I'm dual booting Energy/Android (FRX07.1)
...wondering how to allow Android to access the refill website (data pass in Fido-speak).
Currently having to reboot WinMo just to purchase more data credits as Android cannot access the APN when credits run out, AND won't get there with WiFi either when this happens.
Wondering whether this is a simple tweak and whether it is just this Froyo build?
I haven't tested any other Android ports/kernels yet and hoping that if it is simple that someone could save me some time.
and/or
more importantly if this an issue I'm interested in helping to identify a fix for it.
Just go to the website..?
I dunno, I have a 'normal' post-pay setup with my carrier....
Guess I'm more curious about what causes this to happen.
In other words why/how does WM get to the refill site without data credits and why/how come Android can't access it.
Thanks for the excellent package which I'm using as my main interface.

I'd assume there's some application installed in WinMo that does this...? Have you asked the carrier, do they have an Android app or some other solution?
I have no clue how the phone actually gets to the refill site without data credits... again, this would be a question for the carrier IMHO. Do you have some carrier-branded version of WinMo or something? I need to know more about the interface in WinMo to help, although I don't think I will be able TBH. Sorry.
There's a whole slew of different ways a carrier could implement this. The simplest is using a second APN that's reserved for connecting to the refill website. I suspect that asking the carrier is going to get no answer.

You're probably right, but what else can we do...? He's going to have to figure out why it works in WinMo. That's why I am asking - do they support native Android devices, and what do they do for those devices? Figure that out, and you may be able to apply it to our port. Maybe.

I will ask Fido, though from past experience they are iffy on discussing tech stuff with a pay-per-use customer with an un-fido-branded phone, LOL.
Have to try with another Sim from Rogers that I've got here somewhere, to get close to gleaning whether its carrier or o/s based.
No branding at all on the WinMo (Energy v6.5|21916).
Know that in Android I set up my APN manually whereas with WM it was done automatically. I skimmed over the WM rom specs but saw no mention of what was used for the auto-config, will look further.
Also note that Android on my phone will only connect automatically to Rogers. I get "Error while searching for network" when searching networks to find Fido. Yes the WM does find and connect to Fido. I'm thinking that may point to the solution & sorry for not having mentioned this.
Thanks for your helps.
I have to apologize, just looking at my APN settings and they got wiped from what I entered, though STILL connecting somehow, maybe these settings causing my lockout. LOL.

IF it's an Android issue and IF I can help to solve it and IF it gets added to the port it'd be an honor.
Waiting for my credits to run out here and will play with the settings to try to connect.

Wait, it's not a FIDO branded phone? How did you get it to work in WinMo..?
You said it works fine in WinMo - if it wasn't provided by the carrier, you had to have done something to get it to work with them...

Bought this phone used and it's the unbranded version of the Rhodium. Was never locked to any provider
I'm looking into how Energy rom autoconfig'd the network. Sorry have been busy w/other things so bit more time needed.

Interesting that it "just works" in WinMo. I think that lays even more credence to the APN theory hyc had... or whatever CDMA would use in lieu of an APN.
Fido is GSM. APNs are key to the question.

Re: MMS/APN settings for non-Fido phones

Have noticed several different APN settings that will work for data.
Can anyone offer explanation as to why there isn't just one setting that works?
I'm on Android on an unbranded (not unlocked) handset and using the "fido-core-appl1.apn" version of the APN settings and have 2 issues:
1-never get 3G, get E
2-when data credits run out (on pay-per-use) I can not access the refill/redirect site and have to go into WindowsMobile to refill.
The second is my most pressing (and annoying) issue since I don't necessarily care about my network speed at the moment.
Wonder why Fido doesn't have the different APN names/settings posted somewhere (if they did, mybad for missing it) and instead throws us into a public forum to get this info.
Feeling like a Christian in the Coliseum here, LOL.
someone in an earlier post warned to not use the access point "internet.fido.ca" with pay-go, why? ...and please how do you know this?
Thanks in advance
btw I do get 3g, my mistake
update : just did data refill from within WinMo but...
...noted that OperaMini in WinMo was unable to access the fido refill page, whereas IExplore did. I'm now leaning more towards this being a Fido-specific APN issue.
Next refill I will try with my Sim in an unlocked DesireZ and will report my findings. Then will try different APN settings failing that, since there seems to be several that provide a connection when there IS avilable data credit.
Hope this doesn't add too many more variables. heh.
And planning on actually talking to Fido about this. Will keep you posted.
Thx
Perhaps it's a WAP thing?
fixed - IS APN settings
APN type must be set to "default, supl, mms"
if set to anything else it won't work
....now to understand why.

Hello all, I decided that I would give the android project a run and see how it does. I installed and updated both the 2.1 Sense and 2.1 AOSP .cabs on the phone (removing one before installing the other, obviously). The problem I have is that I cannot get any data service on the phone in Android. When I turn on the wifi it works great here at home, but I cannot get any 2G or 3G data from the cell side. I have also tried doing the "Force CDMA" check box, but it made no difference. Is there something wrong that I am doing, or does data not work on AT&T yet? I was also able to get the GPS working, but without data its not very useful.
More Info:
AT&T Tilt 2 running latest Energy Rom (built on Windows Mobile 6.5.5) with Sense 2.5 (Cookie variant). Everything works great in Energy Rom and I get about 3.4-3.9 mbps downstream and 1-1.6 mbps upstream on 3G.

Force CDMA should be unchecked, your tilt2 is a GSM device. Data works on my tilt2 just fine. Have you checked the APN settings in android it should be something like this:
Name: whatever_you_want_the_name_to_be
APN: wap.cingular
Username: [email protected]
Password: cingular1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
This worked nicely. I guess I missed where they said you have to put that in, lol. Thanks for the help, now I can use Android a little more, and hopefully they get a fully functional version going here soon.
Appreciate that, it was exactly what I was looking for.

In Android go to Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
See if your providers APN Settings are there and correct, if there are no settings hit menu and add a new APN.
A full list of APN Settings can be found here http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Carrier_network_settings

I knew exactly what I have. I knew it was a GSM device, but was trying the Force CDMA to try and get it working. I had a 99.9% feeling that it wouldn't work, but gave it a try (That is how you learn. When Thomas Edison was asked about how he failed 2000 ways to make a light bulb his reply was "I didn't fail to make a light bulb, I learned 2000 ways to not make a light bulb"). You might want to think again before accusing someone of something.
Just got my phone back form being fixed (cracked screen, yayyy). Prior to fix it was rooted and everything was working great.
I get it back and had the following error: Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped.
This came up twice each time the phone was rebooted/ turned on.
So, from various searches on this forum, on androidforums, and random google results this was my process:
The phone was rooted, so I un-rooted it with SuperSU and then did a factory wipe and went through the day one set-up process again.
deleted contacts and remove all accounts
clear phone cache
clear contacts cache
restored stock firmware (phone had to be rooted, so is now rooted again)
software has just been update OTA
reinstalled stock firmware using Odin3 (used Triangle away to clear count, device status was back to normal)
That fixed my error problem, but I still had no connection to my Bell LTE network. Wifi was fine, sms good, calling good, MMS not good.
I found the APN settings on this forum and created a new one using these:
APN Name: Bell LTE
APN: pda.bell.ca
Proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
Port: 80
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.bell.ca/mms/wapenc
MMSC proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 610
APN type : <Not set>
Still didn't work, and when I restart the phone the new setting deletes itself.
So I installed two different modems as found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
I tried I747MLALH1 first and current have I747MVLLE8 installed.
Phone is now rooted again (from installing new modems). Running 4.0.4. Device status is "Modified". Mobile Network State "Disconnected".
WTF is going on here? New SIM card maybe?
Any help would be great, but you'll have to dumb it down a little :cyclops:

My default APN settings are the same as those. Now, when you hit the *back* button once from that screen it takes you back to the list of APNs (though you probably just have one called "Browser"). Is the circle on the right highlighted with a green dot or is it unchecked/ empty?
Thanks for the help
It is checked. Filled with green dot. And below Browser it says pda.bell.ca

Good for you. I found it a bit confusing at first. I had to re-read it a few times before I attempted it. I had lost my IMEI as well as DATA ability on my Roger's S3 and this page helped me! As to how I lost it....??? Some byproduct of flashing.

Problem solved.
I skimmed through the info in the link @themadproducer provided but it didn't sound like that was a solution for me
Went into the Bell store, immediate the guy saw I didn't have an LTE SIM card so he said he doubts that is the problem but atleast when it is fixed I will have 4G internet. This was the original SIM I got back in June when I bought the phone, so I guess I was running 3G and didn't noticed since it was still blazingly faster than the 3G on my Blackberry.
We ended up calling a Bell diagnosis tech and he went backdoor on my phone, when I got it reactivated after being fixed the lady at the Bell store forgot to change/ add some things.
Good as gold now! My wonderful 6GB LTE plan is finally working and I'm not wasting money on nothing!
Thanks everyone for the help and input, much appreciated.
Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to this forum; so, hello, my name's Kyle! Anyway, my friend just signed up for straight talk and cancelled her ATT plan. She got a SIM card from Straight Talk and put it in her unlocked ATT Samsung Captivate Glide (she bought it unlocked and it was unlocked before she put her ATT SIM card in). When she put the Straight Talk SIM in and went to set up the APN, there was nothing at all listed. I tried helping her, and tried many different configurations, waited 5-10 seconds before hitting the back button, tried using the save button, and still no APN (list said empty). When I rebooted her phone, it came up with the message that the network was locked (can't remember exactly what it said, but it's where you need to put in the 8 digit code, and it says 'dismiss' below it.) I dialed *#7465625# and it says network lock [yes].. My question is, what do I do? She bought it brand new, unlocked, so does it need to be rooted and unlocked? I read something about flashing the ROM or something? I don't know a whole lot about phones and rooting, ROM, and whatever else, but I learn quickly. I don't even really know the questions to ask right now. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
P.S. I believe she's running Android 2.2 right now
The phone is still SIM locked. If she is in good standing with AT&T (no money owed, no contract, or if there was a contract, she paid the terminiation fee if it was ended early), she should be able to call AT&T and ask nicely for the unlock code. She should just stress that she is the owner of the phone.

Thank you so much for your response. She did exactly that today, and had no issues with ATT on the phone. The unlock code worked, and the phone is up and running. The only problem now is that she can call and text, but the data isn't working; I'm assuming it's because of the APN. I've found some APNs to try online, but every time I go to save them it takes me back to the menu with the two existing APNs and doesn't save the one I entered. I read that I should wait 5-10 seconds and hit the back button, but that hasn't worked either Also, one more question (sorry), if she upgrades from 2.2 to gingerbread will it create any problems? Thank you again, and in advance!

My bad, haven't been on XDA in a while and just noticed this.
I personally don't have a Captivate, just cruising trying to learn something about some qwerty Andorid phones. 2.3 definitely won't cause any issues, I would actually suggest updating to it since it might solve some bugs like the one you are experiencing with creating a new APN. She should update to 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It's a marked improvement over Android 2, and the Captivate runs is swimmingly.
My wife has Straight Talk on her Captivate, and this is what settings work there:
Name: Whatever
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Everything else is set to "Not Set".
Note that if you have a "Straight Talk" SIM for the AT&T network, then there's no need to have the phone SIM unlocked. It sounds like you have a "Straight Talk" SIM for the T-Mobile network though, which requires a SIM unlock, and will unfortunately only yield EDGE speeds for data (in most of T-Mobile's network).
Hey guys I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from a friend who was on the verizon network. I, however, use tmobile but according to youtube videos and online forums Verizon's Note 3 works both GSM/CDMA without the use of a root. Well, once I acquired the phone from my friend, I was able to use it by tutorials on youtube. It worked for 2 days but now I cant use it because it says No Signal. I did steps 3 times and no luck, including a reset. Any input? Please help!
Have you checked to see if the phone was not blocked?

Yeah the phone had a bad esn but I was able to get it uplifted from the original owner. It is now ready to activate yet it can't find service. If I pop in a non active Verizon sim, You can see that there's a signal. But with a t mobile sim there's nothing. I called t mobile and they can't help me cause it isn't "their" device.
Would a root be possible? I never done that before. What are the steps to unlock the device? I'm am willing to PayPal someone with the correct answer!!!! I just want this phone to work.
Yes you will need root!
It may be as simple as editing the APN and the BuildProp to get you up & running!
I have a Note 3 900V it does work on ATT & Tmobile but to get the most out of it it will need to be on Edge, I will not get 4Glte only 4G...
Hope that helps

I had a rooted, unlocked Note 3 from Sprint (CDMA), and while the Note does support both CDMA/GSM, it is only internationally that it works on GSM. Here in the states, you are SOL if you have a Verizon or Sprint version. They WILL NOT ever work on T-Mobile/ATT. Sorry, just trying to save you the frustration that I went through. Sell the one you have, or trade it in with T-Mo's JUMP. as long as it boots, and is in good condition, they will give you $140-$200 towards a shiny new GSM Note 3. Good luck!:good:
Not that complicated.

You guys are making it harder than it is. Just change the network mode from CDMS to GSM and the T-mobile SIM will work. No need to root, unlock or anything. Even if bad esn, it will still work on GSM networks. Currently the CDMA and GSM database is not shared. Hit thanks if it works.
I did do that. I did it 20 even with a hard reset, reboot, installation of new firmware. Still got nothing.

Did you check putting the T-mobile SIM in another phone and see if it is working? It might be that since the phone was blocked on verizon, the SIM got blocked. Normally what you have to do is put the SIM in another clean phone (the SIM won't work still), call T-mobile and ask to ublock the SIM from another phone, the customer care would ublock and ask you to reboot and it would work again. If asked you can say you bought the phone on craigslist(CL) and then the seller reported it lost and so it got blocked.
I have been burnt twice with Note 3 and once GS 4 (total 3 times) from CL that now I have stopped buying from CL or swappa. There is not much you can do for people who run these scams even if you have all the proof, it wont worth the hassle. I went to cops, showed then the ad the guy put, gave the ATM receipt, photos of the bills I have handed over, the texts exchanged, asked for the video footage from HEB but nothing happened. So lessons learnt no more phones on CL.

Hard to believe you did this three times. I wouldn't have tried it even once after hearing about how people were getting scammed with no recourse, let alone more than once.

Any input? Please help!

you need to check your apn settings...
look for a software that will let you change it. I don't remember the name... from the play store..
my cousin had the Verizon note 2, we first rooted, we unlocked the sim with an app, and used a software to change the apn settings and it worked with my tmobile sim..
so you can make it work from Verizon..
sprint on the other hand, locks there phones for only international use, I do know that.
if the phone is Verizon, even if its blocked the imei, that should not even bother on another network,,

The phone is verizon.
I can't find the app. Do you know which one? I been having a hard time setting up this device to tmobile. Tmobile and Verizon can't find the problem. The settings I use is epc.t-mobile.com and fast.t-mobile.com and the same mms message.

I will speak with my cousin tomorrow to find out,
I did it with him on his computer.
we found it on another forum, it was not on xda... try googling checking for Verizon note 2 sim unlock, and Verizon apn settings change app, I believe it was on the play store.

Root is possible but some application will not work properly ( Probably )
UPDATE: Work around available using a att/tmobile compatible sim card, setting up the apn, then swapping back to straight talk verizon sim, apn settings are here to get LTE/MMS (no tether yet)
Is anyone successfully using Straight Talk Verizon Compatible Sim card with their Pixel 2 XL (Google Store purchased)?
Problem: Cannot get data on Straight Talk Verizon Sim (voice and text work fine).
Called straight talk, they wanted me to check my APN settings. However the phone will not allow me and says "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user". They said they don't see anything wrong on their end and it seems to be the phone.
Contacted Google, they said the carrier locks down the APN settings and theres nothing they can do to help, need to contact Straight Talk.
How does someone unlock the APN settings, did anyone else have success with ST/VZW Sims? Straight Talk's next idea is a new SIM (which would be sim #3 for this issue...so sounds like they dont know what to do)
I spent 2+ hours on the phone and talked to 5 people (3 calls) just to get my phone number back (first attempt got me a different phone number) and I'm lucky to be able to text and call again.
I too don't have data, but there was someone that suggested inserting a friends sim that lets them change APN and enter the changes, but swap out the sim to the ST one before saving.
Right now I'm trying to figure out why fastboot doesn't work to flash the VZ image. I suspect I need updated drivers.
this is a straight talk issue.. there is nothing else can do on this one.. check if you can ask another straight talk sim from either t-mobile or at&t if possible
i did the sim card swapping thing and got data, but only 3g. like others in the other thread said you cant type out all the setting correctly, particularly 'dun' in apn type.
once we get a stable root will this be just editable via direct entry to apn settings? this is going to be a nightmare flashing roms otherwise.
EDIT: got 4g finally. needed to use TRACFONE.VZWENTP as my APN, other APN lists have it as ACCT.TF.GW6.VZWENTP which gives 3g only. still no MMS yet though....
It's the future of android, unfortunately, in that it's an android 8.1 issue (at least Android 8.0 on 1st gen Pixel XL doesn't have this issue, but Android 8.1 on 1st gen Pixel XL does have this issue).
There is a new setting in the apns-conf.xml file (found in /system/system/etc or /system/etc), which setting is labeled "user_hidden" with options "true" and "false". All of the Verizon MVNO settings are labelled as "true", meaning that APN editing access is now restricted.
There is no way that I know of to edit this file without bootloader unlock and root.
And, it's definitely an Android issue, as Android 8.0 and earlier did not have this issue.
Speculation on my part, but this is probably Google's response to its exclusive carrier, Verizon, request that these phones not be made easy to use on much-cheaper-than-Verizon MVNOs.
I've got everything working including 50 mb down, 40 mb upload, but still can't send a picture via text. I'm using Katerina's settings (half-way down the page) here: https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/_PGJbTEuY0M/BY724wAkBwAJ
I had a Project Fi sim I swapped in to allow adding an APN.

Now that a stable root is out, do you know how to set this via editing, i changed all the user_visible and user_editable settings in the apn-conf.xml file and still cant (i dont see a user_hidden)?
Would love to figure out a non-sim card swap method to do this so i can flash roms and whatnot without constantly swapping sims.

Once I get my replacement Pixel 2 XL (yes, bad blue to yellow to pinkish screen color shift depending on angle), I will be rooting.
The approach I will take will be to adb pull the apns-conf.xml file, edit it (see below), and replace. Possible edits include:
1. apns-conf.xml file from a Pixel XL (1st gen) running 8.0 or 7.1.2; or
2. Search the stock Pixel 2 XL's apns-conf.xml file for occurrences of Verizon, and replace the "true" in user_hidden with "false"
Hopefully, one of the above will work; if not, back to drawing board. I'm sure that there is a workaround, now that stable root exists.

I didnt find any user_hidden in the file on my Pixel 2 XL (Android 8.0, not 8.1)
there is user_visible= "false" on the verizon ones, but changing that to either true or removing it completely do not seem to change anything (even after reboots)
some others have user_editable="false" but not the verizon ones.
I'd upload it here but i hacked it way up and didnt make a backup...everything still seems to work though (using the sim swap trick right now)

I might have gotten dyslexic regarding the concepts; it could have been "user_visible" and "false" instead of "user_hidden" and "true" (it's been almost a week since I looked at this issue).
Glad to hear the workaround is working for you; I will post again on this after I have gotten my new replacement Pixel 2 XL (assuming a more palatable screen).
I was able to use ADB without the SIM in to add the ST APN. However, I get stuck with it not letting me add type "dun" to it. I have LTE working, but no MMS now.

Isn't that pretty much everyone's trouble now with Straight Talk on Verizon, no MMS?
same here, data working fine, no MMS. I was going to try the apn settings i found here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73392938&postcount=29

I currently do not have 'mms' set in APN type. And it won't let me set 'dun'. also my Mobile Virtual network operator value is set to DEFF and wont let me change it. So I was hoping to try MMS (but im at work and didnt bring my other sim and sim tool).
Was hoping to manually set it now that im rooted, but i cant figure out how to do that...google and xda searches found lots of old guides from 2014 that don't seem to apply anymore.

This is true. I'm gonna end up having to be on the phone with them. Which I absolutely dread.

I have the same issue with the DUN type as well. I'm gonna try the workaround to it by using a GMS SIM that will allow that type, then putting mine back in. If it works I'll comment later.

A buddy at work heard last Friday that I was going switch to Straight Talk and decided to do the same with his iPhone 7's (last years model). Found out yesterday he spent 2 hours on the phone with them to upgrade as well. So it's not just us early Pixel adopters.
At least everything is working for them.
has anyone tried flashing the verizon emr nov update to see if this helps? i wish google would comment on this issue, its consistently in the top threads on their product forums, but no word from them.
I considered it, but fastboot doesn't work well for me with this phone. Took about 10 tries to unlock the bootloader and tried to run flash-all, but it just hangs. I have the latest Google drivers and latest platform tools.
Tried a different usb port and it worked. = /
FYI. Wiped my phone to install November update and my ACN is gone and no longer have data.
I got mms and LTE finally!!!:
used these exact settings with the sim card swap trick

I forced those with ADB (With the SIM out to get all the fields) but never got MMS even using the MMS type. I'm gonna try the SIM trick tomorrow though.
EDIT: Okay, I got it. I don't know why, but it didn't work the last time I tried it.
If you take the sim card out, in ADB you can run
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
This forces the new APN screen to come up.
I then used
Name: straight talk
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http : //mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms < remove spaces after http

and it is working fine after I put my SIM back in.
