Way to toggle 3g? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to toggle 3g off in the settings and just use edge? The only option I see is to just disable data alltogether, but I don't wanna do that.
Sent from my XPERIA PLAY 4G

You can toggle between WCDMA and GSM.
WCDMA will give you "H".
GSM will alternate between 3g and Edge.
AFAIK there is no way to seperate 3g and E, although i could be wrong and hope i am because it would be useful.

i was reading this battery saving guide and i wanna make sure i did this right

well i was reading this guide and came across tip #22.
well that guide was made for the evo which is a cdma phone but when i checked my preferred network settings it was on wcdma preferred. since my G2 is a gsm phone,i changed it to "gsm auto (prl)".
was this the correct choice or should i have it set to wcdma?
thanks for any help!

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. GSM Auto (Prl) will switch between 2G and 3G based off what the tower is telling it to be on and the strength of the signal. From my experience this is the best setting for use and don't worry. Personally, I usually put my phone on 2G only, and only switch to 3G when I am going to be using the data.
WCDMA Preffered and WCDMA Only is telling the phone to hold 3G as long as possible, and if there is any 3G coverage to switch to it, or in the case of Only it will never switch off 3G, even when there is no 3G coverage available.
If you are trying to save battery GSM auto or GSM Only are your best bets, if trying to preserve a weak 3G signal for data WCDMA only, and if you are somewhere that gets decent 3G but the phone loves to switch to 2G for some odd reason, WCDMA Preferred.

[Q] Enable 2G mode?

I've finally found a toggle program (Toggle2G) that will keep the phone in 3g only when screen is off. And goes back to 4g when it is on. But, I'd like to be able to have it go into 2G mode. Is there an option to enable 2G as a selection/option?
All I have listed is:
WCDMA
GSM
WCDMA
GSM auto
CDMA auto
CDMA Only
EvDo Only
GSM/CDMA auto
So, any way to get 2G as a selection and save some battery when device screen is off?
Verizon is a CDMA carrier, no GSM sir.
I had the same selections on my GSM Nexus, which obviously do not have EvDo and CDMA.

Is there a network mode to toggle 2G/4G on T-Mobile?

Wondering if there is a way in the network settings to force 2G ONLY or 4G?
WDCMA Preferred
GSM Only
Something like that?
Only way is dialing *#*#4636#*#*
And selecting it there.

This app is much faster than dialing:

I use it all the time to quickly change from HSPA to EDGE.
You're welcome.

How do you set 3G data only, dont want to use LTE to safe battery life.

In mobile networks switch network mode to wcdma only.
Edit: could be hspa only, depends on your model.
4g is not lte by the way. If youre on lte it says lte not 4g
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
lte is 4g on most roms that I have seen. Although I never used the lt28at just the lt28i and lt28h where hsdpa+ is called h+ and lte is called 4g.
There should be a toggle that you can download that will be able to click 2g 3g or 4g. I know on miui there is a toggle for that.
If you're using a Lt28at like me, you can't toggle anything but LTE. SInce the boot loader is locked it will give you the option to pick a different frequency, but will automatically revert back to LTE. Sucks.
The version i have only give me LTE data, or no data at all.
It is locked to rogers.
Can it be changed so i can use 3G only?

No. Your boot loader is most likely locked also. You can only choose LTE. The only other option is to find the APN setting for 3G and enter it in your mobile networks and choose it. It will only use 3G but your phone will always search for LTE by default. You will save some battery by going that route. I don't know what the 3G apn for Rogers would be, however or if there is one. AT&T has a separate apn for LTE and 3G. Maybe someone else here knows more...
Yea, i just found out this can not be unlock... thinking android can be unlock easily since my last 2 phones can do it.
I will find the 3g apn.
Hopefully someone can find a way to unlock it and use other rom..

[Q] Service Menu for data.

On my GS3 I used to be able to type in *#*#4693#*#* and it would open a menu where I could toggle my data from 2g to 3g to LTE or any other option. I think it was called a service menu.
Now on my GN2 I can't get that menu. I have seen a thread that lists all the secret codes but I can't find the one that allows me to toggle from 2g to 3g and vice versa. I don't want to use an app to do this.
Does anybody know the code?
You should just be able to do it in the mobile data menu

No, I can't. I know you can switch from LTE to 3G or turn off data. I can switch from GSM only to LTE/GSM/WCDMA or WCDMA only.
That's not what I'm looking for, I'm looking to switch from 2G to 3G and back. I used to be able to do it in the INFO service menu.
