Afaik ICS will be called 2.4 on phones and only 4.0 on tablets

I rarely get excited for press conferences, but I was waiting all day yesterday for this one. I think they did a amazing job with this update and I can't wait till they release the source code and we can get custom roms. An official update from Sony would be a dream lol

It's actually a unified OS, which runs ATM on 4.0.1 on phones and tablets

Ice cream Sandwich was never named 2.4. I dont now where you all got that stupid idea from.... At was allways 4.0. Allthough there are to much changes too keep it 2.x it and 3.x is allready out there so it has to be 4.0.

Yeah, it'll come for sure. But it'll be available in custom ROMs way before HTC get around to releasing it.
but it'll work same as the official 2.3 right?

Its a good thing though dude, its nice to know there are people dedicated to the cause
2.3 will come firstly as a port from the nexus, and then within 1-2 months we will see an updated G2 and sense rom, then at the end of 2020 we will see it drop on the SGS, lol lol ;P
And as soon as the gingerbread source code is released, Cy will get to work on CM7

This is just a rumor, but Phandroid has a rumor that says 2.3 could be unvieled as early as today (12/6). I don't think it'll happen, but I have my fingers crossed.
I know Moto Droids running vanilla Android and the Nexus 1 always get updates first because they're running vanilla Android. We're running Vanilla Android, so maybe we'll get to be apart of the "hahahaha, we got it before you did, sucker Sense/Motoblur/Touchwiz users!" group?

That statement is absurd. The N1 has only had ONE UPDATE!!! At least only one MAJOR update... it shipped with 2.1, it is currently 2.2 (2.2.1 is minor, hardly counts.)

That's only half of the statement, friend. The point I was trying to make was that the phones with vanilla android get the updates sooner than all the other UIs. Since we run vanilla android like the nexus 1 and the moto droids do, we should be getting 2.3 the same time they do which, historically, has been far sooner than everyone else.

G2 is not pure Google/Stock/Vanilla/Virgin whatever you want to call it.
While yes, the G2 is the closest thing to Vanilla FroYo available (aside from the Nexus Series of course, which is 100% stock), it isn't entirely pure. There is another thread pertaining to this, anyways the guesstimate is that we will get it a month or two after the Nexus S is released, which is December 16th in the United States.
BTW, I love my G2, I think it's the sickest phone available right now, but at the same time, it isn't fully stock. Read Cyanogen's blog about it.
It's going to take some time to get it just right for the G2. In any event, I can't wait!
I'm guessing Feb. 2011, although after having played with the SDK's Emulator a bit, there aren't any DRASTIC changes in Gingerbread, which means less dev. work, so who knows, maybe even sooner! Definitely after X-mas.

Oh I know we're not running 100% Vanilla, but we are running it without a 3rd party UI put over top so I'm sure we'll get it much sooner than Sense, Motoblur and Touchwiz phones do.
I think it'll be sooner than February (my money is on a January release, as the Nexus S is being released with 2.3, so 2.3's release will be the day the S comes out). It shouldn't take that long to toss together 2.3-compatible versions of the apps that makes ours different from a 100% pure device. Of course, it's all up to Tmo in the end.
I'm waiting until 2.3 update before I root. I was waiting for CM 6 stable but with 2.3 just around the corner, it's worth waiting for. I'd like to see what it's like before I go rooting around in my phone. Pun squarely intended.

[Q] Ice cream sandwich?

Any chance of DINC 2 getting it? Or even somebody willing to port it?
From what I understand every device will get one big system update, Droid 1 from eclair to gingerbread for instance so because this phone was release with froyo and they gave us gingerbread I doubt we will see ice cream sandwich, I could be wrong just based off what I have heard before

The OG Droid never received an official Gingerbread update AFAIK. Several Samsung phones have went from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread.
It all depends on the manufacturer and the carrier. Even if ICS isn't released for the Inc2 I am sure that someone will work on porting it over. However time will tell, we know so little about ICS right now and we're still almost 2 months away from an ICS phone that it is tough to make any predictions.
Knowing this Dev community, I have zero doubts. If it is launched end of October, I give it till Middle of December... That's right folks, Let's get the pool going now!!

Ice Cream Sandwich Spotted on SGSII

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_ii_running_android_ics_rom-news-3274.php
Great news! We can only hope our neglected E4GT gets some ICS love soon too.
EDIT: Apparently it's been said this is just an ICS launcher...
Still some pretty cool mods though hey! I wouldn't mind the fast switch program he had. Its the same one I got on my galaxy tab 10.1 ICS will get here eventually amd when it does I hope it changes the android expereince with lots of eye candy and fun features. Hope it really takes advantage of our 1gig ram and fast internal storage and is coded specificly for duel core cpu's. How sweet would thay be !
Our phone is neglected? It's been out for a month. Hardly time to consider it neglected.

I think they are talking in general the SGS2 has been out for a few months now it's just new for the US market.
there is a ICS launcher that looks just like that and the status bar is wrong i think its the launcher with a themed bar
I could not careless about the ICS Sprint would push to us. I want the ICS that the devs bring us.

Google WANTS Ice Cream Sandwich
It was my understanding that Google wants as many devices as possible to be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich as soon as possible to push developers in to moving their current applications to this platform and that Google basically wants previous versions including Honey Comb to go the way of the Dodo or the Dinosaur. So this could mean that we would see an upgrade fairly quickly for our devices so as to reduce fragmentation.

Someone posted this on engadget as an idication that the epic touch 4g would get ICS. Frankly I'm not sure how they determined that from the link.

All that tells us it they're working on an update (which we already knew, since they have known bugs they're trying to resolve), and it's full of placeholder text. The only version is mentions is 2.3.3, and we're on 2.3.4. So clearly not an indication of any actually useful information.

Thanks - I couldn't figure out why they thought that link had anything to do with ICS.
Of course if they really wanted a shock and awe campaign tomorrow, just imagine if the top 10 Android devices all got an update to ICS tomorrow
I would rather have to wait a bit for good ROMs than have everything the first week so we don't have to listen to the "Where's the Jelly Bean update " talk. My phone is perfect and will only get better. Its not like every CM7 nightly is perfect. It takes a lot of nightlies to get a stable release. I have been flashing all of the Nexus releases....last nights was great though...patience people

1) that is ics
2) ive kinda given up on booting ics sense on this phone as its closest cousin the inc s has a port but its way too broken to use as a daily (if more improvements are made ill get back at it)
3) we will eventually get ics sense, id imagine through a RUU leak way once it hits vzw testing servers
Do we even have a kernal to port against? I've played around with the DIS Rom, but I haven't gotten anything to boot on it.
Hope vzw leaks that ruu soon or someone builds a kernel to support porting...

i tried hacking up the cm9 ramdisk against changes that nik made to the inc s one to boot ics sense on that particular phone...but to no avail
frankly given the state of all ported ics sense roms on wvga phones, its not worth the time and effort really imo
the *only* ported one running on a .35 kernel that seems to be running well is the pyro series on the mt4g slide....but honestly its about as different a phone from ours as possible being htc (porting bullet was headache inducing)
unless one of our kernel guys really takes a run at making it work, i dont think ill personally put it any more effort just to get a semi functional rom going that can't be used on a regular basis
Sense 3.6 is really nothing special. They just made some slight improvements over 3.5 on ICS. Like fixing the browser text buttons at the top, simple things like that. Now Sense 4.0, that's where it's at. Played with it for a few minutes on my phone, and man is it nicer. Even just down to the skins, they theme way more of the system than ever before, even the keyboard finally. And the keyboard is a darker color now too, like the notification pulldown, plus the trace feature works 1000x better, and you can use it in any text field you want.

Then again, our MSM7x30 line is still considered main-line supported hardware, and it would be easier for them to just base it all of them on same Android version, since ICS is such a big difference from Gingerbread, and it ALL has to be re-written from the ground up.
Just gotta hope.
I'm really excited either way. Especially because the official updated drivers will make running ICS a possibility for me again.

I'd hope so too, but it seems as if the manufacturers aren't really interested in making wvga anymore, only qhd, and 720p now. Isn't the incredible s getting an official update first? I honestly don't think HTC is even going to have Sense 3.6 pushed to any device, it's just a little polish over 3.5, which is exactly the same as gingerbread Sense 3.5 and Sense 4.0 will be their main goal, because it's much more refined, and takes full advantage of what ics can do. In my opinion, It's the best version of sense to date.
I can post pictures of any particular part of 4.0 if you guys want me to

Firefox OS on SGH-T989

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is actually listed by Mozilla as a supported device for Firefox OS....
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Firefox_OS_build_prerequisites
... with one important note:
Samsung Galaxy S2
The only model that works is the i9100; no other variants are officially compatible. (i9100P might work, since the only change is a NFC chip added)

Does this mean our SGH-T989 will not be compatible? Has anyone actually tried Firefox OS with our model?
If someone tried it, there would probably be a thread on it somewhere. About it working on our devices, just take a step back and think, can we run i9000 roms? Our phones and the i9000 are pretty different and I doubt Mozilla would go out of their way to get a t989 and do the work themselves, since our phone isnt International and only sold in a handful or markets. Can it be made to work on our phones? Possibly, with a knowledgeable Dev doing the work, and even then who knows.
The OS as a whole seems to be still in a "beta" form so its not ready yet for the consumer so I doubt anyone would do all the work to port it over to have a half assed OS on their phones, but possibly with time, when the OS is good to go for the market someone will do the leg work to port it over to our phones, but I probably wouldnt hold my breath.

Then sooo were iOS 1,2 and 3 lol. You guys just say that because even in the 2.x days android was faaaaar lagging behind iOS in both the software AND hardware requirements. Jellybean was the first rendition to properly render GUI elements using the GPU (ICS started it, wasn't complete though) hence the notorious "android lag.". IOS was smooth from the start, powervmr .
That being said, I personally dislike Apple products, go figure

don728871 said that Android is still a Beta. In a sense, that is true. It's a work in progress that will probably not end. Ever. In that sense, it is still a beta as it also takes in data and user submitted reviews about their issues, likes, dislikes and the such to make it better and better and better.
Now, for Firefox OS, I'd consider it more of a pre-release alpha. They've got the concept down, they've got a working-ish OS for the most part but yes, like you said, it's a half assed ish OS for the most part and probably, nobody would use this as their daily driver until a stable beta (after extensive testing, updates and stuff) is released.
So for now, nothing to expect here. Let's move along shall we?
Wait a sec, let's look at iOS.
Now, yeah, people say it's lag free. True-ish for the most part...
but let's look at it from another perspective. Has iOS 6 changed in any way?
Yeah, I guess in optimization and whatnot but come on, what OS has changed so dramatically?
Evolved in such a way that it's already awesome but it just keeps getting better and better?
That, as we all know, is android. From Cupcake, we've come a long way to Jelly Bean.
That was 4 years ago. Took a while...
Now knowing how other OS's evolved,
it is now safe to assume that Firefox OS isn't going anywhere far for now.

don728871 said that Android is still a Beta.

Excellent point! Android Evolution has been gradual and drastic ... but still, when it did pick up, it was different. I think if Firefox OS can include a captivating element right from the start, it can make an impact. However, I don't see it being too radically remarkable.
