on the new card?
thx for the answers!
regards,
sualfred

1) No, there SHOULD not be any problem...
2) You will not be creating an EXT partition on the whole SDCARD... The EXT(2/3/4) space is meant for APP2SD - meaning your programs will be installed there (if you have a ROM supporting this). The rest of your SDCARD will/should be a normal FAT32 !

windows cannot read the ext file system, if you want to copy and paste your files like that you will have to use a linux live cd
I have a lot of apps stored on my sd card via app2sd. If I rip the currently installed card to a folder then copy the files to the root of the new card and plug it in will it work without problem, or will I lose all of my app2sd apps? Thanks for clarifying.

Are you using froyo native Apps2sd or EXT3?
I guess it doesn't really matter. However, I only have experience with EXT3 (darktremor) and moving to another SD card worked fine for me. I copied the ext3 partition over to the new card (after partitioning it of course) and it worked fine.

I am using the app2sd that stores all of the apps in a file rather than a second partition because I heard partitioning sdhc cards can lead to unforeseen consequences.
Hello.
I have bought a new SD Card (kingston 16gb Class4).
I had a lot of problems with ext3 make. By Gparted it have errors.
I have readed this topic.
Can I repair my SD Card?
Sry for my english.
How are you connecting the card? Via a card reader or still in the phone? If it's still in the phone make sure you are in recovery and not booted in to android.
I made it by card reader. Formatting and partitioning by recovery - errors.
Have you tried erasing all the partitions and creating them again? What happens if you click the 'Repair' button?
I've always done my partitioning with my card in the phone, connected to my PC while in recovery and used Minitool Partition Wizard for Windows (this software was suggested in a thread I read a while ago) and never had any problems.
There is also the possibility of the card having a hardware problem, so you might need to swap it under warranty.
yes, first i have erased all partitions (deleted)
On repair ext - error, fat32 works fine.
first make an extended partition for your fat32 and inside that a primary fat32.
The unallocated space make it ext3

shouldn't both partitions be primary (no extended ones)?
erase everything 1st keep it unformatted then create fat32 primary then ext primary (optional linuxs swap) this is what i have done when installed miui rom data2ext
i suggest you dont use that card reader try through the cell....
I have tried a lot of methods - ext still no works.

Where did you get the card from?
Stupid question but two of my friends bought cheap (fake) cards from eBay and both had problems with them, either the card kept losing data or they go errors loading from the card due to the poor quality. In which case you need to spend a little more and get a proper card from amazon on a high street retailer.
If not then as suggested use try formatting and partitioning the card through the recovery on your phone, most of the up-to-date recoveries can do this and it's the easiest way to get the card ass needed for a2sd etc. if it still doesn't work then take the card back it's probably faulty.
I bought this card too and even though I had no issues formatting the card I do have speed issues with it. I've been in contact with Kingston and they're looking into it. My writing speed is 1.6Mb/s....
But now a tip for you, I couldn't use Gparted since it's Live CD wont start my monitors. So I downloaded Easeus Partition Master. Very easy to use and it worked perfect.
Start with your Fat32 partition and then your Ext partition.
You can find the program here: http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html

I have rooted my Desire, with an eye toward increasing my app space (I'm an app junkie, I guess). I haven't installed any new ROMs yet, but am getting ready to do so. Right now I'm looking at either CyanogenMod 7 or Supernova. I also just bought a new 16 gb SD card for the new partition. I know I need to do the following:
- Install new ROM
- partition the new SD card with ext4
- backup my current setup
- copy everything from stock SD card to new SD card?
I don't really care about copying over my data and apps. I can just re-download my apps, and most of my data is synced online. The only thing I might want to backup is my SMS messages. However, I will do a full backup with Titanium Backup Pro, just in case I need it. I rooted my phone with Revolutionary 0.4pre4 and would like to use Rom Manager to do everything else.
My questions are:
What order do I need to do the above steps? Obviously the backup is first. Should I just copy everything over from my old SD card to the new one? If so, how do I do this - just copy everything to my computer hard drive, then to the new card? And do I create a partition first, or doesn't it matter?
Allright, the very first thing you need to do, is backup the content from your sd card. Just copy all the files you want to maintain to your pc. You need to do this, because your sd card needs to be formatted.
Then, partition your sd card. If youre planning on installing Cyanogenmod, you dont really need to, since it fits perfectly in the internal memory of the desire. But do it anyway. If you want to switch, for example a runneymede rom later, you dont need to it then.
I recommend 15GB Fat32 primary - 1GB ext4 primary. See this exellent tutorial on how to partition your sd card: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
Now you partitioned your sd card, you can copy all the stuff you backed up on step 1 to your sd card.
Next, make a backup of your current setup. Go to recovery, in case of clockworkmod its backup/restore > restore. The backup will be stored on the SD card, so make sure you do this AFTER you partitioned it (like I described), or youll lose your backup.
Now its safe for you to flash your rom . Enjoy!
Since I rooted with revolutionary, but Rom Manager uses clockworkmod, does it matter if I flash clockworkmod over revolutionary?
And can I just use Rom Manager to format my sd card? Will it allow me to do a 15GB Fat32 primary - 1GB ext4 primary?
I also just realized that many ROMs, including Supernova, are GSM-only. My Desire is CDMA. Which Roms have a2sd+ for cdma?
It doesnt really matter which recovery you use, its a matter of taste. About the CDMA roms, I dont know by heart, since Ive got a GSM desire.
Hi
Im going to buy a new microsd card, an adata class 10, and im currently have an kingston class 4. I've been reading in the forum about getting partitions, but im still have some doubs...
1.- If i made a ext 2,3,4 partition and move many of my apps with link2sd or a2sd or any other app/script... will i see any real difference in performance against the default metod in andriod 2.3.7 of moving apps to the sd (fat32) in .asec? Or i should stay with that?
2.- Can i make the ext partition through the phone? I mean insert the sd card and plug the usb to the computer while im on the cwm and then using some tool on the pc like magic partition
3.- Can i do more than 2 fat or ntfs partitions: one for the android data, photos, caches, etc; and the othe for music and more... just for avoid the fragmentation
Thanks

1 on my experience, linking apps with link2sd to the 2nd partition gave me better performance than leaving them in the asec of the sdcard. I guess, cause the 2nd partition is mounted at boot, and has way fewer files than the storage partition. Also, you can use those apps while the phone is plugged with massive usb storage mode (apps installed to asec get disabled in that situation).
2 DON'T. EVER. DO. THAT.
Seriously, use a card reader, or you can mess up the sd pretty bad.
3 You can, but the phone won't read them, unless you can develop a kernel to mount more than one fat storage partition.
1. I don't see difference in performance.
2. I made my ext from recovery.

I dont have a sd reader, but i think i can ask someone to borrow me a laptop.
One last question:
Is there any advantage/diference in using fat32 or ntfs?

1. YES , with this work your main memory phone will be light and performance will be better and better ( i suggest test it )
2. NO, you should use card reader and i suggest using MiniTool partition wizard
3. YES , BUT your phone doest read all of them, just one of them! but you can use custom kernel to mount them but its NOT recomanded

in the phone(if you dont use files bigger than 5GB(1file>5GB)) , NO
if you have files more than 5GB you should use NTFS
if your files are less than 5GB you shoud use FAT32
in pc NTFS is more better than Fat32...
Hi again
Ive recently bought it (an adata class 10 micro sd) but, i dont obtain the minimun write speed that it claims...
I got around 5 MB/s though the phone usb and Above 25MB/s reading. I had a cache read ahead of 1024.
The thing is that i got a litlle more in writing when i use an sd reader (7-8 MB/s) but much lower reads (10-12 MB/s)
So i dont know what is happening, if its fake or if i fomatted it wrong (mini tool partition wizard) ...
Can i have any information if its real by the oem id and all the serial info sd tools gives? I can upload it if helps.
Thanks
