I am currently in this dilemma, so I just wanted to put my thoughts out there(not trying to start a flame war here) and also (hopefully) get some thoughts from current wp7 users.
My biggest deterrent from wp7 is device quality, all the manufacturers seem to have been very careful not to step on MS's toes for the start, though MWC may change that(hopefully the new devices would be different from the same system and we may see tegra 2 or the new MSM chip, which looks absolutely amazing I must add)
The things that attract me specifically to the OS is the new UI, as it is finally a shift from the more symbian type of UI.
The downside is that some of the parts of the OS are unfinished, no threaded messages, socket support is a no show. Simply put, as it is now, it is amazing BUT, it is also flawed.
Android now has a far more mature OS which is feature complete. But the UI is still very similar to the old main menu with a grid of icons. Yes, there are widgets but, it can get a bit cluttered and, unlike the current symbian, they can be in different styles.
Hardware on the otherhand is absolutely amazing, the nexus s would easily go up there as a device of choice!
Obviously fragmentation is an issue, look at the galaxy s which will probably take 6 months to get 2.3 (nexus s will not have this issue). Wp7 still has to prove itself in this department.
Apps is once again a maturity argument, though I do want to support luma arcade ( South African devs) and the fact that I know c# means that I could make something myself is a plus side.
That bit though was just opinion.
In the end it is pretty much looking to be device quality that is keeping me away from wp7 though. If all goes to plan it will be a platform that can hang with Android in terms of usability, though it still needs a bit to get there.
Android on the other hand has basically only one device that would intrest me as I wouldn't want to be left out of the official loop.
I know that xda does cook roms for Android devices, but I like that to be a secondary option(once again opinion)
To explain my thoughts I think I need to add what I am using now as a phone.
Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic with C6 firmware as a base. Then I took a whole bunch of other mods and cooked them into my own personal firmware.
I don't have the experience( or at this moment need) to make my own mods.
I like tweaking it to get the best performace and usability while still looking as good as possible and am very willing to sacrifice a looks for usability.
(Once again I really just want this to be an outsiders view on choosing between the two)
EDIT: Looks like I was wrong in that threaded messaging does exist on wp7, just not in email.
Gee, only the fifth thread this week on the exact same subject. Despite there being a thread right above it aptly titled Android vs WP7.
Whatever you can afford and makes you happy my friend. Go for it. These are exciting times.
Just to correct one point you made, there are currently threaded messages in WP7 and they work great.
I've used both android and wp7 and I prefer wp7, but it's probably because I hate having to get custom roms etc. I spent literally tens of hours attempting to customise my android device to my liking but never managed it. In my opinion, the wp7 homescreen gives me all the info i need at a glance - better than I could ever make my android handset.
But it sounds like you like to tinker and customise, so I'm not sure if WP7 will be able to keep you interested for the long haul until custom roms become available
Use what you think will work best for you, in the end, i reckon both are great OSes
i believe he was referring to email threading.
if you have time to wait, see what gets announced at MWC. there is rumour of some pretty big stuff coming, but who knows if its just minor software/more hardware.
Android gives more options in many ways today.
I had the same dillema but have chosen different solution: I stay with WinMo for some time.
Because I can't stand Android UI. Really.Too much candy.
I bought WP7 just today and WHAT IS there, is outstanding.
Problem is many things are missing so far, so knowing my scenario I don't imagine beeing able to rely only on this.
But the WP7 experience is just amazing.
You like to tinker with your phone then I think you better suit with Android.
I'm afraid if you buy WP7 now, you will be disappointed.

This about sums it up. Are there features missing in WP7? Absolutely. I won't get into it here, check out out one of the flame wars in the other threads. BUT...what WP7 does, it does exceptionally well. You need to decide if you can live with its shortcomings. If you can't, then get another platform. If you can, then definitely get WP7. It will blow you away. But that's a big "if", and be certain about it. Do your research and make an informed decision or end up like one of the disgruntled curmudgeons in this forum.

Thank you for all the replies, I think waiting a month or two to see what happens won't kill me.
For living with shortcomings of an operating system, I use symbian on old hardware and actually enjoy it so, I can easily survive a missing feature or two in return for performance.
Info at a glance is a great thing, and when I tinkered on the emulator it seemed as if it had depth to it as well ( my iPod touch on the other hand has the depth of a puddle in a drought, : none)
These are exiting times indeed! Now I just read another article implying nokia might make wp7 phones. That would be very intresting indeed.
yea, though i think it will be quite some time before this happens but who knows. anyways, what i'd suggest is just head to your local store and see if you can play with one, check out the messaging, people, photos, xbox, zune, and office hubs and see what the phone is all about. but yes there are missing features. another 7 or 8 months isn't the best thing to wait for, but aye, we waited this long and i'm happy with what i got.
Well, no stores have stock in South Africa. It is a special order, which would mean that I would anyway import my own at a lower cost.
But you are right. Being able to use the device itself would be the best thing.
Although we already have this thread: [Q] Telefone Android x Windows 7?
As it closed due to flames and many wars, I'll leave this thread open and the [Q] Telefone Android x Windows 7? closed up permanently.
Just be careful not to turn this new thread in flame and war, because if that happens, I'll close this and any that begin to compare the two OS.

might just be easier to ban tomhierl from wp7 threads and you would clear up 90% of the abuse and flames in one hit.
As to the original question it really depends on what you want from the phone as they are no a direct competition for each other other than both being smart phones.
Android is amazing for openess features customization but lacks in style smoothness apps that take advantage of the power on most devices (still feel old but work ok) and its music ability is pretty dire.
WP7 plus is its style smoothness use of hubs (you have to use them to realize how great they are (and no the fact that other phones mix up you contacts and facebook is not the same thing)) its music features are far beyond anything on the market inc iphone in fact makes iphone look old in this area and its xbox live integration (there is already a cross platform mulit-player game in the market and thats just a sign of whats to come) what you do lack is certain features some high end users need like tethering and mass storage etc
So the question shouldnt be what one is best but what one is best for you, I say go try a demo of wp7 it really is something new and refreshing.
lumpaywk, I understand what you're saying.
However I believe people can mature and improve.
Although the user that you commented cause flames, other users who respond to provocation are as guilty as he.
If only one claim and ignore the others and tells moderation, it's easy, go there and issue a ban.
Now when a user calls and the others start a fight, what can I do? Ban for everyone? Of course not.
As I reported in other forums, I always try to clarify my views on the subject and then put the warning.
Thereafter, any user who does not heed the advice, either by starting a fight or to continue it, will be issued an infraction, not accepting and continuing in error, then a ban.
I always try to guide and give some chance, only if he do not understand this and I'll ban is persisting.
You are probably right but try putting tomheirl and troll into google - I think the results speak for themselves.

Excuse me. But I can only temper what is done on the XDA and I am notified.
can not run the risk of being influenced by research done on google. Though reliable, can highlight only one side of the story of the people, perhaps the worst.
I prefer to follow my systematic already established and that is getting results. Nor am I the only one moderator, and can be advised by other Comite or Seniors, so I must restrict myself to what I see here on XDA forum, without external reference!
Still, I appreciate your help and research, will certainly be very useful for all of us in moderation!
i first played with wp7 in the store, and it felt totally not for me
however under the pressure of getting something new, i still got the wp7 cuz it was different.
now i LOVE it, really, in some ways the custumization is super limited, but its not that needed. the ui really works so well that yes you feel bored having only it, but it just works too well to have anything else.
my main gripe is the crappy media player
i cant search a specific song, no playing by folders, no nice list to play from.
its total crap, i cant wait till they release a normal player that can just play a list of music from a folder, and i can search a specific song i want.
how the hell am i supposed to play a mix cd i downloaded with 15 different artists on it?
by finding them 1 at a time through album or artist.
**** like this pisses me off
including the ZUNE SOFTWARE will not allow you to play music by folders
i literally have NO way to listen to a cd that has all different names in it.

Something I can actually help with!
For this, you would have to make sure(obviously) that the cd has all it's tags for the same album. If not, then just make an album called mix cd 1 or something and put all the songs in that.
OR
Make a playlist with those songs in and sync.

I was reading that MS will control updates, not relying on the service providers. I think that is a very good thing. My HTC Vogue never got a single update from Bell. However, HTC did have updates, I just had to go find them. If MS maintians control, updates should reach the users much faster.

though there is no direct search, under music, go across to songs and use the letter blocks for quick jumps to the song you want to play (as if you would in the people's hub).
I haven't done so myself, but based on what I see in the playlists section, you should be able to make playlists off Zune Desktop, and sync the playlist to your phone. this should help, but yea there is no direct "play folder", but if you have the tags setup as mentioned before, they appear in albums, or create a playlist. But i think they need to improve it a bit more so you can create a playlist on the phone too.
This has got to be someone's idea of a bad joke. I have an LG Quantum on AT&T and a Moto Droid on VZW. If I hear one more person tell me that WP7 blows Android out of the water I'll club them over the head with a blunt instrument.
I don't even know where to start the complaints on this brick.
No custom ringtones.
No custom themes.
No SD card or other expandable memory. (Some devices may have this)
No sideloading apps.
Very few free apps. Even the free apps for Android are paid apps for WP7.
No Flash support.
No Bluetooth file transfer.
There's so many cons to this thing I'm sure I left a few out. Piece of advice for those in the market for a new phone, PASS! Get an Android phone or a dumbed down media phone before you get this POS. At least you know up front that Apple is gonna big brother you to death on their devices.
I'm sorry I even thought about posting this. Yes, I know these are documented. All I guess I really meant to say was that the platform lacks some of the most common features of modern smartphones.
I can't believe how many people will resort to name calling and personal attacks WHILE telling someone else to grow up.

LOL Wow.
First off, your post has absolutely nothing to do with the LG Quantum. Here I was all excited that someone actually had it and was going to debate some negatives with it.
Secondly, do you honestly use custom ringtones? Enough to create an entire thread about it?
Custom themes? Why, so you can have purple on neon pink? Blechh, there are barely any good custom themes for wm, and that thing's been around since the dark ages.
I've never paid for an app, and my app list is getting longer by the day. Are you blind? Can you not see the "FREE" list in every app category?
Flash is a bad idea, it just slows things down
SD card? The phone comes with 16gb. I've got tons of music, apps, and a couple movies, and I'm still at like 9gb left. What on earth are you loading onto your phone?
Bluetooth I'll give you. But the OS is early, it'll come.
See the problem is, adults with families, work, and lives don't have 10 hours a day to tweak and install fixes. Wp7 has that "it just works" functionality, with a next-gen sleek look and design. It's not Android (thank goodness), and you should have done some research before you went ahead and bought something out of the blue.

This is precisely why people with a braincell or two look into a phone before they get it. Also, WP7 blows android out of the water.
I just turned on and dinked around with my HTC Aria for the first time in several weeks (I hadn't used it since getting my Samsung Focus). It was a PITA to use in comparison to my Focus, and it was powered off and back in the drawer within a few minutes. Before you go on about different levels of Android devices, I'm specifically talking about the interface, style, and ease of use of the OS (or lack thereof).
Interestingly, I've already converted 4 people to WP7: 2 upgraded from feature phones, which means that they'd avoided smartphones for years and finally decided that WP7 was easy enough for them. The other two, my Dad and his wife, switched out an Android and a Blackberry, respectively, because neither ever had the time nor capacity to figure out either of those two operating systems. Both love their Focii.
So yeah, WP7 is bested in many, many ways by iOS and Android (and these have been well-documented), but there's a lot to be said for the new UI and its ease of use.
But, this is all a waste of breath because, as Jim said, TROLL.

you have the lg! It has full registry access. You can theme the device in several ways via the registry and even application shortcuts
there are three ways to theme

b. http://wmpoweruser.com/tutorial-for-creating-picture-wallpaper/
c. registry entries can be used to customize page layout, toolbars, menus, keyboards, EVERYTHING! If that's not a theme, please by all that is god, tell me what it is

5. Very few free apps!?

6. No flash support
Granted, but it's coming soon...
7. BT File transfer?
hm...here I thought people were moving to cloud based storage and not bt file systems
I say it again. If anyone is getting a device, read and research

If you really want to debate the phone itself (platform excluded) that's a bit difficult. As for the phone, the only "less desirable" features as far as I am concerned would be the slide out keyboard layout and I would like to have SD card storage for videos. I really like the hardware otherwise.

Heck do you really and I mean really need chevron in this regard??? It's a 3 second registry edit away!
It doesn't take much to learn your device and learn your hacks, and save from no flash (battery drain and slows mobile down) and bt support, you have an extremely good device. Heck save from the garish design, I would venture to say that the lg is probably one of the best phones on the market. If it didn't look like it was from 2008, it would be extremely popular.
That said, read the quantum forums. You have plenty of options regarding to getting it the way you like it.
Actually, if you do want to give it a better home =) I would want one
Welcome to early adoption. Android had many of these teething problems at 1.0. You'll get used to it, and will love when the features start pouring in later this year.
Real LG Quantum user
At the risk of actually being on-topic:
I have the LG Quantum and I love it. The performance is great, the screen is bright, and I need a keyboard because I am a typist. I'm not a hunt and peck guy and the phone is my business phone. Even at that, I watch movies on NetFlix on 3G (don't need wifi) without a hitch.
Windows Phone 7 is easy to use. You don't need a manual like the phones with thousands of disparate apps that can all run at the same time, thus screwing your ability to even make a phone call, and eventually crashing the phone. My Wife has one too, and that definitely means it is easy to use. I too have converted people, because it not about raw features that many people don't care about, it is about ease of use for major tasks, like making phone calls, keeping in touch, and taking pictures.
I have IMDB which I use all the time, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix! (yay), and Kindle. I also have a few webpages pinned to my home screen, including the Kepler exo-planet count, and the wp7list app count, which is now fast closing in on 10,000.
I hate to say, but Android is like Windows Mobile -- I had that beast for a while, but it was hard to control with full multitasking. Invariably someone wrote a bad app (pretty often, really) and killed the battery.
I believe that with the current application launching model with tombstoning,
WP7 will be ahead when it does add multitasking, because apps already know how to be interrupted gracefully and restore gracefully. The order of this was pretty smart by microsoft because, when it comes, multitasking will "just work".
I like the way Microsoft limited access to items that could be harmful. Just after a few turkeys complained that the one should be able to call an API to send a text message whenever they liked, it was announced Android had wacko apps that would send your personal info without you knowing it, and kill not only your identity but your data plan as well.
Sure, there are things missing, like custom ring tones, but a phone is a tool for increasing my productivity, and secondarily a toy. I don't really want Microsoft to get the two confused.
Once we get the initial update glitches out the way, updates and upgrades will come. WP7 already has features that no one has -- Microsoft will add more, and I believe, faster in the future.
Enjoy Windows Phone 7!

LOL, touche huh? Oh, the things we'll say in the midst of a rant...
Lets try to keep it friendly and stay on topic please folks.....
Much appreciated.
I am new to xda-developers.com. I found this place because I wanted to try out android before getting an android phone. You see I am a IPhone user for 4 years. Don't get me wrong the integration of IPhone is sweet and even now do not see such amazing integration in Android. But I'm not a brand bigot.
So recently I purchased a Nook Color. I did this because I saw it as the least expensive choice for a capacitive touch screen tablet other than IPad. Keep in mind IPS screen is important to me, I'm a pro photographer and developer.
The reason I could make this step is xda-developers. I brought my Nook home and rooted it to phiremod v6 in the first 30 minutes. Added some things I like (angry birds, miren browser, flash 10, bible and some others).
So far the experience has been acceptable and I am learning each day. But what gives me confidence is the xda-developer network. It give me a good feeling that I will not be abandoned by hardware vendors as I have in the past (apple updates for years before finally reducing features to old phones).
All you guys rock. Keep up the good work. Soon I hope to get up and running on a development system (as soon as I can run the dev env in a virtualbox).
I am now carefully looking at the dell streak 5 (don't laugh I like the large screen).
Nice comments. XDA is a great site lots of committed techies sharing their knowledge......awesome........ I got the color nook as well cause I wanted for my 4 yr old . Now I love that thing so much fun to mod.
I like the 5" screen as well fits my hands and easier to see on it. Just wish it had a better op system..............still waiting for the S2
I notice that there is a lot of streaks on ebay for a good price. Is there a new version coming out? Just haven't seen any news/rumors about that.
XDA converted me from blackberry's to droids
I loved my streak try it out i dont figure a new one will be out for awhile! I now have a galaxy tab even bigger lol!
I was thinking the same thing (as the originator of this thread).
I got my first Android phone maybe 3 weeks ago, and since then I've used maybe 8 ROMs, each of which has its own strengths, and I was having a hard time deciding which to settle on...until...I tried Royal Ginger.
It looks and acts pretty much 100% like Cyanogen, but it doesn't have the 3G/4G connectivity problem of Cyanogen. In other words, it's freakin' bad-ass, and works 100%.
Anyway, like everyone else said, I would like my phone MUCH less without you people.
So, thanks.

How do u do guys?
I used to be a Samsung i900 "Omnia" user for more than 3 years.
I just purchased a Galaxy Nexus from Expansys USA.
Now I feel totally lost cause Android esp. ICS does not have a start menu!
I need to learn how to use this thing some how and as fast as possible thru books or tutorials or videos or guides here on the forum.
Also I need the KOOLEST apps ever on android market. cause I wanna piss off my iPhone4 friends.
I wanna become the hippiest Galaxy Nexus user of the planet! ;D
thanx for all the help.
Goodbye Omnia but rest assured that your love is still in my heart.
Thats a pretty amazing upgrade, from WinMo 6.1 to the best Android phone running the latest and greatest Android version!
Start installing some apps from the market, check out the top apps on the several sections.
Add your social networks accounts to the phone and add some widgets to your home screens. From personal experience, Android users are always testing new layouts and widgets
Try a few games and witness the power of the Nexus!

Android is pretty simple to use, may take a few days to get used to it. But with ICS, its definitely more user friendly.
that's pretty impressive. i remember when i switched from the imagio over to a fascinate, but switching from an omnia to the g nexus? huge! there are plenty of apps lists out there. just remember to check the permissions before you install anything... if you see a game that has the ability to make phone calls... might want to do some research.
I'm coming from an Omnia II (Verizon SCH-i920) so we're about in the same boat. I've had to assist my wife with her D2G so I picked up Android pretty quick. I was hooked, went out and bought a Xoom, now have a VZW Galaxy Nexus. Lovin' it so far!
Android is not that easy to use, especially coming from another os, or if you've never used it before. There is a getting started guide that comes with the nexus, but I'm the type of guy that tinkers with every button until I figure things out

First off, "Yo Dawgz" went out around the same time WinPho 6.1 became obsolete.
I would start off with trying out free featured apps from the market. There are tons of cool stuff you can get for free. Too bad you just missed the 0.10 app specials.
Finally, ROOT AND FLASH!
Congratulations on purchasing intelligently.
Market download #1, angry birds so you can catch up to the last 2 years of smartphone gaming in one fell swoop.

This isnt a knock against the Nexus, but somewhat against ICS in general. There are more than a few apps that are unavailable to me to download that I purchased previous to getting the Nexus. Navigon navigation being one of them, is unavailable to get from play store. There are a few others, too, a motorcycle game I wanted to buy just now isn't available for my Nexus. This is I think one of the very few pros of owning an apple product. If the app worked on ios 4, it will work on ios 5, and if it doesnt, an update is issued soon there after.

Blame the developer for not updating it then?
Alternatively, go to the web store and try to install it that way.
The app developers haven't updated their apps yet. If you think about it it's to be expected. How many phones are running ICS out there compared to gingerbread?

Or those with 720p screens?
OK, I guess that is the more correct direction to point the finger, the app developers, but I think google should lien on the developers some to get the apps working correctly, especially the big $$ ones. I have side loaded the Navigon app and its all messed up on ICS.

Google can't force developers to keep their apps updated though. That said, the play store says it has ICS updates. It is more likely a resolution issue.

I dont think the screen res is as big a deal at this point, there are several oddball size screens that apps look fine on. Droid X was one, 480X854, and everything was fine on it. Plus there are several 720P phones out there now.
Also on the Navigon app, its the voice that was messed up, studdering and repeating itself over and over.

Do those 720p devices have support?
480x854 isn't an oddball resolution; a good chunk of Motorola handsets and some Sony as well use this resolution.

Well, again to go back to the Navigon app, reading on the play store it seems to work on the HTC Rezound ok,...

This is true, I forgot to mention that.
It's easy for apple to make it easy because they've had the same screen size and resolution for over 2 years now, going on 3 if they don't change it up this summer.
I'm sorry, but blaming the developers is a far cry from the truth...
Lets face it, Google doesn't even prioritize developers... While iOS developers have access to preview versions of the next iOS, to start to debug in advance, that work on the latest available generation iDevice, google doesn't do that... So, while iOS developers had many months to debug and test and fix their apps (and at the same time, they did not have to buy a new phone), most developers need to wait until the first phone with the new Android O/S is released, and then it is like running against the time, as you need to grab a new phone, bla bla bla... And no, an emulator doesn't really help you with games and other apps that are high performance...
It is a shame that some big companies like E.A. seems to get no interest into the Galaxy Nexus (as the lack of good games like Real Racing 2, Peggle, PvsZ is astonishing for a multi million dollar company), but, as far as most developers are concerned, it is not fair to compare iOS and Android. One tries to give all the tools so the developers are ready for the launch, the other, meh... Gives close to nothing and all you earn is a big surprise with a new O/S where some things you were used to use doesn't work, and it is up to you to grab a new device, specifically when it was already launched and you have dozens of angry consumers telling that you suck...
I have a friend who is an Android developer and somehow has managed to keep device compatibility with each OS release without ever owning the device.
So interesting theory, but it is at least partially a BS copout. Especially in this thread, where ICS updates have been made to the program, and yet the GN has been out since November and has no support. That is of no fault from Google.
Also, developers that are not willing to spend money, to make money, suck anyway. I think Navigon can afford some Galaxy Nexus devices.

I can see both POVs for sure. I will always hate EA, they refuse to update their apps, REFUSE to, and WILL NOT respond to any email. I dont buy anything from EA on ANY console/device, that includes sports games. Anyways back on topic: If we were still within the first month or two of ICS launch then I would agree that we need to give the devs more time to work this out, but since we are not.. I say it is absolutely, at this point, the devs fault for not updating his/her app(s). I know there are some devs that are still currently struggling to get their apps updated and doing it without an ICS device, but personally I think its been enough time. Although better late than never. One app that comes to mind, and I mentioned this on another thread the other day, is WiFi Status! That was always a favorite app of mine, very simple, just if your WiFi is on but your not connected to a network it puts a symbol in your notif bar so you remember to turn it off.. How hard can it possibly be to update that!? That surely isn't Google's fault, its the devs.
