Afternoon all, quick question I can only find mixed answers on:
I am using Go SMS and would like to free up RAM by removing/freezing stock SMS. Does it make a difference whether it's uninstalled or frozen?
(Of course, I know the difference between the two functions but am wondering if somehow one or the other can have adverse effects on messaging.)
I would like to test it myself but am hoping the answer already exists - unfortunately I can't wait around all day to test if it works correctly.
Go SMS needs the stock app to function, in fact I believe all of them need the stock app. Sucks, but that's how it works.

I think this is true, because all the 3rd party apps do is let the SMS app take in the messages, then grab them and re-display.
Go SMS actually has a setting for stock sms un- installed, its under important tips in the advanced settings. The ROM I use actually has an option to not install the stock one from the off. (ILWT CM7) although I'd imagine a sense ROM might be tricky.

The most popular are definetly Gosms and Handcent; but, apparently there was a trojan found in the most recent release of Gosms. I am currently using the stock messenger because of its simplicity (don't like a messy interface) and I want to change. Handcent and Gosms are both too complicated for me, sure I like options but not 1000+ options. What's a simple, fast, and good messenger app that uses very little ram (preferably less than stock). Yes I know, you don't need to worry about ram with android;however, I worry about it regardless.
I'm using stock for now. Hopefully go SMS fixes real or false positive Trojan. Handcent 4.0 suppose to be coming out guess I'll be trying that soon.

I used to use GoSMS on my HTC phones since stock HTC messaging looks like no one tried on it lol, but on this one I'm definitely sticking to the stock messaging app.
I personally prefer hand cent been using it since mytouch 3g days

Im still running stock

I use ChompSMS. I tried Handcent and GoSMS. I didn't like them.
Anyone else have an issue with the stock messaging app -always- sending delivery report notifications, even which not checked in the menu settings?
Every message I send, comes back with another notification saying "Delivered"
Annoying, and I can't figure it out.
(Using Darkside Rom)
Are you guys able to use picture messaging on handcent sms? I deleted stock app cuz I never use it and after deleting stock sms app, MMS doesn't work on handcent sms
GoSMS. You can customize it to almost look like the ICS stock sms.

I prefer the cm7 stock with ics theme, its easy to do and it works great with spoofed SMS... why would you spend time customizing when you could just change the theme to look like ics???

hmm there are two delivery report options for stock are both unchecked? try turning it on and off... if not clear cache and data for it? (this doesn't delete your messages from what i remember)

I thought handcent uses their own mms settings... you should check the settings within handcent.
Whatsapp messenger... funny icons/no mms problems/sent via data so good for international/roaming.
Of course, the person your texting has to have it installed too...
i use handcent..fully customized ..different fonts and themes...many options with pop ups...i tried them all i keep going back to it..lol..

I'm using the stock messenger app. My favorite is handcent though. My past phones were all HTC's and a Dell Streak so I found a better one than those stock apps but I don't mind using the stock one. I will probably be looking into changing it though pretty soon.
The stock one is pretty cool.
I use handcent. I love stock ics messaging. I want it!

Looks cool and not bloated.
I have been using Handcent for years now. Simply because the customization of notifications. That way I usually mute the twitter updates that are forwarded to my phone, but when someone else msg me, I can hear the notification sounds.
Hi all,
I have already searched for this answer but have not found an actual solution. When u text someone and I carry over into a 2nd message, my phone says converting to MMS!
Now I've recently moved to 3 was on Orange for years and I'm pretty sure my Note 2 on Orange didn't do it or my S3 I had or even other phones!
Is this a 3 issue or did it already do it on Orange and I didn't notice?
Is there a fix with the stock messaging app? I don't want to switch to go sms or handcet sms.
Cheers

I don't have my gn2 yet, but...
Is stock the standard aosp messaging app or a Samsung app? If its the pure aosp, there is a setting for splitting messages after 160 chars, which is the standard SMS limit. Is there not an option for something similar to split or keep as SMS? Just because some apps allow 160+ as SMS doesn't mean they should.
Carrier and region may have impact on this as well. More information is always helpful.

Thanks for the reply. It's a Samsung app, so there is no option for the above. I can use a 3rd party app to get round it as 3 have said it's a known issue on their network with certain Samsung phones.
I will just have to either send separate texts or get charged!

Note2 very bad in this, I am extremely disappointed with this, I'm using GOSMS until they find a solution, because the solution of S3's not right with the Note2.

Is anyone else annoyed that you can't send a contact from the stock SMS app? I love the standard SMS but yet have to have a third party SMS app installed just for this purpose. From the stock SMS you can attach a few things but not a contact. And even from the phone app you can send but through email...not SMS.
Nothing major...just felt like griping about something I guess.
On a side note android keeps getting better and better. I don't see myself even going back to a non nexus phone!

I totally agree it's silly this is not factory android option. I can tell this is a general complaint and you weren't really looking for an app, but check this out:
share contracts via sms
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=shareContacts.NS.com
it's not really an "app" it just adds the menu option to share contracts thru messaging app. you still use stock messaging. I have used this since froyo days. it's super lightweight, you'll hardly notice it's even there...

Yup, I've been shocked time and time again that it hasn't already been added since I first started using Android with Froyo.
Which is weird if you've been using dumbphones for the last 15 years I think most of them could do this.

thats not what im asking. the message center number for at&t is different for t-mobile so if this is for t-mobile only then it changes the message center number making it impossible to send and recieve texts on my at&t phone with out having to call in and get the right one back. if it keeps my phones sms settings and just pretty much themes it then no worries but if its built to run on t-mobile and has t-mobile defaults then it changes the number and then puts anyone not on that service out by having to re obtain the right number. sorry to get all technical but id much rather remove and install rather than to do both and then call at&t to fix it so i can send messages.
It will work with att perfectly fine. And everything works including MMS. Your needs to be rooted and you need to delete your original messaging system app before you install the new one and another cool thing about this app is that it will change with 90% of themes you put on your phone and most SMS /MMS mods won't I'm sure you will not be disappointed with this app ..

if it wont install just delete the stock app copy this one after you download it and move it to system/app then reboot. i had to but after i removed the stock one i didnt reboot before i tried installing this one. but its as simple as moving it if it wont install. works fine for me and looks really good on this phone.
Does the quick reply still show up with this installed? I love that thing but I like the black window.

+1 on that. i cant send pics or vids either. it either fc's or says it cant send. either one just leave a blank tile and says sending until i delete the whope thread. anyway you can pist the stock app so we can have full functionality back?
Since Sense 6's native messaging app doesn't have a built in popup notification (like CM, Handcent, Textra, ect), I'm looking for an alternative. Any suggestions? Every third party app I've tried is really outdated, and doesn't mark text as read because Kitkat 4.4 only allows the default messaging app to do that.

I used to cry out for people like HTC and Apple to include popup reply windows for SMS a few years back. Don't really care any more, though this might be because I use Whatsapp more than SMS. That includes a popup quick reply windows though and I never use it. The last one I did use was Chomp but that looks a bit dated now too. Suspect that development of SMS apps is slowing for whatever reason.

I did not see you mention GoSMS. Two popup options: the actual popup box, or a contact icon. Once you click-on the icon, the popup box shows up.

Don't have the M8 yet but I currently use 8SMS on my S3 which does the trick, although i am on CM so I am not sure if it will do the same with Sense. I am hoping it will as I want this feature as well.
