Okay, so my problem is that I'm not getting data on my phone suddenly. It doesn't matter what rom I'm using, it starts off with only bars, no data. Then after a while it goes to 1x and stays there no matter what even though I'm in a strong 3G area and have gotten 3G here 24/7 before. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? My roommate is behind me with his Droid X and he has 3G so it's not on Verizon's end.

Most all of the time when I flash from a clean (Factory Reset) I need to select the data roaming boxes in the mobile network settings.
I know tech support told me something about one of them, but I can't remember which one it was or what it was about.
But I think it has to do with how close I am to Canada?
I know if I don't select at least one of them, I get NO data.
Also sometimes I cycle Airplane mode to "Motivate" 3G.

Also Verizon has been messing with towers lately.

I used airplane mode for a second to try and switch it and it just turned all data off again. I gave up and went to sleep, and when I woke up it was 3G again. Not sure what the deal was. Maybe it was verizon. I'm in Williamsport PA so maybe they're gearing up for LTE here. That would be awesome. Thanks for the responses.
EDIT: My cell standby is abnormally high. Wonder if that has anything to do with this..

If all else fails, you could try a esn reset or update to the 722 radio.

Edit- just saw you're in china, so verizon is kinda useless, lol. sorry man...
Swap the ESN by moving your number over to a spare Verizon smartphone, then right back to your old phone. This forces the data stream to switch, and if it got corrupted it will be reset. Please note you MUST do this between two smartphones so you keep your data plan intact.
I believe verizon can do this from customer support if you don't have a spare smartphone, but i haven't tried it.
Thanks i will have a try
Up , anyone have a good idea for us ?

Hello,
My Defy is rebooting randomly, and I'm looking for a way to know why it reboots.
I'd like to have something monitoring the reboot events, in order to tell me why it reboots exactly, which service or application is causing the reboot.
Is it possible ?
thanks.
mine reboots randomly too, but even worse is that sometimes I get "only emergency calls" and keeps that way until I turn fly mode on&off. It's very annoying because i need to keep an eye on it.
I hadn't flashed mine, maybe these issues get solve if i use another ROM?
No rom solves it. Its to do with signnal strength and 3G. You will find two more threads in same section. But no one wants to help.

Try another SIM card? I read that some SIM Defy give problems and restarts ...
i've only tried a SIM but it's new.
It seems to be a software problem, because it happens randomly and recovers signal every time i switch flight mode on and off...
It has to do with signal strength and 3G. I would suggest that is there is one particular area it does it in, note that area and contact TMobile. They have solved my issues every time I have called into them about it. I suspect part of the issue has to do with the tower.

Have read other threads on this saying same. In the US, T-Mo seems pretty good at responding to these calls.
I'm in France, so T-Mobile should provide me with no help.
However, I will give a try with a new SIM card.
The problem is when you walk into elevator or some cabin. No signal initiates reboot then and tmob cant help in such cases. Is there a developer who can help me with fine tuning one already existing app?. Its called Shutupbattery saver. It switches Off data when signal is low but it needs more modification to make it work. I am ready to pay if someone can help. This tool will also be useful to everyone to save a lot of battery in low signal areas.

Are you running wifi at the same time? I've noticed this exaggerates the problem even more. The other thing I noticed is if you phone is overclocked, put it back to stock and see if it still happens. That was one of the observations I made with both of mine.
With or without WiFi makes no difference. The phone is using official "Orange FR" 2.51.1 ROM, no root, no overclock (even no app), and it may work perfectly for several days and then start to reboot.
It rebooted during the week end. On monday I managed to stop it after several factory reset and wipe of cache. It worked on monday afternoon and tuesday ; and on wednesday morning, during the breakfast the phone restarted one time. Afterward, in the morning several reboots occured, I tried to factory reset the phone two times. The first one with no success (using the bootloader's recovery), the second one by using the "confidentiality" menu of the phone, and it stopped the reboots.
The phone have been working since 10 am and the last reset, and no reboot occured. I installed no app after this reset, I only replaced the SIM by a new one this evening.
I will try the phone like this tomorrow, and on friday I will start to reinstall my applications, and test each one prior to install the next one.

All those observations I made was with stock rom and with no/less apps. I will wait for the Scratman to come back and report his findings. Hope the sim thing works. I am damn fed up of walking into no signal zone again.
If you know the phone is going to reboot, before it does hit *#*#4636#*#* on the dial pad and let us know what the phone is connected to, signal strength, etc. I know I could alwasy tell when mine was going to do it as the phone got real sluggish and it acted almost like a kernel panic. It was a very obvious behavior.
Signal strength with 3G below 102dbm is when it reboots.

OK i came across this wonderful app called Tasker. I tried doing some stuff but this app is realllllllly complex. Can any bright mind download the app here and make a sequence which says "low signal then switch off APN".
I made some but i am pretty sure I am wrong. Here is the code for the direct download. It is a trial and will expire in 9days.

I have the same problem with random reboots.
I sent it in to Motorola and got it back now with only the speaker exchanged (!?!).
Of course now I still have the problem. Upgraded then to Finland 2.2. with Pays Mod, but reboots still sometimes (once or twice a day).
Tried ShutupBatterySaver to turn of data connection when the signal is too low --> still reboots.
I think I can remember that once somebody in this forum posted a link from the Motorola support with a bugfix, but I can't find it anymore. Anyone here knows more?
Has anyone else tried replacing their SIM with a uicc SIM? Others on the non-us Moto forum are reporting SIM replacement as a cure -- but I recommend you get the latest uicc version.

i'v got mine yesterday and i have this prablem too. last night when i was sleep it happend and i woke late for my class...
sometimes when i lock the phone i cant unlock it and i have to remove battery an restart the phone...
i tried two diffrent sim but this steel hapens...
how can i fix it???
sorry for my english
On caulkins rom. Everything was fine, then in the last few days, Gps takes 30 seconds or more to lock. Sometimes not lock at all.
My phone did have a couple of minor drops, but nothing bad.
Any ideas?
Typical for a Samsung phone, you can download GPS status from the market and reset your GPS, sometimes that helps.
im running a stock one that i just got rom saturday and I have been seeing intermittent issues too... sometimes no lock on my 60 mile drive to work!!!!!
im gonna try gps status....
I just came back from a 9 hour road trip, clear skies, my phone would frequently loose the signal altogether or be off by a few hundred feet. Next time I'll just use my Garmin, or an HTC phone.

Clearing the GPS cache with GPS status always works for me. But I really rarely have to do it, and have had GPS on for 8 hours before without issue. Seems like what someone said before is true: not all Samsung's are created equal.

Im inclined to believe this, the other sgs2 in the family didn't loose the GPS signal like mine did during the trip.
I'm still stock and I recently went on a 12 hour drive with a lock the entire way even through the occasional storm... Nothing major.

Now after Clearing it, do you lead GPS Status to Download the AGPS Data after? or After Clearing the GPS Cache, do you close GPS Status, then use Google Map?
I'd like to know
Thank you!
Strange, I've been using this phone for over a month now, and have never had a GPS issue. I use GPS quite often with google maps, google nav, or Waze, and the lock is almost instant. Hasn't ever lost GPS lock either. I'm on a stock rooted EL29 ROM, with EL29 modem and Rogue 1.4.0 Kernel/Recovery. Will not be going anywhere near the touch recovery mess. I'm in NYC, so often the tall buildings will interfere with the signal at ground level, but it's no more than a block off in those areas. But that's a common problem with GPS, and my old Evo had the same issues.

just got of the phone with sprint after 2 hours of troubleshooting. they made be restart me phone a million times din't work, they made me reactivate the phone didn't work, finally got transfered to someone with a bit of knowledge and its been working so far.
what they did with me on the was:
1. go to settings
2. system updates
3. update profile
4. restart
it hasn't gone to **** yet hope this works for the long run not for now.
Strange thing for me is that my first phone's gps was broken. They gave me the refurb I have now and it was just great. Locked in a few seconds and stayed locked.
Now for the last couple of weeks, it has just been terrible. doesn't lock for minutes at a time. GPS Test app shows pretty bad reception.
The problem is that it only seems to work, when I finally start driving towards the sprint store, to put in for a replacement.
I also went back to complete stock. el29

Interesting - what would be contained in a profile update that would be useful here though? Does a profile update simply reset your GPS in the same way that GP Test does?
i was on the phone yesterday with sprint for 2 hours and today went back to the same ****. called them again after 45 mins they decided to write an e ticket for the phone and went and got a new one. they are saying it's a bug in the white e4gt. don't now if it's happening to any one with black phones.

I'm running the Lab Rats v2.3 rom with Persues alpha36 kernel and MA7 Baseband Modem. A few days ago I started having a strange issue with having full wifi or mobile data 4g signal, but nothing was connecting to the network. Restarting the phone would get connection for a couple of minutes until everything loads and then would end, even though still showing full signal. In Settings-About-Phone Status under Network it showed Unknown instead of Sprint, all other info was correct. I tried updating PLR and Profile, but it didn't work. I then did ##SCRTN# (##72786#), still didn't fix connection problems and Network still read Unknown instead of Sprint.
Had to full wipe and reflash the rom, then connectivity started working but still Network Unknown. Again did tried ##SCRTN# but nothing.
Even though I get wifi and mobile data, problem is when I try to purchase apps through Google Play Market via Bill my Sprint Account, it says cannot verify network or something along those lines.
Again this started a few days ago, and all was good prior. The dev who posted Lab Rats told me that the rom has nothing to do with network connectivity, so I was hoping someone here can help me out with any suggestions or a fix.
Thanks

I think its a problem with rom because I have the same issue .I flash a stock rooted or any other tw rom and everything is fine .let the dev know may be he will be able to fix it
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Yea it is a prob with the rom. I flashed a different rom and the Network read Sprint again, then I flashed back to the updated version of Lab Rats and same problem. He told me network issue isnt the roms fault, and to try to flash a different modem, but thats not it either since I tried and it didnt work. I think maybe something, a system apk or something was left out thats why it doesnt read the network... I know he removed VPNDialogs.apk which is why vpn apps like Tunnel Bear or OpenVPN don't work, but I let him know and he will probably include it in his updater for those who need it to download and install. So I will compare other roms with Lab Rats for some sort of system apk that sounds like it has to do with network and install it and see what happens.

synergy rom and perseus kernel
I have a similar issue. I am running the synergy rom and using the perseus kernel. I can get data just fine, but I cn not make or receive voice calls. The calls will go through but no sound will be played. The sound works fine in all other conditions. Doing a factory reset fixes this, but only temporarily.

Im having the same issue as you, i am running whomp rom with the latest perseus kernel, it just began yesterday and i ahve tried everything from restoring to a back up, to ##786#. I am lost... no calls can be heard but the call does go through.
As you can see, the rom isnt necessarily the issue as two other roms report the same things.
Usually prl updates or system updates will fix any network connectivity issue.
The unknown network has nothing to do with anything. Its cosmetic and hasn't effected anything other than to remove Sprint from the dropdown bar.
Its quite possible the reason you guys were told thats not the issue is because its not. We, as all the other people here try to make everything as smooth an workable as possible.

My signal strength doesn't seem to be showing correctly. It's either that, or the bars are the same colour as the background. There is definitely signal there, as I have good internet connection and phone reception. However, the bars are all grey and it always shows as no signal.
This is a rooted n7100. It happened about 3 weeks ago after I installed a version of CM10.1. I have since wiped my SD card and re-installed another ROM. I cleared caches and properly wiped it but it still doesn't work, which is odd. Could someone tell me the file that has the signal strength colours? Or a solution to why this may be happening?
Thanks!

there;s something I'm not getting, there's NO signal? you can't make calls? or you can?
go to the phone and dial:

if it begins with 0049 or null/null then I guess you might HAVE to stick with CM ROMs, because you messed up your EFS partition due to the kernel update.

I'm really sorry but H+ doesn't mean you have full signal. It is the data connection type. Those grey lines that you see should be blue. I promise you. That's how CM10 works.
Are there any devs that can help?
I need to reset my signal strength indicator...
Has anyone else's data and hot spot slowed way down to where they barely work after the ARI4 update on the SM-G960U? Nothing will load on chrome or most of my apps and hot spot is useless. I've tried updating the prl/profile, a soft reset, clearing the cache and changing the preferred data to lte/cdma and nothing has helped. I really don't want to do a hard reset. I'm on boost mobile but the other two phones' data work just fine.
ok it worked for a while now i'm back to the same issue. data buffers/cuts on and off, it cut off completely yesterday and 5G wifi no longer shows up. (been that way for a while). boost was no help whatsoever and the morons kept telling me that 5G data isnt out in my area yet. um, i said 5G wifi.. plus i got disconnected 4 times in two hours of chat. i'm done with that

get the latest firmware from sammobile.com and flash it via Odin. There are 2 CSC files to choose from, one of them factory resets, the other just applies the update. Use the update one, and go from there.

Tell them 5GHz rather than 5G, they are just monkeys reading scripts from a screen
Try changing the 5GHz channel on your router, I know mine can only serve all 5Ghz capable devices if I set it to CH36, any higher and some can't see it

As above, update your firmware, you can use the U1 firmwares without the carrier bloat too to get the latest release
Factory reset is sometimes the only fix though

I messaged them through Facebook, as they told me to do and it was still useless talking to them. They completely blew off the fact that my data is wonky and it was cutting off. Typical of them though.
Unfortunately I don't have access to the router, it's a shared network for where we live. I've asked them to reset it and they did but it still didn't help. All my other phones are picking it up so it has to be this phone.
I'm on an U1 firmware now and the same thing. Not just that when I use the phone now it gets stuck in it. I'll hit home and nothing, just the phone screen until I restart it. I tried to go back to U but I get stuck at "file analysis" for some odd reason.

If you did not reset after flashing the U1 firmware I'd suggest backing up and factory resetting then
