[Q] Dodgy phone or dodgy car charger?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem..
Everytime I connect a car charger, it charges for a second then disconnects itself, the charger is still plugged in, and the engine is running. The red light on the charger is on too. I'm not saying this is a ROM problem or anything at all, but its the second charger I've had that does this, I don't suppose anybody knows a fix if it happens on other devices too?

Is this an official HTC charger?
I know it sounds silly, but most cheap unbranded car chargers cause all sorts of problems. It's usually that they don't short the two data pins, so that the phone thinks it's plugged into a PC. It will then only charge at half rate (500mA) in line with usb standards.
Also, the charger may not even be able to handle a 500mA output, which would suggest why your phones sees the charger, measures the output, sees it as insufficient, and stops the charging. Is there a sticker on the charger starting current output? They can still be misleading though.
An official HTC car charger (just like the mains wall charger) will have it's data pins sorted out. The phone will detect this, and switch to mains charging mode, and draw the full 1000mA. You may have noticed that your phone will charge twice as fast off a mains wall charger than it will from being plugged into a computers usb port.
Trust me I've thrown out about 3 of the cheap ones! Even charging at 500mA, your phone will still not be getting enough juice to do google maps navigation with GPS.

It's a cheap eBay one, but I've bought from the company in the past...when I had an iPhone And it worked perfectly. The first charger had a label saying it's max was 500mA. That lasted about 20 minutes..Need it so much more recently because of my battery drain problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996938.
I had no idea HTC sold official ones (seems I lack common sense), will give them a go, at least then I'll get a decent warranty if it doesn't work...

If its a USB charger try a different USB lead. When my Desire arrived brand new the lead would only work properly when I bent the lead round the back of the phone otherwise it would start a charge (LED would light up red, phone says charging) but the battery % would never get any higher. Bought a new official HTC lead and problem solved.

Solution for Nitro HD car charger problem

Hello all. New member to your forum but a Senior techie here. For anyone having the issue with the car charger not keeping up with the discharge of the battery, the problem is that car chargers make the Nitro think it is plugged into a PC's USB port. When this happens, the internal regulator only allows about half of the chargers current to charge the battery. The AC wall charger has pins 2&3 shorted which tells the Nitro it's plugged into an AC charger and allow full current from the charger.
I have a USB cable adapter I made with pins 2&3 shorted that I tested and have the results in the below images. With the Nitro plugged directly into the car charger without my custom adapter (pins 2&3 shorted) you can see in the first image the battery status is listed as "Charging (USB)". Doing nothing more than keeping the screen on for 5 minutes, you can see in the second image, that the battery charger was not able to raise the battery level at all from 39%. I then plugged in my shorted adapter between the phone and the same car charger and the battery status changed to "Charging (AC)" as you can see in the third image. I performed the same test and this time the same car charger was able to raise the battery from 39% to 43% in 5 minutes, again with the screen kept on as shown in the fourth image.
There are threads on this board under other phones about the USB Car charging issue and how to make a shorted cable. I would however recommend taking an extra cable and soldering together the conductors for pins 2&3 (usually white and green) instead of just using a piece of foil as others have done in the past. Just remember, the shorted cable can only be used for charging, not data syncing. Happy modding...

Hey guys, I know this is kind of a dead thread, but...
Can anyone confirm that the cable at:

will work to "A/C" charge my nitro HD. It seems from looking around on the forums that it will, but I have never seen a confirmation.

Rated at 950mA and there's customer review confirmation that this charger will show up as "Charging A/C". I just bought 2.

Anyway, I decided to go with the brando cable. I really hope it works as expected, otherwise I'll be using a janky electrical-taped hacked up wire. Or order a mini-micro adapter...

That Brando cable looks fine, I'd be all over it too if it were cheaper.
As to be being all over this Forum?...HELL YEAH! I like backing the sleeper/underdog. When the Nexus One first came out by no means was it a "hit", but it sure as hell was a sleeper/underdog! Now though, the Galaxy Nexus is going to be the me-too phone so I didn't go that route.

The upside of the brando cable is that it has a switch to make it a data cable or a charging cable. So I can keep it with me and decide to either charge slowly or quickly.

Don't forget, the cable can only put through, what the adapter it's plugged into provides. If the adapter is rated =<500mA output then the extra features of the cable are a moot point.
I had the Car Dock for my Nexus One, that monster was rated at 2A! Believe me when I say that phone got HOT when you were doing Nav with it plugged it!...Now THAT'S a rapid charger! A 10min ride to the store (while phone idle, screen off) and that thing would top-off my phone that was at 75%.

I have this car USB adapter.
The top port is rated at 2.1 amps so as to be able to charge an Ipad.
I'm prepared

Anyone having issues with the factory charger?

When I set my 360 on the charger, it wont charge. I have to unplug the charger, plug it back in, then it will work. Every day.. every time I put it on, it wont work until I do the steps mentioned previously.

I'm having the same sort of issues. I haven't tried unplugging the charger. I just put it in place and I'd it doesn't start to charge remove and replace. I tried the Droid Turbo charger wall wart on the and it doesn't work at all.

I have the same issue on occasion...extremely annoying when you don't notice it until you wake up to a dead 360 in the morning! Add that to the massive battery drain since the last Android Wear update and I'm charging twice a day now!

I am having an issue with my charger and it appears the port on the dock is broken and I have only had it for a month... :/

I had that issue a while back with a cheap ebay charger. Not with the moto charger. pretty sure it's defective somehow

Can anyone help me out with Tab Pro 8.4 Battery problem?

Ok, well...
I'm Korean, and I've searched almost every Korean tablet forums, yet can't find the reason :crying:
So I came to here, XDA.
The problem is, my Tab Pro 8.4 won't charge at all.
It's looks like an usual charging problem of Tab Pro 8.4, however, mine's little bit different.
With the charger plugged in and tablet is on, I can see the lighting shape on the battery icon at the status bar (which appears the charger is plugged in) ,
but no matter how long I charge the tablet, it's 0% and turn off after like...10 secs.
With the charger plugged in and tablet is off, I can see the battery pic appears on the middle of the black screen.
BUT, like the former situation, no matter how long I charge the tablet, I turn it on and it dies quickly.
SO, my problem is this, and i can't find a tiny reason why my tablet got (or how to fix) this battery problem.
Never seen a battery problem like I have right now.
I got several ideas about this. (Hope this will help you to fix my situation )
1. My tablet's rom is not pure. (But not rooted.)
As far as I remember, I applied the Ukrainian version about 3 weeks before.
Is it possible the this is the reason?
If so, wiping the original rom and applying the new one would help me?
2. Is it possible that the battery and the tablet connection got a problem?
If so, open it by myself and re-positioning the battery would help me?
3. The battery charger part might be damaged.
Then it leaves me the one option {GO TO THE SERVICE CENTER} ?
4. well...not 4.
have no idea.
Using same charger which is official SAMSUNG's.
I will keep monitoring this thread.

I just tested download mod.
With the charger is plugged in, it's working.

to see if the charger is bad, fully shut tablet down and then try to plug the tablet into a USB port on a computer and wait about 8 hours, then unplug it and see if the tablet holds any charge (battery might still be low but it should have enough charge to run awhile), if above works then it means you need another wall charger (5v 2.1A).
if it still just powers off or dies then it means the battery is bad or not connected or something else is wrong with it.
1. Try another USB cable
2. Try another 5v 2.1A wall charger
3. Try charging on a PC
4. replace battery.

To verify your tablet is charging, you need this little tool

Current should be 1.5 to 1.7 Amps, voltage should be 5 to 5.2 V
If the charging current is under 1.5 A, you should change different USB cable or adapter
If cable and adapter are fine, the next is charging port, it's easy to replace if your is defective.
Never use usb port on computer to charge, it only supply 0.5 A and your tablet needs at least 2 Amps for charging properly.
These are basic steps you need to do, without basic information I cannot tell what is wrong with your tablet: not charging or bad battery, or the worst: bad main board.
The one you have to verify: your tablet is drawing normal charging current around 1.5 to 1.7 Amps when plugged in. You can not troubleshoot problem just by guessing.
The most common problem of Samsung tablets are cracked Battery connector, a simple re-solder will fix the charging problem.
There are many unknowns, you have to eliminate charger, usb cable, usb charging port as the source of problem first. Then next look for battery or battery connector.
Otherwise, you will confuse yourself and others what causing the problem. Elimination is the key to figure out problem from many unknowns, one by one at a time. There's no short cut , otherwise, you can not figure out where the problem comes from.
I see many users send their tablets for service and the problem just comes from a bad cable because they have no idea what's wrong with their tablets.

You can charge from a computer fine just as long as the tablet is fully shutdown first (so you see the battery icon scrolling), this will ensure the 500ma will go directly to the battery and not running the tablet and os, it will charge very slowly but it will eventually reach 100% as nothing is drawing power from the battery to drain it (though I would only charge to 20%, to see if it holds a charge), however this method is just for diagnosing if the charger is bad and have no current alternatives, obviously this should not be a long term solution and never used when the tablet is running, but rather to see if the battery can hold any charge at all.
if you have another 5v 1+A charger laying around then use that instead., if the charger is the problem you can pick them up pretty cheap off ebay (make sure the hallmark icons and model number match to avoid knockoffs)

To see what is wrong with charging problem, you should never use wrong charger like 5V, 1 A or a USB port on computer. If using a 5V, 2A charger and a correct USB , any reading is under 1.5 A, there is something wrong with charger, or USB cable, or USB charging port, or battery connector. Even wrong USB cable, the one has only max of 1A, also is the source of slow charging.

His issue is not with slow charging, it was as soon as he unplugged it the tablet instantly powered off, in this case if the battery is 100% dead then damage is already done and once a lithium battery is completely discharged then most likely no charger whatever the mA is will bring it back...this is why I was saying to charge it from whatever source since you need to get a charge into the battery before it's irreversible damage.
However after re-reading ops post I think it's safe to rule out the charger as the problem because he said he could run the tablet with it plugged in (so that means the Charger is providing enough power to run the tablet) according to my mA reader this alone is around 500-700mA in standard use / full brightness
This also mean we can rule out a bad Micro USB port on the tablet since a broken one wouldn't allow power to the tablet.
the problem likely lies with a bad battery or a bad battery connection, the probably only option at this point would be for him to have samsung service it or take the chance to replace the battery.
(BTW I have all the tools nessasary and I know what can and can't charge this tablet)
Yes I know it needs a 2.1a charger to charge it while it's actively running since a good portion of that power will go into running the tablet and LCD if needed, it does not need a 2.1A charger when it is powered off and 500mA to 2.1mA will still charge it.

Three is a thread here talking about reseating the battery. Look it up. That may help.

Agree with otyg. I recently had a similar problem. My galaxy tab s 8.4 would power off immediately after being removed from power. It would register as having 100% charge while turned off, but once powered on, the tablet would show 4% charged or lower. Another thread on this site mentioned that the battery contacts on the motherboard have cracked for some owners creating symptoms like ours. I resolved the issue by applying a low resistance conductive adhesive to the cracked pins linking the battery to the motherboard. If this happens to be your problem be very careful because there are other contacts next to the battery pins. Good luck!

Sony Smartwatch 3 won't charge.

Hi, Last night I was playing with my new charging dock that I 3D printed and all of a sudden my SW3 stopped charging. The LED on the charging brick blinked a couple of times and that's all she wrote. I tried different cables, different charging bricks and nothing seems to work. I had about 20% of battery power left so I just turned of my SW3 to conserve it a bit. Any ideas?

Would love to see what your charging dock looks like! anyway, have you tried charging from a computer's USB port or directly from a wall outlet with a phone charger? Hope it isn't a hardware problem...

You can also charge when it is off.

I tried all these options, I think that my charger fried the watch charging circuitry. I bought a second one off craigslist yesterday and charged it in the car on my way home. Once I got home I plugged it into the same charger and now I can't charge the new watch either. I'm going to be forced to file a equipment warranty claim from the charging station manufacturer and hope for the best.
