Best app for testing screen? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, just got my GSII! What is the best app for testing screen properties as far as dead pixels, color and what not? The whites on my screen seem a little gray compared to the demo unit at the Tmo store. I want to really put it through its paces while I'm still under the remorse period. Thanks.

look for screen test in android market

dialing *#0*# will get you to the built in test software. You can do LCD tests, and test the rest of the hardware as well.

It did the same to me. All you had to do was his the back button or tap the screen.

Be advised... the "megacam" test in that menu has been found to remove the lock screen due to a bug... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311302

[Q] Is this a screen defect, check this please

With the screen off, in the upper half of the screen I notice some horizontal lines like a shadow from a circuit board behind the screen. Can someone please check this? You have to view it at the correct angle and lots of light like from a flashlight or sunlight to see it, it is hard to see. Is this normal or a defect? It doesn't effect the screen at all when it's on and you can't see it when it's on.
Can someone please check this so I know if I should return and exchange.
I see nothing on my screen. I look everywhere on the screen, even with the light shining right at it, no sight of the curcuit board on back.
You need to be in direct bright sunlight or a flashlight pointed inches from the screen and angle the screen a little forward to see it, it almost looks like RF shielding or the outline of something behind the screen. I just wanted to know if anyone else has this before I return it. Thanks for your help.
I've noticed that in mine

I've attached a picture I drew of the pattern I see (in gray) when I view the screen OFF in direct light/sunlight. Is this the pattern you are seeing or something similar? Someone please confirm, I would appreciate that very much.

I think it has to do with the digitizer, most likely normal. Don't worry about it.

It is very hard to see unless in very direct light. It needs to be direct light or you will not see it. Try it. It almost looks like the outline of this circuit of the epic touch that I attached (ignore the circled chip).
I need one more verification before I decide it's defective and exchange, anyone else has some input or can verify this for me please?
I'm leaving work soon and need to know if anyone else has this so I can exchange? Take a flashlight or go in the sun and see if you can see the line with the screen off. Anyone...please?

Thanks viper786, I guess I need to get it exchanged, hopefully the exchange unit is not defective too...
So I exchanged my phone and this screen was even worse! Not only that, in a bright room or in the sun I could not turn on the screen with the power button, it would flicker on and turn off right away. I brought it inside the sprint store and the screen worked fine again. It turned out the replacement was defective too, screen only turned on when conditions were not bright. (I think the Sprint people thought I was going nuts so I showed them and they were surprised). So I exchanged again and hopefully am good now.
This pattern makes sense, and according to ifixit the glass and panel are glued together so maybe same came out better than others. See here http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/eGp3Nsu4paJjUhcW.medium
Ok...
So I'm reading this thread, and I'm curious about the "line thing", and I'm looking for it possibly being on my phone, but I don't see it, so I re-read the OP agai.....
Wait.
This whole conversation is about something that might possibly be seen, but only when someone's screen is "off" ???
Really??
I'll say it: ** Who gives a rat's ass?
I just don't stare at my screen while it's off, with a flashlight pointed at it. (Call me crazy.)
Maybe that's why I've never noticed such an "inexcusable error" in build quality.
Related: Has anyone else noticed that the light inside your refrigerator glows for an extra second when you close the door?
I think mine does.....
I think I should return it.

Vertical lines like Tmo- S2

yeah i thought so have you guys tried the dark room test to see ?
I have the same problem where you can see traces of the keyboard on a white screen like google or something. Im wondering if sprint will replace the phone for free since this is a hardware problem???

what are your settings? it would be easier for us to try and replicate what you are seeing on our phones if you would tell us what exactly you are doing on your phone to see these lines. what brightness, what wallpaper, what app, etc..,?

I looked at the test and what they are showing I don't have that problem on mine however.
Most likely you will not have these issues with our phone. If u are having white lines or burned in images on your screen.I suggest going to the sprint store .

It's a bad display, regardless of what they tell you. I had the same exact problem on the first S2 epic touch I got. There are lots of them out there with that same problem, not sure if it's a manufacturer defect or what, but definitely not supposed to look like that. I took mine in after 3 days of use , I was NOT gonna ride with a display like that, (for me it was even worse in a dark room with low brightness, really obvious then...also had a pink tint when scrolling on the white background xda app), got a replacement and it is perfect. No dark/light lines, etc.. Everything looks great no matter what I do.
Sorry to hear cause it sucks, considering how high end this phone is..

I have two Galaxy S II's and one has no lines what so ever, but it looks very yellow and dingy. The other looks richer but it has the lines. You have blobs/streaks, you just can't see them.
When I got my first SGSII I had those pesky lines and blobs, exchanged it at a local Tmo for a new one and the issue was gone for me too.
I have looked very carefully and I can confirm, lines are non existent
Check the back to see where yours was made, maybe the korean models were defective
Maybe we'll get lucky one day and Samsung will get sued or something and issue recalls
wishful thinking...
You want proof
Here's a pic as it came on the box
When the other poster said pics, this isn't what they had in mind. They were referring to pictures with the screen on lowest brightness in a dark room viewing the blobs.jpg.
This would provide "proof" that your screen has no lines or blobs.
here's what you do. download a pure black picture. when it is night time. put that picture up on your phone and turn off the lights. take a picture with no flash. upload here.

He really doesn't need to prove anything. If he finds it perfect then. So be it. The issue is just a placebo effect.

DID YOU RUN THE blobs.jpg TEST? The black vibration test hides the flaws. A near black screen like grey shows it. Hell, I don't know who, but as someone said, opening the XDA app itself shows the flaws.
EDIT: DO YOU EVEN HAVE THE SGH-T989 PHONE? LOL.
if the XDA app splash screen has lines going through it...then yeah you have a T-mobile SGSII
Turn your brightness all the way down (not really necessary but it just shows the lines even more) and open XDA app, TADA, wood grain son.
I can confirm that the blobs and all have certainly been lessened. I just got this white model a little less than a week ago and the screen quality has vastly improved.

Exchange it, as I said, I had the same exact thing going with my S2 a couple of years back. Re-flashing the Firmware will not correct this. I know how you must feel right now; the right thing to do is exchange it, because that is certainly not normal.

Good, I'm sure you will like the Titanium Grey. I find it more professional looking than the white. The Grey looks sleeker, and less plasticky. Be sure to check the phone thoroughly before leaving the store. To make life easier, when you are in the store, type *#0*# in the dialer and make sure your phone is glitch-free before giving it the OK. The LCD Test is generally used as a Check-list. Don't forget to also check the buttons (Volume, Power, and Home Button) to make sure they are registering properly. Hope you enjoy your new phone.

Lcd test (*#0*#)
First, you will test Red, Green, and Blue, this will help distinguish any pixel anomaly (dead pixel); if there are pixels that are not consistent with that particular color, you know that is stuck/dead pixel. To go through the RGB, press red for example, look for any pixel inconsistencies, then, press the back button, and do the same for the Green, Blue, and Receiver (White).
When you arrive to white, look for dead pixels there, and also check to see if there is any tint (pink or yellow); if there is 'too much' you have the right to refuse.
There is not much you can do in vibration other than check to make sure the vibration on the phone is working, if you are able to get old of dark setting, you can search for any black lines or splotches (if there is too much mess underlying the screen, I would refuse),
In dimming you can check to make sure that the colors are consistent on both sides of the screen,
Mega cam checks to make sure camera is functioning,
Sensor confirms to make sure accelerometer / proximity / barometer/ lights / gyroscope sensor/ magnetic sensors are working, place you finger on the top sensor on front of the phone and the screen will turn green (confirms proximity is working), you can move the phone in your hand and the numbers should change accordingly for the accelerometer, barometer, lights, gyroscope, and magnetic sensor. Swirl your phone in towards you and the magnetic sensor should turn as well (the black circle),
In touch, follow the pattern as displayed on your screen, if all blocks register green, then your display is perfect for touch response,
Sleep will make sure the display turns off,
Speaker confirms that the speaker is working, I
In Subkey--press the volume buttons (up and down), power, and home buttons, the color of the display should change accordingly,
Press front cam to make sure front cam is working,
In LED the notification lights will appear and as you tap the screen the color will change accordingly (you should see red, blue, and green).
Wacom Test--take your Spen out and draw along the pattern, if all works congrats,
In Low Frequency you can go through each set of Hertz just to check whether or not the screen is functioning normally,
Skip Barcode emulator test (as long as your rear mega camera worked, disregard his step),
In Sensor Hub test face the phone down (screen on table) and the sensor should respond PASS.
Remember, you need to press the back button after completing each test in order to do a different test.

Be aware of screen defect!

So I got gs3 a week ago and loving it so far. But I started noticing the screen has some issues.
Everytime I am on blank screen with just the back light on, I notice multiple dark circles thru back light. They are about the size of peas and you can only see them in darker room. I am trying to take a picture but still not successful.. again you can not see them in normal light or when you are looking bright images. .you can only see them on blank screen with back light on. (Examples: when you start the phone and only Samsung logo during boot. Or when you go to seetings and choose lock screen, the blank area with back light on shows the defects. )
I hope you guys don't have that issue, because it does bother me when I am using phone at night..
I called tmo to replace it and hopefully new one doesn't have same problem.
Cheers,

Common on amoled screens.
Sent from my Galaxy S3 using neighbors wifi
A simple Google search would of net you the answer. Those are dead pixels almost all amoled screen have does, but if they are really really big you can definitely try to get a warranty. Only thing is your next phone will probably have it too either for better or worse. If it's not too bad I would stay with the phone, technically if you don't think about it you get past it not many times you would notice it anyway.

Screen Burning or Dead Pixels?
I think what you are referring to is screen burning. This case is very common among OLED displays, kind of how plasma TV's have burns on the screen. It's there but its not that bad since this type of technology gets it (for now....the tech is still way too new). However, it helps to not keep the same picture or whatever showing for long periods of time, as this can cause a burning outline of the picture. In this I mean, something that is displayed that doesn't change. Remember some screen may get more burned then others but it will still be there. For the reason of this burning, I'll let you search it up. If that doesn't answer your problem then let me know, but if it is dead pixels (which I dont think it is) then you might want to change it. However, your problem sounds like the common problem called burning.

This is very common in all amoled screens. Same was the case with my vibrant. Since these are only visible in a dark room with a black screen, its not that big of a problem, I imagine. It's not so much a defect as it is an aspect of the screen type. Think of it like this... if you purchase a Mac over a Windows computer, it will have aspects that you dislike that the other likely won't have have. But the same is true of the Windows device (although not likely ha)...if it is a deal breaker, avoid amoled in the future.
Have this also, even on Note 2. Especially, while watching Netflix or screen is dark

You might want to exchange that. The definately isn't burning that I am talking about. So yes, go ahead and change that out. I don't have that on my phone so it looks like a defect. Those spots almost look like bloches of some sort and looks as if something had burned underneath. That or one guy said, dead pixels (which is a definate yes for exchange).
So go exchange the product and see how it goes for you.

Well we went through thisnwith the sgs2. People found that exchanges just resulted in more phones just like this. Therw was a whole about it there also. It is a defwct in manufacturing in most oled screens for these phones. People have reported it in their note 2s also.
