[Q] Overclocking with temp root - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've been browsing this forum a while now, and I've used the search alot, but can't really find what I'm looking for. I'm trying to temp root my phone so that I can overclock it using SetCPU. I'm not going for perm root yet, since I don't have ANY experience with it and I don't have a spare phone (and kinda need this for my internship).
I'm using stock Desire Z with Android 2.3.3. I already tried visionary+, but this doesn't work. So is there any way (like the visionary app) to temp root my phone so that SetCPU will work?
Thnx

Yes, there is temp root, but no you won't be able to overclock. Just installing SetCPU doesn't enable it. Your clock speed will be limited because you'll still be operating on the stock kernel.
If you're interested in rooting, read through the HTC Vision Wiki, and do your research. This will give you the info and steps necessary to downgrade, root, and re-upgrade to pre-rooted 2.3. At this point, you'll be able to install a custom ROM (and subsequently a custom kernel) that will allow you to OC to your heart's content.
Just do your research before you try anything, and ask questions about confusing steps BEFORE you begin. If you take your time and pay attention to what you're doing, there is a very low chance that you'll brick your device. Don't be worried about it.

I thought I read somewhere that overclocking to 1GHz was possible with a stock system? Or is that info outdated?
And thanks for the quick reply

Both rooted stock 2.2 and pre-rooted 2.3 ROMs I have can't be overclocked above 806mhz.
FWIW overclocking the stock ROM to 1ghz will still give you slower performance than just running CM7 at 800mhz.

Thnx for answers.
You actually answered my next question aswell, because I did want to use a custom ROM at some point and have been looking for a build that looks like a standard Android build, withouth HTC/Samsung/whatever own skin on top of it, and CM7 does look pretty nice.

But, to be able to flash a custom ROM, you need to do a perma rooot

I know. And I already said in my first post that I dont want to perma root YET
But now that I know that I need a diff kernel in order to OC, perma root is comming closer and closer..

Yes CM7 is AOSP-based (stock), but has lots of nice improvements.
If you want reallly stock android, there are other builds that have no extras. I'd recommend cm7 though, its very nice.

Which Root Method/ROM is right for me?

Hello Guys,
I wanted to take a moment of your times to ask a very simple question. I have done a lot of reading here, but there is just simply too much information here to be 100% certain about things. So, I wanted to avail your expert knowledge to find out the best Root Method and best ROM for my needs. I will list them below, so that you guys may make some advice to me:
Root Requirements:
I am looking for a full Root (NAND included) on Android 2.2, along with Recovery to flash custom ROMs. I will be interested in backing up as well, more specifically NAND backup, however, I do not know much about its full use or how to do it and what it restores and etc.
Information (what I am on right now):
Firmware version: 2.1
Build number: 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys
Software number: 1.47.651.1
ROM Requirements:
I am basically looking for the LATEST, MOST STABLE, OFFICIAL ROM for Froyo with the latest HTC Updates, along with Sense. All that of course, with full-root, if possible. So the closest thing to the official update from HTC with full root access basically and minimal modifications.
Additionally desired:
Being able to delete or uninstall the apps that I don't want, and the Camera updates to beat the 30 fps limitation.
Sorry for sounding too demanding guys, but I am merely requesting for your guidance to point me in the right direction/confirm some of the things that I have read. Please treat me as an extreme Noob as well.
I thank you for all your patience and look forward to your responses. Thank you and have a nice day.

Sorry Sir. Mods, can you move this thread please? Thank you... sorry guys!
Not trying to flame or anything but search and you shall find, im pretty sure the root method you should use has root ota 1.47 in the name. Also roms are personal preferences. Once you get rooted try them all and see what you like best that's part of the fun. Good luck
Use Simpleroot

Flash SteelH's rooted stock Froyo rom with Netarchy latest kernel.

Also wrong section, post in QA next time
As every one else suggests, simple root ota edition & amon ra's recovery, which is an option in simple root is a good start, as far as roms you really need to just flash a few for yourself to see which flavor you prefer, go get you something like myback up pro or titanium once your rooted, if your concerned about your apps/setup. There are several good stock roms out there to try...myself, I love me some evio, but it's all a matter of personal preference, trial & error, you gotta try out a few to see what really works for ya...
Sent from my phone.
When deciding what ROM, you can look at my sig for comparison charts of what features each ROM has. To get fps unlock you need to have a custom kernel, some ROMs have it included while others give download links to kernels that work for their ROM. Check out the chart and if you have any questions just post on my thread(also linked in my sig).

Why install/flash custom ROM?

I had HTC HD2 and I installed Android on it, but now I have HTC DHD and android is already build in and it runs grate.
Why install/flash custom ROM?
What are pros and coins?
To name some advantages;
Full control over the phone (root)
Remove bloatware (Default apps the come shipped with the phone / carrier applications)
Themes
Overclocking / Underclocking
Get updates before your region (2.3)
Many more advantages...
Only con i can think of is you have to revert anything if you were to send it in for repairs etc.
Cons..... if you don't read and follow the directions correctly, you could brick your device.
Pros...... overclocking, backup/restore, better battery life, more customisation, access to more apps, faster updates to new android versions, debranding......

And seems like that isn't really the case anymore. Someone (mike19xx from the forums) sent in their DHD with custom rom for repair and got it back without any problems.
Thanks for replays!
Please sugest me some good ROM. And where better save apps on SD or phone memory.
And also please recommend some apps for productivity.

Non-sense, cyanogenmod7 all the way.
Sense, leedroid 2.2.2
Search the themes and apps threads for other stuff like add-ons.

Android Revolution HD 3.2 or 4 (If you want gingerbread)
Although im thinking about CM7 unsure yet
It depends on your needs. On the rom threads (or even sites) you can usually find the features and you should consider yourself to think about if it's senseful for you. If you are just a "normal user" who probably doesn't need things like root access or overclocking and extra possibilities like ftp, ssh, vnc, etc. servers with full access it may not be so convincing for you. Usually you get a good speed improvement from several roms and as said newer version without branding. But also bugs you won't have in stock roms (but maybe other bugs from stock remain then ) as developing such things is never "perfect".
An important fact could be that you can only backup anything properly with root access afaik. But this should also be possible with altered stock roms.
Generally you get yourself some freedom I would say.
For the roms: You should do some nandroid backups using clockwork recovery and then simply switch by backing up, installing/restoring and then compare what you like more.

Although, if you are very happy with how your phone behaves, you might want to think again if you really want to flash a custom rom.
Pros are as mentioned in above posts. Cons: you might brick your phone.
In any case, if you root / s-off your phone, you will have a device that is enabled for the future. If HTC decides not to update your device to the latest android version, you will be able to do so yourself if a dev has cooked it to be used with DHD.
You never know if HTC will be able to fix all exploits in future OTA updates(unlikely, but still).

I believe the chances of bricking your phone is quite narrow.
I almost bricked my phone, by trying to install "FULL WIPE" via ROM Manager ( ROM manager boots into CWM and runs the ZIP and reboots it ) .
For those who dont know, FULL WIPE zip will clear out all traces of ROM on your system. Essentially, I or rather ROM Manager rebooted my phone without having any ROM installed.
But thankfully a simple battery pull was all that was needed to fix it. I was able to get back to the CWM, from where I installed the new ROM, and everything was working as "desired"
If you're happy with your current stockrom and don't mastrubate on quadrant scores to impress your co-workers or friends on birthday party......stay on stock, my 2 cents

Haha, that's exaggerating it a bit mate!
Not everyone who uses custom ROMs are concerned with superficial benchmark scores! Most will agree they don't relate to real life performance.
The reason I use custom ROMs are thus:
1/ Increased stability
2/ Bug fixes
3/ Increased REAL LIFE performance
4/ Superior battery life
5/ Full customisation
6/ Added features
HTC makes some great phones, but XDA Developers make then way better

true, but If I read some replies here on XDA it makes you think
Humm, have you even tried a custom rom?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yes tried ARHD (3.0, 3.1, 3.2), I went back to stock as there where all little issue's with it, that are not in stock.
I need a stable, trustworty platform, which you don't get by pressing the last juice out of the phone hardware. I think the devs do great work though, guess it is just not for all of us
Now I stop, cause this is NOT on topic anymore. Bottomline if you're happy with your phone the way it is from factory (topic starter), then there is no need to use a custom rom
I use a near stock, deodexed rom. Only thing I have gained is root and the ability to add themes, such as the funky power control widgets. I have used other roms in the past but there are from time to time issues if the rom has been modified too much.

Should I, Shouldn't I - Custom Rom

Hey everyone,
I have bought myself a Galaxy S 2 which is brilliant and has taken over from my Desire as my main device, but this has led me to the question, is it worth rooting my Desire and playing with custom roms now I do not have to rely on it as my main device?
It is on Orange, android 2.2, and if I mess it up, I suppose I could just drop it in a pool of water and return it on insurance lol
Reason I ask is because all the rooting threads confuse the crap out of me, but I have always been interested in messing around and seeing just what this phone is capable of or just what could be done to speed it up or have it looking super cool with new user experience.
I suppose the main question is, can you customise the phone to the same level without rooting and custom roms, and is it really that much better when rooted?
Any opinions are very welcome.
Also, it is an SLCD, orange branded but network unlocked using the CD method I found on the forums. Is there anything I need to know about my phone, before I root, if I decide to root.
Anyway, thanks for any and all opinions or help on this.
Biffy.
Root and s-off if you want to be able to to anything.
After that you have to chose the rom ... The most difficult !
I currently use LeeDroiD 3.0.8.2 (GB + sense) in A2SD+ version. Fast, stable and enough features inside for me.
to me installing custom rom is more because of curiousity. I learned quite a lot because of this custom roms thingie, since i was too worried to try it and done a LOT of reading here and there. until now, lol
Thanks for the replies So do you guys think that the custom roms improve the phone? If not improve, is it fun again playing with the phone when you've installed a rom?
I'd love to install something with a new version of sense to see what it's like, as playing with the Desire HD in a shop, it seemed really good.
Anyway cheers for the replies I'm gonna read more about rooting..
Cheers.
I was also worried in the beginning but I read all the tutorials on forum and it is very easy to put custom ROM. Also I'm using 2.1+3.0 sense and it is very nice + ROM is fast and stable
start from here

Brilliant Thanks I'll take a look there as that sounds perfect
Biff.
Just done Unrevolked and phone is in ClockworkMod Recovery now, seems it is rooted lol.
I will leave it there and read more see what else I can do or what my next step is...
Ok, i'm getting excited now, as i've rooted and S-Off'd my phone now, and have gparted ready to sort out the SDCARD
This is where i'm stuck as I don't know which ROM to use, although I believe a gingersense (If I can convince myself I don't want to use camera?) or a HD Rom would be best for me to try.
I think the AOSP? Stock android roms are a little .. shall we say .. ugly, and the MIUI (iphoneish) ones are too iphoney.
So what do you guys reckon are the best gingersense or HD roms about?
Cheers for all the posts and suggestions, it's going well I think
Biff.
I'm using this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113070
it's fast and stable, cheers
Awesome, that one looks great i'll see if I can get it installed later.
Tried to install Cyanogenmod 7 CM1 through ROM manager, but I am getting what I believe is referred to in the trade as a boot loop lol
Will have a play to sort it out

[Q] Just want a stable phone, thats all...

Hi guys, I am a BASIC android user with BASIC phone needs. Unfortunately I own a HTC Desire Z with Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) and the very crapy HTC Sense 2.1 thats keeps on slowing down the phone and mostly rendering it beyond the point of regular usage.
I want the cleanest possible, fully functioning Android version available, like on Nexus phones. Just a plain, simple, clean and basic Android version. No need for overclocking, Sense crap, MIUI interfaces or other spectaculair may-work-may-not-work-brick-my-phone stuff, just a simple working smartphone, you can call with, send text messages with, Viber, Skype or Whatsapp with. You know, kinda like old people do with the phone
So 2 questions:
1. Which version would you guys recommend as being the cleanest one available on the forum?
2. How on earth do I get there? I have basic/bit advanced knowledge about rooting phones, Kernels, radio versions, etc, but this HTC phone is beyond me. Should I first root it, then CID Unlock/ s-Off it, do I first have to downgrade it to Froyo, etc etc etc. I know the easiest answer is RTFM, or use the search function on this forum first, but with my basic knowledge I cant seem to figure it out with the tons and tons of information thats out there on the forum.
So please, a few pointers, short first-this-then-that guidelines, and I'm sure I will get there.
Have a great weekend, DaMO
First of all, you're in the wrong section.
Second : The best rom without any trouble is this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242480
If you want more feature : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Both are very stable. Very fast. No problem at all.
But I have to say, these time, most of recent roms are pretty reliable.
Many thanks, overdose. As you are a mod, just move it to the right section.
And like I said, kind of a noob. So the post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242480 is kind of a question mark for me. As far as I understand, this release is based on a CM7 Rom, with added features? And do I only need the ILWT CM7 Kernel, or also the ILWT Deamon? What is a Deamon???!?? and why would I need it? Found a downgrade/upgrade guide from Strawmetal, hopefully it won't brick my phone and I will be able to upgrade to a normal workeable ROM.
Again, many many thanks, and tonight I will either have a useless paper weight, or a normally functioning phone

The deamon allow you to control overclocking, voltage, I/O, governors.
Witch you dont need, if you dont want to play with it.
i.e mimicry's already set to 1000 mhz cpu. You dont need to touch anything if you're satisfied with this cpu speed.
It's hard to find a complete guide for newbes. Back in years, I remember that I had to look at multiple thread to be sure how to root/backup/flash and make sure not to brick.
The major difference between the two (I was using Mimicry myself for the longest time, but I'm currently testing the Flinny Jellybean build) is one is Gingerbread (CM7) and the other is Ice cream sandwich. So if you're find with android OS 2.3, you will for the most part have the most compatibility with the phone's hardware (since all the drivers are avail), and will run better on the phone. But Mimicry will give you the features of ICS (4.0.x), but may lack in some areas like camera capabilities with 3rd party apps such as instagram (which is fixed in the jellybean rom I'm currently using).
But as a "basic" user, I think sticking with gingerbread will do you just fine.
I personally found this guide most useful and very easy to follow. The only problem might be that it needs adb and the respective drivers, but installing it should not be too difficult.
My favourite ROM, when it comes to speed and stability, is the "cm-7.2.0-vision.zip" found here. It might have some extras, but compared to everything else I tried (and I tried a lot), it worked like a charm.
Hello guys, many many thanks for all your advice. After about a day of work, I have a fully functioning Desire Z, with cyanogen 7.2.0 release. I had some difficulties getting there ( a faulty PC10IMG file, a bootloop after finally flasing the CM zip that seemed endless, a bootloader that gave up on me, etc), but learned a lot along the way. My conclusion: as enthusiastic and capable all the people at XDA are, nothing beats the official manufacterers release of the software. Sure, here and there also original roms have glitches and FC's, but basically everything works the way it should work, all the drivers are present and mostly updated. So my motto is: if it aint broken, dont mess with it

Which guild did you end up using? I found the one here too convoluted to take a chance on bricking my phone. Like it says to download ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0 and 5.8...well which is it? The cyanogenmod wiki instructions are easier to follow but it looks like they stopped developing at gingerbread which I already have. What I did was get the unlock code from HTC and then used busybox to install su for root access.
If CyanogenMod ever comes out with a more current version, I may give it a try but I am guessing they are only going to develop for the latest phones.

Custom ROMs Ror HTC One V (Differences, Bugs, Info)

custom ROMs for HTC one V (differences, bugs, info)
Hello,
I am new to this site, and new to this thing, but I am interested to update my HTC one V with some custom ROM (jellybean or higher) and I wanna know some info about which one is the most stable and popular one, with no bugs or trivial bugs.. It is frustrating because they are plenty of ROMs and kernels here.. and what is the difference between AOSP and AOKP version? somewhere I read that aokp is less stable but better... I actually want features included RAM and CPU clocking, because this is the coolest thing in these custom ROMs.. :cyclops:
- I have HTC one V (GSM) rooted and bootloader unlocked
- I have CWM recovery 6.0.3.3 installed
- I have official android v4.0.3
so which ROM you guys prefer to me and which kernel that goes along? and is my CWM version OK or I need other one?.. I really want to get more of this phone than I am getting now.. it's a really nice phone but it's a bit lazy when operating tasks, so it's not for impatient users
I am new to this, but I somehow succeeded to root my V, thanks for detailed instructions on this site, so thanks to you guys ..now I just have to update my ROM, and I will be more than happy
Get kitkat and you'll be happy
It's really fast, mostly bug free and gets security updates...
I use lollipop personally and I like material design to much to go back.

You can't (you really can't) brick your phone by installing a recovery, rom and a kernel.
It's really easy. If your still using the stock rom (rooted or not), you first have to unlock your bootloader. This is important because with a locked bootloader you can't overwrite to parts of your storage.
Just search for some guides (like this one) and only do the unlocking of the bootloader, not the rooting.
After unlocking the bootloader, flash a custom recovery (this is the newest version of TWRP, a popular recovery).
Then you reboot into the recovery and install any custom rom you like. Then you reboot into the bootloader again and flash the kernel for this rom, because the recovery can't do this.
And now you're finished. Just reboot and you'll have your new system.
If you need help with something, just use some guides here in the forum, those things have been explained thousands of times
Oh, and don't forget doing a backup of your data before. It will be deleted when installing the rom.
By the way: "rooting" means gaining root access on your system by using some vulnerability in the system. Root access is a bit like the admin user on windows, it can do everything and has no limits. But rooting only affects your current rom and is only needed in the stock rom. Most custom roms already have root access enabled.
can with only TWRP flash CyanogenMod 11? I see in the post is written that need latest TWRP to flash this ROM..
but I have already CWM recovery 6.0.3.3 installed. So shall I delete it? What is the difference between TWRP and CWM?

TWRP has much more features and has touch support.
Yes, you need twrp, because it's much newer and has selinux support, which is required for installing.
Install this TWRP by rebooting into bootloader and flashing with: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (replace recovery.img with the image you want to flash.

I have used dedicated kernel in zip, it is ok without issue, pretty fast, running for a day now.
btw... I was just considering if I could push the clock of CPU a bit more.. is it possible or it's already done OCed with this kernel? ...is there some app for that maybe?

If you enable developer options you get a performance settings menu in the settings. There you see the kernel is overclocked to 1200 MHz by default, which is still ok on most devices. For my phone it's no problem to go up to 2 GHz, but 1200 MHz is enough for me.
all good, but MMS messages don't work, can't download them.
is this a bug in CM11?
