This is has probably been asked before, but I had a hard time finding the answer.
Can I root my Epic 4g Touch without wiping data?
The root methods that I have seen require you to flash which in turn requires you to wipe your data/os. So this is why I ask if there is a method to root so that you don't have to wipe anything.
My end goal is to flash StarBurst ROM. But before that I would like to backup settings/data with Titanium Backup ★ root.
Yes, but you have to at least flash clock work recovery mod. Once you flash that you can flash a su.zip to gain root on the stock rom. I wanted to be fully stock so I flashed the cwm, then flashed the su.zip then I flashed the stock kernel again. You won't lose data because with cwm you're flashing a kernel and not system. I went back to stock kernel after rooting because I was getting a lot of los everyday with the cwm kernel installed.

I agree. Stay away from the CWM way of rooting. I got continuous LoS today until my battery died. Not worth it.

i use to have a epic 4g and i could use odin to re flash stock rom and i would root my phone again and i would flash a custom rom of my choice so it would perform better. i wanted to do the same thing with my evo 4g, so i would like to know how can i completely re-flash a stock rom so i can re-install this stupid custom rom that keeps ****ing with my phone...i keep going from rom to rom and wiping everything only works but so much because i would have something from the last rom pop-up (keybord mod or theme or pulldown) things like that...please help
What recovery are you using? And what exactly are you wiping?

Install the most recent Sprint RUU, the root again.
When I install a rom with stock recovery (CM9 alpha 2 for instance), how do I get back the custom recovery in order to update the rom to the next version without having to use Odin to get back to an older rom with a custom recovery and wipe my data, then install the new version of the rom I want. Is there a better way to do this?
Use Auto Root, Mobile Odin, or Odin to install GB-based CWM.

Don't use any of the ics kernels repacked with rogue or cwm unless you hate your phone and need some bricks around the house

Go into download mode and use Odin into EL29 or EL26 you can do it for any ROMs that don't come with cwm recovery
Epic touch phone of xXHELLBoy91Xx
I keep an MD5 of a stock rooted EL29 and gunslinger kernel on my SD card and just use Odin Pro to flash it all at once from my phone. When thats done, just CWM back into recovery and flash whatever new rom you want.
Okay I found this from the blog post:
Stock android recovery is still being used in the ROM. This is for your protection, so you don't brick your phone due to all the people whom have flashed an ICS kernel, bricking when flashing a rom, wiping, etc. If you would like to backup or restore, or do any flashing, please go back to an ELXX gingerbread kernel, and do it from there.

Does this mean I can just flash future upgrades through the stock recovery if I already have alpha 2 installed?
Sorry bit isn't there a video and full write up on the first page on what to do. Just follow OP directions all will be well.

No it means cwm is bricking phones on ics kernels so it will not be included in the ROM until it's fixed ....if you want to do anything flash a GB kernel with cwm el26 ...it won't boot ics so go right into recovery

Want to root wife's epic and keep stock rom & kernel. Is there a way to do this w/o installing cwm? Is it possible to root but be able to do a factory reset and all will go back to unrooted if the phone needs to go back to the store... or would I have to Odin the stock back in (and nothing else).

No it is not. Only a custom kernel will allow you to keep root and CWM. There is a very stock like FC09 ROM that even has instructions on how to get back the Sprint bootanimation. The only thing you would have to remove is Superuser.
Here is the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580931&highlight=fc09+stock+deodexed
Qbking77 even has a video on How to root samsung epic on FC09 on youtube.
Perhaps a little re-wording. I'm okay with custom kernel rooted rom but don't want a custom recovery rom like cwm.. If possible I want to get it rooted button be able to use stock recovery and tell it to do a factory reset and it'll wipe out kernel and rom back to unrooted stock so I don't have to Odin the stock back on if it needs to go in (ie if usb port goes out).
Since its the wife's I wanted to make it easier to go back to stock. For my Evo I've had no personal issues with using custom recovery and full mods/roms) and prefer it.
If I have to go full cwm can you suggest a rom/kernel combo? She's happy with stock look & feel.. Just want to be able to have root and remove bloat.. But keep the sprint app for paying the bill and sprint tv.

Factory reset does not wipe kernel. You will need to Odin no matter what or keep the kernel. Factory reset does not remove root either since su is in the system directory. So what I recommended is the closest with instructions on how to restore stock recovery. You can google How to root the Samsung Epic on EL30 youtube video by qbking77 and you will get root and custom kernel without CWM. But like I said without Odin you will be have that kernel and su. You will be able to delete su with root explorer though.

I may ask earthbound if he will make a one-click root... seeing how all you have to do is make it flash recovery, flash su, remove the recoveryboot.sh (or whatever) and then its done. That way people wont have to use odin that or if i could figure out how to make one that would be cool.

Aghast, not another wife's phone ...
I always chime into situations like this to say- the only wife-friendly phone is a stock phone. (Unless she is actually here herself, rooting her own phone and installing her own ROM or kernel.)

The one click root methods stopped working because the exploit was blocked on GB. He would have to develop a new way to get adb to install all those files in their right places.

If I'm understanding you correctly you want root, stock, no cwm.... well with these new builds of gingerbread it should be possible because of the overwrite script for the recovery... odin in cwm without auto reboot checked... pull battery, boot into cwm immediately, flash the su.zip found on qbking77 how to root and then boot... you "should" have root now, with no custom kernel or rom, and the script should have overwrote cwm, exactly what you wanted...

I don't understand this sentiment. my wife loves CM7 and understands if something don't work she lets me know and I will fix it when I have a chance. It is just like her compute I fix that all the time too.
Just picked up my Galaxy S III a few minutes ago....pretty sweet. I am trying to get the Blazer ROM up and running. A quick question. When I installed ROMS on my EPIC 4g, I simply odin'd Clockwork Mod Recovery (with battery out of phone), but always left auto-reboot unchecked, then unplugged it, and booted into the new clockworkmod recovery, then installed my ROM. kind of a shortcut. Would this method work on this device? Or would I have to do it the long way....root stock build, then install a custom ROM?

So I was able to use Odin to flash over a custom rom and do a rooting method (Probably screwed up somewhere) it installed SuperSU. Super SU stopped working and i updated it and thought nothing of it since I could get to my Recovery. I made a nandroid and formatted system, cache, etc. I tried to flash over Task650's AOKP and the original stock rom. I have 3 different AOKP roms and the stock rom. I have tried to use a different recovery and everytime I do it wont let me flash roms so I'm stuck. It looks like my Recoveries see that there is no root access. how can i fix this?
